    • PookaMan, on 07/22/2008, -8/+2should have been top 15 ufc fighters...ufc fighters are class c fighters and any pride fighter would stomp all over anybody on that list...also anyone planning on digging me down look it up instead of fanboying the ufc. pride fights are international and ufc is mostly just the us. not saying the ufc fighters aren't talented (they could kick mine and anyones ass that bothers posting on the internet) but they ARE class c fighters. its a fact.

Second, whilst some ex-PRIDE fighters (Big Nog, Rampage, Silva) have done well, others (Cro Cop, Henderson, Shogun) got spanked into the middle of next week. Third, if UFC is so US-dominated why do only two of the 5 weight classes have a US champion?

        The only fanboying here is on your part. The mystique of PRIDE has gone, deal with it.

George St Pierre was knocked-the-*****-out by Matt Serra. The only fight Fedor has ever lost was due to a cut, that would normally be ruled a no-contest, but it was a tournament, so they had to declare a victor. He beat the current UFC heavyweight champ 2.5 times, and just creamed the former heavyweight Tim Sylvia. Sylvia even thinks that nobody can beat him, and that he's not human. On top of this, Fedor has the best personality of any fighter in the world. He's humble and modest, and very grateful.

      There is also no way you can rank George St Pierre above Spider Silva. NONE. The writer of this article simply knows nothing about MMA.

        Machida can also be argued to not only have never lost a round, but never even put into real danger (a.k.a. Fedor vs. Fujita). But who has Machida fought? Only a handful of good opponents.

        Fedor has had 2 top ranked opponents in the last 3 years. Meanwhile Faber, GSP, Silva, ... have all been pretty busy with top competition.

        Both performance and competition have to be taken into account.

UFC's monopoly status doesn't make it the best. PrideFC was a much better league than the UFC is, and this is shown by how well the Pride fighters did going into UFC despite the crippling rule changes.

      The only reason that Fedor's not in UFC is that Dana is a megalomaniac and wouldn't give Fedor a decent contract. In fact, he doesn't give any of the top fighter decent contracts, which is why they are all trying to leave so that they can make decent money in their short careers.

      Much more importantly, Inside MMA ranked Fedor the best fighter on their top ten list.

      I'll believe he's second when I see someone beat him.

They treat fighters poorly, and lock them into terrible contracts. Luckily, some pretty major investors (Mark Cuban, Don Trump) have started to pay attention to MMA and really pay the fighters well.

        That said, I'm not one of the Kimbo fan-boys. He's fun but he's WAY too green to mention in a discussion of serious competitors.

GSP is huge for a welterweight. He looks like a light heavyweight in the ring. Cutting weight for weigh-ins is the most underrated aspect in the MMA.

You know what, I wouldn't even put GSP in the same list as those 3, they're just waaay too ***** dominant in their respective weight-classes. fuuck, BJ and Silva had to move up in weight-class to get some decent competition. I bet Fedor would too, if he could. lol

BJ takes none, and will fight anyone, and I think he's one of the very best because of that among other things. Hard to compare him to Fedor though. They're too different. I think he could whip faber too. If neither took drugs, he would kill faber.

And while Fedor certainly verified his right to be considered the top after his performance there, he had a significant dearth of any quality opponents for a long time up until then. When you spend your time fighting 1-0 kickboxers, it's hard to impress people.

      I too would put fedor at #1, but GSP is definitely TOP3 right now, absolute top in his weight class and pound-for-pound one of the most impressive fighters in MMA.

Remember that Kimbo had zero ground skills in his backyard brawl days. His last opponent, Thompson, is a more experienced MMA fighter with matches in Pride FC. Kimbo wasn't dominant against Thompson, and we saw him struggle at times. That had a lot to do with a decent game plan by his opponent.

Nick Diaz, Gomi, Tawajiri and Ishida all fight in other organizations. Although Filho is already on the list, the LW division has to be the most stacked division in the world. And pound-for-pound any of those guys can probably make it on that list when fighting at their best.

UFC is one of the safest, most technical sports out there, but like yourself, not many people know exactly what these fighters go through, and how hard they train. Boxing classy? I wouldn't go that far, boxing is a lot more dangerous than MMA, seeing that there is a countdown for the fighter to get back up after being knocked out, that leads to brain damage. The UFC on the other hand are so anal about protecting their fighters, they won't let their fighters keep fighting after getting knocked down. MMA fighters have to train in several different martial arts, and in order to be the best, you have to be an amazing well rounded fighter. Boxing is dead because something BETTER came along. Don't be a hater.

        His RNC on Tim was also not actually a RNC but a windpipe choke with the wrist from Judo/Sambo.

        He just isn't your typical Western boxing/Wrestling/BJJ fighter.

Plus Faber's record is 21-1-0 not 16-1. If this a list made up by fans then they need to pay better attention to what's going on.

I think if he does well for his next few fights, then I'd agree, but as it stands he has yet to successfully defend his title. Silva and Fedor both, in my opinion, have been more impressive fighters. Again, not to discredit GSP, but I think he's still got a few fights to go to reach the status of those two.

In boxing, if there is a knockdown, you stand up and keep getting hit in the head until you are so brain dead you can't move. In MMA, if you get knocked down, the fight is almost always stopped before damage can be done. That's why pro boxers suffer brain damage and die from fights. There has never been a death in MMA. Also, in most cases fights end via a submission hold, where no damage is inflicted.

      MMA includes Olympic athletes, who simultaneously hold blackbelts in several FUNCTIONAL martial arts. Boxing has Mike Tyson, and other thugs.

      "Pure martial arts" is totally ineffective. Watch some Bruce Lee videos, at least that's entertaining, don't waste your time watching some BS martial arts match.

      That's just a few of the reasons that you're hopelessly wrong.

      "Pure bloodlust from fans." A typical comment from someone who doesn't understand to sport. It's very interesting to see the different stylistic matchups. You have Lyoto Machida who's undefeated, but uses Sumo, and Karate! Take a striker and put them agains a Jui-jitsu expert. In boxing you have.... people hitting heads with fits...only. That's bloodlust

      "pure Martial Arts" like Jeet Kun Do, which is the (grand)father of todays MMA. Bruce Lee borrowed from everybody. Hapkido is another for you to Google. Research the history of today's traditional martial arts, you will find nothing pure about them.

      It takes skill to be able to ground and pound effectively, if you do not have a background in wrestling/bjj/judo or any other form of ground fighting then you're going to get punished. Please go watch a Fedor highlight reel.

        for a long time. sure its impressive to see couture come out of retirement in his 40's and beat tim sylvia, and for that i'll give him the #4 spot, but couture hasnt been as dominant as the other 3 in his career. id love to see barnett fight fedor, ive wanted to see that for quite a long time actually, i think he could give fedor some problems maybe, but i also think fedor is too fast for him.

Heck, he even names Antonio Rogerio Nogueira as #11 when his older twin, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is by far the better of the two (and former Pride Heavyweight Champion and current UFC Heavyweight Interim Champ) Heck, the only man to really have Nogueira's number is Fedor and Fedor's only beaten him by decision.

    He's also missing some of the great japanese fighters who haven't transitioned from Pride to UFC. Like Takanori Gomi, Shinya Aoki, and Kid Yamamoto.
