#1 USC loses to unranked Stanford in biggest college football upset of 2007
scores.espn.go.com — Consider the numbers: USC hadn't lost at home in 36 games. The Trojans were 41-point favorites over Stanford. Now know this: the Cardinal beat John David Booty and No. 1 USC 24-23 on Saturday night, the Trojans' first loss at L.A. Coliseum since 2001 ... to Stanford.

- DannyAndNina, on 10/10/2007, -3/+73To clarify: USC was #1 in the USA Today poll, #2 in the AP poll... and to think that Stanford went 1-11 last season.
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11To say the least, it was an AMAZING game. Tavita Pritchard is a backup QB also! Dugg for competition. Nobody can beat my Hawaii though ;)
- NaziHatinChimp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Because no one plays them.
- dtrinh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It was also Tavita's FIRST college start. Anyone that can lead an unranked team over a No.1 (heck, 2) team in their very first start is Heisman material.
- ST0N3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17how about the university of illinois' two consecutive defeats of ranked teams? the fighting illini were 2-10 last year, and beat #21 Penn State AND #5 Wisconsin this year. that's more of a turn around. 5-1 FTW
- NaziHatinChimp, on 10/10/2007, -15/+4Wow your underrated illini beat two overrated teams. The big ten sucks.
- Farnn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1And yet a Pac-10 team just lost to ND and USC lost to Stanford.....
- NaziHatinChimp, on 10/10/2007, -15/+4Wow your underrated illini beat two overrated teams. The big ten sucks.
- lordmike, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Will USC be dropped from the top 25, like Michigan was? It was the bigger upset.. Doubtful... USC is still the media's darling, while Michigan is its bitch.
- eric0213, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Stanford is Division-I though. Granted Appalachian State is probably the best Division-II team and could beat many Division-I schools, but there's a big difference. USC has also proven themselves against other opponents, which Michigan hadn't done. They've squeaked by a few opponents whom they should have beaten easily, but a win's a win.
- schmons, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3appy state is div 1-aa not div-II
- momomathew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Who do you think wins in Stanford vs Appalachian State? USC has proven itself against who exactly??? If the polls didn't have so much man love for Pete Carroll, they would have dropped out of the 25.
- NSNick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not even out of the Top 10. Ridiculous.

- blueRAP, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3crap i double posted.. you know what to do
- blueRAP, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3There is and will be no bigger upset this year than Michigan's lost to App. State. 1-AA team beat the #5 1-A team...
- momomathew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0WTF???? Stanford would lose 9 out of 10 times to App. State.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No they wouldn't.

- theblooms, on 10/10/2007, -12/+7#11 USC WON their game this week. They convincingly beat #8 Kentucky at home 38-23. #2 Southern Cal lost to ***** Stanford.
The REAL USC - Founded 1801, 49 years before CA was a state, 79 years before Southern Cal existed.- abird, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Even though you're right, the overwhelming majority of people outside of the South-Eastern portion of this country identify USC with Southern Cal.
And, really, the Trojans have had a far stronger program -- up until yesterday, of course.
- abird, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Even though you're right, the overwhelming majority of people outside of the South-Eastern portion of this country identify USC with Southern Cal.
- soulshinejam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6all this attention and hype for USC, yet no one watched the (AP) #1 ranked LSU playing the defending national champs Florida in Baton Rouge in front of a record crowd in Death Valley last night. it was one of the best games of football in years, and without a doubt the best this week.
LSU 28-24- andyvarner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Damn right it was. Although personally, I enjoyed watching Auburn over Florida last week.
- AuburnTigers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It was a great game, even though I dislike both of those teams, they're Auburn's main SEC foes (other than the Tide). But wait till Auburn goes to Baton Rouge in two weeks for the battle of the Tigers. That's gonna be a great game, watch for the upset, Auburn took down LSU AND Florida last year, and Florida again this year, can they repeat?
- andyvarner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0We'll see man, all I know is I was at Toomer's after Florida and I'll damn sure be there if we take down LSU.
- andyvarner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Damn right it was. Although personally, I enjoyed watching Auburn over Florida last week.

