Will Going Green Save The US Economy?
greenopolis.com — The US and world economy has been at the forefront of everyone's thoughts these days with the catastrophic Wall Street crash, foreclosures, and the recent government bailouts of financial giants. One thing that many are not thinking about when looking at the US economy is how by investing in clean energy technologies today we will produce jobs...

- iamabootdisk, on 09/22/2008, -0/+9great article! this wont only create thousands of jobs, but brand new jobfields!
- Nathrat, on 09/22/2008, -0/+6it's exciting to see a shift happening, and people becoming more aware and actually starting to care.
- hlund05, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2Exciting stuff indeed! It seems like everyday more and more people seem to wake up to this.
- neognostic, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2We just need to stop giving Big Oil government handouts.
- elephantwaylon, on 09/22/2008, -1/+6The current NYer talks about the money needed to create a partially wind-powered economy—something like $40 billion (Bush is requesting 1.4 Trillion for recent bailouts). And revving up for war saved the US economy in WWII—there's no question that going green would create millions of jobs. The only question is will we have the political will to do so before eco-calamity strikes.
- nandemoari, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3Thank you, this is great article.
- plaguepony, on 09/22/2008, -3/+1The economy is benefited by either providing a new service, like the internet did, or providing a stock good, like food for cheaper. The "green" technologies do neither. While they may benefit the environment, they are not a net benefit unless we see them as a luxury good, that people are willing to pay a premium for.
- CommonDavid, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2The article is about Green Energy.
- EcoLogic, on 09/22/2008, -1/+2Cool story. I must say, when the Democratic candidates started latching onto the "green collar jobs" meme back in the primaries, it was one of the most exciting political developments I've ever experienced. I believe Al Gore started using the term around the time of Inconvenient Truth, but I assumed it was an idea that was just too good to ever be implemented. Hopefully I was wrong.
- TheMachine1, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Its not green but CNG for transportation could be a big stimulus to the US economy.
- rudeboyskunk, on 09/23/2008, -1/+1But...but...what about all those poor billionaires in the oil business? If we do this, how will they get their new private plane?
- jonolan, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2It won't create new jobs, it'll just force existing workers to retrain into new fields. The probably net result is the loss of a lot of middle and lower income jobs.
- CommonDavid, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1It will absolutely create new jobs, it's a new industry. The oil, refining and electric companies are not going to go out of business because alternative energy is being used.
- inboxnews, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2You just made jonolan's point.
