- Fire4Effect, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Theismann is still making the public pay for that injury by delivering horrible football commentary....
- commiecat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Amen. I'm glad he's being replaced by Jaws now - I think Kornheiser & Jaws will make a great MNF team.
That said - his injury was pretty nasty. IMHO, all the broken leg injuries were the most painful to watch (Sid Vicious, Theismann, Prothro). I can deal with cut arteries, baseballs bouncing off a face and torn ligaments. Seeing a foot flopping around independent from the rest of the leg just makes my stomach churn. - Fraize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'll never forget watching that game, and the commentary on the news afterwards. They had an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports injuries on camera. He had a skeletal leg in studio, and held it up on the news desk in approximately the position Joe's leg was in. Then, with no warning, he karate-chopped the leg, snapping it with a loud crack, live on TV. You could hear the anchor-woman mutter, "ohmygod..." in the background. It was great!
- SnuKs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. Jaws on MNF.. that news to me. Actually that's GOOD news to me. He did a great job on the season MNF opener last season.
- dakboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never got to see Theismann's injury live, but saw it the following day on the news/replays.
I can still see it vividly in my mind, and it was over 20 years ago.
- commiecat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Amen. I'm glad he's being replaced by Jaws now - I think Kornheiser & Jaws will make a great MNF team.
- nebben, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Try clicking on the links for the vids, ya dope.
- southwestnut, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1only two words came to mind after watching these,
1) DOH!
2) ouch- southwestnut, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0dugg down for a dry sense of humor amazing. only on digg. Ok bury me on this comment .
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I'm grossed out and I haven't even watched any of the videos.
- redsox32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2how about the paralysis Darrel Stingly suffers from Jack Tatum?
- Wonkanobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This one's great (short and in slow-mo):
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wPIOt3uoRJ8- ngandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, when i saw the title of this, I thought immediately of that vid...nice.
well, not so nice for the guy in the video....
- ngandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, when i saw the title of this, I thought immediately of that vid...nice.
- futureb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there is one i saw on a boxing video where a guy dislocates his own elbow by catching his glove in the rope as he throws a punch...
wish someone could find that. i remember throwing up in my mouth. - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Man, after reading each description I could not bring myself to click on the links. Damn.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Same. I've watched some pretty gruesome stuff before, but I just can't bring myself to watch someones leg get smashed up.
- fatfinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To bad the list doesn't include motorcycle racing. Troy Bayliss lost his little finger over the weekend in a crash.
http://www.crash.net/news_View~cid~5~id~145694.htm
http://www.troybayliss.com/diary.php?DiaryPage=diary022.htm
This is on the light end of the spectrum in motorsports. - gconeen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1jeez, i've dislocated my knee twice and it's scary as crap. can't friggin imagine what it's like to have your leg basically explode from being hit.
- JaqMs, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Makes you question: why bother playing sports when you can do more enjoyable things on the computer (Linux, Perl, etc)? At least in those, you can't injure yourself.
- pirategaspard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8carpal tunnel: it ain't so gruesome, but it can be debilitating
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wrong place, digg me down.
- Moly, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Whatever. I see worse than this at an average MVA (that's Motor Vehicle Accident for you civillians).
Top ten MVA's I've been to in the last year:
10) Motorcycle vs. deer - pt. with multiple open fractures
9) Motorcycle vs. multiple vehicles - DRT (that's Dead Right There for you civillians)
8) Motorcycle x 3 vs cars, houses, telephone poles, trees, and everything else. HEY! MIX IN A HELMET, NUMBNUTS! COULD THE THREE OF YOU MAYBE PITCH IN AND AFFORD JUST ONE?
7) Truck vs gazebo with ejection - "MY DAD'S GONNA KILL ME" - yeah, if you make it to the hospital
6) Car vs. everything, ejection x 3 - DRT x 2
5) Car vs telephone pole - 28 inches intrusion into engine compartment from the pole - 2 class 1's
4) Small pickup vs. asphalt tanker (loaded) - DRT x 1 (they couldn't even scoop enough blood to do a BAC test, 1 class 2, 1 heart attack
3) Small pickup vs...well...nothing - multiple rollover, pt. crashed on the way to the hospital, has since attained the mental capacity of an 8-year-old
2) SUV @ 55 MPH vs pedestrian. You can imagine how that went
1) Semi vs SUV vs pedestrian on the interstate. Yeah. That didn't go too well, either.