- mojaam, on 10/10/2007, -8/+77I love it when teams (USC, Ohio State last season) get super hyped beyond reality and fall.
- sjons, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8so right, go to http://usctrojans.cstv.com/ and watch the coach just stammer and stutter all over the place about the loss, pathetic
- hiteshkumar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0What to you expect him to do?
- sambapati87, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Ohio State student and fan here, but I totally agree with you - we weren't ready for Florida.

- momomathew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Columbus born and bred, Tressel was outcoached. You put Urban Meyer on OSU sideline and the Buckeyes win.
- mhensley1288, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3O-H!
- jerrylin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I'm a Trojan here, but you hit it spot on - This is what makes College football great. The NFL has the speed, etc, but college has unpredictability and upsets driven by the desire to win.
- podalirius, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I think you mean USC and MICHIGAN this year. Losing in the national championship isn't anywhere near comparable. USC and UM were overrated, OSU was undefeated all season and just chocked, HUGE difference.
- sjons, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8so right, go to http://usctrojans.cstv.com/ and watch the coach just stammer and stutter all over the place about the loss, pathetic
- dustyshadow, on 10/10/2007, -38/+12PAC-10 = most overrated conference in college football history. USC = most overrated football team in college football history.
- underwise, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14usc is overrated but the pac-10 is a pretty good division, not better than the sec but still pretty good
- ScottoGato, on 10/10/2007, -16/+9On the contrary, I believe it's these SEC and ACC teams that are the most overrated in college sports. Put any team in the Pac-10 and they'll end up at the bottom of the conference. The Pac-10 is a gauntlet that only the most rounded teams can end up undefeated or survive with just 1 loss.
- Kyouto, on 10/14/2007, -0/+10Nah there's no way the SEC is overrated. Especially not this year, with Kentucky and South Carolina being as good as they are. The only certain win you've got in the SEC is Vanderbilt and Miss State. and even they've beaten top tier SEC teams (Georgia and Auburn, respectively.)
- theblooms, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Kentucky hasn't really played anybody. USC is for real though. 3-1 in conference (only loss to #1 LSU), held LSU to their lowest point total, #1 pass defense in the nation, made pre-season Andre Heisman candidate Woodson look like a punk on ESPN last Thursday night.
- dustyshadow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3LOL. You're funny!
- underwise, on 10/14/2007, -4/+72You could make a case that the Appalachian State win was bigger, but Stanford beat USC without two of its best players, starting QB T.C. Ostrander and RB Toby Gerhart and they went 1-11 last season!!
- Goodbyeworld, on 10/10/2007, -10/+4No you couldn't. Appalachian State wins national championships all the time. And when you think Stanford, what do you think of?
- tonycomputerguy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Personally, I think "Thank god my Wolverines getting trashed by Appalachian wasn't the biggest upset of 2007!"
- grakker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think,"Very nice campus."
- mojaam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually, before App State beat Michigan, all we know about them was that they were "HOT! HOT! HOT!" We didn't know about their national championships or their location for that matter until after.
- fakeid781, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14App State is a bigger upset being that they are a lower division team. There national champion shouldn't have been able to compete with a Division 1 top 25 team. Stanford beating USC is a big upset but not as big as a lower division team rocking Michigan
- BedlamX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Do you know what makes a school 1A instead of 1AA.......http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/archives/2006/09/ ...
The quality of your football program isn't a factor..If it was Temple would have been Div 1AA Long ago
- BedlamX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Do you know what makes a school 1A instead of 1AA.......http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/archives/2006/09/ ...
- podalirius, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I agree, App State was a bigger upset. #5 UM ESPN touted national championship caliber team gets beat by D1 AA team. That will probably never be topped, at least not for a long, long time. Another overrated team getting beat by a conference rival (given Stanford isn't that good, but neither is PAC 10) does not top Michigan's all time greatest upset in the history of sports.
- adrenaline33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Lol I'm not sure you can make a case that missing their QB made the game more difficult for them considering the guy who replaced him basically won the game for Stanford.
- Goodbyeworld, on 10/10/2007, -10/+4No you couldn't. Appalachian State wins national championships all the time. And when you think Stanford, what do you think of?
- archer104, on 10/10/2007, -2/+94Tomorrows headline: TROJANS BUST!
- Ridikul, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4SEC is dominant. You have Ole Miss at the bottom, put them in another conference and they'd get at least 8 wins. I didn't even watch USC and Stanford, I was watching a classic in the making, Florida vs. LSU. What a game.
- medieval33025, on 10/10/2007, -1/+45Final :54 of the game.

