Get off the tubes.
- robdiggity, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Sweet Bastard, that was me and my friends Brian, Ted and Tom rockin out in 1988.
Oh, and "YOU WIN!" - Spaceomega, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Fun, it does look. I won't mind spending $200 on the bundle.
- leffunov, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I had no interest in this game before I saw this. Now I can say this game rocks!
- OGTL, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I think it looks ***** retarded.. get real instruments and do something productive.
- fino35, on 10/11/2007, -1/+130Not to rain on the parade but I just saw this in the joystiq comments:
Hey all
This video was taken from a conference where attendees are generally encouraged to be casual and show off the new stuff they are working on privately. Unfortunately, an attendee broke the conference rules and videotaped the talk. The footage was made from an old build of the game quite some time ago for internal purposes- basically to get people working on the game excited. The song was one we have considered for the game but haven’t locked down, and you may have noticed that the footage was made so long ago that the people in the video are playing old instruments and prototypes. I guess what I am saying is- this isn’t official and doesn’t really reflect the final game at all. We’ll be releasing a lot of info next week from much newer builds of the game with finalized songs.
Rock,
Sean
thats from harmonix- MrTankJump, on 10/11/2007, -3/+45Well, if thats just a prototype, imagine how kickass the final game is going to be.
- Timmyftw, on 10/11/2007, -2/+35My erection has an erection.
- Caleb83, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Oh great! I thought something was weird when I didn't see the 10 fret guitar. I guess there's a logical explanation though. This game is going to rule the school.
- jetfuel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I hardly doubt this is going to hurt them in any way. Harmonix, if you are reading this, RELEASE MORE!! The only way I'm paying $200 on this game is if it looks fun as hell and this is a good start.
- coltrane68, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9My wifey and I just watched that - we cannot wait for this game. We already love GH II - this looks even more fun.
- robdiggity, on 10/11/2007, -7/+12Your "wifey," eh? Love your website dude.

Yeah, it was the eighties. But still. - tuxidomasx, on 10/11/2007, -9/+8looks fun
i just really wish the controllers were a little bigger. i had the same issue with GH.
all the controllers look like something you'd get a 4 year old for Christmas- TheBigBad, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The controllers in the final version of Rock Band will be bigger. They are 3/4 scale Fender Stratocasters.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Rockband-guitar.jpg- Disease, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The GH controllers were 3/4 scale Gibson SGs so it'll be about the same.

- nicko68, on 10/11/2007, -3/+33Why not just...
- drive a real race car?
- fight a real war?
- kill real aliens?
- play real professional hockey/baseball/basketball/football/soccer?
etc.
etc.- ikickass, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7brb, goin to the moon
- Danjamin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Because those things are a lot harder than learning how to play an instrument.
- guillo98, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I here I thought that I could actually have a semester without playing video games and concentrate on studying....oh well....
- jackieshmackie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i've detected a pattern: my grades start to take a nosedive every time the new gh comes out.. now two games come out this fall, and both have weezer on them! there goes bringing up my 2.0 ):
- FierceGrape, on 10/11/2007, -10/+4No foot pedals for the drums? Boo.
- CybrStuff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I think it was the yellow bars that went across the drum part, but it does have (I imagine) a kick pedal.

- Cyrusman, on 10/11/2007, -18/+4I'm not a big fan of these music games. Sure they're addicting, but they often make it too easy to play songs that take real talent to play on real instruments.
- Skanadian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Because it's a god damn video game. A real guitar has 6 strings tons of frets, unlike a guitar hero controller with 5 buttons.
- MacSpoofing, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I'm not a big fan of sports games. Sure they're addicting, but they often make it too easy to play sports that take real talent to play.
- asdfrewq, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Yeah, and what's up with those driving games that make it too easy to drive race cars that take real talent to drive in real life? And don't even get me started on shoot em ups....
Get over yourself. As a musician, I can tell you now it takes very little actual talent to play a guitar, or any rock instrument really. There's literally millions of cover bands out there, some good some bad, but it certainly means being able to play an instrument is no unique ability. Songwriting on the other hand, well that's another story altogether.. but I very much doubt we'll see a simple computer game based it any time soon. - romainechester, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yeah and I hate Half Life 2 too. They make them too easy to toss people around with the gravity gun than to do it in real life.
