Nintendo announces 4.5 million Wii consoles sold worldwide
vgcharts.org?wii=4.50 — Nintendo have today announced that their groundbreaking Wii console has become the fastest-selling console in history selling 4.50 million units in just under three months - this is more than the PS2 or Gamecube sold in the same timeframe. "The console has been a huge success all around the world" said president Satoru Iwata.
- 1309 diggs
- digg it
- Wii69, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28Fastest selling ever? Is this correct?
- brainboy77, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28yea, i think so. remember the 360 had crap sales in the start.
- Mogwlaii, on 10/12/2007, -31/+2Yeah 360 was sold out everywhere - but then so was Wii
- bitterg, on 10/12/2007, -19/+10Wii had much more supply than the Xbox 360 though. I wonder how long it will last?
- arbguy1, on 10/12/2007, -63/+8whats with digg users, are they obsessed with nintendo or something? as much as i like and respect the company, i cant help but wonder how come articles about the wii are on digg all the time?
- ronaldst, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42Because buying a Wii fights global warming and intolerance. :)
- maglob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27@arbguy1: Because the wii is making the news all the time, because its doing so much better than expected
- glasgowm, on 10/12/2007, -19/+5@ bitterg.
Wii are more supply than the 360? I seriously doubt that.
The Wii is still impossible to get in the UK, I've been trying to get one for months. - VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12well if it is the fastest selling unit ever... then nintendo needs to also start selling more games for the system. we have pretty much 3/4 of the games, but would like more for our wii. stop delaying games like you did for the gamecube so you can spread out the system more.
- jonnyboy88, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5I think before this it was the dreamcast.
- DocWhoWho, on 10/12/2007, -21/+1wii and ps3 still available at eb games in phoenix...never have they sold out
these so called sell outs, are not sales to individuals, quit distorting facts - Mrstupid7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@docwhowho
Well I've been checking at least once a week and still haven't found a Wii yet. Neither here in boone or in raleigh, although I've only been to raleigh three times since november. - digguser949, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@docwhowho
I call BS on that. I was at target in Irvine CA with at least 50 lined up to get a Wii most of them left without a Wii. The sell outs are real. Idiot :) Go buy a PS3... - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Not sure, but ...
once upon a time, a guy came on a stage and said "you will experience a gaming revolution".
that, he's done more than anyone else, for sure. - chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sorry for the comment abuse but this is in no way official. VGcharts.org is NOT an official mouthpiece of Nintendo, and merely makes predictions based on actual data with some educated guesses and hot air thrown into the mix.
There have been no press release from Nintendo regarding Wii sales, and iirc, they said that new numbers should come out this Thursday. - sych0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+134.5 million, and I still can't ***** find one.
- verifex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Now maybe Nintendo will take us seriously and ramp up production, it was released 2 in a half months ago and I've NEVER seen a Wii anywhere other then eBay.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"but but but it's just an impulse buy!!1!!" -- Some moron called Phil Harrisson.
It's just funny how if the other companies are doing good, it's great. Nintendo doing good? It's all luck...
I hate haters. Oh, wait... I mean...
- philgal, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Well I assume they mean fastest to 4.5 million which seems plausible...
- Mewchu11, on 10/12/2007, -5/+58It's more amazing to me that the Wii already has half of the 360's sales numbers when it's only been out for about three months to the 360's 15. Lets see here... if rates hold steady (which is unlikely) the Wii will surpass 360 in totals sales in... 146 days at 11.75 million consoles each!
July 8th 2007. Mark your calenders folks!- Mogwlaii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Well as you say I can't imagine rates will continue at the pace set so far, but I think that by christmas it would be plausible for the two systems to be equal...
- Mewchu11, on 10/12/2007, -5/+59Yeah, fun secondary fact.
Wiis per day: 50000
360s per day: 19800
PS3s per day: 19000
PS3's better pick it up, at this rate they'll literally never catch up to 360. - Mogwlaii, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3So PS3 is actually tracking behind the 360?