- crawf061, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2You've got to go for the extra point in this situation. There would be no advantage to just taking a knee when you can kick the extra point for the win.
just in case you missed it --> /sarcasm

- daniel2e, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Wow, worst announcing ever. Touchdown USC? An utterly inconsequential dialog on whether they would go for 1 or 2?
- crawf061, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You know it is a huge upset when the announcers can't even keep their stuff straight. They were obviously shaken.
- eddy144, on 10/10/2007, -15/+1dont you love it when the last 54 seconds of a game take 3 minutes and 13 seconds?
what a poopy sport.- alucinante, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7yeah as opposed to 'soccer' where the REF decides when it's over. 'injury time' is that what they call it? that's ridiculous.
- momomathew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Let me see... soccer 90 minutes of non-stop running. Football, 3-5 seconds of action followed by a minutes of standing around.....
- Kazbaeden, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22Hahaha, I love those girls crying at the end. Makes it so much funnier.
- AHippie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sounds like John Madden...

SC fans are probably the most obnoxious and arrogant in the nation. Way to sock it to em.- jserio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Agreed. Those arrogant jerks needed a reality check. And what better way to give it to them but in their own house!
- sinurgy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Now worries, as soon as USC starts losing, all those loud obnoxious "fans" will be gone. They weren't around 10 years ago and they won't be around 10 years from now!
- digggggggggg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Dude I support Cal and even I think this is awesome.
- Munkym, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24Yep, definitely watched this game. The WHOLE restaurant screamed when Stanford tied it up in the 4th. Everyone started laughing at the lone guy with a USC hat... oops.

- hammerpants, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Dittos from a Florida fan...since they couldn't pull it off tonight. Good game, but LSU just wanted it more...and was better. And UF's defense blows. So, thanks, Stanford.

- StingerMS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27Wow, those announcers SUCK!
- briguyd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yeah, first they got the team who scored wrong, then they thought that Stanford needed an extra point to tie, not to win.
- briguyd, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2Double post, bury this.
- JLecker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Man, this is going to be a really great season! First App State, then Stanford--what kind of crazy stuff is going to happen next?

