12 SuperFoods You Need To Be Eating
startcooking.com — We all know eating healthy is a good thing to do. But did you know that peanut butter, cacao and cinnamon are considered SuperFoods? Here's a list of 12 SuperFoods to stay healthy. Some may surprise you.

- digg it
- blackdrivel, on 02/26/2008, -4/+14I've always had a suspicion that "healthy" didn't have to mean "empty" - and it's good to see that there are some hearty super foods on the list.
- jmeeter, on 02/26/2008, -3/+2http://duggmirror.com/
- jmeeter, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Why the hell are people digging me down?
- Tweekster, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1I get so tired of the myth that calories are bad
- jemka, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2What myth? If you consume more calories than you burn, you get fatter. Plain and simple. No myth.
- jmeeter, on 02/26/2008, -3/+2http://duggmirror.com/
- bhartzer, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6I've been trying to lose a few pounds and go healthy, so this is helpful. I love peanut butter.
- KraftDinner101, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6Be sure to get "Natural/Organic/Non-hydrogenated peanut butter" according to one commenter.
- C0MF0RTABLYnumb, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Exactly, because hydrogenated peanut butter defeats the purpose.
- yabos, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6It doesn't mean you can eat half a tub of peanut butter. Get the 100% all peanuts kind too. Peanut butter is 100 calories per TBSP so don't eat a lot of it. I eat 2 TBSP per day.
- AdonalFoyle, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4Just because it's good for you doesn't mean that it won't save you from being fat. You have to keep it in moderation just like any other food. Peanut butter is extremely calorie dense. Obviously if you have a sedentary lifestyle and not burning those calories, then you are going to be fat.
- eH9116, on 02/26/2008, -2/+4Ditto, I actually run a Peanut Butter Recipe blog devoted to the brown stuff: http://peanutbutterboy.blogspot.com
- dinostabOMG, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Normally I would bury blogspam, but I clicked it, half expecting to get rick roll'd. Em... I guess this is the most appropriate moment for a link to a peanut butter recipe blog I can think of, and cheers for keeping up a blog on such a specific topic.
- richbleak, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Thank you for spamming your blog. I like what I'm seeing so far. I've been making the peanut butter hotdog since I was a kid; made me laugh when I saw it on there. Good stuff, I'll be back.
- sobebelushi, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1 i would agree with dinostab on this, and then i clicked it too and the first thing there was PEANUT BUTTER SUSHI
this is a gem - eH9116, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I know I felt bad "blog spamming" but it honestly was revelant. I only did it because so many people here posted their excitement for peanut butter and honestly, I'm obsessed with the stuff!
- customer, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Get almond butter, it's way better for you, although it is more expensive.
- KraftDinner101, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6Be sure to get "Natural/Organic/Non-hydrogenated peanut butter" according to one commenter.
- mrection, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4Handy list. I'm not a health nut by any stretch, but it's great to have a simple guide to a few foods to eat to have a generally healthier life... good post :)
- Laurent, on 02/26/2008, -4/+12There's peanut butter and there's organic peanut butter. You really should try the real thing, much less sugar and salt...
- katrayun, on 02/26/2008, -1/+11You don't even need to buy organic peanut butter, just look for one without added sugar or salt (or low quantities.)
My favorite is fresh peanut butter ground right in the store - nothing but organic peanuts. The peanuts themselves provide all the oil you need to spread, and then I can control the amount of sugar/salt it contains. Most natural food stores/co-ops offer this. - Arcesius, on 02/26/2008, -2/+4Organic just tastes better, anywho.
- yabos, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6It doesn't have to be organic to not have all the other crap in it. Just look for the 100% peanuts one that you have to mix the peanut oil back in if it's not quite fresh.
- winmywii, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3You can find it natural with no salt. The only ingredient is peanuts. It doesn't taste too bad, but there is a lot of oil separation that gets messy. They definitely don't mean to eat a jar a jiff. When I try to gain weight in the winter, I am all over the natty peanut butter.
Also some brands say they are "natural" but if you look at the ingrediant list they have all kinds of ***** I can't spell in it. - Typhoon2009, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1The ingredients list should be minimal. There's one brand I have, can't remember the exact name but it promotes itself for having lots of Omega-3. There's also "Peanut Butter & Co."... get the regular type, that's natural as well.
- katrayun, on 02/26/2008, -1/+11You don't even need to buy organic peanut butter, just look for one without added sugar or salt (or low quantities.)
- yndy, on 02/26/2008, -12/+3Surprised to see Peanut Butter on there - given how common the peanut allergy is these days.
- SuperWinner, on 02/26/2008, -1/+71 in a million allergies do not make something generally unhealthy... soy has a similar situation.
