- karenben, on 06/12/2008, -8/+29The most unhealthy drink is soda. Here is why:
http://www.emedexpert.com/tips/soft-drinks.shtml- skellener, on 06/13/2008, -0/+4This article is condemning high fructose corn syrup, not soda. If it was condemning soda it would have included diet soda and club soda but those are never mentioned.

In order to sell food to millions of consumers, the food industry must make it appealing to as many as possible, from the young child to the elderly. In order to accomplish this, individual food suppliers use additives to make their foods taste better.

- akatherder, on 06/13/2008, -1/+3I stopped drinking pop (for the most part, not religiously) and started drinking black coffee without sugar. I couldn't find any bad health effects from coffee and it seems to be helping me lose weight. I just hope I'm not killing myself some other way.
- ohnoerino, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2I think you did the right thing. I've never been a huge pop fan, but I know the body processes high fructose syrup as if it was a fat (it stores it). Quitting soda is the best thing you can do jump start weight loss and a healthy lifestyle. Coffee in moderate use should not be a problem.

- digggggggggg, on 06/13/2008, -3/+16I like vitamin water because it tastes great. I don't know a single person who drinks it because of the whole "health" thing. The yellow flavor is definitely one of the better tasting drinks out there.
- LoganT, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2I could become addicted to Fruit Punch.
- wrestlingnrj, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1I like XXX, the black and white label, one the best.
- thespiff, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1XXX is also my favorite. And it has significantly less sugar than soda. So it's a pretty good soda alternative really...
- toasterweasel, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2And this site actually is fudging the truth a bit about the sugar in vitamin water. It's not the same sugar that you find in most soda which is, High Fructose Corn Syrup: Derived from cornstarch, usually a combination of 55 percent fructose and 45 percent sucrose. Treated with an enzyme that converts glucose to fructose, which results in a sweeter product. Used in soft drinks, baked goods, jelly, syrups, fruits and desserts.
While Vitamin water contains pure crystalline fructose which has much much less of an impact on your blood sugar thus is healthier for you. - macrymble, on 06/14/2008, -0/+1Exactly! Sometimes I just want something light and it's a lot better than soft drinks. It may not be healthy, but it's not not healthy.
If it didn't cost a freaking dollar for a 20oz bottle, I would probably drink a lot more of it.
- Pentagarn, on 06/13/2008, -0/+31Worst way to make a 20 item list: put each one on its own page
- bradkovach, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1More than half the content was below the fold on my modest 1280x800 screen. Obscene.
- nsundeepreddy, on 06/13/2008, -4/+5The whole idea of having soda by default with all meals itself is crap. I rarely see people opting for water at restaurents. Its either beer, wine or plain old soda. Dont even think of energy drinks and diet soda. They have enuf chemicals in them to dissolve hair and nails.
I would recommend water, tea and maybe coffee.- prophetpimp, on 06/13/2008, -2/+3in India and south Asia its either water or tea. We have colas and beer but they are a side order not the main refreshment. i am so glad that the stupid marketing/brainwashing of coke and pepsi hasn't worked as well in this region.
- Netrilix, on 06/13/2008, -0/+4I used to be part of the people you're describing, getting soda at every meal. Now it's orange juice at breakfast, water for any other meal (maybe a beer or mixed drink if I'm out to eat with friends).
- 1807, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2I drink water at every meal, I even do it when I eat out if I want to save a few bucks. But to be honest, sometimes I get pop at a resturant because I don't drink it at home. I dunno if EVERYONE can say the same, but I just wanted to give nsundeepreddy an idea of why some people order soda at resturants.
