Samsung to Invest $1.63 Billion in Indonesian Biodiesel Proj
gas2.org — According to an article in the Jakarta Post, an official from the Indonesian government has spilled the beans on Samsung ’s plans to invest up to $1.63 billion dollars in what’s sure to be a controversial acquisition of land for growing oil palms and construction of a biodiesel plant in Indonesia.

- dougvfr750, on 07/24/2008, -0/+14Can you say deforestation...
- mentol, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5I'm sure Samsung can
- chemrat, on 07/24/2008, -0/+12No, definitely a bad idea. See this somewhat related story:

- phreak79, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8Great. So cutting down the Amazon is politically bad they turn instead to the next biggest rainforest on the planet. Shame on you Samsung.
- claybodie, on 07/24/2008, -0/+7This is unbelievable. Indonesia's deforestation rate is already about 380 US football fields per hour - they don't need any help cutting it down faster!
- tbhurst, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8Indonesia has some of the most ecologically important forests on the planet in terms of carbon sinks. It would be a shame if this plan went through.
- sustainablogger, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Right... I'm guessing the trade-off in terms of carbon emissions simply doesn't work here... maintaining forests is one of the easiest ways to keep emissions under control.
- davidryal, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5If Sammy's putting that much money into it, they must have done some homework...
- claybodie, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Homework meaning ROI ($$$), not an environmental impact assessment...
- andruslinda, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5All big people seem to do is ruin the earth, cut down the rain forests and ruin important plants and kill the enviroment wherever they want to.Some wild life is put to an end and die off right away. It time to consider wild life an important part of life now and forever!
- shearyadi, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5This is really crazy plan, this news is another bad news after what the Greenpeace have been doing to stop Unilever from spreading their palm oil plantantion. Another fight is about to begin...shortly!
- ecochildsplay, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4We have to find real solutions to the oil problem that don't do more environmental harm than good.
