Touchscreen BlackBerry "Thunder" Due by September
gizmodo.com — "The Wall Street Journal confirms all of the details unearthed a few days ago about BlackBerry's touchscreen Apple killah: Dubbed Thunder, it's only got four physical keys and it'll be exclusive to Verizon Wireless in the US and Vodafone abroad. "

- linagee, on 05/17/2008, -8/+6The very reason why I love blackberries is that they don't have a touchscreen. The touchscreen breaks, then what? No ability to make calls. No ability to receive calls. Then you have a very expensive brick.
- jeriqo, on 05/17/2008, -1/+8The green button breaks, then what?
- ozid, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3is that your best arguement? who doesn't warranty their high priced phones?
and besides that, its not like this is going to be some reinvention of touchscreens. its always the same or extremely similar technology so the chances of it breaking and it NOT being user error are slim at best. - thcobbs, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3The reason why I love my blackberry is the DAMNED GOOD qwerty keyboad that makes typing a breeze due to the tactile response.
This is just trying to copy an iPhone(which I hate the keyboard on as well).- blackinthmiddle, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2I haven't used the original iPhone extensively (never liked the original specs, so I wasn't going to buy one), but I was extremely impressed when surfing the web with it recently. For one, you're using a real safari browser, so pages render as they should. Zooming in and out and actually touching links (versus scrolling through 20 to get to the 21st one you wanted) makes surfing actually enjoyable. From the little that I used the virtual keyboard, you're right, it wasn't as easy as using a real keyboard, although you could probably get used to it. I'm getting the 3G version when it comes out.
- migitalwarfare, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Be sure to let RIM know that they've failed to reach the goal of designing a phone specifically for you, they might not laugh at you before hanging up.
- kikadet, on 05/17/2008, -5/+1I just lost the game.
- linagee, on 05/17/2008, -8/+6The very reason why I love blackberries is that they don't have a touchscreen. The touchscreen breaks, then what? No ability to make calls. No ability to receive calls. Then you have a very expensive brick.
- 1KrazyKorean, on 05/17/2008, -15/+62Hey kids another iphone killer =/. Granted i love blackberry and use mine with joy, but im kinda sick of every company trying to kill the iphone. IMO its going to be hard to beat a iphone.
- BlackKnight6, on 05/17/2008, -0/+19You would rather companies not try to surpass it? I like seeing companies trying to surpass each other, means better products get out when they do.
- migitalwarfare, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1they're not surpassing the iphone, they're copying it. since when has RIM been in the market of making knockoffs?
- virtualball, on 05/17/2008, -0/+10I think companies should be trying to compete with the iPhone, but I can't imagine BlackBerry doing it. People don't buy BlackBerry's for style and ease of use, the majority of people buy BlackBerry's for business. One just better hope that this touch screen BB doesn't sacrifice function for fashion...
- BlackKnight6, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Well if they can increase the style and ease of use as well as keep the features and function (or add even more) its win-win.
- thcobbs, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3Typing(the REAL reason for owning a blackberry) is going to be sacrificed due to a touch screen.
If its a pain in the ass to type on a blackberry, why get one?
- thcobbs, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3Typing(the REAL reason for owning a blackberry) is going to be sacrificed due to a touch screen.
- jeriqo, on 05/17/2008, -0/+5Business is compatible with ease of use. (remember time equals money?).
And style doesn't hurt anyone.
- BlackKnight6, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Well if they can increase the style and ease of use as well as keep the features and function (or add even more) its win-win.
- mk2ja, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Its called Capitalism. Competition among businesses leads to better products just the same as competition in the animal / plant kingdom leads to "survival of the fittest".
I think that the iPhone is a really great device (and I plan to get one this summer once I make some money), and I don't expect that this new BlackBerry is likely to be the "Apple Killer" RIM is hoping for, but I sure do want other companies to keep trying to beat Apple. It just leads to a greater push for better products, more innovations, more possibilities, and more options for all of us consumers.- hellotyler, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1If anyone can step up to the challenge, it's Blackberry. Competition is always good for the consumer.
- mrblonde314, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1And where would we be if other companies didn't come out with their "Macintosh killers"
- BlackKnight6, on 05/17/2008, -0/+19You would rather companies not try to surpass it? I like seeing companies trying to surpass each other, means better products get out when they do.
- lucidguru, on 05/17/2008, -3/+52What could kill this phone: "it'll be exclusive to Verizon Wireless."
