Lessons From Our Great-Grandfathers: How to Make Moonshine
sloshspot.com — Since I began paying more for gasoline per ounce then my favorite bottle of vodka, I have had to find creative ways to sustain my buzz. And since my friends are tired of me drinking their cabinets dry, I decided to distill my own moonshine. Yes, moonshine!

*Thinks the above poster may be the man from the video at the end of the article.* - Lowlypeon, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6Moonshine tastes best when drunk.
- cashman57, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2The smoothest moonshine I have had came from a little brown jug that was kept in a holder in my uncles rocking chair. He would replace the jug every year and after a year of sloshing back and forth it would still take your breath away but went down smooth!
The worst I had was from a guy who sold old car parts and kept his moonshine in an old school bus.
Good moonshine is a lost art.

- ifnotme, on 07/24/2008, -1/+15Why must moonshine always be drunk out of a jar?
- lmhoward, on 07/24/2008, -0/+12Appropriate glassware was hard to come by during prohibition. Come to think of it, in the final years, so was food.
- netgeek06, on 07/24/2008, -0/+12I haven't had one but If our great grandfathers have used that then it should be a good stuff.
- DigSomeMore, on 07/24/2008, -2/+11Ahhh yes.....
- MommaLu, on 07/24/2008, -0/+16Damn, my grand pappy! He's from WVA, why didn't he teach me this. I could've made some cheap booze and made a killing in high school.
- louiebaur, on 07/24/2008, -0/+9I love it! Just like Uncle Jesse used make it.
- shutaro, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Have mercy!

- PMG2007, on 07/24/2008, -0/+7That reminds me of the time I stole a bottle of wine and drank it and did not get drunk. I realized that it was non-alcoholic. Last time I steal alcohol from church (It is hard to find alcohol in 8th grade, not counting stealing it from neighborhood garage refrigerators).

old people have the best phrases for everything!- jaybol, on 07/24/2008, -3/+2i just thought of one that is totally unrelated (well maybe not totally but it would be a stretch)...my mom says "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" which could be relevant - "dont look a gift moonshine in the jar"
origins (courtesy of google and http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/117000.html):
The advice given in the 'don't look...' proverb is: when given a present, be grateful for your good fortune and don't look for more by examining it to assess its value.
As with most proverbs the origin is ancient and unknown. We have some clues with this one however. The phrase was originally "don't look a given horse in the mouth" and first appears in print in 1546 in John Heywood's A dialogue conteinyng the nomber in effect of all the prouerbes in the Englishe tongue, where he gives it as:
"No man ought to looke a geuen hors in the mouth."- RealmDown, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Never gaze soulfully, or scornfully, into the unbarred bicuspids of an equine gift.

- grungegbunny, on 07/24/2008, -4/+7Something the article fails to point out is if your not careful it may also produce Methanol (Wood Alcohol) and other toxins. Brew at your own risk.
- alapoet, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3I grew up in the hills of rural northwest Alabama, and first encountered a hidden moonshine still (yes, really) when I was but a lad.
Expertly made moonshine is among the finest (and most intense) experiences alcohol has to offer. Just don't plan on doing anything else that particular evening. - Sanduu, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4Moonshine FTW !

- Tddupre, on 07/24/2008, -2/+5Well my name's John Lee Pettimore
Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandaddy down here
He only came to town about twice a year
He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the revenue man wanted Grandaddy bad
He headed up the holler with everything he had
It's before my time but I've been told
you never come back from Copperhead Road
Grandaddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge
Bought it at an auction at the Mason's Lodge
Johnson County Sheriff painted on the side
Just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside
Well him and my uncle tore that engine down
I still remember that rumblin' sound
Well the sheriff came around in the middle of the night
Heard mama cryin', knew something wasn't right
He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load
You could smell the whiskey burnin' down Copperhead Road
I volunteered for the Army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first,'round here anyway
I done two tours of duty in Vietnam
And I came home with a brand new plan
I take the seed from Colombia and Mexico
I plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
And now the D.E.A.'s got a chopper in the air
I wake up screaming like I'm back over there
I learned a thing or two from ol' Charlie don't you know
You better stay away from Copperhead Road