- kalii, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2lol you said "pop", yaw must be from down south :)
- drakia, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1***** you, I'm from Canada and we use "Pop" more often than "Soda." Crazy yank
- kalii, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2lol you said "pop", yaw must be from down south :)
- drakia, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Going out to a restaurant I'll have water, or Ginger Ale (Works great for settling an upset stomach ;)) but sitting around the house I tend to drink pop as there's a convenience store just around the corner, and I'd rather not pay $3 for a bottle of water when I could pay less for a 1L of pop. Also, I don't drink the tap water too often, as it starts tasting like dirt after it's been sitting around for a few hours... makes me a little uneasy drinking it in general.
- smashingmonkey, on 06/13/2008, -2/+13Sierra Nevada Stout for worst beer?! If you're rating beer by calories, you just don't get beer. That stout is pure goodness and you can't tell me it's unhealthy!
- MortalynFlux, on 06/13/2008, -3/+1American beers have many additives and preservatives. German beers or beers brewed in the German tradition do not. One dark German beer a week, which has more calories than light beer, is actually good for you because it has more flavonoids.
http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20031111/dark-beer- ...- blankman2g, on 06/13/2008, -1/+6I'm pretty sure a micro brew like Sierra Nevada does not have additives or preservatives, at least I hope not. Besides, most people who drink quality beers such as Sierra Nevada are not drinking a ***** ton like the assholes that drink Coors Light and Miller and Bud.
- xtinamo, on 06/13/2008, -0/+3I understand that we are being judged on our worst, most overly advertised beers, but America has actually made excellent brews in a few cases; Sierra Nevada being one of them. Their website discusses ingredients used that do not list additives or preservatives.
http://www.sierranevada.com/faqs_ales.asp - gregfadein, on 06/13/2008, -1/+1The thing is that preservatives and typical additives aren't actually bad for you, but disingenuous companies like Snapple harp on being preservative-free because their products wouldn't contain preservatives anyway.
It's faux-healthiness designed to get stupid people to consume gallons of high fructose corn syrup.
Same thing goes to the people that eat a bag of cookies a day, thinking they're somehow healthy because they're 'made with organic flour.'- kalii, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Reminds me of that episode of The Boondocks "The Block is Hot", .....and we know it is cruelty free because it says so on the label. lol
- smashingmonkey, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2I've had plenty of German beer - married a German and visit once a year. It's wonderful. But you can't judge American beer by our crappy past. We have some great brewers here now and Sierra Nevada is one of them.
By the way, hops act as a preservative. That's why IPAs are so damn hoppy - they were designed for long sea trips so they wouldn't spoil. - smashingmonkey, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2BTW, the German beer purity law, reinheitsgebot, is fairly limiting, as it allows for only water, barley, and hops as permitted ingredients. Germans make some of the world's best beers, but they also often act as if there are no other beers in the world.
What would Belgian beers be without sucrose? Stouts and porters without malts? The oatmeal stout without oats for the love of beer!
- donkevin, on 06/13/2008, -3/+1Sierra Nevada Porter and Stout taste like anus in a bottle. I prefer Boulevard Wheat with lemon.
- MortalynFlux, on 06/13/2008, -3/+1American beers have many additives and preservatives. German beers or beers brewed in the German tradition do not. One dark German beer a week, which has more calories than light beer, is actually good for you because it has more flavonoids.

- 0260, on 06/13/2008, -2/+5i thought unhealthy means like it can kill you or something, this is just for people that like to do math with their meals
- Owwmykneecap, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2there is an energy drink here called Boost. (its a cheap red bull knock off) that has 1000% GDA of some vitamin.
10 days worth in one bottle.
Or BPM by coca cola, it says a 250ml serving has 50%GDA sugar. It comes in a 500ml bottle.- thespiff, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Most vitamins aren't toxic unless you consume them in HUGE amounts. You just urinate them out of you don't need them.
- cm32438, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2It's most likely B12 that it has so much of.