I not sure about RIM's fanboy base, but it will clearly need to be unlocked to go anywhere near an "Apple killah." 3G EV-DO Rev. C as well as GSM HSPA are all very nice, however.- gn0stik, on 05/17/2008, -1/+4I know, I for one, do NOT welcome another crippled verizon phone that runs their ***** subscription gps apps. I don't understand why these phone manufacturers consistently cave to these ***** providers.
- groverblue, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1that does suck, but I bet that VZW has a lot to do with this, making RIM a very well compensated vendor. The reason I say that is because VZW bombed when they had a chance to get the iPhone, now they are scrabbling to make happy with those ppl that really want an iPhone. Since Apple & ATT are married for the next four years, and VZW is CDMA, there really is no incentive for those VZW customers to wanna stay. How do I know? Cause I'm one of them. VZW hardware fcking sucks anymore. This phone might just keep me with them. Then again, what the hell do I know?
- CannedCorn, on 05/18/2008, -1/+1Verizon is for poor people, when is everyone going to realize that AT&T runs ***** and that they always get the hot phones because GSM (hello people) is the world standard.
- gn0stik, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1uhh my bb is gsm capable... douche. vzw has had gsm phones for years.
- CannedCorn, on 05/18/2008, -1/+1Verizon is for poor people, when is everyone going to realize that AT&T runs ***** and that they always get the hot phones because GSM (hello people) is the world standard.
- RicardoWilliams, on 05/17/2008, -17/+10that phone is gonna be so badass
- artsyave, on 05/17/2008, -9/+33It's like all those MP3 players popping out after the ipod release. But ipod is still the more popular player. Same story with the iPhone. I love the blackberry, but it's little keyboard is a distinctive feature. They should try to get ride of it. Some people actually prefer the keyboard, you can type without looking at the keyboard by feel, unlike the iphone.
- Appleologist, on 05/17/2008, -1/+5Do you mean "They shouldn't try to get rid of it." (not "They should try to get ride of it")
- dig1x, on 05/17/2008, -1/+10Blackberry has a much larger marketshare than Apple's iphone. It has momentum in the form of its backend services.
Why this is being framed as a "iphone killah" is just for the purpose of the apple cheerleaders to being their derision of any competing product.
RIM doenst need to care about the iphone. - BlackKnight6, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Well not really, the iPhone does not have the kind of market share the iPod did with MP3 players. And the iPod beat the other players for a long time in features while iPhone lacks quite a few that other phones have that are important to many groups of people.
That is a good point about the physical keyboard. Maybe they should keep the 2 available, physical and touch versions.- jeriqo, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1The iPod never beat anyone in features, and that's fine.
- jabberwolf, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1That's where the Sony Xperia will take over !!
For function, keyboard, AND everything ipod can do and much more :P
- upick, on 05/17/2008, -19/+14ahahha iphone rip off for sure~!
- winmywii, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3That's not a pic of the final product.
- noots, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1i honestly expect it to be square and thin (very little rounded edges). Not sure why but i think that is the way RIM will go.
- DLindberg49, on 05/17/2008, -13/+13Love it!!! can't wait... I have been a long time Blackberry tech support for a large corporation and personal user as well and it has always had the security and longest experience of auto email push.. now taking the touch screen into it give the best device going... and when teamed up with Verizon's excellant customer service and true 3G speeds.... it just doesn't get any better!!!! Thanks for the news flash!
- InstantRamen, on 05/17/2008, -12/+7Gee Verizon is like Sprints little sister. Both evil..
- dha07030, on 05/17/2008, -0/+5Little?
- iofthestorm, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4More like big sister?
- InstantRamen, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3Umm which was here first ?
- gn0stik, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3Verizon (aka bell atlantic). Unless you think sprint was before Bell. They just changed the name of their wireless branch when they merged with GTE..
- wheelzr, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1PWNED
- jinjin, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3riiiiight because there's a cellphone company in the US that's NOT evil?
- wheelzr, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Verizon is nowhere near atrocity that is Sprint.
- bbrosemer, on 05/17/2008, -10/+19I don't think they get the concept...It's a screen....you don't need 4 buttons on the bottom of the device, when you could have screen instead...
- BlackKnight6, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Is that really a picture of it or someones guess based on info?
- excalpius, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Yes, it is from an article where the caption reads hypothetical photoshop mock-up guesstimate yada yada yada.
- blackjack75, on 05/17/2008, -0/+7A screen is nice because you can change the interface as you want but having physical buttons is still as must for me. I think the iPhone is harder to use as an mp3 player because once it's in your pocket the only thing you can acccess witthout your eyes is the volume. For anything else you have to take it out, hold it with one hand and click on it with another hand.
Having 4 buttons on the bottom, just like Palms had is a good thing in my book. They can be reasssigned rapidly depending on the application.- zzz@tkz, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1I can control my iPhone with one hand :|.
