- rileyhallwood, on 07/06/2008, -2/+18guy's a legend, one of the true pioneers of skating. his boards are still produced and sold in lots of shops, including his old school wide tails. great guy.
- green1152, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3Don't forget his shoes. They're still mighty popular.
- soulflow, on 07/06/2008, -5/+14I can do that.
- KMartSheriff, on 07/06/2008, -1/+43Tony Hawk Pro Skater has ruined me. I know that guy is probably amazing, but I just kept waiting for him to grind off random ***** and get 50 ft in the air while doing stupid amounts of spins/grabs/tricks.
- DemDude, on 07/06/2008, -1/+2I know, that's absolutely the same with me!
But now that I'm playing skate. more often, it does get better. Here's hoping I'm going back to normal ;-)

Submit that *****. I would but I'm not cool enough for the front page :(- kitaljevich, on 07/06/2008, -0/+14Damn, your last sentence there pretty much summed up exactly what is wrong with Digg.
Shame this is what it's become...- wellyuk, on 07/06/2008, -2/+2Again, digg isn't a competition (that I'm aware of). Does it matter who gets stories to the front page?
- green1152, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3It depends on how many friends you have that will digg it up out of the upcoming stories page.
- kitaljevich, on 07/06/2008, -0/+5Does it matter who gets stories to the front page?
No, frankly it doesn't. But say I found something really neat (that nobody else submitted) and wanted to share it with the community, and with my 'friends' being reserved for well, actual friends, there is literally no hope it's going to get FP'd.
Ack.
Time for something new... - supermanly, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Instead you'll get someone with friends submitting the same article on a different page actually FPing.

- wastingtape, on 07/06/2008, -1/+4The thing that strikes me about these pro skateboard videos recently on digg is how the skaters appear to effortlessly float through the air. I don't recall gravity being so gentle.
- lindasue, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Trust me, gravity is not gentle. Gravity is a broken foot, a concussion, a busted lip, another broken foot, and variety of cuts and bruises that leave ugly, ugly scars. Gravity is so many trips to the emergency room that the triage nurse recognizes you the instant you walk through the door, and wants to see the video of how you got your injury (because he knows you have video).
Yes, I'm the mom of a skateboarder. :)

- dougbdl, on 07/06/2008, -3/+24I don't want to get all you skateboarders pissed, but I have seen those guys do that a million times.
- bloogey, on 07/06/2008, -1/+13seems like there are alot of skaters on digg
- Nath2k8, on 07/06/2008, -0/+5Or wannabes either way :)
- aydoubleyou, on 07/06/2008, -3/+16Times have changed, skateboarding has gotten a lot crazier.
He's definitely good, but I know amateurs who can do all of that.- louiebaur, on 07/06/2008, -3/+2Really which amateurs can skate a bowl like Cab that are the same age he is?
- aydoubleyou, on 07/06/2008, -0/+9Thats my point, they arent his age. Theyre younger and they can do just as much.
Im just saying that the pace in skating has increased a lot over the past decades. - tas08, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Agreed, but there's a lot to say for being one of the people to bring it here, to invent the stuff that has set this pace. (I'm not saying to disagree w/ that)
- wellyuk, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2He did all that before them. He created a load of tricks. How many tricks and how much influence have your amateurs created? No one is saying old wonky head is better than skaters of today, however he was a pioneer and without his influence, skating would be a different game today.
- aydoubleyou, on 07/06/2008, -0/+9Thats my point, they arent his age. Theyre younger and they can do just as much.
- seantubridy, on 07/06/2008, -0/+9Yeah, but guys like this did it first. That's like saying Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta and Jay Adams suck because they can't do what skaters do today. These guys were the first to walk up to a pool and say "I think I'll try to skate up these vertical walls and defy gravity" when no one ever thought of it or knew if it was even possible.
People who knock this don't understand how progress occurs. You wouldn't see the level of skating you see today without guys like this.- aydoubleyou, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I didn't intend to mean that Cab or any of those skaters suck. They definitely shred. I thought I made that clear.
- kappuru, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I'm not sure they could with that consistency though, not most ams.
Especially not miller flips or mctwists, no one does those anymore.
- louiebaur, on 07/06/2008, -3/+2Really which amateurs can skate a bowl like Cab that are the same age he is?
- Armstrong3, on 07/06/2008, -9/+39boring.
- LincolnA, on 07/06/2008, -8/+3that was the most boring thing I've ever seen on digg
- tehxhorace, on 07/06/2008, -8/+3not impressed at all
- beskurrd, on 07/06/2008, -1/+6Not a whole lot of air, but regardless pretty damn good run IMO.
- hotrodZoidberg, on 07/06/2008, -1/+39Thank you, Tony Hawk games, because you have managed to make all real life skateboarding videos look boring.
You mean to tell me that real skateboarders don't do 360 flips to a hardflip, while transitioning into a triple kickflip--all while doing at LEAST a 720--every time?- qster, on 07/06/2008, -1/+3Not far off! :P