- CWal37, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2Buried as inaccurate. As far as I'm aware there is more delicious 2007 to be had.
- Retsep, on 10/10/2007, -11/+38You mean second biggest...Stanford is still I-A. App State I think still holds the biggest upset award this year.
- TheBigBad, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Nope. Appy State may be D2 but they are still a really good D2 team. many publications had Stanford picked as one of the 10 worst D1 football programs of 2007. They were a 40 point underdog, on the road, playing against a #1/#2 ranked team. When is the last time a 40 point underdog won a football game? The Stanford win is a bigger upset than Appy State.
- Kyouto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Not to mention Stanford was missing 2 of its starters, including the quarterback. Remember that this was Pritchard's first ever college football start. That's quite a statement.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Appalachia State could beat perhaps half of the 1-A teams. They definitely could beat 1-11 teams.
And not only was USC ranked higher, but it wasn't some BS pre-season ranking. - NaziHatinChimp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Yeah but the Surprise there isn't app state is good, it's that Michigan sucks.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It shouldn't have been that much of a surprise. This was the first game of the season, so no one had seen Michigan in action yet. Furthermore, Michigan under Carr has very frequently been overrated going into the season.
- TheBigBad, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Nope. Appy State may be D2 but they are still a really good D2 team. many publications had Stanford picked as one of the 10 worst D1 football programs of 2007. I guess that you can look at it this way: something THIS huge has gotta make the rest of the season pretty damn interesting, right? - LxRogue, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I'm not...its an established fact that Stanfurd football isn't for real. Plus we are now ranked #2 :D
- digggggggggg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Same here bro.
- Vandango, on 10/16/2007, -1/+16Cal fans rejoice a Stanford victory!
I think I just saw a pig fly by my window. - dolemite01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7This is why the play the game, period.
And if memory serves me correctly the last home lost prior to today for USC was Stanford- natenovs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1in 2001 !! a hell of a streak id say.
- iandoh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0stanford's tv commercials shown during the game seem to be inspired by guitar hero players and lolcat lovers: http://hailstanford.stanford.edu
- thelatermonths, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Nobody can beat your Hawaii because "your Hawaii" plays no one even halfway decent.
- axisnate02, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah this is the only news that has kept me from killing myself tonight. Unfortunately I was at the UCLA vs. Notre Dame game...
- perryjoyce, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So was I. Accidentally bought tickets in the Notre Dame section, too. It was nice to bond with them for the thirty seconds that the crowd went crazy as they announced the scores. Almost made up for the loss to an 0-5 team.
- RollFizzlebeef, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Considering App State are two-time defending I-AA champs, I didn't consider their defeat of Michigan to be the massive upset it was portrayed as.
USC, however, has no excuse here. - whandsfield, on 10/15/2007, -9/+12App State was the bigger upset, they are not in the same league, anb btw, how many national championships has michigan won??? Oh yeah, so yes, they still should have beaten a AA team who had 2 championships.

So that makes you kind of an idiot. - Twigleaf, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Don't forget So. Florida running the gambit so far too. In the state of Florida, them being the undeafed team of the state with their schedule puts them as a good upsetter of others.
- lordmike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Division 1 is division 1... App State could beat at lsast half of the division 1A teams in the country... They certainly could beat Stanford, yet Stanford beat USC.... So, it's not the bigger upset...

- SD70MACMAN, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22As a Washington State University student, NCAA-F fan, and USC hater, I have send my congratulations out to Stanford. Anyone that can take down the mighty USC machine deserves some time in the lime light. All I can say is wow, astonishing game. John David Booty can suck my balls.
- dvgrhl, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8As a UW student, when you say "I have send my congratulations..." it just makes me happy that I chose the right school.
- SD70MACMAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I would think even the we're-holier-than-thou UW could be happy that someone beat USC, but apparently, I was wrong. Still a bit bitter about the Stanford loss last year, perhaps?

- RyanZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I'm a current 'SC student and even I think USC has been overrated all season. After last week's game I knew it was just a matter of time until something like this happened. Hats off to Stanford.
- Twigleaf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think the biggest flaw in the BCS system is the pre-season ratings. Nothing should come out until a few games are played, otherwise it can in theory end up being a news media's bias toward certain teams that may have been a powerhouse in the last 5 years.
- endersadvocate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The BCS has not even started to rate teams yet...
- againstthegrain, on 10/14/2007, -0/+0good for you. so many SC fans think their teams are so incredible and wont ever hear talk of someone being able to beat them. the majority of them need to get over themselves. i'm glad not all of them think like that.

- ST0N3, on 10/10/2007, -9/+8SCREW THIS. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE ILLINI BEATING WISCONSIN.
- humpy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Illni were favored in by a touchdown in Vegas. Not that big of a deal... And that folks, is why you don't bet against vegas odds.
- nonstop87, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Now thanks to this Wisconsin can go down without to much o they suck thankfully :D
- JasonDelta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5UCLA may have lost their game, but while I was at the Rose Bowl for the game the highlight was without a doubt the WHOLE stadium cheering for Stanford's win over USC - yep, that includes the visiting Notre Dame fans. It was awesome to say the least.
- tito184, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I would think they would cheer the loudest. You should hear my SC friends talk trash about Notre Dame.
- Lkr721993, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2notre dame sucks =)