Wow - Mewchu11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Yeah, and I know someones gonna call me a wiifanboy for suggesting that from these rough numbers that the PS3 is doomed to be in 360's shadow, but if rates are going to go anywhere it's usually down. The wii rate will fall as will the PS3, but the 360 has already had the launch rush mostly neutralized, so it won't fall nearly as fast. Meaning that likely it will still be selling faster than the PS3
Barring Europe of course, that launch will be interesting. - Mogwlaii, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Yeah I think the PS3 Europe launch will be huge - much like PSP but it will probably die down after a few weeks
- Mewchu11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20It depends on faith mostly. Europe has seen Japan's and USA's launch and fallout. It probably won't be a positive influenced on their buying habits considering the prices over there are even somewhat higher.
- Mogwlaii, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Well i think in terms of launch titles it looks really strong.
But anyway, this is a Wii piece of news, not PS3!! - aurrea, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I'm not sure if they will keep this pace but demand his still high. I waited in front of circuit city and got the 20th of 22 yesterday. When I got there people had been waiting for about 3 hours before the store opened. Obviously not as extreme as release but still very impressive.
ps. I love this thing! I'm 27 years old and felt like a 6 year old at Christmas driving home with it! - Dominatus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1http://www.vgcharts.org/aconscomps.php?name1=PS3&name2=X360&type=0&align=0
How is the PS3 lagging compared to the Xbox360 in the same timeframe respective to launch? It's not. It's even more extreme in Japan.
Btw I own a xbox 360 (and love it), and I really hope it succeeds (def want MGS4 to be ported) but the bottom line is Digg has greatly exaggerated the PS3's sales figures. - gallagherFTW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is it me or does it seem as if Mogwlaii and Mewchu are the same person arguing with himself for more diggs?
- freakgd, on 10/12/2007, -39/+3people are just going crazy for this system, it seems more like the newest "thing" its sicking i dont know why by its just sickening
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I'd agree... If I knew what "sicking" meant....
- TSAU956, on 05/12/2008, -14/+8Why did they announce 4.5 million as a milestone? Why not 5 million or something, that seems like a more traditional benchmark.
"Pop out the champagne people, we just sold our 7,255,164th console!"- alex189a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Its the under 3 months part that makes it relevant. I assume "under" means a few days short of, btw.
- zander106, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4There is no announcement. This just points to the latest estimates on vgcharts.org. Nintendo hasn't made any official announcement as suggested in the story. The submitter even added a completely bogus suffix to the URL to make it appear more legit (that ?wii=4.5 part).
When Nintendo makes a big announcement, I'm sure we'll all know for reals. I don't see why fanboys continue to trumpet completely fabricated estimates of the supposedly "current" state of console sales numbers. - yugiohdan6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@zander106
no he HAD to add that to the end to be allowed to submit it as a new store... otherwise it would have redirected him to another story saying that page was already submitted...
- Doorfingers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25I helped out this stat.
I am happy to say that I own one of the Wii's!- flakmunkey, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6me to :)
- ronaldst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I wish. I check the stores each week and no one has them in stock.
- Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5(too)
- Augie1969, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I just plugged it in today. My Girlfriend is addicted to Tennis and Boxing.
Went out and bought a wireless router just for the damn thing, and have been watching YouTube Wonder Years documentaries and surfing Digg.
It is bloody tremendous.
Now they just need to start coming out with some more games...
- DrunKao, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1bleeblaow, did you just give us the finger?
- bkool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Me too! I finally got mine last Sunday. Waited 40 minutes outside a Toys r us. I can't remember when I've been so giddy and excited over something (I'm 24). And this is my first console purchase ever. Work sucks cause I'm just counting down the time to when I can get home and use the Wii.
- Mogwlaii, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Well presumably they are now midway through Feb and this relates to their 6 million by end of March target...
- SGWyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1dang digg effect :(
- SGWyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3nvm it works! but why is it all i see is this
"Forget all the imitators, there is only one place on the internet where you'll find the latest, most accurate sales figures for the next gen consoles, right here on VGCharts.org:"
- SGWyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3nvm it works! but why is it all i see is this
- lookitsbeige, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4pwned!#@!
