DeNiro's Restaurants Selling Endangered Species — With Pride
planetsave.com — Undercover operatives from Greenpeace conducted DNA testing and found that Robert DeNiro's London-based Nobu restaurants are selling endangered fish. After being confronted, the restaurant's confusingly twisted response was to proudly label the fish as "Endangered" on the menu.

- frankb00th, on 09/24/2008, -6/+4not necessarily. it also means that as the species gets rarer, prices go up then the people that need status food to up the neighbors start gorging themselves of it.
That's where it becomes indecent. Choosing profit over the eradication of a type of lifeform.
Certain fishers now use 60 mile LONG hooklines. A line that would essentially reach outer space in length.
This cannot be sustained by the sea in any way imaginable. - sgtbutterscotch, on 09/24/2008, -0/+6whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh

- changedmind, on 09/24/2008, -5/+15It sounds like the moron who wrote this thinks the chain will be embarrassed by this. He calls their response "stupid" but by putting an (*) - endangered on the menu it will only sell more fish!!! Next time I'm in London I know what I'm eating.

http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=LuNu2a4FGTI - BeyondGoodNEvil, on 09/24/2008, -4/+699% of all species have gone extinct. It happens. The only relevant question is whether or not a species' existence is an aid to the increased survivability of humanity, since we are the only species who can protect the whole earth against mass extinctions.
These "endangered species" laws are just biological status quo *****.
Look at it this way also. When one species goes extinct, another one will inevitably take its place in that same habitat.- askantik, on 09/24/2008, -7/+4lol... so humans are the only important species? We don't depend on other species, right? Definitely not...
/end sarcasm
But we do often cause extinctions. Perhaps this is what you meant? We are a part of nature, not above it. Period. And that's from both a philosophical as well as a biological standpoint. - BeyondGoodNEvil, on 09/24/2008, -1/+1I didn't digg you down, just to let you know. I was just meaning that humans are more valuable than other creatures only so far as we use the earth's resources more productively than they can, as a means to increase the survivability of all life on earth. Asteroids come, and perhaps mass historical extinctions coincide with our path through more dangerous areas of the galaxy as I read recently. We're never above nature, but it's coming to the point that anything we do to harm nature can be corrected by us within a few decades or centuries. Even with all the trash we produce, if we develop nanotechnology, we may be able to quickly sort all the trash into their original elements in an extremely short time. The key is to increase human intelligence and health. Sometimes animals are more deserving of life than certain humans though.

yeah, because free publicity is going to ***** their business plans. seriously, they aren't doing anything illegal. if people don't like it, get the fish on some kind of protection list and get the law to reflect the fish's status. you can't condemn the restaurant for doing everything by the book when its competition in undoubtedly serving the same thing.- myckG, on 09/24/2008, -0/+17Blue fin Tuna is highly regulated. The population might be at low levels but the fishing quota is now set at low levels also. Fishermen have now started catching them smaller and then fattening the fish up in large holding nets.
This article is just as skewed as Fox news.. fair and balanced right?? We report, you decide... right??
*****! - mike17032, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3No *****.
I already want to eat there, and had never heard of the place before this. If the stupid fish is endangered, I guess I had better do it soon. - WARonTREES, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3with out sounding anarchic, why don't poeple have the freedom to do what they want (granted, this is a UK based story). instead of people getting the fish on a "list" to protect it, why don't they mind their own and let people eat their tasty food? there's this phrase i've heard, "survival of the fittest," and if these fish are meant to survive they should be able to do it on their own.
- soomprimal, on 09/24/2008, -4/+3"Doing what you want" predicates on you doing that without hurting or infringing on another person. An argument can be made that, if you remove a certain animal from its ecosystem that in turn would damage the environment, that you may be infringing on others' rights to a balanced ecosystem.
- reaper527, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1in 99% of cases, i would agree with that (you absolutely don't sound anarchic), but in this case, i think soom is right.

