Air powered cars?! Hype or happening?
greenhome.huddler.com — Sure, a car that runs on air sounds great. But how do they work? Or perhaps a better question...will they work at all? How green are they? And is it worth it?

- dana19812, on 07/17/2008, -0/+10That was a damn good and informative entry on air powered cars. Nicely done!
- maria728, on 07/17/2008, -7/+0World's cleanest car, my...foot. The world's cleanest car is no car at all.
- heebeejeebee3, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6Kind of amazing they think the ZPM air car will only cost $17,800. For such a new tech, seems cheap.
- mobiledigg, on 07/17/2008, -0/+12Nice to see some actual details on how these things work rather than just saying, "it's a car powered on air"
Dugg for actual analysis of the numbers involved with compressing the air and comparison to other options. cool. - thepromise, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6Why don't companies like GM take notice with this kind of stuff? No, forget it, consumers are more interested in ultra energy efficient 30 mpg vehicles with iPod compatibility and built-in On-Star. But a car that actually gets us from point A to point B more efficiently? F that! We need Voice-Activated MP3 PLAYERS!!!
/exhale - insanecee, on 07/17/2008, -2/+3hey snowhite great article, you should send me shouts when you submit seeing as you have dugg everything i have submitted.....
i do have one question..... what about airbags? lol - thegools, on 07/17/2008, -0/+9"will have trouble passing US crash and safety tests"
This brings up and interesting point. Do motorcycles have to pass safety tests to be sold in the US market? I'm thinking motorcycles always fail that crash test you see in car commercials where the car hits the wall dummy hits the steering wheel. If that's the case then after your car design fails the safety test couldn't you exclaim (in a German accent) "No is car, is motorcycle"? - mearom, on 07/17/2008, -0/+8Yes, also, why do solar power plants apparently need batteries? Why not compressed air for them too?
- snowhite7185, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6It's kind of crazy the ZPM air car will have 6 seats...in pictures it looks pretty small.
- dana19812, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah it sure looks like a 4 seater, but ZDM says it will seat six. I guess we'll have to wait and see!
- mikethejohnson, on 07/17/2008, -4/+2Prius the greenest car on the road? Not at all. If this air-car works it's got no competition for "greenest on the road"... You need to look at the polution on the back end production of the car. What kind of pollution will the factories that make the cars give off? What are the environmental effects....no one seems to notice what the Prius is doing. So the next time that Prius owner flips you off for driving a normal car, run him off the road and slash his tires for killing your beloved planet. Who knew Hummer owners cared so much that they sacrificed gas milage to save the environment?

- dana19812, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1And you're citing a debunked study at that.

- dana19812, on 07/17/2008, -0/+9thegools - motorcycles are exempt from crash tests. So are 3-wheeled vehicles like the ZAP Xebra.
It's sort of a situation where the driver/rider acknowledges that the vehicle is inherently less safe than a standard car. The Air Car will have to pass the safety and crash tests though, as a standard 4-wheel car.
mikethejohnson - the Dust to Dust study has been thorougly debunked. The Prius is indeed the greenest mass produced car on the planet.
http://www.pacinst.org/topics/integrity_of_science ... - liuite, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5I've emailed Mr DiPetrio suggesting to him that his air motor would be awesome for building a dive propulsion vehicle. Imagine a motor that can pull you through the water and still being able to breathe the exhaust air. pair that up with a PM motor and you can generate electricity with every breathe you take.
- borez, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7At 1874 lbs it's slightly heavier than a Smart Car (1609 lbs ) , so it should be able to get through safety tests.
- Loky, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5Some "crazy" solution is needed in the close future...
- mobiledigg, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5This story got buried out of nowhere...so weird.
- dana19812, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2That was my reaction too. What the hell?
- CatherineSouth, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0Probably the "?!" in the title. I get the red rage when Britney Spears starts writing headings.
I mean, WTF?!?! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- CatherineSouth, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0Wonder if they'll ever get the air car to work on Ass Gas. Moo...
- jkr801, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1now we are going to have to have bottled air like spaceballs because the cars will be taking it all!