- TheBigBad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Lighten up Francis.
- Cyrusman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Alright, all of you make a good point.
- Richggs, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Oh come on look at the "controller" its the size of a guitar, and 5 buttons - the exact amount you need to play a real guitar, What i'm saying is guitar hero is trying to be TOO realistic and really has nothing to offer outside of playing a real guitar.
- ayeroxor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Buried for not knowing the difference between addictive and addicting
- robotsound, on 10/11/2007, -13/+3it seems like im the only one who feels this way but these games suck. they suck so bad. ever pick up a REAL guitar? real guitars are not that hard to play and are very much more rewarding. guy debord warned us of this kind of future. start a real band with your real friends and write real songs for gods sake.
- amythewasp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yeah, I play guitar too, and this game looks incredibly dorky. But it also looks fun as hell. This would be great at a party. Its like karekoe (sp) and a video game combined.
- CybrStuff, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I'm going to reply to you and Cyrusman above in one fell swoop. I am sick and ***** tired of people whining about other people playing Guitar Hero (and now Rock Band) instead of playing the real instruments. Frankly, playing a real guitar for most of the songs in those games IS significantly harder, and the point of the game is to let people have a good time without having to practice for hours a day. Just because you would rather spend your time learning a real instrument doesn't mean that everyone has to in order to get the exhilaration of tagging that hard part of the solo. Stay in your practice room and leave the GH/RB players the hell alone.
- jetfuel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I play guitar and bass guitar. I still enjoy this game. A LOT.
- joehodgson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2My neighbours are gonna be pissed when I get that drum controller!
- Yondelldude, on 10/11/2007, -12/+9I seem to remember an Ars Technica article that was popular a while back asking the question of weather or not the instant success granted by GH cheapened the experience of playing the Guitar as a whole. They concluded that it didn't and I agree, as a guitarist I enjoy playing the real instrument as well as playing the game because it allows me to feel like I'm playing an iconic song without all the frustrations of spending hours trying to nail a particular lick or run to achieve the same goal. Because I'll be honest, I'm not the most patient person
However, in the case of Rock Band I feel like a hallowed union of musicians is being violated here. It takes years, sometimes the better part of a decade or more before a band made up of 4 or 5 or even more separate minds is able to act like a singular entity in the writing process as well as on stage. Picking up a guitar by yourself and expecting to rock from the beginning is one thing, getting 4 friends together and expecting to rock as a group is a complete other. The game may seem fun but for some reason it just feels wrong to me.- Peril, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10So in other words "I don't want gamers to steal my thunder by pretending to be a musician"
I guess that you would'nt like digital painters if you were a traditional artist either. I can see where you are coming from but think you are putting too much credence into a game.
These games are fun simulations but thats as far as it goes. Your band experience is still sacred and whole to you, don't let others having fun threaten your purity. - Gudlyf, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5So are we to expect that American war heroes are complaining that combat games like 'Call of Duty' cheapen what it's like to really be at war? I'm guessing no, because they realize it's a GAME.
- Bakkster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Id say it actually INCREASES players respect for soldiers. After play CoD, Battlefeld 1942, etc Omaha Beach scares the crap out of me. I'm that much more appreciative that those men and women were there to do the job, because I would have soiled myself and promptly gotten shot.
- Dingo1919, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2But there are many many of us that simply do not and will not have any musical ability and this is the only way we have of experiencing what it must be like to be in a band.
- Yondelldude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1good point, dugg up for that
- godd4242, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1actually i feel its a legtimate point, but I'll bet you a dollar that if you get your friends together with Rock Band, you're all not gonna play that spectacularly together.
I want it now cause omst of my friends have gone off to college, and ain't around to play games or in fact, real music with anymore.
Playing over xbox live will be kickass
PS yah we had a real band and yah we sucked
- Peril, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10So in other words "I don't want gamers to steal my thunder by pretending to be a musician"
- kelbear, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1They have solos, so freaking win. Drum set needs at least one footpedal. Period.
- xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2watch the video again, instead of being a jackass.
- merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The drum set has a footpedal, so guess we can check that off.
- nicko68, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I'm not sure that Rock Band will mean that Guitar Hero III is doomed.
Rock Band is only for XBox360 and PS3. There are still a lot of PS2s around, and people currently unwilling to upgrade to a next gen console.
Some people only care about playing guitar.
Some people are big fans and will want to play all the songs available, and so will buy Rock Band AND Guitar Hero III. - PyroRaver, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2HELL YEAH! This game looks so awesome! I wonder how much the entire set it going to cost?
- xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6OMG Free Form play (where they got to play whatever they wanted at the end) is looking amazing.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's straight out of Amplitude, another of Harmonix's (GH developer) games.
- BackEnThaWomb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1/pantscream
- setsuna, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Love how they put the black man on bass...
- Yondelldude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that's just the natural order of the universe
- sexydawg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Unfortunately after seeing the guy playing guitar I realize how I must look when I play Guitar Hero and I can never play again.
- marx, on 10/11/2007, -11/+3why don't people just learn to play the real thing? so much more fun..
- heiroglyph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Why do people always bring this crap up?
This is a timing game, nothing more. None of the players have delusions that it is more than that.
Don't think that this is a threat to music. My son had no interest in music until he was exposed to it through this game and now he's playing a real guitar.- marx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Did I say it was a threat to music at all? I said it IS more fun to play the real thing.. btw, good for him
- heiroglyph, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Sorry about that. It has almost become a troll response.
I agree that real instruments are much more fun, but this is probably the best intro available today for the uninitiated. I think it gave him a start on the confidence, timing and dexterity that he needed to stick with a real instrument.
- heiroglyph, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Sorry about that. It has almost become a troll response.
- marx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Did I say it was a threat to music at all? I said it IS more fun to play the real thing.. btw, good for him
- Pthalio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I've heard a lot of people have been inspired to learn to play an actual guitar after playing Guitar Hero.
- CapeKid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm one of those.
I still play both.
- CapeKid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm one of those.
- Ignathius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1ya. my idea of fun is to spend hours a day, for weeks and possibly even months on end to be able to get thru 1 song with a fair ammount of accuracy, as compared to spending a few hours to be able to get thru all the songs on hard/expert and 'feel' like i'm jamming out to a song i know.
i'm in it to have fun and kill some time. i have zero interest in learning to play the guitar or write music, so why should i bother when i can just have some silly fun on my 360 instead? - Danjamin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Because they're talentless losers that's why
- heiroglyph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Why do people always bring this crap up?
- Smitty41, on 11/05/2007, -6/+3Great idea, just completely impractical. I am going to get 4 people together all the time to play this game. Gonna spend $200 and play on my tv. You can barely see the lyrics on a big screen, try playing this on a regular tv. Sorry, good in theory, crap in regular life. I'll stick with guitar hero.
- jbiber, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Xbox live enabled jam sessions bro! Nothin to worry bout there, also who says you MUST buy all the instruments? You could just buy your favorite, then always play that.
- matthewdestroys, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3posers
- MHiggy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Did Harmonix get the ok to have their controllers wireless? I remember there was some kind of snag up when they were making GH2, and the X-plorer had to be wired, and in Rock Band, there are more controllers than there are USB ports, so i was just wondering...
- blijack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yes - wireless for PS3 and both wired & wireless for Xbox 360
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2They're supposed to be wireless.
You can use a USB hub if you need more than two devices plugged in.
Is there anything proving this was run on 360? The 360 guitars are USB, it's quite likely this was just shown as a development build on a PC or something.- MHiggy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I saw the X-plorer model and just assumed that it was on the 360. Didn't really think about it until now though.
- valentine76, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2when were drums ever set up like that? save your money get a fender squire for $200 and start a real band.
- crispycreme, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2really? just like that?
- sprinter9109, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2umm..i can't sing...
- Professr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0She can't either.