I know that Spike energy drinks for instance have 25000% of your daily value of B12 per can:

- Gbobrt4, on 06/13/2008, -6/+1omm nom nom nom
- IAmCuteKitty, on 06/13/2008, -4/+1:o
- ljette86, on 06/13/2008, -0/+4Anything that tells me I need to drink more light beer is just plain full of it. You don't drink beer to lose weight at all. Light beer is just gross. Maybe they are hoping it will make you throw up to lose weight. As for Sierra Nevada being the worst beer, something like the Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA has around 450 calories per bottle, so I don't know where they are getting their info.
- bigtimslim, on 06/13/2008, -1/+8awww I ***** love sunkist
- Lapper, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2I took one look at that hefty stack of links and clicked right back to the comments. I feel like I should take the time to paste the whole thing here....
- ZubZerp, on 06/13/2008, -2/+6I'm getting tired of all these articles about what not to eat and what to eat. It's simple really, don't eat too much, eat plenty of vegetables, if you're not hungry, then you don't need to eat, and try to drink water when you're thirsty instead of other drinks. Also, exercise daily.
- kxxb, on 06/13/2008, -1/+3That's all one really needs to know, and yet, whole books are written on the subject of dieting.
- crystalpup, on 06/13/2008, -1/+3Who cares....Gimme a beer!
- GoGoPoCoSo, on 06/13/2008, -0/+411. Worst Chocolate Milk
Nesquik (16 oz bottle)
*****!- bradkovach, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Does this apply to the powdered version that I consume in massive quantities in lieu of the expensive bottled version and, of course, soda pop?
- jpstanle, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1***** IT! WE'LL DO IT LIVE!!
- rsibayan, on 06/13/2008, -1/+57Because no one wants to go waste their life clicking 20 different pages...
20. Worst Light Beer
Samuel Adams Light (12 oz bottle)
124 calories
10 g carbohydrates
Not a bad beer, but don't think you can sit around sipping these for four quarters without eventually paying the price in belly fat. With tasty beers like Beck's 64-calorie Premier Light readily available, why throw away 60 calories every time you twist the top?
19. Worst "Healthy" Drink
Glaceau VitaminWater (20 oz bottle)
130 calories
33 g sugar
Vitamins and water might sound like the ultimate nutritional tag team, but what the label doesn't say is that a bottle of this stuff carries nearly as much sugar and calories as a can of Coke. Makes sense, though, since this so-called functional beverage is produced by our often-sugar-crazy friends at The Coca-Cola Company.
18. Worst Soda
Sunkist (12 oz can)
190 calories
52 g sugar
Sweetened soft drinks account for about 10 percent of the average American's calorie consumption-about 200 completely unnecessary calories a day. For someone looking to lose 10 pounds fast, there is no simpler, quicker way to do it than by canning the soda.
17. Worst Beer
Sierra Nevada Stout (12 oz bottle)
210 calories
20 g carbohydrates
A full-flavored beer, no doubt, but one that packs a hefty caloric wallop. Switching out a sixer a week for a lighter beer would save you 9 pounds of extra flab this year. Cheers to that!
16. Worst Lemonade
Minute Maid Lemonade (20 oz bottle)
250 calories
68 g sugar
This is little more than glorified sugar water, with only a trace amount of real juice. Lemonade in general is a dubious drink, but if you can't stand the thought of summer without it, try Santa Cruz-brand lemonade. When you bring the bottle home, dump it into a pitcher and add 4 ounces of water for every 8 ounces of lemonade. Otherwise, you may as well drink a Coke with a squeeze of lemon.
15. Worst Tea-Like Substance
SoBe Zen Tea (20 oz bottle)
275 calories
70 g sugar
Though the name might scream "healthy" to the unsuspecting drinker, there is little to celebrate about this beverage. SoBe can cram their drinks full of healthy-sounding extracts and vitamin supplements, but they can't escape the fact that high-fructose corn syrup outranks tea on the ingredients list.
14. Worst Energy Drink
Rockstar Original (16 oz can)
280 calories
62 g sugar
Energy drink makers might feign a level of health by fortifying their products with a cocktail of vitamins and minerals, but don't be fooled: Any minimal benefit they might provide is snuffed out by the blanket of sugar and calories each can contains. Want energy? Try a cup of homebrewed black tea. It nearly zero calories and contains a deluge of disease-fighting antioxidants.
