‘GTA IV’ Breaks Three Guinness World Records!
geeksofdoom.com — It would seem that Niko Bellic ’s car-stealing, carnage-creating antics have resulted in the book being thrown at him — that book being the Guinness Book of World Records, with Grand Theft Auto IV stealing not one, but three records in the process!

- AgentofId, on 05/13/2008, -2/+7hahaha, you sir have shown yourself to be a bit out of touch with pop culture. Niko is the main character in GTA IV, you should check it out some time, it's a fun game.

- TheBigBad, on 05/13/2008, -11/+8The single player is pretty fun but the after playing COD4, the muliplayer is terrible. Clunky controls, bad camera angles, etc. As soon as I finish the single player, mine is going on ebay.
- natastna2, on 05/13/2008, -8/+5Yeah, couldn't agree with you more. I hate that auto-aim is on as default, I hate the cover system, I hate that stupid little pointless roll you can do and I hate the driving. Single player is fun though.
- Akaji, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2Turn off auto-aim as the server, don't use it, don't use it, ... okay, you have a point there.
- natastna2, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1You can't turn off auto-aim unless you're hosting and shouting TURN OFF AUTO-AIM! normally doesn't work. I really just don't understand why you'd have auto-aim on as default in a game where its a lot about shooting each other.
- Akaji, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2Turn off auto-aim as the server, don't use it, don't use it, ... okay, you have a point there.
- Xspire, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3I agree with the online controls. The cover system is a bit flawed. And COD4 does make GTA4's online play look like it was hastily thrown together in a couple of hours before shipping out. Honestly I think FPS's do online play better (for the most part). But I would definitely put this game up in the top 10 at least in online play. But most definitely the single player is what should be selling this game. It is one of the most entertaining, long lasting, multi-dimensional experiences you will have in any game on any console from any time period.
- natastna2, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1How could you put GTAIV's online play in the top 10?
- Xspire, on 06/07/2008, -0/+1Probably because 99.99999909% of the games with online capability are total pieces of crap online.
- natastna2, on 05/13/2008, -8/+5Yeah, couldn't agree with you more. I hate that auto-aim is on as default, I hate the cover system, I hate that stupid little pointless roll you can do and I hate the driving. Single player is fun though.

- hpfreak26, on 05/13/2008, -2/+7Because they beat Deathly Hallows. But as much as I love Harry Potter, it was well-earned.
- KingGoonie, on 05/14/2008, -4/+3But they didn't beat Harry Potter, they didn't even come close... again stop with this "biggest" nonsense. Its HIGHEST GROSSING. Biggest means bigger.. more poeople... Harry Potter had more then DOUBLE the amount of people in bookstores in its first 24 hours then gamers in picking up teh game. - DaHuuuuuudge, on 05/13/2008, -7/+3Harry Potter is a book, that's a completely different category than a game. It's record was not broken.
- ErrorS, on 05/13/2008, -2/+9They specifically mentioned it in the article.. not sure if it's true, but they give the impression that deathly hollows was the 'fastest selling entertainment release", in which case GTA4 just knocked it off its pedastal.
- Akaji, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2*pedestal
And yeah, fictional books count as entertainment. - KingGoonie, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1Harry Potter is still the fastest seling entertainment release, it sold twice as many books in its first 24 hours as GTA4 sold games... so Harry Potter still has the record, and sold much faster. They are talking about money, which is idiotic and has no bearing on how big something is, just how high grossing.
- DaHuuuuuudge, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1They just listed the highest grossing, movie, game, and book in the article. A lot of games and movies are going to beat Harry Potter's gross record because games and movies cost more, but Harry Potter still has the record of fastest selling entertainment release and highest grossing book. GTA didn't beat Harry Potter in any record.
- KingGoonie, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1Dahuuuudege, totally agree with everything you said, but actually hardcover books cost more then movies... usually. Paperbacks cost less, but usually new releases, like Harry Potter, are first only released in hardcover.