- LordBoreal51, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3I'm fairly sure that that is just a photoshopped Blackberry Bold with no keyboard.
- BlackKnight6, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Is that really a picture of it or someones guess based on info?
- blackjack75, on 05/17/2008, -12/+67Hm.. let's see, the iPhone is beautiful and simple. The Blackberry on the otherhand has a real keyboard which is better than a touchscreen.
So in order to beat the iPhone.. they remove the keyboard? Idiots.- Tinu, on 05/17/2008, -0/+12Didn't think of it that way but i guess you're right.
- franklymister, on 05/17/2008, -6/+7I have a Blackberry Pearl (work) and an iPhone (my own).
The Blackberry is great for its integration with my company's network, but after having both for months, I'd argue with the idea that its keyboard is "better."
I can type about twice as fast on the iPhone as on the Blackberry, and for a much longer time, because I'm not pressing physical buttons. I don't know if the Thunder will have a touchscreen that is as good as the iPhone, or predictive abilities that can keep up, but if it does, then I'd be happy to try it out. - blackjack75, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6Huh... I think the Pearl is a bad example. It has got that quirky keyboard with two letters per key. This kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a keyboard. I have played with one at work and I find it harder to type on this thing than on a good old phone with T9. I find the iPhone much better than the BB Pearl.
Real Blackberries (not the fruit) with a full keyboard are still easier to type on. I am looking forward to haptic screens so we can enjoy both the feedback and the nice onscreen interface.- damndj, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3I find myself typing faster on the Pearl than I did on my iPhone. Takes some time, but I think it's a better way of typing. Although I do miss the iPhones autocorrect since I found it to be the best out of any phone I've tried. Typing in unknown words on the Pearl can sometimes be troublesome.
I couldn't stand typing text messages on my iPhone. On the Blackberry? Not so much.
- damndj, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3I find myself typing faster on the Pearl than I did on my iPhone. Takes some time, but I think it's a better way of typing. Although I do miss the iPhones autocorrect since I found it to be the best out of any phone I've tried. Typing in unknown words on the Pearl can sometimes be troublesome.
- jeriqo, on 05/17/2008, -8/+2Keyboard being better than a touch screen is your opinion.
Minority opinion, actually. - God, on 05/17/2008, -0/+7I think they still going to maintain some models with keyboards. It doesn't hurt for a company to dabble in the latest trends.
- Chebsi, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Do you really think RIM would stop production on all of its other models...? With this unit, RIM is trying to appeal to the non-enterprise crowd. As for businesses, RIM already has a strong hold on them, and will continue to support and develop for that market.
- rc22nyrocket, on 05/17/2008, -3/+1well i think apple did something right by not having a keyboard.
- n0odles, on 05/17/2008, -5/+7Grosses.
- trigatch4, on 05/17/2008, -9/+50I don't see why removing the keyboard makes them idiots? They still have a HUGE product line WITH keyboards. If you WANT a keyboard get the BlackBerry Bold. If not, get the Thunder. Is offering your customers a variety such a bad thing? http://blackberrythunder.net
- damndj, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Well said.
- excalpius, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Agreed. It's a phone, not a religion. I for one hate AT&T so much I will look at the touchscreen blackberry VERY seriously. The trends are for larger screens to show media, so this is the way to go for the vast majority of the market place. If I can type as well on this new blackberry as I can with my iPod Touch, I'll be upgrading my 8700 to Thunder.
- franklymister, on 05/17/2008, -6/+22Why do companies keep feeling the need to make "iPhone killers" and "iPod killers?"
Stop playing catchup and lead for once.
Most of the time, they don't get it anyway. The iPhone is popular for its user experience - everything from the technical aspects of the multitouch screen and its integration with OS X to the little details in the UI. It's not just a matter of making a large screen, or making it pretty. Those things help, but they're not the answer by themselves.- dig1x, on 05/17/2008, -5/+7"Why do companies keep feeling the need to make "iPhone killers" and "iPod killers?" Stop playing catchup and lead for once."
Who's playing catch up? What are you talking about. The people framing this discussion as "anything" as the "apple-product killer" is ridiculous. There is a whole world of *leaders* that are better devices with better value in *EVERY* single product space that Apple operates.
Its persons like you who have this fairy tale "lead for once" idea.- franklymister, on 05/17/2008, -2/+4There's a reason you don't see news reports about people waiting overnight to get the latest Nokia or whatever. If you want to have the old "my feature list is longer than yours" argument, go ahead, but it misses the basic point.
User experience trumps feature lists. When products are more enjoyable to use, they become more popular.