13. Worst Iced Tea
Lipton Iced Brisk Lemon Iced Tea (20 oz bottle)
325 calories
81 g sugar
Iced tea is loaded with metabolism-boosting, cancer-fighting compounds called polyphenols, but Lipton does its best to undo any potential healthy benefit you might derive from the tea's antioxidants by drowning them in 20 teaspoons of sugar. Your tea of choice should carry no more than 15 grams of sugar per 20-ounce serving.
12. Worst Juice Imposter
Arizona Kiwi Strawberry (23.5 oz can)
360 calories
84 grams of sugar
These hulking calorie cannons (5 percent juice, 95 percent sugar water) are sold at gas stations and convenience stores across America for the low, low price of 99 cents, making this quite possibly the cheapest source of empty calories in the country.
11. Worst Chocolate Milk
Nesquik (16 oz bottle)
400 calories
10 g fat (6 g saturated)
60 g sugar
Quik and other chocolate milk manufacturers try to sell parents on the bone-building calcium found in their product, but what they don't talk about is the fact that a single bottle of this stuff contains as much sugar as three Haagen Dazs Vanilla and Almond ice cream bars. Yikes. Make it yourself at home with 2 percent milk and a scoop of real powdered cocoa-you'll save about 150 calories, plus get the antioxidant benefits of cacao without the high-fructose corn syrup.
10. Worst Chai Tea Drink
Caribou Coffee Large Chai Tea Latte
420 calories
47 g sugar
This is exactly the kind of drink that health-conscious consumers knock down each morning thinking they're doing themselves a favor. Nothing could be further from the truth. Flavored lattes-even ones flavored with seemingly healthy stuff like chai-are bad news. Stick to skinny lattes or unsweetened chai.
9. Worst Kid's Hot Beverage
Cosi Kid's Hot Chocolate (12 oz)
436 calories
60 g sugar
While most parents sip their lattes and cappuccinos, most kids sip on hot chocolate. Problem is, few things could be worse for a growing body. There are more calories in this small drink than in Cosi's Gooey Grilled Cheese sandwich, plus enough sugar to send your kids bouncing off the walls.
8. Worst Summer Cocktail
Pina Colada
625 calories
75 g sugars
Made from a blend of sickly-sweet pineapple juice and fat-riddled coconut milk, pina coladas may be this summer's biggest beach-body saboteurs. In fact, the only redeeming part of this drink is the garnish - that lonely chunk of pineapple hanging from the rim. Try a lime daiquiri or a mojito instead and save up to 400 calories.
7. Worst Coffee Alternative
Starbucks Venti White Hot Chocolate
640 calories
23 g fat (15 g saturated)
76 g sugar
Caffeine abstainers will find little nutritional refuge in Starbucks' hot chocolate concoctions. This one packs an entire day's worth of saturated fat, with more than enough sugar to set you up for a dramatic mid-afternoon energy crash. Stick with the Steamed Apple Juice instead.
6. Worst Hot Coffee
Starbucks Venti 2% Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha
660 calories
22 g fat (14 g saturated)
95 g sugar
Important Rule of Thumb: Avoid holiday-themed items from coffee shops at all costs. From peppermint to egg nog to pumpkin, these are often the most sugar- and fat-packed drinks you'll find at places like Starbucks. Make your own flavored drinks instead, using skim milk, sugar-free syrups, and, of course, skipping the whip.
5. Worst Blended Fruit Drink
Baskin-Robbins Pomegranate Banana Fruit Blast Smoothie (32 oz)
1,020 calories
232 g sugar
With three of the five worst drinks in America, you have to wonder if Baskin-Robbins is in bed with the sugar cane industry. One thing is for sure: People ordering this "smoothie" expecting a healthy afternoon snack have something else coming to them. The second ingredient, after water, is sugar. If you must sip on something at Baskin- Robbins, make it a small low-fat Cappuccino Blast, which has just 220 calories and one-fifth of the sugar of this Fruit Blast.
