BIGGEST FREE MMORPG LIST EVER
wiki4mmo.com — You heard me and it's a wiki so add some more!
- 1036 diggs
- digg it
- Marquisk2, on 10/12/2007, -23/+2I'm kidding it may not be the biggest but it's a nice list anyways.
- tunacubes, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5Thank you for not putting Runescape on there. If you had, I would've lost all faith in Digg and it's frontpaged articles.
- Dantetheinferno, on 10/12/2007, -9/+76It's a nice list...
FOR ME TO POOP ON - Sarevok9, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16most of em are pretty lame IMO.
as far as free mmo's go theres VERY little out there....
if your a korean native you can play RF online, and thats a pretty good one (the US / Uk version is pretty bad).
Rapplez is fun to look at and the pet system is pretty cool, but it has a LOT of issues.... memory leak among those issues.
Maplestory is okay if your around 12 years old.
Gunz is a pretty good time waster, and if it weren't the EASIEST game to hack, it would still be fun for everyone.
Hero is the biggest free 3d mmorpg that i've come across (as far as community goes)
aside from that, i dont think much of ANYTHING free is worth playing, correct me if i'm wrong. - Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8OK.. first of all the first one on that list is NOT free. (I downloaded it last week you can play free for a month, then it costs money-- 13.95 per month) If the first one isn't, i'm sure there are many more that aren't as well.
Second, most of these "free" mmorpg's have "tokens" that you can buy with real money to buy stuff in game (e.g. second life).. and they really prevent you from doing anything fun without buying some.
Lastly... if it really is free... it's very hard to find one that is worth your time. I haven't found one that is good yet.
www.mmorpg.com also has a good list with user ratings that goes into better detail on the specific costs and the true free games. - Hayaemsay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6$5 Says RuneScape has been removed, multiple times...
- NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well I certainly didn't know about Oz, or scions of fate, both look interesting.
*dugg for introducing me to a few MMOs that I actually haven't heard off! x3 - No1nose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think http://www.gameogre.com/ has a good "free" list, too. It is much less polished that MMORPG.com, but still has user reviews and comments. Free usually just means there is a cash shop and you need to use real $$ to buy in-game items.
- psychoselya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@sarevok9 & jrr6415sun
The Kingdom of Loathing, while falling prey to the "token" concept that jrr mentioned, is ***** hilarious and lots of fun without donating. - lonewalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jrr6415sun
ATITD is a nice game, its very different form other mmorpgs, more on player co-op community work, but its not actually free. I sort of miss playing it
- simcjt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1not a bad list might actually try some of these out
- MrSidnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Worst Title Ever. Well almost. I've seen some real retarded titles out there. Like that kid begging money for WoW...
- Bladeva, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Its big alright.
- albi123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31This one is a good list as well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free_MMORPGs
- Bladeva, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4I recommend.
http://tale-of-tales.com/TheEndlessForest/index.html- Sarevok9, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4wow.... non-violent, no plot line..... oh its just like babmi.
buried.
- Sarevok9, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4wow.... non-violent, no plot line..... oh its just like babmi.
- Groovester, on 10/12/2007, -19/+8Runescape is the biggest Free MMO out there, how is that missing from the list?
- h4mx0r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+46Because it is a disgrace to mankind.
- tunacubes, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39Seriously, Runescape is the worst game ever.
- modelcadet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Once upon a time, I played Runescape. The game itself isn't *that* bad... ok, it's pretty bad...
But the one thing I've observed is that the true failure of the game has been an increasingly horrible community. Of course, many things contribute to this, but I remember once upon a time (years and years ago) the community was vibrant, people actually role played (something that never seems to happen in MMORPGs anymore), etc. - tunacubes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@modelcadet
One of the biggest flaws in the game is that since it's free, 95% of the community is kids 13 and under who say the word "nub" and don't even know that what the hell the term "noob" is actually supposed to be used for (in RS, they use the term to describe: Anyone a lower level than them, anyone higher than them, anyone who plays the game that isn't using the same username as them (eg. everyone other than themself) The true irony of the situation is that anyone who likes the game Runescape is a noob at life.)