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I need to buy a wii and I cant, my friends cant, I can' t find one.
Well I could if I wanted to pay 2x the retail price for it. Which is something I would never do.- donjaime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Don't do it. You will regret paying so much for a game console.
I couldn't find one either for a long time, but I got help from a friend and finally got one.
I have learned (from hind sight) a few tips that may come in handy. Shipments come in sometime between 11:00 am and 12:30 for most stores. Best buy is usually the worst place to look since they sell off the quickest (even though they get the biggest shipments). Shipments come in semi randomly, and most employees don't give a rats ass about you and won't tell you when they expect another shipment.
So find a few Targets, Walmarts, Gamestops, Circuit Citys that are nearbye, and over the span of 2 weeks (they are bound to get a shipment) call the stores each day at around 11:30 to see if they got a shipment of wiis in. If they say no, then ask if their daily shipment has arrived. If it hasn't call back in a few minutes until it does. You are bound to catch a shipment before they put the stuff out. - SolipsismX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Donjaime may be correct about the other stores, but target gets all of their shipments in nightly so you want to go right when the store opens.
- jromz03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah like what the above said.
don't buy yet. wait for supply to catch up. until then, just be patient. - Scrubby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I found a shopko that is always empty. They happened to have 9 on hand when I was there. For some stupid reason they had them in the back and you had to ask for them.
- bkool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zbeast
Wait until Sunday. Toys r us and Target like to advertise the availability of the Wii in the Sunday paper. Get in line early. Target had 50 the day I went and the people that didn't get them at Target waited at Toys r Us until it opened at 11 to get one of the 33 that they had. The people that got them at Toys r us weren't waiting long, less than an hour.
- donjaime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Don't do it. You will regret paying so much for a game console.
- Paithan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15If only I could find one I would add to that number.
- internbrian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I saw people just walking up and buying them at the times square toys-R-us. They had a giant bin of wiimotes just looking for owners, I can't believe I didn't buy one!
- Mewchu11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Times Square gets the biggest single share of Wii's in the country, probably the world. So it's not shocking at all to hear.
- PaiZuri, on 10/12/2007, -60/+4Wow, so there are a few million Wii owners who:
Have already played through Zelda on their Wii - even though they could have played the better controlling GameCube version.
Looking at the 2007 Wii release list and feeling like idiots or suckers for wasting their money on another GameCube
Desperately hoping Nintendo is going to magically release some amazing and innovative Wii games in the next few months.
And have friends who are sick of telling them "no I don't want to come over an play Wii Sports with you"
But, hey!, how about that weather channel!- MaxPayne3476, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23It's funny how you can still make blatantly fanboy-comments even as the article here shows that the Wii kicks ass :)
- ts8lemonade, on 10/12/2007, -30/+6Agree with you 100% sir. I bought a Wii and played through Zelda and haven't touched in two months. There's really only two games coming out that I'd like and they won't be till way later so I'm selling my Wii to a friend. I almost feel bad for him, oh well.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I don't know about you, but there are more good Wii games slated to come out than I can afford to buy so I'm very happy.
- gallagherFTW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7super paper mario just got announced for april 9th, sonic just got awesome scores (i know, WTF?!?) and all of these VC releases during the game "drought"
- jromz03, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9another emo fanboy doing damage control! LOL!
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23It's funny how you can still make blatantly fanboy-comments even as the article here shows that the Wii kicks ass :)
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Right now, the WiiTracker only shows WalMart having the holiday bundle in stock :p
This ***** selling like hotcakes. - Jennica, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Hardly anybody I know has a Wii. It's funny.. I have one though and it's kind of funny to see people's envy. I wonder if Wii Play will be any good?
- ts8lemonade, on 10/12/2007, -25/+1Who cares the wii is stupid. Most of the people buying one are just buying one for Wii sports and won't play anything else. I can't wait till this goddamn hype finally dies down, because it will eventually.
- RG13, on 10/12/2007, -15/+10Psssh whatever
Its just an impulse buy - Swifty227, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Is there even a link to Nintendo announcing this? All I see is a link to vgcharts which is a site that estimates sales figures.