4. Worst Frozen Coffee Drink
Cosi Gigante Double OH! Arctic (24 oz)
1,033 calories
35 g fat
177 g carbohydrates
Frozen coffee amalgamations pollute the antioxidant powers of a simple cup of joe with a huge hit of whole milk, sugary syrups, and whipped cream. What you end up with, in worst-case scenarios like this, is half a day's worth of calories, ready to be sipped down in a matter of minutes. Want a cold caffeine kick? Try iced coffee.
3. Worst Smoothie
Jamba Juice Peanut Butter Moo'd Power Smoothie (30 oz)
1,170 calories
169 g sugars
Jamba Juice calls it a smoothie; we call it a milkshake, with more sugar than an entire bag of chocolate chips. (Note: We're pretty sure this is the drink Hollywood actors rely on when looking to put on 20 pounds for the role as a heavy!)
2. Worst Milkshake
Baskin-Robbins Large York Peppermint Pattie Shake (32 oz)
2,210 calories
103 g fat (57 g saturated)
281 g sugar
The freakish brother of the Heath monster, the York shake earns its title as the most sugar-saturated product in America. To put it in perspective, you'd have to down 15 Twinkies to match the sugar content in this Baskin-Robbins blunder.
1. The Worst Drink in America
Baskin-Robbins Large Heath Bar Shake
2,310 calories
108 g fat (64 g saturated)
266 g
Let's look at America's Worst Drink in numbers:
73: The number of ingredients that go into this milkshake.
66: The number of teaspoons of sugar this drink contains.
11: The number of Heath Bars you would have to eat to equal the number of calories found in one Baskin Robbins Large Heath Bar Shake.
12: The average number of minutes it takes to consume this drink.
240: The number of minutes you'd need to spend on a treadmill, running at a moderate pace, to burn it off.- ep53, on 06/13/2008, -1/+2I wish i could collapse you post, but not bury you. Your post took up half the page... Thanks for the effort though.

- ep53, on 06/13/2008, -1/+2I wish i could collapse you post, but not bury you. Your post took up half the page... Thanks for the effort though.
- lot665, on 06/13/2008, -1/+15In other words, "The 20 Most Delicious Drinks in America."
- Puffles, on 06/13/2008, -0/+5"66: The number of teaspoons of sugar this drink contains."
That's really unnecessarily sweet. It would probably taste better with only 20 teaspoons of sugar. - webkami, on 06/13/2008, -4/+5Dear Webmaster,
There is a new technology called AJAX. If that is too hard to learn I still have a happy news for you.
It is possible to put more than 1 item from a list on a page.
Try 5 / page for a starter.
Thank you
Interweb Users - zmigliozzi, on 06/13/2008, -2/+4What's so unhealthy if you only drink in moderation?
- timisondigglol, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2So I'm drinking this horrible can of sunkist thinking its probably killing the inner wall of my stomach as much as it is killing my taste buds and it just so happens I find this crap this list. Hooray. Too bad the tap water here tastes like the tijuana river.
- frisk415, on 06/13/2008, -2/+5I ***** hate this site. All of the examples are stupid as *****. The worst drink in America is some stupid Baskin Robins thing? Who gives a ***** and who the ***** drinks that?
- ophello, on 06/13/2008, -2/+1someone had too much sugar. calm down...whoa, bessie, whoa...
- skymint, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Baskin-Robbins Large Heath Bar Shake a.k.a. full day meals in 1
- zdiddy85, on 06/13/2008, -0/+3***** that I'm going to buy a Sunkist right now.
- FujiwaraTofu, on 06/13/2008, -1/+1Hot coffee? Hot coffee is never bad. Oh, wait... we're talking about actual drinks here?