So yeah. It sucks a lot more than it would have if the older players still played, and didn't quit and start playing WoW and GW. Hell, even Starwars Galaxies was better. - Hayaemsay, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I play RuneScape. Now watch as I am dugg down by ignorance.
The P2P part of the community is actually a lot better than F2P and I will still play regardless of what you say. Just stop and think; 'why do I care'? - Llanowar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@Hayaemsay
Don't make me laugh. P2P is just as bad, they think because they are members that they own runescape and are therefor better than anyone. Been p2p member myself as well. I have noticed how arrogant those people generally are.
And runescape is a fun game. Very regular new content. Lots of worlds. Not too many bugs. Loads of skills. etc...
It is the community that makes it so bad. Nobody seems to respect each other. No matter what level you are, or how you behave. You're easily called noob 50 times as soon as you log in.
There is loads of begging, scamming, leetspeak, etc.
They should implement things into the game that you get certain benefits for helping out fellow players. This would greatly improve the community. But they would have a long way to go before becoming a respected game again. - Hayaemsay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@llanowar
That is an exaggeration and Jagex aren't into the whole co-op thing. Some people will always be jerks and the digg community can be just as bad. - tunacubes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@Hayaemsay
I agree with Llanowar. I, on the other hand, am more of a prick about it.
I have tried Runescape, back in the days before I wanted to pay for an MMO. I hated the community. The gameplay is good, for a free Java-based game, but the people and community make it suck. I felt like I was surrounded by a gang of prepubescent kids who sit around and think Runescape is the coolest game ever and think they’re awesome for playing it. (An off-topic point is that all the kids think they're 1337) I then moved on to Starwars Galaxies. When that got boring, I went to RS again and became a member. The member world was even worse. Everyone thinks they're awesome because they can pay $5.00 a month. Everyone calls each other a noob, constantly. It doesn't matter what level you are, you WILL be called a noob because everyone just thinks it's just an insult.
When you go to games such as WoW, I have never been called noob in the game. I have called myself a noob, and others do the same to theirself, joking around. WoW is full of older and more mature people who like to joke around with each other. Runescape is full of little kids who are obsessed with calling people "nubs". The WoW community has beggers, such as all games, but the Runescape community has about 10 times as many beggers. WoW has 8,000,000+ active users, and Runescape has probably less than 200,000. The fact that out of 200,000 people, they have more beggers than a game with 8,000,000 users is just pathetic. Scammers are also a big thing in Runescape. How often do you see people in WoW saying, "if u want to dupe ur run3 sw0rd, change ur pass to 'runesw0rdz' and sign off for an hour or 2 LoL!!!1"
Now, i'm prepared to get buried because all you little bastards who play Runescape will tell all your RS buddys to bury me for being a "nub", but that had to be said. - Adma1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@tunacubes
I didn't bury you because I'm an RS fan... never played the game, I buried you for saying the wow community is in any sense of the word "mature". - tunacubes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@adma
Go play RS for a day. You'll see what I mean. I meant "Mature" as, not constantly making fun of each other, and PHYSICALLY mature (read: not prepubescent)
- herbanlegend, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Free doesn't equate to a good game.
It is free for a reason. - Gallifrey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The list at http://play-free-online-games.com/ is much, much bigger.
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There are better lists out there. Actually they're websites with a database. You can search for the genre, language, beta/final release, 2D/3D, browsergame/stand-alone... much better than going through an ASCII-text list.
- tunacubes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3You can search for 2D/3D, beta, and Keywords on the site posted.. it's called Ctrl F
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3For example:
http://gamelist.mmosite.com/ vs your Ctrl-F - tunacubes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Our oldskool CTRL F method owns that site's ass.
- Accutron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5How many of these games are actually worth downloading? I'm curious. I tried Anarchy Online a few years ago and it was terrible. I was actually glad when my account was mysteriously deleted.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6WoW and Guild Wars. Some also apparently find EVE Online and Star Wars Galaxies enjoyable, but I'll never know how.