- glooper23, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3It looks alright if you already have a job and just want something to mess around with in your spare time. To me, it seems like we're trying to force something that would otherwise make much more sense with the real instruments. What I'm saying is, as a musician, that looked quite lame.
But again, if I wasn't a musician and had plenty of friends and a job, I could see it becoming a decent party gag. - Biks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5This game STILL won't get the bass player laid.
- pgphilip, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Games like this are GOOD for musicians because it leads people to respect their abilities more; they increase the public's overall interest in the instruments themselves and of rock music. However, very few people who play these games will be inspired to go on and actually learn an instrument. So if you're a guitarist, guitar hero addicts will drop their jaw at your playing, because THEY know they can't play anything on a REAL guitar.
- russelbutt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2OMGGODTEHROXORZ!
article title says it all for me.. holy crap this is going to be awesome.. I WANT THE DRUM KIT!! - iStunT, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3First time I was like "wow" second time I jizzed myself.
- JoeBaynham, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9OMG That looks great! Now I just need some friends...
- nomeus, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2to each their own but this is one of the gayest things ever and by gay i mean ***** retarded
- remo2012, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This should be a video game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24FhTl_f9Vg - macbookpromat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Man, the game looks fun. I personnaly sucked majour balls at GH1 and 2, but the drums on this game look to be quite easy (of course playing a 4/4 rock beat was never hard) which might make me want to get this game. Of course, I don't think I really need this though, I could just start a band and play my real set instead of spending a fortune. That money could go into replacing my ***** cymbals.
- khyberkitsune, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Man, if they made the electric drum kit with a few cymbals and a bass pedal, and even put in a standalone session with multiple drum kit setups for free play, this game would convince me to actually buy a console system and move away from the PC for once. I'm no fan of GH but this just looks bad-ass, and it appeals to the drummer in me.
- drunkjack, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3Man, that is quite possibly the lamest thing I have ever seen.
Anyone who likes the idea of this game is a dork.
Has a real cheap guitar.
Plays 2 chords.
Cooler than these nerds. - Azdak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Sick...I just hope they've got Dragonforce and Deth Klok
- stfunoobs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2agreed!
- Terrorific, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1I thought Second Life was pretty dumb until I found this: Joining a fake rock band in a video game that you even have to purchase gear to play. I guess it's everyone's dream to become a Guitar God without actually learning to play guitar. Kids....this is for you. I'm prepared to be dugg-down by the haters, so have at it.
- Sixcolors, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yours is just a different kind of hate.
- joegibes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What looks cool about this game is that you can actually play the song on a real drum kit after learning it ingame (on higher difficulties of course), because the controller is essentially a cheap-o electric drum set.
And you can learn to sing it fairly well... But since the game chooses to recognize syllables and sounds over pitch you might sound pretty bad. - captainbrian, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1?
- Pritchard, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0I won't be playing any of these Guitar games until the controllers get more like real guitars. I want to be able to hook my my electric to one device, then that to my PS3 or Xbox 360.
- Sanctums, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2I agree with everyone who is saying "Why not just start a rock band". This Game is completely lame.
- Sixcolors, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah, let us get some guys together who have nothing going on in their life except music and tour the country, trying to scrape by in hopes that someone will notice us and sign us up for a contract so that we can make more than paltry bar and nightclub earnings.
The whole point of these games is that we don't all want to give up our lives to chase a dream like being a rock star. Those who can't afford the investment of time or money (or both) to learn to play and sing can get some friends together for a good time at a party. Eat, drink, and play Rock Band. It's not about getting laid or earning money or playing real instruments, it's about having fun with a pick up and play game.
- digitul, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1anyone comparing this to rbeing in a real band is an idiot. i'm in a "real band" with an album and merch and everything, yet we still play guitar hero all the time. anyone trying to look cool by saying "ill just learn real instruments" is a bigger nerd than anyone that plays these games
- Danjamin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Just because you burnt some CDs and have a cafepress store doesn't mean you're a real band.
- Sixcolors, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So what is a "real" band? I just thought I'd get a definition from the expert in the crowd.
- Danjamin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Just because you burnt some CDs and have a cafepress store doesn't mean you're a real band.
- EmmSee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Who has that many friends??
