E308: Things We Don't Ever Want To See At E3 Again. Ever.
kotaku.com — E3 was a disappointment. But you knew that already. Yet do you know why it was a disappointment? Sure, there are the easy answers. Few new game announcements. Anything Nintendo said or did. But they ’re just that. Easy answers. There were a lot more things wrong with the show than just those limelight-grabbers. Things that we never want to see at E3

- willynilly, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Gee, what a suprise. This convention was canceled years ago. Did you not get the news? Let it go: This new one is simply a lame attempt to dupe a few people with the name.
- dandonia, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1I just got finished watching all the Gametrailers best of E3 awards - Gametrailers you know the site that did comparison video's with the PS3 on low settings to make it fairer for 360s (lol). Here are the results.
Best Online = Resistance 2 (PS3)
Best FPS = Resistance 2(PS3)
Most Innovated Game = Little Big Planet(PS3
Best Graphics = Killzone 2(PS3)
Best Driving = Pure (multiplatform)
Best Stratergy = Endwar (multiplatform)
Best Action Adventure = Prince Of Persia (multiplatform)
One To Watch = Bayonetta (multiplatform)
Best New Franchise = Mirrors Edge (multiplatform)
Best Puzzle = Da Blob (wii)
----
If you watch the videos the PS3 had far more games in their than the 360 and Wii - I don't get why people are so down on Sony over their showing at E3. Of the 10 awards listed - PS3 gets 9 and the 360 gets 5.
----
Any 360 exclusives on that list? MS won best presentation guess why - because people on the 360 can now play a PS3 game too.
- blackrave, on 07/22/2008, -17/+6It wasn't too bad, but it seems to get worse every year.