What? Oh, *free*!
Well, GW is free to _play_, but other than that your best bet is to enter one of the public betas, like Lord Of The Rings Online - at least if you're in the US. If you're not in the US ou're pretty much out of luck for free, decent, MMORPGs.
I guess you could search for free 10 day demos, I believe both WoW and GW have those, at least from time to time, and EVE Online definitely does. - violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Knight Online has quality PvP. If that's not what you're looking for, avoid it.
- overbored454, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Junkyarddawg
EVE Online is a very good game to play if you are a fan of sci-fi and space travel and such. I played it for several months. It's also popular because the average age of player is over 20.
But since City of Heroes is better than all others anyway ... - Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As an old sci-fi gamer, I respectfully have to disagree. EVE reminded me of Elite II: Frontier, with the main difference being that I didn't have to do anything but click the enemy and then watch the auto-combat. To me, that was extremely unsatisfying, but I am aware that others do like it, presumably for the social and trading aspects.
City of Heroes I've not tried. I've heard a lot of good things about it, but comics and superheroes is not really my thing.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6WoW and Guild Wars. Some also apparently find EVE Online and Star Wars Galaxies enjoyable, but I'll never know how.
- Okari, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The only mmorpg I ever played was Secrets of Mirage. It's still in beta so it's a nice somewhat small community. It has the look of the 16 bit Final Fantasies.
http://www.secretsofmirage.com
Other than that, I always found mmo's boring.- Stuntaneous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that looks a lot like the old Odyssey Online engine, that was awesome back in its day.
- Stuntaneous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i recommend Aranock, its engine has been around for some time and its accumulated a huge following brancing off into many different communities and servers.. which surely merits the game.
- vsujohn2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4At first I thought the website was wiki4emo :P
- select, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4I recommend elephant mud!
telnet elephant.org - christophersisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13BIGGEST 500 INTERNAL SERVER ERROR EVER
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Don't aim for "biggest", aim for covering what you feel is the good ones. :-/
Because the problem with free online MMO's is that they're of so varying quality, not that it's hard to find them. - Calculon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Everyone should check out DaysOfWar. Its a pretty fun/easy FREE MMO thats all web based (and mostly text) and based in an alternate WWII ending where the ABomb fails and the war drags on..... You get so many turns a day to build attack/defense/stealth. Plus the #1 person wins a PSP, a DS, or 250$. We could get a digg.com alliance together and take turns winning it!
Join Calculon!
http://www.daysofwar.com/dw/recruiting.asp?unique_id=ivjsjagp - iMoth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2in soviet russia, rpg massively multiplays you!
- yaosio, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2If an infinite number of monkeys listed an infinite number of MMORPGs there would be a 0 in 99999999999999999999999999999999 chance that one of those MMORPGs is good.
- djspanky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Rappelz is a lot of fun. I have been playing for a few weeks and I enjoy it. I will probably try a few of these just to see if there are better ones out there.
- v0id, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2logged in just to digg you up. I really like rappelz as well, are you on yeti server?
- alexforcefive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2+1 for making precisely the comment I was about to post =D
Rappelz is good, although the US development team are a bunch of arses and the cash shop is wayyyyyy overpriced. However, unlike a lot of "free" games you don't NEED to spend money at the cash shop to get anywhere in the game - fuckingusername, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Rappelz has very laggy severs, the game runs like crap, Oblivion runs better with 10 times the candy. The game is so limited their is not enough to do besides just kill 10 different kind of monsters, the layout I thought was bad. Card system ect, was a pain.
I just play guild wars, due to no pay to play.
but UO was the best rpg I have played, but pay to play = is a joke.
- p2502, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The list is crap as it's been pointed out. a good portion of these games don't even come close to being free. Or are over run with the kind of human waste, that makes it impossible to draw any enjoyment from playing.
also where the hell is Kingdom of Loathing?- psychoselya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2KoL FTMFW!