- indisguise, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sold more copies than GTA4 (8.3 million), but most retailers sold the book for $17 so it only made 220 million

- mrc1ark, on 05/13/2008, -6/+81It would seem that Niko Bellic’s car-stealing, carnage-creating antics have resulted in the book being thrown at him — that book being the Guinness Book of World Records, with Grand Theft Auto IV stealing not one, but three records in the process!
Grand Theft Auto IV was released on April 29, 2008 for XBox 360 and PS3 and has since gone on to break the following three records:
- Biggest Entertainment Release of All-Time
- Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours
- Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours
These three records can be added to another for GTA IV, which holds the accolade of being the most expensive game ever developed (a reported cost of US $100 million). The game took over three and a half years to create, with a development crew of over a thousand… I’m sure Rockstar will agree — money very well spent.
GTA IV has racked up an impressive tally by selling 3.6 million copies on its first day of release — thats a whopping US $310 million! This feat has established the game as “the most profitable entertainment release of all-time.”
Just to put this in perspective, here are the next highest earners in entertainment circles:
- Fastest-selling video game in 24 hours: Halo 3 (US$170m)
- Fastest-selling theatrical movie in 24 hours: Spider-Man 3 (US$60m)
- Fastest-selling book in 24 hours: Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows (US$220)
With such an impressive haul, I hope Rockstar keeps up the momentum and develops the game further with the reported episodic downloadable content.
Now — I’m going to head back to Liberty City for some more explosions and car chases… I think I’m getting the shakes - yep! GTA IV is Officially more addictive than crack! Well… almost. ;)
[via: Guinness World Records]- pandorazboxx, on 05/14/2008, -4/+2am I missing something with the numbers here.... 3.6 million copies on the first day at $60 a copy is only $216 million... to get $310 million you gotta pay over $80 a disc...
- morphinapg, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5what about the special edition versions?
- rpycroft, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1Here in the UK console games are usually £40/£50. With the exchange rate I think that makes it around $80 US.

- Chassit, on 05/13/2008, -3/+3That is a local problem sir...if other games work it is likely the media that the game came on, otherwise your console is broken.
- ausfahrt, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Incorrect there is a known freezing issue with the game that has not been patched. The multiplayer patch came out last week but if you call rockstar they will confirm that the freezing has yet to be fixed.
- crownedgriffin, on 05/13/2008, -2/+3You playing the PS3 version? They already patched it. If you have the patch and you're still having issues, then you've got something else going on.
- ausfahrt, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1They never patched it. The patch was for the multiplayer and I have talked to Rockstar who has confirmed that the patch was not to fix the freezing problem.

- deadnoob, on 05/13/2008, -2/+4It just broke my 360 about 20 minutes ago :(
- Tomson74, on 05/13/2008, -6/+1no the game didn't. M$ did.
- ChinezePanda, on 05/14/2008, -4/+1Im still playing it on my PS3 as of 20 minutes ago.. about 30 hours in.. been on all day and night.. whisper quiet.
My 360 craves the chance it will never get lol.
- frazw, on 05/13/2008, -2/+3If, as the antigaming crowd believe, such games are harmful breaking these records should result in a spike in violent crime worldwide.
Either that or they should realise that their minority opinion on how harmful games can be only applies to impressionable people like themselves who fear losing control. Perhaps it is better they don't play such games. - harrisbradley, on 05/13/2008, -5/+15"Guinness world records are such bull these days. Its full of crap like who snorted the most lines of coke using only their left nostril on Tuesday in a leap year." again, it was Chuck Norris

- Vironex, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5If you can read this, the reply function works and you should have used it.
- jlebrech, on 05/13/2008, -4/+3I try to see how many cripples i can make before someone dies or the cops start chasing. that's fun :) should be an online mode.
- christo8, on 05/14/2008, -1/+0theeeeere is.
- Viti, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1Seriously? Buy the game. You'll find an online mode... duh?
- Philbert, on 05/13/2008, -5/+5Huh. Maybe it's just because I'm not a big fan of GTA, but while it felt big, it didn't feel like the biggest entertainment release of all time. I might even say the Spider-Man movies felt bigger, at least the first and second ones.
- nickert0n, on 05/13/2008, -5/+3Oh you can ***** right off bitch.
- Octosink, on 05/13/2008, -4/+2If you're one of the GTA fans, and there's many, it was huge. Maybe the Spidey film felt like a bigger release because it's has a larger audience, while GTA is pretty much just for adults.
- sg7791, on 05/13/2008, -3/+4Adults over the age of 13. Seriously, everybody plays GTA.
- mphree, on 05/14/2008, -3/+1... that's what she said.
- uselessexpert, on 05/13/2008, -4/+7DAMN! I love that game...
But how dows 3.6 million copies at $60.00 total $310 mil?
Did I add something wrong?- nickert0n, on 05/13/2008, -2/+7Online content, +Freakin deluxe editions with useless safes and duffle bags

- MaxMWood, on 05/13/2008, -3/+39What seriously worries me more is why the hell Spiderman 3 is the fastest selling theatrical movie in 24 hours.. That movie was so awful.
- shredswithpiks, on 05/13/2008, -2/+19because spiderman 2 was awesome and everyone expected it to continue similarly...
- vism, on 05/13/2008, -3/+2Nobody knew how bad it was in the first 24 hours, they just really wanted to see it.
- Namaha, on 05/13/2008, -5/+3Because it was just as hyped as GTA IV
- Akaji, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4One word: marketing.