- Jade10145, on 07/06/2008, -0/+6Its cool looking at old school skatet boarders and watching them ride, do tricks etc. but I kind of look at it like looking at old action/special effects movies. Ya, they were pretty cool back then, even cutting edge for their time, regardless they did wow you for the time. But now the movies are ridiculous, especially compared to the movies of the past. What you have to remember is that those old action movies gave birth to the new genere of action movies. Sort of like the orginators of skate boarding gave something for the newer riders to build on. I respect Cabellero for being at the birth of skate boarding and inovating. Even though the tricks don't have as much dazzle as todays tricks, you have to put it into prespective.
- rileyhallwood, on 07/06/2008, -0/+4i think people are missing the point here, he was one of the first guys to do this stuff, of course its not that hard now but youve got to remember he invented about 1/4 of the tricks people do in bowls today. once you learn to ride these ramps like Cab started, you really appreciate it. example: last night.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rileyhallwood/2641561 ...- louiebaur, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Yea I don't think they get it Cab is a legend and invented many of the tricks that people do today. Half Cabs are a staple trick for sure!
- BobTheTaco, on 07/06/2008, -1/+14Talk about anticlimactic....
- l800LEMMINGS, on 07/06/2008, -1/+3punkorama 2 is playing in the background
- tas08, on 07/06/2008, -1/+2So much skateboarding on digg recently, what is this, the turn of the century all over again?
:) - Bersy, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2***** man the guy is 44.. is that a recent video?
- stinger666, on 07/06/2008, -3/+4lame
- trodemaster, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Much love for Cab!! Still ripping to this day. Tony Hawk was just a 12 year old ankle biter following Cab N crew around for years. If you look closely you can tell he was having fun. While a lot of clowns are driving cars to work I'm still skating cause it's fun!
- sunnydayz, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2It is called progression, With out these guys no one would be doing the things they are now. It is the same for every sport.
- bonlebon, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3Keep these skateboard geezers videos coming :D
- p014k, on 07/06/2008, -7/+4This guy is not a legend. Rodney Mullen is a Legend.
- windycityhxc, on 07/06/2008, -0/+4Idiot.
- louiebaur, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Funny Rodney is a great second generation skater but he is not old enough to be a legend yet. I think he would probably pop you if you compared his status to that of Cab's. Both great skaters just different generations. Perhaps you should brush up on your skateboarding history
- Nappuccino, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2I don't quite agree... but I'd say that Mullen's videos are much more impressive than this one.
- louiebaur, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1For sure those are professional videos and Rodney is an amazing street skater. This was shot on the deck at a contest with no lighting or anything just raw uncut footage so you are right not quite as impressive.
- Nappuccino, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2That is a good point... are there any Mullen competition videos floating around?
- TheLastEskimo, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2How can you say Cab is not a legend? Were you even alive back then? If so, you must have just come out of your coma.
What a dick!
- windycityhxc, on 07/06/2008, -0/+4Idiot.
- sb24, on 07/06/2008, -3/+2This is cool and all, but front page......really?
- wellyuk, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Digg didn't put the story on the front page. It's users did. It's a democracy. Stop your whinging.
- seantubridy, on 07/06/2008, -0/+5For all of you who say this is boring and don't appreciate what he has done for skating, here is Caballero 21 years ago in his prime - inventing tricks that are a staple of skating today. You'll probably still be bored but at least know what you're talking about.
http://digg.com/extreme_sports/Skateboarding_21_Ye ... - Barackalypse, on 07/06/2008, -1/+2This is boring, especially compared to the Tony Hawk video on the front page.
- XSVPBalla, on 07/06/2008, -1/+1vert is queer....
- foxley, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1FAKE.
- papashawn, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2It's that punk-o-rama CD i got when i bought a pair of Vans in 8th grade.
- everfresh59, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3Mike McGill, Steve Saiz, Natas Kaupas, Ray Barbee, Steve Caballero, Tony Hawk; True pioneers of skateboarding. From Street to Vert to anything. And just for the record, Steve is 43 in that video. I'd like to see you ***** punks try that.....
- FinalSight, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2No Rodney Mullen though? He pioneered the ollie, kickflips/heelflips, and more. How does he not get a mention in your "true pioneers of skateboarding?"
- radiofreebc, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3When I was a kid, he was one of the first pro skateboarders I ever saw give a live demo. He was in Hawaii shooting "Animal Chen", and I thought that the Bones Brigade was the *****! Years later, I was media at the Slam City Jam in Vancouver, and had the opportunity to interview him for a project I was working on...as well as Tony Hawk, Tommy Guerrero, Willy Santos, Ethan Fowler and others. I found Steve's interview to be the best (by far) and his positive, professional attitude impressed me a great deal. He is a true skateboarding legend, and when people hate on him...they need to understand that he's not in his 20s anymore...he's 43!
I'm sure most of the idiots slamming Steve (and vert) can't even drop in on a vert ramp, much less do frontside invert reverts...so shut up and watch a true skateboarding legend in action.
...and I'm sure if you asked either Rodney Mullen or Tony Hawk about Steve Caballero, they'd have some respect for the guy. He's the person who taught us all how to "draw the perfect line"...so stop hatin' and start skatin'! - dkdigitalfilms, on 07/06/2008, -3/+4Really? This is on digg? I understand the respect of an innovator but there was nothing amazing about that. For something amazing try this just posted today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGQq2m3sYI0- imhalfpirate, on 07/06/2008, -1/+2Wow. Blading? I thought we skateboarders killed your disease of fruitiness.
- louiebaur, on 07/06/2008, -1/+2Are you serious? Fruitbooting is truly amazing alright, amazingly gay!
- tobster85, on 07/06/2008, -1/+3haha fruitboots....
- pooty2, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Whats the worst part about blading?
Telling your parents that you're gay!
- jeddjohnson, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Much respect for this high risk sport.
- sparkmonkeyz, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I have skated with him at the Sunnyvale skatepark. He lives in San Jose, and still is pretty good, but you can definitely tell he's getting older.
- Halsfield, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1im a big fan of cab, but why the heck did you pick this video to showcase him? it really wasnt his best , or even close to his best stuff. That looked like him just fooling around to qualify or something.
- gamben0, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2He doesn't really do anything digg worthy in the vid. Great skater, but this was just an average run.
- somegezzer, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Steve Cab is so knarly/committed that because of an old injury had to have his head fixed in one position. Instead of any normal person giving up skating and having it fixed forward he had it fixed pointing slightly to the right so he could still skate.
How can you call that gay? In fact anybody who calls that gay is a wannabe street skater who has probably only every managed to do ollie standing still in their living room holding onto their sofa.- havefuntimes, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0Actually Steve was born with an illness that left his head crooked. He never had a neck injury.
I think Steve Caballero is one of the most insane skateboarders of all time. Definitely one of the most smooth. Here is a gallery of some smooth and sick tricks that I found.

