world's most famous landmarks replaced by cheap souvenirs
dailymail.co.uk — At a moment's glance this picture could be the real Big Ben. But then you notice the hand below and the incredible optical illusion is revealed. Tourist Michael Hughes today unveiled his extraordinary holiday snaps of the world's famous landmarks - perfectly blended with cheap souvenirs. Michael, 56, stumbled across his unusual technique in 1998

- londonflare, on 10/06/2008, -1/+23as someone who used to get the bus past the Zebra crossing on Abbey Road at least twice a day I can assure you it is not unique.
- pfhayter, on 10/06/2008, -1/+13I thought there was a degree of sarcasm in the original comment.
- GawtMilk, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1Why is the Statue of Liberty "infamous"?
- capnawesome, on 10/06/2008, -0/+19would have been cooler if he'd used the vinyl ..the plastic case looks kind of bad.
- mouthymadness, on 10/06/2008, -6/+1But it's also an older case. Thus it makes it cool.
- Mononuclear, on 10/06/2008, -0/+7the whole point was using cheap souvenirs in the photos of landmarks...
- uggidi, on 10/06/2008, -1/+3very creative

are greater than most people think.
One night in a siezure of passion,
one tried to make love to the Sphinx.
Now the Sphinx is made out of sandstone,
and its rear has been plugged by the Nile,
which accounts for the hump of the camel
and the Sphinx's inscrutable smile.

- cheeseplease, on 10/06/2008, -0/+7I got kind of sad when I saw the Abbey Road one. It's close to half a century ago that the Beatles walked there, the photo on the road to me is symbolic for the feeling of an entire generation, and now it's just a road with some long gone memories, given the illusion of life for a second by holding the CD case at the exact right spot.
Yeah, I'm probably going too deep into this.- RandomLife, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1No, I'm with you there. It caught me the same way.

- TVarmy, on 10/06/2008, -7/+3How else are we to pay for the bailouts? We have to sell what we have and replace it with cheap stuff. I'm pretty sure we could sell the Chrysler Building for a couple billion and just prop up a keychain.
- desertDenizen, on 10/06/2008, -2/+4The photographer says nobody will copy him because it's hard.
Um, no.- d4ftpunk, on 10/06/2008, -1/+0Not as hard as the pyramid-boner....

- kellybp1, on 10/06/2008, -8/+13What exactly is infamous about the statue of liberty?
- btschul, on 10/06/2008, -6/+18There is a huge beating heart in the center.
- shipwreck58, on 10/06/2008, -2/+18It's where Guilianni hid all of the dead Hobos when he had 42nd street cleaned up.
- mouthymadness, on 10/06/2008, -9/+2It's infamous now because Chuck Norris round housed it. Thats why its now holding his words on encouragement.
- Qumahlin, on 10/06/2008, -1/+4because having a symbol of liberty as the greeting to our country at a time like this is laughable.
Then read the statue's creedo and then read the current immigration laws and backlog and wonder to yourself why we haven't taken the damn thing down.

And when was the riverbank of Helsinki, Finland deemed "one of the most famous landmarks in the world"? I must have missed that one. - IphtashuFitz, on 10/06/2008, -1/+22That guy must have two incredibly steady hands.
- calenerd, on 10/06/2008, -3/+4a tripod my friend, a tripod.
- IphtashuFitz, on 10/06/2008, -1/+3That's not a tripod holding up the souvenirs.
- BossKey, on 10/06/2008, -1/+5Photographically speaking, just about all the shots were taken in bright daylight. This makes a fast, motion-freezing shutter speed possible, which in turn makes it practical to completely hand-hold these shots. No tripod needed.
- IphtashuFitz, on 10/06/2008, -1/+2True, BossKey, but still being able to hold the souvenir in precisely the right spot while snapping he photo takes two incredibly steady hands, whether using a tripod or not. Any trembling in either hand can move the souvenir out of position or bump a tripod mounted camera enough to create the same problem.
- BossKey, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3@IphtashuFitz - ah, what you are saying about the positioning precision is true, I agree there.
- penguinofhonor, on 10/07/2008, -0/+3Well, IphtashuFitz, he probably messed up on a few photos. Nobody said that he only had one shot.
- calenerd, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1I meant he could fix a tripod to his camera, and hold up the souvenirs.
- mouthymadness, on 10/06/2008, -1/+18You mean he puts his hand on a tripod?
- bitweever, on 10/06/2008, -1/+13Maybe he has a tripod with a disembodied hand on it.
- betheturtle, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1Yeah, more portable that way.
- trademarkhero, on 10/06/2008, -4/+1Or a tripod.

- protodon, on 10/06/2008, -0/+72I've never been to a place where souvenirs were cheap!
- Mononuclear, on 10/06/2008, -1/+2depends on where you buy them. If you get them in gift shops at tourist traps then they aren't cheap.
- chiefbandit2200, on 10/06/2008, -1/+4Where else do you buy souvenirs?
- cheeseplease, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2True. Here in Amsterdam for example, souvenir prices drop by half as soon as you take one step out of the city center.
- Mononuclear, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1You get them from a gift shop or even a normal store off the beaten path. For example instead of buying a statue of liberty souvenir on Ellis Island you instead buy it from a wallmart in New York etc. You can usually get the same exact thing for much cheaper.
- volacide, on 10/07/2008, -0/+2Almost all souvenirs are cheap but they're rarely ever cheap.
- Mononuclear, on 10/06/2008, -1/+2depends on where you buy them. If you get them in gift shops at tourist traps then they aren't cheap.