- KingOfKings01, on 05/13/2008, -6/+0gta iv is a awsome game!
- Kenzan, on 05/13/2008, -2/+14I hope Entertainment execs take notice of this and understand that people will pay good money for quality.
- ibeetle, on 05/13/2008, -2/+10They do. Which is why IRON MAN made a whole lot more than Speed Racer.
- Jones82, on 05/14/2008, -3/+1Even if the game sucked it probably would of made a good percentage of that
- Tomson74, on 05/13/2008, -2/+2Well it did have some bugs in it. Not saying I didn't like it. I did. But I wouldn't call it flawless.
- luckyguy2000, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1i only found one bug (not really, more a non polished surface) yet:
if you enter a car which doors are blocked by something it can happen that niko just floats through the closed door. (i think the door has to be open a little bit and a street light blocks it that it cant be opened completely)
im at 60% completed.
- luckyguy2000, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1i only found one bug (not really, more a non polished surface) yet:
- FozzDog, on 05/13/2008, -1/+6Great news, I cant wait to finally get the game... Holding off till the end of my exams
- luckyguy2000, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1poor guy :(
- CondiRice, on 05/13/2008, -5/+2As good as breaking 3 records sounds, won't the next thing that is the "Biggest Entertainment Release of All-Time" also become the "Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours" and "Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours", breaking all three at once again? And what about the last thing that became "Biggest Entertainment Release of All-Time", did that break all three?
- GeneralBison, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1Errr, no.
Just because something is classed as an 'entertainment release' doesn't mean it's a video game.
If a video game sells like crap during the first 24 hours of release and then goes on to sell millions, it won't break either of the latter record.
- GeneralBison, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1Errr, no.
- ibeetle, on 05/13/2008, -5/+5The reason why #1 and #3 on the list are ***** is because video games cost $60.00 and movie tickets cost a national average of $6.88 (source: National Association of Theater Owners). If a Star Wars (the good ones) or Spider-man or Titanic cost $60.00 a ticket they would have killed any video game sales.
Of course on the other hand the enjoyment from GTA IV is a lot longer lived than the two hour running time of a typical movie.- logan074, on 05/14/2008, -2/+4However nearly everyone has a movie theater somewhere near them but only 37% of people own a video game system. Also I know I would never pay 60 dollars to see a movie in the theater and I know many others that will not even pay 10 dollars for a ticket.
- Akaji, on 05/14/2008, -2/+2Yeah, I've gone to like two movies in the past year... $8-10 a ticket is just absurd when I could buy an only video game for $20 and play it for ten times the length of the movie.
- ToothyMcshark, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1Gotta love Netflix.
- Vajrakila, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1Hell Yeah! This game was worth the wait! Why wouldn't it make into the Guinness Book of World Records? It's only a best-selling franchise that has had each sequel do better than the last! Plus, it's the best entry yet!
- Dojjah, on 05/14/2008, -3/+2Does this guarantee it Game of The Year?
- devinxcore, on 05/14/2008, -8/+1GTA IV is Officially more addictive than crack! Well… almost. ;) hahah

- dustinjr1993, on 05/14/2008, -8/+3i wouldnt say nothing if the driving in the game wasnt nerfed!!! this game goes in my book as
game that deserves to be overrated- neptunesblood, on 05/14/2008, -8/+2Agree with you, the driving blows hard in this version. No matter what I do the cars have a mind of there own and are very hard to control.
- Ch0mpr, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2it's because you're a dumb n00b :P
- Xspire, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Do you really drive? In real life that is. The driving is far more realistic than most games, perhaps that is your trouble. In reality do you slam on the E-brake or parking brake before you make a sharp turn? No. Use the regular brake and don't wait til the last minute. You'll find the cars in the game are far easier to handle.