So, I'd say these sports injuries are pretty tame. You ought to see a compound fracture up close with deformation. That's nasty.- klaviernista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Having worked as an EMT myself, I think the worst MVA's aren;t the deaths, but the one's where someone's face goes through a windshield. I can deal with dead people. Living people screaming like crazy and bleeding like you wouldn't beleive is another thing.
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Pics or it did not happen.
Really, i want pics. - johnnynapalm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10You, sir, are a DB (doucebag for you civilians).
- andykee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it appears to me that you seem to be part some sort of medical response team, either an emt, fire/rescue, or a cop.
unless the army started responding to traffic accidents, i believe that you are a civilian as well
- klaviernista, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dave Dravecky breaking his arm mid-pitch is the hardest for me to watch, though it is not on this list. I experienced that injury first hand (broke my arm mid pitch in September 2001) and trust me, it sucks. I blacked out, fell over on the arm, and woke up ten seconds later screaming my fool head off.
- eatupmartha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't have the stomach to click the link so sorry if this is covered on the page (assuming it is not since the poster says it is not). Dravecky's is that much more heartbreaking considering he was out of the game to recover from cancer IN HIS PITCHING ARM, lost a chunk of his shoulder because of it, recovered enough to come back and pitch in the majors, throwing something like 7 innings of no/one-hit ball in his first game, just to break his arm the next one.
A great and tragic story.
Oh yeah and Malarchuk better top that list. If someone could post the list here without the gore I know I would appreciate it. - ostermei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@eatupmartha:
There's no gore aside from text descriptions. The YouTube videos are just linked as text (as opposed to embedded).
- eatupmartha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't have the stomach to click the link so sorry if this is covered on the page (assuming it is not since the poster says it is not). - Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Was hoping for something new, but I've seen all of those already.
Heres a good old one that i like. Legs are NOT supposed to bend that way. - http://www.buzzhumor.com/videos/2095/Skater_Leg_Break - drmangrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, watching these you can help but do the "Oh my god" wince.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dunno why i'm commenting, but even reading the synopsis of the videos made me cringe (it's also safe to assume i didn't watch them). i think i scarred my head a little watching some of those ogrish clips years back...well, at least i know ***** like that isn't a turn on for me, so that's good.
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Out of interest, which clips did you watch?
My first guess would be Chechclear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chechclear), or one of the more recent beheadings in iraq....
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Out of interest, which clips did you watch?
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's Livingston, not Livington.
That injury was gross enough... I'm good on watching the other ones. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13The ice hockey one is the worst.
- klaviernista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Malarchuk's injury was gruesome. I can still remember seeing it for the first time n George Michael Sports Machine. It is the reason goalies all wear throat guards today.
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That and 100mph slapshots to the throat.
- vatchea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2a friend of mine showed me that hockey one a few weeks ago, blew my mind! thank god they've got throat guards now.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not sure I'd necessarily call this a 'sporting injury' but I'm sure it hurt, and it's funny too: http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p209/CanucksRealist/hit.gif
- freefm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Animated gifs remind me of 1998... how the internet was different then.
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1like to see peoples reactions more than the horrific accidents..more funny that way. my stomach is just to queasy to watch.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I actually just threw up.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1But not really though.
- thinkindiff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4without a doubt, the worst sports injury clip is napoleon mccallum. his knee bends backwards...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xVchNFaUiVc- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I was surprised that was not on the list (and further surprised that your comment was dugg down). He was on the field for a long time with another played pinned under him because they didn't want to move him right away. It was a very serious injury and did extensive damage to his leg.
- eggloaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Clint Malarchuk is the only goalie who would have his throat slit during a game and be playing again two weeks later.
I say that because Chuck Norris is not a goalie. - murphykp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Here' a different link to the Mary Pierce video. It doesn't seem to be working in the article. http://youtube.com/watch?v=vOUBQ-rn1Sk
Her injury doesn't look as bad as some of the others, but her video is memorable for the scream.- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've dislocated both knees playing sports, and I can tell you I reacted the same way the first time it happened, not because of the pain, but the surprise effect it had. But then again I discovered that my knees are like my elbows, shoulders, wrists, and ankles in the fact that they all can dislocate with little or no pain.