- fzylgc, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3*****, YEAH!!! GO STANFORD!!!
- Ike0, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Going to ASU, a rival Pac-10 school, and the fact that we creamed Standford last week 41-3 that makes victory even sweeter to me.
- tito184, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Fellow Sundevil, I felt the same way.
- arrowoftime, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I just got back to the rally greeting the Stanford football team as they returned to campus around 12:30 AM tonight. Everyone's pretty excited.
- sherbertbones, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1I'm getting a vision...and UCB comes and takes it all...
Go BEARS! Down with Stanfurd! - Radicalex, on 10/28/2007, -1/+3Glad to see USC go down. The mood was pretty low at the UCLA vs. Notre Dame game today, but when we saw that USC had lost it made our loss a bit more bearable!
GO BRUINS! - kenvsryu, on 11/01/2007, -4/+3Pete Caroll sucks.
- one2gamble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Its amazing, its like once the PAC-10 gets two teams in the top 4 one crumbles under the pressure. Im just suprised it was USC this time.
- wallyf, on 11/01/2007, -1/+6USC has been overrated from the get go... AND their schedule is a bunch of cupcakes, 'nuff said
- Dragular, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Another big fact from this article: Jack Thompson used to be quarterback for Washington State!
... that name's too freaking common... - hay112, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2another victory for my team......BOOMER!
- lolcatkthxbye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The celebrations on campus were nuts...I haven't seen anything like this in years at Stanford. Check out these videos.
There was a bonfire in the main quad:

There was a rally for the players when they got back to campus:

- Jergens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It appears that you're either a Buckeye or a Spartans fan.
Sparty on.
- MaverickC17, on 10/14/2007, -5/+15Over hyped USC has a joke of a schedule every year. Put them in the SEC and we'll see how well they do.
- Twigleaf, on 10/14/2007, -0/+11That's Right ! SEC battles each other to death and ends up killing each other and knocking each other out of the race. Not to mention the SEC chammpionship game. Just look, LSU a few years ago, Florida last year, ( ALMOST ) Auburn one year, but didn't get the votes over Oklahoma ( Auburn fan here ). I truely believe college football the last 3 or 4 years has been dominated by the SEC. They just beat each other to a pulp in the process.
- Cerebron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1USC murdered Arkansas last year.
- sdbyrd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you're right. they also played when McFadden was still injured and didn't even have a real starting QB. after USC they won 10 in a row after their QB & McFadden came back. it's a shame that there are so many great teams in the SEC that teams like Ohio State & USC can dominate their own conference almost every year. on top of that, the two best SEC teams then have to play each other again in the conference championship game. talk about unfair....
- Twigleaf, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I don't believe it to be an upset as much as them being over-rated to begin with. The media has seemed super biased towards them ever since they won the Championship that year. I still believe they should have played Auburn instead of Oklahoma, although I think USC still would have won that year. But Oklahoma was just terribly over-rated that year too, I thought compared to who they played. Hopefully LSU, as much as I hate to say it and root for them, may end up winning the national championship. It will come down to LSU and Ohio State I think. Of course Ohio State will lay down and fold just like last year.
- kedohmen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I don't think OSU will fold like we did last year, these kids are reminding me of the '02 Buckeyes
- earlycj5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hafta agree with that kedohmen. Watching last nights game was painful for me. OSU's defense was just too good for Purdue.
- kedohmen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Too bad our offense decided to sit out the second half!
- sambapati87, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The game against Florida was a disaster, yes but I don't think we "laid down and folded". However, we did deserve to lose.
- sprinter9109, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1OSU won't lay down and fold, they didn't last year. This is the year of the Buckeye!
- sdbyrd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1OSU never gets tested my friend. Look at who OSU plays this year...what a joke! No wonder Florida had NO problem running all over the buckeyes last year. Funny how Florida said all but 1 or 2 SEC teams could have done the same.
- ookxtreme, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1KICK A$$!! WAY TO GO JIM!!
