Police baton charge civil rights marchers in Derry, 1968

modernhistorian.blogspot.com — Forty years ago today, an event occurred that marked the start of 'the Troubles' in Northern Ireland. When a march banned by the Stormont Government went ahead, the police broke it up with a baton charge, resulting in days of rioting in the city and the radicalisation of many Nationalists.