- Lisztman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I hate you guys and what you do. >=(
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Great, we hate you too.
- LACHRYMIST, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk - The notable incident occurred during a game on March 22, 1989 between the visiting St. Louis Blues and Malarchuk's Buffalo Sabres. Steve Tuttle of the Blues and Uwe Krupp of the Sabres collided at the mouth of the goal, and Tuttle's skate caught Malarchuk on the neck, slicing open his external carotid artery. With pools of blood collecting on the ice, Malarchuk somehow left the ice under his own power with the assistance of his team's trainer, Jim Pizzutelli. Many spectators were physically sickened by the sight with seven fainting and two suffering heart attacks while two teammates vomited on the ice.
damn- ilselu1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5To add to that,
"Amazingly, he returned to practice 4 days later. And a week after that, he was back between the pipes against the Quebec Nordiques. "Doctors told me to take the rest of the year off, but there was no way," Malarchuk says. "The longer you wait, the harder it's going to be. I play for keeps"
Malarchuk spent only one night in the hospital, and was back on the ice with his team two weeks later."
- from wikipedia
- ilselu1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5To add to that,
- papavb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3is this list international? there are a lot of horrid soccer injuries too, like this one with djibril cisse http://youtube.com/watch?v=mt92nLpKJNA
- cjbowser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Don Beebe compressing his spinal column is one that's always given me shivers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu0ihzhCkkk
- bigern75, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2wtf. I submitted this exact same article 33 days ago http://digg.com/other_sports/The_all_time_most_gruesome_and_bizarre_sports_injuries
- bkral6, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Stop your whining. If your title was better you might have had a few more diggs.
whaaa whaaaa whaaa
- bkral6, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Stop your whining. If your title was better you might have had a few more diggs.
- Amusing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The one guy that broke his ankle playing Slamball still turns my stomach. I'll include the link to the clip, but this shows it after it happened, but when I saw it I saw it originally I saw the guy go down.
http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2475144 - kyn2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2David Bussts injury against manchester united beats all of them...
http://www.jsasoccer.com/images/DavidBusst.jpg - mrbenns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Football (Soccer) players get injured too :)
David Busst: http://www.jsasoccer.com/images/DavidBusst.jpg (worst I have ever seen)
Djbril Cisse: http://gdesplac.free.fr/images/cisse-fracture-tibia-perone-france-chine.jpg

Terry Butcher: http://www.sportsillustrated.co.za/images/press/press1732.jpg
Henrik Larsson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyL2hhGSsBc (forgive the idiotic Rangers fan who posted the clip) - CarolynMittens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh man. can't someone briefly describe what happens in these links, so that the easily-nauseated will know what you're talking about. i just can't bring myself to watch any of these videos. i saw that one where the kick boxer broke his leg and it flopped around; that was the sickest thing i have ever seen in my life. my stomach is hurting just thinking about it.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Then don't watch any of them. Trust me.
- walfredo26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0don't you mean Bizarro sports injuries??
- spokenrope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You had me at "Gruesome/Bizarre"
- BooChihuahua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought for sure he was going to add Borje Salming, defenseman of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He fell down in front of the net and another player stepped on his face with his skate! He had around 250 stitches down his entire face. You saw his skate step down on his face. Tons of blood and pictures latter on of the stiches on his face.
- ElectricFuneral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i like the commentary on the last clip "That is a serious knee injury..." no *****?
also, i recall a clip from kick boxing match where this dude kicks his opponent in the shin and snaps his own shin in half. that was brutal.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqItNfdC8g4
also the clip of tank abott hitting some dude in the face and breaking his neck. the guy gets hit and then just goes limp and collapses, good clip.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqEDX_jVdcQ- MackenzieArbour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*****, I hope that last guy was okay.
- sysoprock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4What about the weightlifter dude that blew out his ***** when he was trying to lift too much?
I think this injury tops them all.
http://www.snopes.com/photos/risque/prolapse.asp- osfn8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Goatse-esque link alert!
- ManHammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1gruesome yet entertaining - dugg
- garfonzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cannot bring myself to watch any of them :S
- drill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I once twisted my ankle to frig in a rabbit-hole while playing frisbee. It made a noise like tearing a fresh lettuce
*CRRUUNCCHH*
Here's a cringer -
"An 11-year old boy presented to Accident Department with a snooker injury to his scrotum sustained by falling off a high chair onto the cue tip. There was no history of any fight or suspicious intent.