- OrphanedOrphan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you want to try out a free old-school mmorpg try Ultima Online. It's fun, and there are many free shards out there. I'd recommend http://www.abcuo.com/ Its been around for some 3 odd years, playerbase averages 80-100 (used to be 300+). Its all free, just follow the "links/download" link on the front page and you are all set.
- Seifey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10http://www.eo.dreamhosters.com/screenshots/shot2.jpg
Best graphics... ever.- Hillazon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that looks oddly familiar is that a freeware game that comes with Ubuntu?
- bulkr99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great time waster. Wish I had enough spare minutes to try them all.
- LaSepultura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Dragons is pretty fun.
If you like golf and anime, I can't recommend Albatross18 enough. It's kinda like Hot Shots golf it was an MMO. Alot of fun. - tunacubes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@*****
"but pay to play = is a joke."
Go try a free trial of a P2P game. Just because you can't afford it doesn't mean it's a joke, it means it's better than the free crap you play.
You're an RS junkie, aren't you. - Narvien, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Dugg for Space Cowboy Online. Great community, and it's unlike any MMORPG I've ever played. No, it's not perfect, but hey, show me a game that is. So...how many of you who are saying these are crap because you don't have to pay for them use Firefox? (Yes, I realize there's a difference between free and open source, just attempting to make a point.)
Oh snap, I tried to make a point on Digg! Bury me! - Bonzodog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Planeshift anyone?
http://www.planeshift.it
It looks quite good, and has a growing community, and is totally cross platform (windows, linux, and Mac) - diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've played a few of these games, and Eternal Lands was the best one. I'm going to give 9Dragons a try though, looks decent.
- OropheR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My time has been sucked in for more than 2 years by Evolution. Web browser based game with sexy creatures sent into space to grab your lands... Sounds silly, but once in, its fun.
http://evolution.neondragon.net - Wytefang, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Too bad all of these MMOs suck @$$. The whole genre is moribund and boring, for that matter. Dugg down for supporting a sh*tty genre.
- Megatog615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2NEEDS MORE CAPSLOCK
- fookhar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If it's in caps it must be true.
- Zerobabii, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Great job on your list! I'm sure i can find something on there ;)
- NGliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm currently addicted to Conquer Online, really good game if you give it a chance.. once you get to know your servers community it makes it worth playing ^^
- PaperJesus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0All the free mmorpg's suck. I have played a lot of them and have found them all to have problems, mostly with crappy servers or just horrible game play. I tend to hate mmorpg's because they're all boring. I tried guild wars and it was better than all the free ones, but it was still terrible. I have tried //()// and I don't know why people get addicted to it. I especially hate doing quests, you can never find what you're looking for. I warn you to stay away from these mmorpg's if you hate long games like these. Just stick to online fps if you hate having to wait a lot.
- cortez_a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sites Down, dugg mirror caught it though. http://duggmirror.com/gaming_news/BIGGEST_FREE_MMORPG_LIST_EVER/
- themutt22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A good private KRO server is where its at. Its quite for for a while, especially since there can be so much customization. You can mod, sprite, and script your own server if you have the skills. Its questionably legal but... its legal enough that no one cares I suppose. There are servers with hundreds of players on at one time.
- parkieus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google FlyFF
Fly For Free.
amazing FREE mmorpg. - scotthealey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not to be nit-picky but quickly browsing through some of those titles i wonder just how "Massive" those MMORPG really are. Many seem to be more along the lines of MORPG's. One of the characteristics that draw me to this genre is how dynamic the community/environment can be and without a large enough population the appeal can quickly lessen if not die off completely.
- scotthealey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its great to share a listing of free MMORPG but I also think it is important to note that many "free" mmorpg require you to pay money to gain access to certain aspects of the game or for special items. And, due to the addicting nature of these types of games they can end up being quite the large money sink pit if you are not careful.
- HmmWhatsThat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0You guys are retards!!!!!! its says the LIST is free not the games!!!!!!!!!!! omg!!!!
- arenaofz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0It sucks, just like a creator
- draconus, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1http://mmolist.blogspot.com is much better then this
- erhanaltay, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1http://mmohub.org is a more comprehensive list IMHO.
Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