For example, the Apple Newton was beautiful, but people just didn't enjoy using it as much as a Palm - so the blocky little Palm won.
When a phone with a better user experience comes out, then I'll point to that company as a leader. Just releasing devices that look vaguely iPhone-like isn't leadership.- oblique63, on 05/18/2008, -1/+2dont forget about having 'trendy' ad campaigns though, I'm sure those have a lot to do with getting mass amounts of people to wait overnight for a phone...
I mean, seriously, just to put it in perspective, I have yet to see a single blackberry commercial on tv over here... so I dont know, the whole user-experience thing is a factor for a lot of people Im sure, but that would mean nothing without apple having reminded them about the iphone's 'cool user-experience' every 15mins on tv... personally, that variable plays much too big a role in generating popularity to effectively compare which user-interface is 'better'... not to mention the fact that 'popularity' itself is a dubious barometer of quality...
- oblique63, on 05/18/2008, -1/+2dont forget about having 'trendy' ad campaigns though, I'm sure those have a lot to do with getting mass amounts of people to wait overnight for a phone...

- bravecoward, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1The companies dont say its an iphone killer its more the media branding it for them

- neil1492, on 05/17/2008, -4/+4The older phone making companies are now trying to catch up. It's a few years to late for most at this point though.
- ftw420, on 05/17/2008, -15/+9It funny how many companies want to try to beat a phone that absolutely sucks. The iPhone is all flash and no substance.
- jeriqo, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2"The iPhone is all flash and no substance."
That's a substantial comment. - damndj, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2The iPhone has some features that the Blackberry wish it has. The Blackberry has some features that the iPhone wish it has. Both are good phones and each target a specific market of users.
There's plenty of substance in the iPhone. It may not be 100% nutritional, but it tastes pretty good. - jinjin, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2agreed, the iphone barely works as a phone. it's a mighty expensive wifi mp3 player.
- 1platypus, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1I really do not know what your talking about. Its hard to find a bad review of the iPhone. BTW didn't Time give it invention of the year.

- mal1964, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1Yeah but its cute ugly.
- damndj, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1Not at all.
- winmywii, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4I think the Bold will do better than this with the current BB users. Most BB users love the full qwerty keyboard. This may help attract some new users though.
- linksus, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Humm, looks nice.. looking above, people mention the iPhone killer etc etc.. im yet to find someone with one in the uk? The Nokia N95 8gb seems more popular.
- macmelo, on 05/17/2008, -3/+4It's amazing that a company like RIM can be so narrow-minded...
You won't beat Apple until you take the game to a whole new level, and the first step in doing so is to NOT claim that you FINALLY have an iPhone killer, specially on the verge of significant changes to the iPhone itself...
Develop something NEW and then brag about it... - tehjarvis, on 05/17/2008, -5/+4They aren't trying to "kill" the iphone...they're making this for the same reason why Pepsi created 7up...they know it'll never take Sprite's market sharey, but they know they can put a dent in it.
- secrity, on 05/17/2008, -1/+47-Up was introduced in the 1920's. Sprite was introduced in 1961 and it wasn't very popular until the 1980's.

- Herolint, on 05/17/2008, -1/+9What's up with this "exclusive" crap?
I won't buy an iPhone because I don't want to use AT&T, and I don't want to use Verizon, so I guess I won't be buying this phone either. iPhone is the iPhone killer for me because they aren't open to all networks and now Thunder is the same.
Apple and RIM both suck.- mparker7410, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Welcome to the world of mobile phones!
- Bandit1000, on 05/18/2008, -1/+0Unlock the iphone!! Really easy these days...
- usingpond, on 05/17/2008, -1/+5How many "killers" have there been without any real success at "killing"? Just come up with your own idea, like Apple did. That will "kill" it.
- tucsonwc, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Exactly. RIM is NOT going to "kill" the iPhone. The iPhone has its own installed base now. And is moving to its second generation in another month. More to the point, the RIM product will not be running OS X, so it can't kill something that is different.
- damndj, on 05/17/2008, -0/+9RIM makes great phones and Apple makes a great phone. Both have good market share, so there's gonna be no "killing". There's nothing to kill.
- Typhoon2009, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2I don't have any statistics but I'd be certain that RIM has a bigger market share for its target audience: businessmen.
- lohphat, on 05/17/2008, -1/+8People need to get a life and be tribal marketing tools for the phone vendors.
IT'S JUST A PHONE YOU IDIOTS.

- lohphat, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Whoops! "not be"
- Anomaly100, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1It sounds nice. I mean they made the Blackberry even better. It really does everything already.