- Gemfinder, on 09/23/2008, -8/+11They're letting the consumer dictate. Informed customers will make the choice and the market will follow. It may not be good for business but business can re-create itself according to market conditions.
Not defending the policy of serving endangered species but this isn't exactly crowing the status with arrogant pride. - cmscott, on 09/23/2008, -7/+66You people act like Robert DeNiro went out and caught all these fish himself just to serve at his restaurant. Bluefin tuna are commercially cultivated in Japan, and its popularity in sushi restaurants is what led to it be overfished and become endangered. So really, blame the laws and the fisheries for not allowing the stock to recover. The restaurant didn't do anything wrong; I'm sure it's delicious.
- gnuyen, on 09/24/2008, -10/+5It's this sort of behavior that makes us dependent on the government. Just because something isn't illegal doesn't mean it isn't wrong.
This is reprehensible because hunting a species to extinction is a selfish act which cannot be reversed. It eliminates the ability of people to enjoy the resource in the future.
All the libertarians out there that don't want to live in a nanny state shouldn't be justifying this behavior as it's not illegal so they can do what they want. Instead we should expect people to be responsible people, and disapprove when they are not. - Logicexe, on 09/24/2008, -8/+10You're confusing something's legality with its other values. It's not illegal to cheat on your spouse, but its still wrong, it's not illegal to smoke but it's still stupid, it's not illegal to be rude to everyone you meet but people will still think you're an ***** and it's not illegal to serve bluefin tuna but that doesn't mean it's a socially responsible thing to do given their status as an endangered species.
- Math, on 09/24/2008, -0/+9Japan has been illegally exceeding its annual quotas by up to three times the quota, so its Japan's fault that Bluefin tuna is endangered.
"If Japan had stuck to its quota, the fish stock would now be five times larger. "

- camilos007, on 09/24/2008, -4/+12Its greenpeace you jack ass. Learn to read your illiterate *****.
- dashboardradio, on 09/24/2008, -0/+42Japanese don't really give a ***** about what's endangered or not.
- magus_melchior, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3The Telegraph says it's the London locations, so that's one point against your broadside on an entirely different island nation. What's more, the reports suggest that it's isolated to London, which makes sense, because transporting Atlantic fish halfway across the globe is painfully expensive right now.
Also, the only reason Greenpeace did this is because Japanese chefs prefer bluefin, and because De Niro is attached to the restaurant chain. They are attention whores, for good or ill-- they spouted ***** when they railed at Apple, but they are accurate this time.
Some Japanese care about what's endangered. Some wish their government would stop whaling under stupid pretenses and overfishing the seas.- dashboardradio, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2From the article:
“Mr. Notar said he would like to take bluefin off the menu altogether, but the move was being resisted by the chain’s Japanese chefs who serve it in sushi and sashimi. In Japan, bluefin is considered the most delicious of all tuna species.”
Mr. Notar being the one in charge of the restaurants. Greenpeace only tested the ones in London, so it being "isolated in London" is a rather moot point; this could be more wide-spread.
I'm more likely to believe that the only reason this was reported and posted on here is because De Niro is attached to it; not that I have any affiliation with them, but Greenpeace does more than you think.
Where are these caring Japanese? They don't seem to be doing anything to stop the whaling or overfishing. It's the english, australians, and americans risking their lives to put an end to these activities, while the government turns a blind eye.
- dashboardradio, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2From the article:
- gridity, on 09/24/2008, -0/+4Obviously not all Japanese are careless with the ecosystem, but it's in keeping with what I've heard....I have a friend who is a part of the Sea Shepherd group that goes out and tries to stop Japanese whalers. The Japanese pretend they're doing scientific studies of whales, but really they're slaughtering thousands of what are supposed to be "protected" whales for the meat and oil. The Sea Shepherd is the only ship (I know of) that is out there trying to stop them. Interestingly, virtually ANYONE can join them on their expeditions - my friend was a full time web developer in NYC, and he got his company to let him go for two months to try to protect whales. He basically just had to pay for his plane ticket to Australia. His company obviously didn't pay him during this hiatus, but they let him go and come back. He said it was the experience of a lifetime - being in the open sea, seeing hundreds of whales, working with those passionate about our environment, and of course, the "thrill" of confronting the Japanese whalers.
So if you're up for a total life adventure and really care about protecting the endangered species... go check them out. http://www.seashepherd.org/

False - kelsosmythe, on 09/24/2008, -5/+7Nuke the whales!!
- changedmind, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3No, you need to cook them nice and slow. Smoked is good but not nuked.