On arrival, he was alert and fully conscious. No other injury was identified. He was haemodynamically stable and was covered for tetanus.
Genital examination revealed a penetrating injury to the left hemi-scrotum through the base with exit point over the supra-pubic region with the snooker cue in situ (Figure I & II). No bleeding from the urethral meatus was identified. Abdominal examination revealed no signs of peritonism. Chest examination was normal. Abdomen and Chest X ray were normal.
Intravenous antibiotics were administered. Every attempt was made to keep the boy calm and the cue immobile.
The patient was taken to theatre and the wound was explored. Cord and testis were intact and no communication with the abdominal cavity was found. The wound was closed over a corrugated drain. Urethral catherization was performed to exclude any injury.
Post-operatvely, intravenous antibiotics were given for 24 hrs and then oral to complete the course. The corrugated drain removed next day.
Further follow- up: No further problems were reported and the wound healed well." - ksmith34746, on 10/12/2007, -1/+01.) Joe Theismann breaks his right shin bone while getting sacked. He lands on the leg and it visibly breaks and bends at an unnatural angle.
2.) Tyrone Prothro breaks his right ankle trying to complete a pass for a touchdown. It kind of flops around a little.
3.) He gets hit in the face. You can't really see much since he puts his glove up and blocks the camera view, but you can hear it. The sound of the ball cracking against his forehead is pretty gross.
4.) Someone pokes Allen Ray's right eye on accident, and you can see the eyeball protruding from his face. It doesn't come all the way out but just hangs there.
5.) Clint Malarchuk get his throat slit by a blade. You can't see the injury but there is lots of blood on the ice.
6.) Two outfielders dive for the same ball and collide. One gets up immediately, the other lies on his back, possibly knocked unconscious.
7.) Tony Allen goes up for a dunk and blows his knee. Doesn't look too bad actually, he can still move his leg, but looks like he's in a lot of pain.
8.) Like the clip says, you can't see much but her screaming is really heart wrenching.
9.) Sid Vicious jumps off the ropes and breaks his shin. Like Tyrone, it's flopping around and looks disgusting, but he hardly flinches!
10.) Willis McGahee gets a helmet to the knee. It bends back like a flamingo's leg. Gross. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This story sucks. The most important part of all of this is the follow-up, and there is none.
- zetamilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These videos made me realize that i can handle seeing blood just fine but not limbs bending where they're not supposed to.
- Vinhdicated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shaun Livingston's knee dislocation should have taken a spot.
http://news.yahoo.com/photo/070309/photos_sp_afp/374c42194af32b1ef895ecda04fa0dcb - gromnie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Junior Seau's broken arm:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vd58vik7POU
Video's not the best (someone pointed a cam at a TV), but you can still see it fairly well because the game's camera guys just stayed on the arm flopping around and didn't cut away. - hankmole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this what modern youth regards as entertainment? I hope so because you're all going to turn into bone snapping crazed zombies, who, if you find a suitably charismatic leader, might group together to form some sort of zombie army. I'll be honest it's not something I condone, but you might be able to do something about our heavily congested roads.
Hank Mole - Cyber Ass
http://cyberassassin.vox.com/ - commpott, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1what about this one - think its missing in that list...my own little injury back in 2002, a wakeboard crash - pretty scary, just check out the pic and tell me water can't hurt...http://flickr.com/photos/commpott/304512465/
- nutzngum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not going to watch these - the descriptions are enough for me.
I accidently saw two sports injuries (as in I was told to watch this cool clip, but not told what it was about) - a kick boxer kicks his opponent's lower leg, which then snaps and wobbles like a saw blade, the other was a tennis player going for a wide return, rolls on his ankle and snaps it clean so it's hanging like a piece of meat on a thread.
bleh. - Slash23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Theisman's, in case the site is down, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i_bJv_0z-k) is definately one of the most severe hits ever. LT is my favorite player and I grew up watching him and when he talks about it he just mentions the sound as the most horrifying thing. The crunch of the leg being pulvarized must have been nasty. LT knew right away because of that sound how bad the injury was; he was calling for help before anybody else.