- chaosblade77, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1There are other shows that are better than E3 now (and still get better each year). No point in it going back, we already have replacements.
Yeah, E3 has it's nostalgia value and it's history, but there is almost no chance of it returning to it's former glory. Just put it out of it's misery.- dandonia, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1If developers would keep their traps shut in the months leading up to E3 everything would be cool again. Lets face it - IGN had a preview of 90% of the games on show a week before the event.
----
We have had more gaming news in the last month than the 3 months leading up. The PS3 had a great outing , the 360 not so bad and the wii was meh who cares.
- dandonia, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1If developers would keep their traps shut in the months leading up to E3 everything would be cool again. Lets face it - IGN had a preview of 90% of the games on show a week before the event.
- Niallgriff, on 07/23/2008, -1/+7It's not a "worst of E3 opinion" until SeanBaby gets a hold of it (whatever dietey) Bless his soulesss PUNK ROCK ASS!!!!!
- NeonDistraction, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Is he still doing that? The last time I checked his website it hadn't been updated in like 2 years.
- scoottie, on 07/23/2008, -2/+10They will die like Comdex. E3 stopped letting small companies and some resourceful consumers into the show and will die a horrible death. I can't understand the thought process behind alienating the consumer. They could have done a second smaller show and kept the old E3 instead of killing it off like this.
But at least someone is trying to get the old ways back :
http://www.eforallexpo.com/ - ghostlywind, on 07/23/2008, -4/+37Bring back booth babes and tell the Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo they can only talk about games at their conferences and it will be better again
- damian7, on 07/23/2008, -5/+28E3 happened already?
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 07/23/2008, -5/+2Are you trying to be snarky or something? E3 was a month late this year. The real E3 always took place around the end of May.
- TheInimitable, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9SNARK LEVELS ARE OFF THE SCALE, SIR!
- Tebixan, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4I actually didn't know E3 was going on until people started freaking out online about FF13 coming to the 360
So I went over to G4 and watched some reruns of the footage they got of E3, and I can see why many didn't follow it this year. We already knew Gears 2, Fable 2, Fallout 2, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, and Far Cry 2 were coming out (thats a lot of sequels). Pretty much everything else was a gimmick.
- dashdingo, on 07/23/2008, -2/+56I remember when E3 was a celebrated event. Now it's one of those, "oh, let's see how bad they can ***** it up THIS year" things.
- 6shot, on 07/23/2008, -8/+6Dugg for not wanting Killzone 2 at the next E3.
Heres to Killzone 2 not be delayed again. - dagamer34, on 07/23/2008, -7/+2Here's how E3 SHOULD have been fixed:
Sunday - Tuesday: E3 for industry personnel. Let companies conduct close-door sessions. No fans allowed. Booth babes allowed.
Wednesday - Friday: E3 for fans. Let people off the street play a few games. Get feedback from people who will ACTUALLY be buying the games. Booth babes not allowed (people might touch, they aren't Nintendo DS's!).
These changes would fix E3 and all would be great, but now it's just complete trash. The current format doesn't allow for epic surprises like Twilight Princess in 2004. They just talk on stage about the money they've already made (Nintendo and Wii's STILL not meeting demand), the money they'll probably make (Microsoft w/FFXIII announcement), and the money they'll never make (Sony and it's lackluster conference)- phrenzy, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0You hit the nail on the head my friend.
There is a show that pretty much does what you're talking about: TGS.
- phrenzy, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0You hit the nail on the head my friend.
- SaladCactusKing, on 07/23/2008, -2/+19I don't want to see E3 again. There were good times, but now it's old and diseased. Time to take it behind the barn and Old Yeller it.
- MrTito, on 07/23/2008, -2/+3Following E3 used to be so exciting. But today, I think it has a lot to do with the growth of the culture that E3 targets. That, and info is so much more prevalent than it was 10 years ago. Video, pics, blogs, and just so many angles on the event that it's just easier to know what's going on. It's not a "must" to attend for the average guy. And, the growth is so large that niche expos have come into more prominence, like Macworld and PAX. I dunno, but it used to be fun back in the day to wait for every drop of information in June or July. Now, that information just rolls in all year long.
- Tebixan, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I think part of it is the shift of the entire in dusty toward more casual gaming. It's a race right now to see who can get Grandma to play their system. Since casual gamers are not going to follow E3, they treat it more like a big press conference than an entertainment expo.
We all thought when gaming went mainstream, our gaming experience would improve. It's starting to look more like we're facing the same fate as the music and film industries. Big business waters everything down to cater to the masses, and the enthusiasts have to dig deep into their niche to find quality stuff.- MrTito, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1True, and you laid out the point better than I did about the growth of that culture. There's a lot people who also grew up around video games that are considered casual gamers now, like myself. As I said, I used to love doses of info out of E3, it was like crack. (Especially around '95 to '97 when I was big into the Ultima series and that period was the Ultima IX and UO era.)
But, yeah, now Grandma's a gamer. What the hell? It's expected that as a culture matures that the values will change. Yet it has jumped out of the typical demographics and that's scary. I think if the big businesses do water down their offerings, there will still be a large portion of the consumer base that will reward innovative games, such as Spore. It just a matter of hoping that some companies keep a certain amount of integrity to look past profit margins in order to produce great content.

- KingFog, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Be glad you lot over the pond in America haven't experienced her "unique" (read as crap) singing voice...
And aye, E3 used to be great... Then they took away Booth Babes, and it died...
- KingFog, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Be glad you lot over the pond in America haven't experienced her "unique" (read as crap) singing voice...
- diblasio, on 07/23/2008, -1/+10I don't understand. I mean, was there ANYONE who didn't roll their eyes when they announced there were going to reformat E3 a while back? We all saw this coming. They ought to have just done away with it if they didn't want a conference that was going to build hype and make me want to buy ***** that I don't really need.
- mwalker05, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2as a child, I had always dreamed of one day attending E3. now that I would actually be able to do it, i just dont have the will.
- axisdelasal, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3E3 didn't have surprises because developers had been spreading trailers and rumors of upcomings games through Youtube and there is nothing impressive or new to see. Also when 90% of games are first person shooters it can be a little repetitive. The Wii is trying to be kid/family console with the only purpose of selling more and the Xbox 360 and PS3 are only appealing for adolescents and hardcore adult gamers by making tons of FPS but forgetting other type of games.
- Tebixan, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2I thought it was pretty funny when the Nintendo guy tried to pass off Animal Crossing as the hardcore game for the Wii. They should have just skipped E3, their new target consumer doesn't pay attention to video game expo's. I'm very dissapointed with my Wii and probably won't buy any more Nintendo products because of this.
You're right about there being no surpirses, I'm still pretty psyched about the xbox line up though. Gears 2, Fable 2, FF13, Force Unleashed, and Resident Evil 5. Only 1 FPS in that bunch so I don't know what you're talking about when you say they only showed FPSs- bagboyrebel, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2It's because hating FPSs is now what the cool nonconformist gamers do.
- chaosblade77, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1Nonconformists are a part of it, but I know there are people who just don't care that much about FPS games. I've grown up gaming (lightly gaming, owning 10 games or so per console at most) and never really got into FPS games when they became really popular. I can play them and enjoy them, but they aren't anywhere near my favorite genre.
E3 didn't have nearly as many FPS games as it did adventure and RPG games, but the shooters got a lot of the spotlight considering how few of them there actually were, both first and third person.