- InspectorGadget, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5Soy protein isolate, the most commonly ingested form of soy, IS unhealthy, not because of allergies but because it has unsafe levels of phytoestrogens. Remember how a few years ago menopausal women were told to eat soy, and now that recommendation has been rescinded? Eating a lot of estrogen anologs isn't good for anyone.
- Gunite, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1Peanut butter should not be classified as a super food as peanuts are highly susceptible to mold growth. Roasting does not kill all the mold. Organic vs non-organic makes no difference (some say organic have higher concentrations of mold). All peanuts have some amount of toxin (aflatoxin, a carcinogen) produced by the mold. It's impossible to know what concentration of toxins are present in any batch of peanut butter.
- InspectorGadget, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2I've never once gotten sick from peanut butter mold. If anyone on Digg has, post here. I expect deafening silence.
- Gunite, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1sigh. What is your definition of sick? The original message pointed out how common peanut butter allergies are. Yes mold/fungus can cause allergic reactions. As I said, Aflatoxin causes cancer. Are you going to feed your 'super food' to someone who is ill? How about someone with liver cancer? I hope not.
- JaredXM, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4Well it's obviously not healthy to you if you're allergic to it.
- SuperWinner, on 02/26/2008, -1/+71 in a million allergies do not make something generally unhealthy... soy has a similar situation.
- sofaKing812, on 02/26/2008, -12/+6I can get a double cheeseburger for a dollar.
- variable, on 02/26/2008, -1/+7What's your point?
- haterrade, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6and you can get that angioplasty for a relatively cheap $10,000, maybe buy one and get the bypass surgery for free! what a value deal!
you'll pay for it in the long run
- degron, on 02/26/2008, -8/+21Buried for not having bacon on the list.
- Opheliac9, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Yum, I can go for these. Oddly enough, I actually have most of these now, so *hooray!* (Missing the pomegranate juice, turkey, avocado.)
- stutimandal, on 02/26/2008, -0/+10For those who eat fish:
13) Fishes have phosphorus, calcium, and vitamin oil which sharpens memory and makes bones/joints stronger. - Jaliyl, on 02/26/2008, -9/+4Wow, turkey?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0- hamdogger, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4i know this is getting way out of hand, but i still think it's hilarious when i click on an inconspicuous link and hear that roland electronic drum intro. i just have to laugh.
good one, you got me.
- hamdogger, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4i know this is getting way out of hand, but i still think it's hilarious when i click on an inconspicuous link and hear that roland electronic drum intro. i just have to laugh.
- renagadex2, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2whats that gross tasting green liquid crap that everyone was going crazy for? some sort of grass?
- groundctrl, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2spirulina you mean? wheatgrass?
- Sp0rAdiC, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Liquid chlorophyll I think, http://www.theherbsplace.com/Chlorophyll_Liquid_16 ...
- Hobofuzz, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Soylent Green?
- dvdchris, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I hear it's people.
- DeathJux, on 02/26/2008, -2/+41Here's the list:
avocado
oats
yogurt
pomegranate juice
cinnamon
turkey
peanut butter
cacao
broccoli
blueberries
apricots
beans- jdh24, on 02/26/2008, -0/+11site down. thanks!
- quakerorts, on 02/26/2008, -2/+9Finally, a list I agree with 100%. But note that your peanut butter should have two ingredients, peanuts and sea salt. I take a 2oz shot of pomegranate juice every morning. I treat it like another supplement. Did you know that Afghanistan could be the pomegranate capital of the world if they weren't growing so many poppies?
- rlh1, on 02/26/2008, -0/+9Profit margin on poppies is higher.
- yabos, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Well you don't even need any salt at all IMO. You can get just 100% peanuts.
- jerryterhorst, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1no i did not know that. thank you.
- metric7, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1Poppies are easier to grow, plus the govt. needs easy access to them.
- Shiftgood, on 02/26/2008, -2/+4POM wonderful is the best. I get all emotional just talking about it. Check it out next time you're at safeway.. or eagle if on the east coast.
- joel8x, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Or Piggly Wiggly, or BiLo ,or Waldbaums, or Food Lion, or Publix... Seriously, the ***** isn't exactly hard to find.
- antich, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Where, where, where, where, and where?
- haterrade, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6its pretty ridiculously expensive though
- dvdchris, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Or Wal-Mart.
- joel8x, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Or Piggly Wiggly, or BiLo ,or Waldbaums, or Food Lion, or Publix... Seriously, the ***** isn't exactly hard to find.
- Newportbeachguy, on 02/26/2008, -7/+3Only people from SoCal will get this: The Flame Broiler is the the best! Great Healthy food.
- Shiftyeyedgoat, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6I'm from LA, and I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
- Andrewbot, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1We have some here in Orange, it actually is pretty good.