- Ansem, on 06/13/2008, -0/+7Wasn't this just on Digg like a week ago?
- cbartlett, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Maybe. Or maybe you're thinking of one of the countless other Mens Health Top X Whatever Food lists that circulate around.
- ophello, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2does it matter?
- cm32438, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2Welcome to Digg...
- eliasg, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2Those are the number of calories in a 20oz bottle of Vitamin Water, but they're not the number of calories in a serving. Each bottle is 2.5 servings. You don't have to drink the whole thing in one sitting, I don't.
- ThunderDigger, on 06/13/2008, -1/+5umm vitamin water does not contain sugar or high fructose corn syrup like coke does. Read the label(not just he nutrition facts, the ingredients are just as important). You know one large apple has 23 grams of sugar? Sugars are not bad for you, the kind and quantity that you consume are. Also, calories are your friends, they keep you alive.
- byronm, on 06/13/2008, -1/+2I think people forget that.. Sugar isn't necessarily bad either, its Corn Syrup in our sodas that is hurting us. Simple Sugars are fairly easy for the body to digest. I wish Coke or Pepsi would go full swing back to sugar myself!
- gregfadein, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1You're aware that fructose is a simpler sugar (a monosaccharide) than sucrose (table sugar, a disaccharide), right?
All sugars are ridiculously easy to digest.
HFCS tastes like crap, but it's statistically no more or less healthy than any other sugar.
I also crave for the day that Coke goes back to sugar, but given that Congress just overwhelmingly voted for the last farm bill, we're gonna have a lengthy wait on that.

- altryan, on 06/13/2008, -0/+3Do they separate each item in the hopes that you will accidentally click on an ad?
- kjr07, on 06/13/2008, -1/+0"With tasty beers like Beck's 64-calorie Premier Light readily available, why throw away 60 calories every time you twist the top?"
You've got to be kidding me. Why not do a 1:1 ratio of the Beck's and water? Even less calories! - murzzy, on 06/13/2008, -3/+1How many times is this story going to be submitted?!?!
- 808ethan, on 06/13/2008, -2/+1We're all gonna die. Lets just die happy ;-)
- kalii, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2It's not about dieing its about being healthy while we are alive ;-)
- Fighter4rent, on 06/13/2008, -2/+2the article states "Want energy? Try a cup of home brewed black tea. It nearly zero calories". this is totally wrong because ask any dietitian and they will tell you that caffeine in tea doesn't give you energy only calories give you energy. calories are essential to survive so i don't think theirs any point in an article which try's to tell you they unhealthy you'd need to drink 9 cans of Rockstar Original to exceed your daily calorie allowance
- FREETHINKER2008, on 06/13/2008, -1/+1Sunkist is the worst soda? What about Tab?
- i4ybrid, on 06/13/2008, -0/+3What about the crap they sell in the corner deli's that come in that grenade? The one with the tin foil for a cap. It's like sugar poured into food coloring. I think Dave Chapelle called it "purple drink"
- kalii, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2lol the memories I haven't seen one of those things forever.
- dcmcderm, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2Triple shots of jack daniels isn't on the list...woo hoo i'm safe to have 5 or 6 of those today!
- kalii, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1So what I get from this list is don't drink any Coke or Baskin Robins products?
- londubh, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1I heard about a drink this morning called a Margeri Ta Ta. (envision boobies)
- egoideal, on 06/13/2008, -0/+3I hate sites like this. There is absolutely nothing special about being able to look at a bottle and read that it has x amount of calories and y amount of sugar, and this in no way proves the drink is unhealthy. Like the vitamin water. I think over a full days supply of vitamin c and a high amount of other vitamins would qualify it as at least semihealthy, but no. It has 33g of sugar, so it is unhealthy. FYI, right now I'm drinking a guava smoothie that just has guava, cane sugar and milk, and it has 33g of sugar. If someone thinks this thing is unhealthy for me then they are an idiot.
