- elnerdo, on 10/29/2007, -1/+1The first step to making 'the world' put them into affect[sic] is to put them into affect[sic] yourself.
- 4degrees, on 11/05/2007, -0/+18those plastic shopping bags make a good trash bag for those little bathroom trash cans.
- zachshmack, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1Yeah that's pretty much what I use them for. That and transporting beers when I don't want to take a whole case to a party.
- catalysis, on 10/30/2007, -3/+8You can use plastic shopping bags as a trash bag to throw away other plastic shopping bags.
- nlucasltd, on 10/29/2007, -2/+4Cashiers LOVE IT when I say, "no bag please." They couldnt be happier!! it equals less work for them! I hate plastic bags!
- nobhdy, on 10/29/2007, -5/+3The idea that paper > plastic is false. in reality, plastic takes up less space in a landfill and takes about the same time as paper bags to degrade in a landfill environment. i use plastic all the time because its both more convenient and better for landfills. Though i wont slash down these nifty ideas. good one.
- askjeffro, on 10/30/2007, -1/+3You may be over looking some of the benefits of paper:
1. More items can fit in a paper bag
2. Paper is much more easily recycled across the country. Very often the plastic bags are of a plastic grade that is not recyclable.
3. Paper bags come from a renewable resource.
I honestly don't know what is better for the environment, just putting some thoughts forward. I use reusable bags myself and avoid the debate all together. - theboredom, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2Plastic does not degrade.
No organisms are currently able to digest the stuff. - elnerdo, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2Just to provide a simpler argument: You don't put paper bags in landfills. You recycle them.
- lifelessplastic, on 01/04/2008, -0/+0Or you compost them, which is an even better option in my opinion.
- mustang460, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2no, plastic bags found in grocery stores are made of polyethylene, this is a man made polymer, bacteria dont recognize it as food. the only way they degrade is from UV rays, which will break it down into a fine dust after a debatable 500-1000 years
- carpespasm, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2i agree, in a landfill stuff takes a very long time to degrade. I've read articles about how some people have dug down and found 50 year old news papers that are are readable as the day they went in the landfill. the plastic probably takes longer and would definitly make a worse byproduct once it did degrade though. so the thing is to use less of either of them.
- lifelessplastic, on 01/04/2008, -0/+0Don't forget that you can also compost paper bags and turn them into amazingly rich soil for your garden in just a few months.

- sockpuppets, on 11/05/2007, -0/+14I switched from paper to plastic a few months ago but one of my dates suffocated so I had to switch back.
- VanillaStarfish, on 10/30/2007, -4/+0What grocery store do you go to that still has paper bags? I've only been offered plastic for the last 5 or 6 years.
- inspecality, on 10/30/2007, -0/+7wtf

- darkciti2, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1I just ask for paper bags. I hate it when I put my groceries on the counter and everything falls over (stacked cans, etc).
Paper, FTW ! - Jennica, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2I am obsessed with recycling. the only downside is that I have to take it to a place myself, and I keep it in my car until I get over there. It makes me happy to recycle though, and when people don't it makes me mad.
- expatcatalyst, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1I know I must have missed something along the way, but how is placing more things in a landfill that will not go away for eons any better than killing more trees. Then as darkciti2 said above, everything falls over when you place a plastic bag on the counter anyway?
- endora123, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1I used to really get ramped up about the whole plastic bag recycling thing. Put some serious effort into it. And then one day I had to take a load of stuff to the dump, and as I unloaded my truck a massive compactor/hauler backed in across from me and dumped about 50 million plastic bags right into the general garbage area. I asked about it as I paid on the way out. "Yeah. There's not very much money in recycling those bags so they go to the landfill."