- DiggEKE, on 09/24/2008, -2/+7Don't blame DiNiro, it's the manager's fault. DeNiro is just a silent partner. He doesn't partake in daily ops!
- magus_melchior, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1I'm sure the blogger's (and Greenpeace's) point is that De Niro can easily put a stop to this using his celebrity.
And a Tommy gun. You gotta do the Scarface thing if you want a manager to ***** his pants.

- franklymister, on 09/24/2008, -14/+15Douglas Adams was right about humanity.
If someone discovered a giant red button labeled DO NOT TOUCH - UNIVERSE SELF DESTRUCTION BUTTON, there would be a mad rush to press it, just to see what it does.
Keep on treating the ecosystem like a joke, after all, what harm could six billion humans possibly do?- changedmind, on 09/24/2008, -10/+5Do the worls a favour then and check the ***** out.
- bobartig, on 09/24/2008, -2/+4To be fair, we already know the ecological repercussions of having no blue fin tuna. That's basically where we are now. We've fished some areas clean. I'm sure it shifts the ecology about, promotes some species here and there, but there was no great human genocide over the loss of tuna. Same as with the dodo bird, and whatever other species we've managed to destroy.
There are no immediate tidal shifts as a result of us eating a species to nonexistance, its a gradual process. The main repercussion is that (in this case) the world gets a lot less tasty when we finish off the tunas. For certain, that sucks a fat one. But you're mumbling to yourself in the corner "just you wait, humans, you'll see!!!" It just doesn't work that way.- franklymister, on 09/24/2008, -2/+2The point isn't whether one species going extinct is going to destroy the world.
My point is that it all adds up. I'm sure it's hilarious to rape the environment daily by acting like just another animal species when we are actually a 6 billion strong, technologically advanced animal capable of ***** in our own food dish so much that we end up driving ourselves to ruin - I guess I just don't get the joke.
When one species on an island overtaxes its surroundings, the worst that can happen is that it runs out of food, or destroys its own habitat, and dies out on that island. The difference is, we're doing it on the entire planet, and we don't have another one to just hop to after we screw this one up.
We're like a frog in boiling water. Since we can't see the effects of each little action, we figure that nothing bad will ever happen. I'm not saying that killing off every blue fin tuna is going to wreak planetwide disaster. I'm just saying that making it into a boast on a menu is pathetic. - sunamc, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3to add to what fanklymister was saying:
It is difficult to predict what will happen to ecosystems if species are gradually removed.
Species within an ecosystem are interdependent. Therefore the removal of one species COULD have devastating effects. Although not all species are equal. Some species (keystone) will cause bigger changes to resilience and stability than other species. As for the tune species in the article, I'm not too sure. and again it brings me back to my first point:
It is difficult to predict what will happen to ecosystems if species are gradually removed.
- franklymister, on 09/24/2008, -2/+2The point isn't whether one species going extinct is going to destroy the world.
- frankb00th, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1great point
check out this gem of a doc if you can www.sharkwater.com
drives the point home
- bphicke, on 09/24/2008, -7/+17Good for him. We need to be eating these tasty creatures while there are still some left.
- nemo001, on 09/24/2008, -8/+3So, by marking menu items as endangered, the restaurant is, in essence, saying: 1. If you don't eat this endangered species treat, it won't be on the menu any more or 2. it is you who should feel guilty about ordering this finely cooked endangered species; it is endangered for a reason. The dissonance I'd feel trying to decide would probably force me to get up and leave. Or I'd order a salad.
- willrs, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3i would just eat the ***** fish
- nemo001, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1Fish? Their bald eagle is delicious.
- willrs, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3i would just eat the ***** fish
- rotendo, on 09/24/2008, -7/+5There are many, many, many, many more uncountable issues far more important and pertinent for us to worry about then some stupid fish. Sorry for being harsh, but its the truth, and if you don't like it, then your priorities are all screwed up. See the economy please.
- ashfish, on 09/24/2008, -2/+6So, how does that work? It's endangered but its not illegal to sell it? Doesn't that kind of undermine the point of the "endangered" status? Or is it not really endangered and just subject to ***** farming practices and "might become endangered" in Greenpeace's eyes?
Tuna FTW (I prefer yellow fin but that's just me) - KevinWhite, on 09/24/2008, -4/+4mmm, Bluefin Tuna is delicious!