- GrumpyTroll, on 02/26/2008, -6/+3Well OBVIOUSLY cocaine is a superfood.
- Qtip42, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Well the way they talk about each food on here, you could easily make the same argument for cocaine. This list sucks.
- AgentofId, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Qtip42, I think he was trying to make a joke... it's a common misconception that Coco and Cocaine come from the same plant, though in reality the two plants they come from aren't even of the same species...
Chocolate comes from the Theobroma cacoa plant, from the Sterculiaceae plant family.
Cocaine comes from the Erythroxylon coca plant in the Erythroxylaceae plant family.
Just so we're all on the same page ;)
- chieffan, on 02/26/2008, -3/+5My kid loved peanut butter and would have it three times a week...until the school banned it because one kid had a peanut allergy.
- AgentofId, on 02/26/2008, -1/+3Wow... so because your kid couldn't eat peanut butter at school it's been banished from their life entirely? That seems like harsh parenting. I can understand why the school would ban peanut products at school (since allergies like that can be potentially leathal, and I'm sure the school doesn't want to find out if that child's allergy is that bad or not)... what I don't understand is why you would ban it from the home too?
- siszam, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1What a logical comment.
- AgentofId, on 02/26/2008, -1/+3Wow... so because your kid couldn't eat peanut butter at school it's been banished from their life entirely? That seems like harsh parenting. - cnot3, on 02/26/2008, -2/+2SuperFood. One word, made of two words, which are both capitalized. Its super, thanks for asking?
- Shiftyeyedgoat, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7This list is pretty bogus; it's filled with foods already known to be healthy, and packed with myths and unsubstantiated claims about the foods (note the cinnamon update).
Though, most of the things on there are pretty tasty, I want to see someone grind all of these things up into a smoothie and drink them all at once.- Y0tsuya, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Besides, most cinnamon we eat isn't really cinnamon at all. From Wikipedia: "All of the powdered cinnamon sold in supermarkets in the United States is actually Cassia."
- DCGUY12, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I completely agree with you, these "claims" are mainly used to sell books or perpetuate food myths. Pom juice, the latest "fad" drink. Although blueberries are highest of all foods with Antioxidents, you can't "Linus Pauling" your way to weight loss etc. by just eating "Shuper Sfoods!"
- childofme, on 02/26/2008, -3/+0Cake is moist.
- badqat, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1The cake is a lie...fool!
- killbotX, on 02/26/2008, -3/+12Wait but what about Hamburger in a can?
- JonTheGoose, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7It's a list of Super Foods. Not a list of Super AWESOME foods.
- birdly, on 02/26/2008, -4/+1What is cacao? It sounds like a noise my cat makes when he has a hairball....
- badqat, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1You going to eat that hairball?
- repmekevets, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1found in chocolate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cacao
- birdly, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Woo hoo! I'm off to the Land of Chocolate!
Thanks!
- birdly, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Woo hoo! I'm off to the Land of Chocolate!
- EgaoNoGenki, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1It's time for a mirror. Please?
- miknight, on 02/26/2008, -4/+2I can't believe Quinoa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinoa) didn't make this list.
- hugeposuer, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3I believe you meant: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinoa
- soupr, on 02/26/2008, -2/+1put them all in a pill for me to take. i'm busy.
- mrgeekguy, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4McDonalds must have killed the site!
- Tweekster, on 02/26/2008, -2/+0I have 2 tablespoons of peanut butter before bed every night, along with some olive oil for the calories.
I am surprised eggs and milk are not on the list but glad to see blueberries and oats.- AgentofId, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Really? Eggs and Milk have both been swinging like a pendulum when it comes to their health benefits/drawbacks as long as I've been alive... I thought currently the consensus was that milk is super bad for humans and eggs are okay but not as great as we once thought?
- clkou, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1Meh, my superfoods are:
Oatmeal
Turkey
Chicken
Salmon
High in protein, fiber, and good taste. Low in fat and nasty taste.- dinostabOMG, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Sounds like a tasty breakfast shake.
- Tweekster, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0protein is the dirty word this year
- Gabberwok, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8Soylent green.
- mateo60, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2I prefer when it's made of "Low-Fat" people though. A little more expensive, but worth it.
- boxybrzown, on 02/26/2008, -1/+3"SuperFood" in this case translates roughly to "12 foods I picked off a list of 150 health foods without any particular reasoning".
- Stuffymonkey, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6Google cache
http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:http://startc ... - l800LEMMINGS, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2goji really should of be on this list and a lot of these are half assed super foods
- jahurt, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfberry
I love goji berries... just wish they weren't so expensive. - DCGUY12, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1CBC's Marketplace did an investigation on the goji juice which is sold by MLM
its a dud.