- pintomp3, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3RIM has been targetting the consumer market and doing a good job. the pearl and the curve have been immensely popular. i see a lot of people switching from sidekicks to blackberrys. i don't know if this is targetted as an iphone alternative, but they don't really need to compete with the iphone. they have a larger marketshare and are very entrenched in businesses. more choices FTW.
- deltron, on 05/17/2008, -1/+8Exclusive to VERIZON? Come on now, RIM... what are you thinking?
- Kidtuf, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2I guess I shouldn't expect too much from T-mobile on the hardware side of things, but we need some friggin handsets over here!
The hottest phone we have is the blackberry curve...or if you're a masochist there's always a couple HTC phones.
- Kidtuf, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2I guess I shouldn't expect too much from T-mobile on the hardware side of things, but we need some friggin handsets over here!
- iplayyouandme, on 05/17/2008, -2/+9The iPhone is a game changer in just about every way that counts. Yes, there were touch phones before the iPhone and many more after, BUT not Multi-Touch (gesture), with a Proximity Sensor and an Accelerometer (think Nintendo Wii), with 300 patents to protect it from also-ran phones from Nokia and others. Above all a modern OS (OS X) with a REAL web browser and Wi-Fi to boot.
Oh, yeah all those eMail features will be coming with iPhone 2.0 on June 9th.
The BlackBerry is a one trick pony - eMail. The iPhone is a video iPod, a multi-touchscreen phone, and a computer.- excalpius, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Those 300 patents mean bupkis, because the things that really matter in your list are all examples of prior inventions and prior art. Nothing's going to stop anyone from cloning everything in an iPhone except the art for the interface icons...which no one cares about cloning.
- phatfiend, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1hahah did you just call the iphone a computer? whats this? i can only run one process at a time? "my apocalyptic apple fanboyism has been dispelled!!!!!!!!"
- dunderballer, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3I love this quote from the origional Gizmodo article: "What the people want these days are touchscreens, beautiful, difficult to use touchscreens. And that's just what RIM is going to deliver with the BlackBerry Thunder."
- dmcbride6, on 05/17/2008, -5/+3Groundbreaking design! Oh wait...Apple came out with that a year ago.
- AppleGeorge, on 05/17/2008, -4/+1Why is it so ugly? It looks like a little kids toy phone, and those buttons on the front make it look really cheap.

- TylerKirk, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1why wouldn't you link to the original story of the website that first broke this?

- chiptricky, on 05/17/2008, -0/+5Verizon Wirless Only!? RIM - You've always been so good to us. why now?
- droth1981, on 05/17/2008, -2/+0I hope everyone realizes this image is photoshopped by boygenius (www.boygeniusreport.com) who is the source of every bit of info on blackberry that comes out before research in motion releases it. Nokia sells about a million phones a day and these two companies are worried about who's killing who? no matter what they're all losing to Nokia and it's only gonna get worse as Nokia's CEO stated their goal of raising their portion of US cell phone market from 10% to 20%. considering they already own 40% of the world market i say "good luck RIMM and Apple". (for the record, i happen to be a happy blackberry 8310 user)
- HanSolo69, on 05/17/2008, -4/+1WTF is Gizmodo doing talking about technology news and gadgets?
- scaaven2, on 05/17/2008, -2/+1Wow! what an original concept!!!
- MasterThief117, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Why can't they also have this for Sprint? Verizon loves to toy with the phone's capabilities, ultimately hindering the performance by a lot.
Sprint does not toy with the phone's interface and functionality, however they do enjoy toying with their customers.
Also, I am stuck with Sprint for a while and have been hoping for a cool new phone, but they always seem to be sucked up by other carriers.- itsontheway, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Sprints not doing so well lately ... yeah they suck, but since they´ve been losing customers left and right, they are more lenient, don´t cap data, and have fairly good rates for phone/internet. Customer service in store blows, though, as does their tech support. You need a special number to get real help, if needed. I guess going to Verizon first would be more lucrative as they have been gaining customers ... sadly.
- itsontheway, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3Down with this exclusive BS. I do realize all of the cell companies are evil in the states, but some aren´t as bad as others. Verizon -- I used to work for those assholes. I was unemployed two weeks after starting because I just couldnt lie to consumers and tell them they could not install software on a device they owned, but would instead have to purchase their lame excuse for programs via verizon. All of their deals were a bunch of bs, and the phones that they sold were crippled, pieces of *****.
When will they free our these dang things and let us them like any other piece of equipment. I don´t care about paying the full price. I´ll do it, just to not have to sign a contract with At&T or Verizon.
Heres to hoping the 700mhz auction may solve something ... not. -