He's a true legend and is completely RICH because of his "cab" shoe from Vans.

He's a true legend and is completely RICH because of his "cab" shoe from Vans.- justinlynch, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0As a former "VERT" pro I rode with him in the late 80's in 90's. This is like getting to ride beside Lance Armstrong in the tour. He is an Icon and invented style and tricks when he was a boy that had never been possible like Tony Hawk and his peers he is the Babe Ruth of 3 generations of skateboarding and one of the coolest guys ever.
The hard part of understanding skateboarding as a non skater or younger skater is as the sport continues to progress the pioneers seem simple but it is the pioneers that build the block in which the next generation feeds off of. It is not like boxing legends you can't compare it. You have to be young and dumb now and grow to be 30 something and take a look at Shawn white or Bucky, or gliffberg as they will seem simple in 20 years but still loved for the contribution and character.
Style and grace never die. Look at half the pro riders on vert now and see if they have half the style cab or hosoi had in the 80's and 90's. It is just not that important anymore to all but a dozen of the best new guys.
1. It is a bowl and the transitions are tighter like 10ft with a foot and a half of vert maybe less. The only reason the new generation goes this high is the transitions are like 12 ft with 2 to 3 feet of vert. In the day we rode at best 10 foot transitions with no super roll ins to get a head start 7 foot air.
2. Cab had the world record high air in 1887-88 at 11 or 12 feet on a smaller transition. At his prime on new ramps he would be going 10 feet as would at least the top ten of that day.
3. All the tricks learned back then were on harsh concrete or smaller ramps, no Woodward camps or sponge boxes and up to that point in 1982-83 or even earlier cab was doing front side miller flips, units (frontside 540's) all in concrete parks with wimpy little rectors and Vans.
4.The sad part of skating is the history lost generation to generation. If you are 20 years old and younger you would almost think that skating started at the top ten X-games.
5. Good luck watching any AM contest and seeing a killer upside down front side invert or smooth pro style, everyone is all too worried about flipping out.
6. Just for good measure check out Chris Miller, Christian Hosoi, etc. And before you even think of going pro study that style, speed and power, use of tricks. When you can cruise like Rune then learn the tech stuff.
So props to Cab he is 44 and he is loving his life and ripping hard.
I sadly am beat to ***** at 37 and wishing I was just riding smooth busting half those tricks. Go Cab do this until your 70!!!!!
His cab shoe was all I ever rode in. My ankles are now ***** but hey my board stuck to my feet then and airwalks sucked balls in the early 90's sold at k-mart and target with gay vecro. (LOL)
The only thing I would ever take back from then was the gay shorts, rip grip and too many reverts. A totaly different time then and much less stale than it is now. You had to kill to ride a good ramp in that day or build it yourself.
Sincerely your fan,
Justin Lynch