It seems to be.
Here’s a warning letter that the FDA recently sent to a Goji juice seller regarding the unsubstantiated claims that she was making for the product on her web site:
http://www.fda.gov/cder/warn/cyber/2006/CL226e.pdf
And three other heavily promoted supposedly health-enhancing juices (Mangosteen, Noni Juice, and pomegranate juice) are critically looked at here:
‘Squeezing cold cash out of three “hot” juices’:
http://www.cspinet.org/nah/11_06/juice.pdf
- jahurt, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfberry
- atlquaker, on 02/26/2008, -3/+1Where is Guiness on the list?
- TruthSerum44, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Really, how many times do we need to see a "Superfoods" article. Here, let me summarize all of them in one sentence: Drink plenty of water, eat your fruits, vegetables, nuts, and lean meats.
- InspectorGadget, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Egg whites need to be on this list.
- Typhoon2009, on 02/26/2008, -2/+1Shoot, eggs in general should be. I hear a lot that the cholesterol in them is actually the "good" kind. My source... the BodyBuilding.com site. Sure they may not all have PhDs, but those muscles don't lie.
- dinostabOMG, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1The goal of bodybuilders isn't to be as healthy as possible, it is to encourage hypertrophy - often at the expense of overall health and wellness if you're hardcore enough. Not that I disagree about eggs though.
- InspectorGadget, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Cholesterol, to an extent, is anabolic. My guess would be that people stimulating hypertrophy and strength through frequent weight training will derive little benefit from upping their cholesterol levels and gain much more mass simply by eating more.
- Tweekster, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Whole eggs really should be too.
- skellener, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Nope. Just the whites.
- Tweekster, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0Unless you are eating a TON of eggs per day the yolk is nothing to fear.
So if you are eating a dozen eggs a day, make half of them just the whites. but for most people the whole egg is good for you (dont start with the "that's where the cholesteral is either")
- Tweekster, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0Unless you are eating a TON of eggs per day the yolk is nothing to fear.
- Typhoon2009, on 02/26/2008, -2/+1Shoot, eggs in general should be. I hear a lot that the cholesterol in them is actually the "good" kind. My source... the BodyBuilding.com site. Sure they may not all have PhDs, but those muscles don't lie.
- Taiyaki, on 02/26/2008, -1/+0Didn't care about the list but the vid on the side was pretty good. Might try that shrimp dish.
- krazikamikaze, on 02/26/2008, -2/+3Missing from the list:
- sweet potatoes
- cottage cheese
- fish (watch out for mercury)
And some clarifications:
- peanut butter should be all natural ie only ingredients peanuts and salt
- oats should be steel cut or at least rolled. Instant oats aren't nearly as nutritious
Remember, the general rule is the less your food is processed the better. - ardeay, on 02/26/2008, -3/+1fail
- smurf22, on 02/26/2008, -2/+1How many times is this going to hit the front page?
- jfg84, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2As many times as I see somebody waddling down the street?
- Motocompo, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1No?
- HaloZero, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3The whole concept of "superfoods" is misleading. Yes there are foods that are healthy for you but they do not make you lose weight, they probably will not alter your vitamin intake considerably (unless you eat a lot of it, like 4-5 cups per day of it). A superfood is something that you should eat occasionally instead of say, cookies or a brownie, that's all. Do not move your diet around this or any other things that are considered better because of one particular chemical. Eat a balanced diet and occasional exercise is fine.
- DCGUY12, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1People seem that they can store up on the marketing concept "Super Foods" and be all better. Folks you can't, it's a myth.
- Mrdudeperson, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0I'll be eating nothing but theses foods for a week, then I'll get sick of 'em and go back to my unhealthy lifestyle.
- hardwickj, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0I think this website needs to have a little more of the superfoods they talk about.....
Server is D-E-A-D dead. - 776721, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0hemp milk or anything derived from the hemp nut.........doesn't get you high but i believe it could qualify for a "superfood"
- Tweekster, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0why not just regular old milk?
- frappe987, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0Cows hate cold hands :]
- Tweekster, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0why not just regular old milk?
- brettbum, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1no diet coke?
- Accolade1, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Eat more avocados.
- siszam, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1My doctor said they have the good fats/good cholesterol. They are good for the heart.
- stutimandal, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1DeathJux:
Just the list is not good enough since their goodness is also listed in the original article. - maiku00, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1wow, the list wasnt spread over 11 pages. i'm impressed.
- frappe987, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0word: "MULTIVITAMIN"
- winquerque, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0Yes it's really! We have to eat the best and this is good food for all of us!
Browsing Digg on your phone just got easier with our enhancements to the
