- kruykaze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Soon we'll have an exploit, autoinstaller and XBMC360 all in one CD.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Whoops, misread. Digg me down.
- RiverBelow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yay, maybe I can finally play .avi's. Stupid Microsoft and their lack of support for GOOD file formats.
- blackandblue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2oh freaking sweet
- wthnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Wishing I had an exploitable box ever more now. The developement continues.
- Farik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The exploit is fine and all, great as a proof of concept and provides hope for future hacks, but new games will include a firmware fix that will patch this.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1New kernels (which most 360s have due to live updates) already do.
- tr0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Microsoft put dashboard update patches on original XBox games as well, but the modders got around that very quickly. About updates--first, they learned how to downgrade the dashboard, then they actually figured out how to use exploits on any dash with the older games that still had the said 'sploits.
I know that this situation is quite different, but both situations have their similarities.
- Interloper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1You mean kernel update.
- wonderjim, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I'm equal parts curious and ignorant on this issue. What does booting Linux do for you on the 360?
- buk110, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is more of a proof of concept type scenario. Similar to that of the first X-Box this should hopefully allow further progress to run custom applications.
I recall a friend of mine having a 'modded' XBox in college, running various emulators and roms. Nothing is better than playing Techmo Bowl or Mike Tyson Punch Out on an XBox. Well unless it's on a 360

- seanp2500, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4yes it is true kernel update not firmware per se. This infuriates me. I have the 4532 kernal and I hate how microsoft is preventing me from playing new games. I pray that someone figures out a way around this. In the mean time I am hanging on to this kernal for dear life...
- MaximegalonInfo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5How dare MSFT enforce their hardware policy that you probably signed off on. Everyone should get cutting edge subsidized hardware with no restrictions at all.
I'm all for what these groups do, but come on. MSFT doesn't have to play along.
Linux runs on most everything. What does the average non-hacker care about this for? Build your on MythTV/whatever box right now with that $300 computer. - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9Come to the dark side, Luke. Sony encourages you to install Linux on the PS3. The water's great over here. ;)
- Farik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The kernel is stored in the firmware, I'm not talking about a fix for the DVD drive firmware hack...
- bolerobell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The hardware isn't subsidized anymore. MS makes profit on 360 hardware sales now. Since it isn't subsidized, I'd certainly like to do whatever the hell I wanted with it. My big desire is XBMC360. Couldn't care less about playing copied games (never did it with the Xbox).
- shammi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0That's fine, but not everyone has noble intentions as you do. There are a whole bunch of guys waiting to get a reliable mod that they can sell and profit from just to allow guaranteed pirated games working. That in turn will fuel the piracy profiteers and the bottom line is that MS will lose potential revenue from sales of games. Also remember that MS might be making a profit on each box sold _now_. It still has to recoup the loss that it sold the first 10 million consoles at and not to mention the R&D costs that went into making this console.

- dogstylee, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9Seems overly complicated and pointless.
Impress your friends by installing Linux on your Xbox! You too can enjoy the benifits of word processing on your TV, and playing ***** games some Korean guy made on your next-gen console.- McTendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is NOTHING wrong with BZFTanks!!!
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You miss the point - Being able to install Linux on the 360 means you can play "backed up games", and much more importantly - Xbox Media Center (or MythTV) for the Xbox 360 is possible!
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I agree, it seems pointless. There is the proof of concept factor, leading to the POSSIBILITY of playing backed up games and homebrew apps like XBMC, but I for one, got my 360 for the online capabilities. Who wants a 360 that can't go on live because of it is modded? No Halo 3 on live? No Halo Wars on live? No Halo 2 w/ the new maps on live? Screw it, I'll stick the the MS firmware, and leave my modded regular Xbox for the rest.
- MaximegalonInfo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Yah, but think about it, you probably have to spend money to either rent of buy the game King Kong....

*shudder* - WermerSkoch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Why, oh why did I update my 360? :(
- johnnevermind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The same reason most of us did, to play on XBOX Live. Without live your missing out on the best part of the 360.
- dorkino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7KING KONG KING KONG!!
- Just1nD, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3"Xbox360 with kernel 4532 or 4548" psheewwwwwwww right over my head. is a kernel basically passin the ball from hardware to applications? you guys fascinate me with knowing exactly what is meant by a 4-digit number
digg me down and i'll digg you down, *mean face*- McTendo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Digging you up out of intimidation!!!
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"you guys fascinate me with knowing exactly what is meant by a 4-digit number"
Err, those numbers are just version numbers - Just like Firefox has version numbers like v2.0.0.3, it could easily have been "version 2003". Not sure, but I assume you can find them in the System blade on the Xbox360 dashboard
- mikeyeah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I almost digged this because I thought it said "King Kong vs. Shredder." Cowabunga dudes!
- tritun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1SWEET! This week i picked up a Core unit at Wally world, the kernel is 2888! WHOOHOO!
now for the HDD before M$ ends up putting a kernel patch on it! - johnnyredbone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How do you find out which kernel you have?
- trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Amazing.
I know there are some lurkers that are thinking "So let me get this straight, I put Linux on my 360 to use gaim and firefox?".
Look at some of the opensource apps for linux (sourceforge.net) - LiRM35, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0What is it with you Linux people - do something really impressive like getting Linux to boot on my toilet so I can schedule flushes with cron.
Jesus ***** Christ - enough of these lame assed Linux stories already. - tritun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@johnnyredbone
only after I bought it! - tritun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@johnnyredbone
sorry, could not get edited fast enough.
just look through the serial tag opening on the box, mine was mfg'd on 12-13-06!! kernel 2888
digg down my previous comment! - Interloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no farlic, the kernel is not stored in teh firmware. the firmware will not be updated. The kernel will every timen you get on live. SO... no more live if you want linux for now.
- seanp2500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just bought the 20gb hd out of fear of a forced kernal update from the new elite 120gb myself. What a ripoff. Also flash the drive. A hair raising but relatively painless experience for my pricey next gen system. But I gotta do what I gotta do. I love my modded xbox's. I love playing XMugen on them especially. If this could possibly allow me to one day play Xmugen on my xbox 360 then I am all for it. This is my reasoning. I want a nice mugen or infinity cat. Also I have high hopes for what xbox 360 might be able to emulate down the road from what I have used xbox 1 for. I also feel an exploited 360 could potentially have a far superior xbox media center app. I am not so much interested in the media center abilites since I have the xbox1 for that. So for the time being I stay 4532. Though I will be upset not to play halo 3. That game might be my breaking point.
As for the fellow who said Microsoft has the right to do this. True but bollocks to microsft. This is trusted computing as it's worst. Reason? Simple. The forced game updates to me are intolerable. I am able to do without xbox live (Just go to a friends or play someone at home or whatever.) but to force kernal update via game is just lame. The thing that makes it worse is it does not prevent playing pirated games. Just user mode. Lame. - uchimalbanish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Perfect! Sweet, dugg it.