Nuff said. - djabad87, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0It's ok. RAYMAN will be an awesome gaming experience.
- Zantive, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4It sucked because Microsoft postponed Bungie's game announcement.
- snareguy17, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4"You’re grown men/women, and that’s how we see you, and expect you to act. Anything otherwise will only generate suspicion. Unless you’re The Cliffster. Then you get a pass."
I completely agree with this. - DuffyDirect, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2I thought wii music on stage was pretty cool... I also find it hilarious how scathing this article is, it's obviously just jumping on sky-is-falling bandwagon that's all over the place online. Kotaku's senior editor/webmaster/whatever was on live with the xplay guy on g4 after the nintendo showing and his response was not nearly as "OMG SUXORS!!!" as this
- darkchild82, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4If they want to make money, go the Leipzig or Tokyo Games Show route. Open it up to the public. But share the ticket revenue with the members like EA, Ubisoft and the other companies so they won't complain over the expenses of setting up massive booths and hiring models. Make it a 4 day event, two days exclusive to the press and then open it up to the public. Monday kicks off with Microsoft's press conference, Tuesday, after the other two press conferences, the expo is open to the press.Thursday and Friday, gates open to the public. But unlike the EforAll expo, don't charge freakin' $100 as entry! For Tokyo Games Show, the entry fee is just $10-12.
Oh, and keep it May so that Leipzig has some relevance! - phrenzy, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1LMAO - E3, still dying of its self inflicted wound. That's what trying to cater to the suits gets you. I guess nobody told the ***** at the ESA that there's already something called GD ***** C which does exactly what they are trying to accomplish with the "new" E3.
E3 is supposed to be a "show" not a conference. Countdown until the ESA president gets bounced out on his ass. lol.
You KNOW it's bad when Riccitiello from EA is saying it is too "dry and business like"
Unfortunately, "E for All" appears to be a pretty amateur operation. We need somebody to organize a US equivalent to TGS.- chaosblade77, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1E for All is still new, last year was the first show. I'd give it some time before calling it off, it could definitely take off and get big.
- NeonDistraction, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Dugg for their choice of picture to headline the article. It made the article seem funnier than it was, since the whole time I was reading it, I imagined it being said by those guys.
- arjie, on 07/23/2008, -1/+11E308? How did I miss numbers 4 through 307‽
- FLarsen, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Interrobang ftw.
- Azriel7, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2They either need to go back to the old E3 with booth babes, Actual NEW Game demo's to play (NOT CGI TRAILERS!!!), and all the craziness, or they just need to close it down all together. Trying to compromise is what got us in this mess in the first place, it's an all or nothing deal.

- davidkeithjones, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2E3 is fine, it just turned into a professionals event. Kotaku just wants a spectacle so they don't have to perform actual journalism and interview people.
- exomni, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I thought the same thing about Duffy, but then saw her on magazines everywhere and learned she has a ridiculously big selling album. Microsoft is just ahead of the curve. It would be like if they got Amy Winehouse to play E32005, just before she was well known.
I thought it was a fantastic way of introducing the Lips game, even if I don't like her music, or don't think she's talented. - Grikkith, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1One word: Reginator.
- boner79, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1How about game developer's spending all their time talking about how their whiz-bang physics engine is better than the next guy's rather than the actual gameplay. Who gives a ***** how realistic a table looks as it is blown into bits when your f'ing game is absolute crap. Yeah but it's realistic looking crap.
