World's Oceans: Is it too late to save our precious resource
dailygalaxy.com — (Here's the story with a link that works.) When you tally up all the environmental damage from a variety of causes, it ’s not hard to conclude that by the end of this century the ocean will be unable to support the vast diversity of life we have come to associate with it.

- EdmontonEh, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6I am just waiting for the Digg users to come in and start telling us that the issue is overblown, and that it is not much of a problem... any bets how long in takes?...
- tkstock, on 08/20/2008, -2/+3Sorry it took me so long.
This is overblown and not much of a problem.
In reality, human pollution needs to be curbed, and it needs to start with YOU (and me). I've seen twice in the past year when I'm following a vehicle someone blatantly throws out their bag from McDonalds.
Everyone needs to do their part, and that includes the corporations who purposefully break the law.
- scotq, on 08/20/2008, -0/+13Why????????????????? We are such idiots!
- stonewall123, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10Sad thing is it wouldn't be terribly difficult to fix this. Planting trees and sea grasses along waters ways to reduce the evergrowing deadzone, less use of fertilzers in areas that don't need it to address the same issue and most importantly creating marine sanctuaries that are off limits to fishing. In the few areas where such marine sanctuaries were created the fisherman were initially upset that restrictions were placed on where they could fish. However, it didn't take them very long to realize that their catch yields had gone way up in areas adjacent to those protected areas. Its very important to have those areas where fish can breed and the young can mature and these natural reserve areas would be highly beneficial for the ecological and commercial interests. Win-win.
You can read here for more information on marine reserves.

- manzplan, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8The oceans are already dying, there are many places where the reefs are dead. All the life they support is dying.. and all the life that is supported by that life.. will soon die...
- Orion1004, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8Saving the oceans should be a #1 priority of the world's nations. What could be more important to Earth, the
"water planet." - ks136, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6Just watched a PBS show about this very thing last night. The fertilizer issue was something I was not aware of.
- MarkusX, on 08/21/2008, -1/+3It's never toooooo late. Start now!
No matter what articles you read or documentaries you watch, if you think that it's too late to save the environment, then you can go right ahead and start live life to the fullest, don't make any children anymore and buy a Hummer.