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I'm amazed by just how well it's been received, but I can't say I'm TOO surprised. Microsoft came out with a mediocre launch - but a strong console with a nice selling price. Sony FUBAR'd their launch by setting a too high price for a console that only offers a GFX upgrade to the PS3. Nintendo really did create a REVOLUTION that they set out to achieve.
My friend Suzzanne actually said to me today that over the weekend she played a Wii and she couldn't believe just how addictive and fun it was! Right now, I'm holding back to buy one and waiting until the rush dies down... if it ever does :) - CannedMango, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I love the Wii, but are we going to get a new Digg headline for every 500k consoles sold?
Breaking!!: OMFG 5 million Wii consoles sold!- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Yes. At least we've stopped with the updates on the number of songs sold on itunes.
- ToyYoda, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10*continues to rub my precious Wii with delight*
- blofeld9999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Are at least you aren't rubbing something else with delight.
- ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Just inaccurate Wii stroking.
Headline reads "Nintendo announces..." Yet a quick google search proves Nintendo has made no such announcement. What we do get is a link to vgcharts; Which has been constantly proven wrong over and over and over and over again. Even console makers have gone on record as saying they do not release their sales numbers, and that this website, and sites like it, numbers are wrong.
If Nintendo announced these sales figures why not link to the Nintendo press release? Because there was none. - crypthis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1digg now is a battlefield full of fanboys and fangirls lol
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Nintendo has pulled off the biggest magic trick ever: they keep reporting these amazing sales numbers, but chances are that you and most of the people haven't been able to score one yet.
- sysoprock, on 10/12/2007, -29/+12Man, Nintendo sucks so much! It's for little kids and stuff.
Now if you'll excuse me my frat brothers and I have a game of Halo 2 to attend to. Brock and Chance brought over some Heinikens and we have a Dave Matthews CD queued up and ready to go.
P.S. If we have time we might play some Madden also.- bucky31, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2P.S. Who cares
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12You've failed because
1- you're in a frat, you paid for your friends
2 - you are going to listen to Dave Matthews - jawbreaker4fs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Single worst comment I've ever seen on digg. If I could digg you down twice, it still wouldn't be enough.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"P.S. If we have time we might play some Madden also."
On the Wii, I hope! - sysoprock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20@all of you.
Jesus Christ, I kind of figured people on digg were smart enough to get a joke but apparently I was wrong.
I was making fun of people who hate on Nintendo for no reason, and no I'm not in a frat, and no I don't know anyone named Brock or Chance, and no I do not like Dave Matthews.
...and yes, for the record, I love Nintendo. - staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8no... don't tell me you were bro raped?!?
- sysoprock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@staticneuron
i dont want to talk about it :( - Chode2235, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I thought it was funny. If it makes you feel better.
- rschenkel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@sysoprock

You forgot to use the "sarcasm /sarcasm" markup.
/sarcasm - TheTacoBellDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL Bro Rape is the funniest derrickcomedy ever.
Dane Cook CD, GameCube, Dave Matthews Band CD, and . . . big black dildo.
- raiderj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it will be another couple months before people will have a reasonable time finding any Wii's in the retail channels without having to stand in line. I picked up mine from circuitcity.com on a fluke - they were sold out inside of 10 minutes.
For the lack of games on the Wii (if that is your opinion), within a year you will see some amazing games. Developers have even been blindsided with the demand for the system and will need a bit of time to catch up. This Christmas should prove a good one for Wii owners. - Luigi239, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Heh, my folks walked into Gamestop 40min. after they opened for Wii Preorders. They got #10.
God Im lucky. - zander106, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Buried as inaccurate. As others have mentioned, there is no official word from Nintendo that they have hit this supposed mark. Nintendo has not "announced" anything. No press release, nothing on PR Newswire, nothing.
I swear, the efforts of VGCharts and Nexgenwars to make up projected/forecast/estimated sales numbers have resulted in so much misinformation around the web. The idea that their speculative numbers are being trumpeted as fact on an ongoing basis is just ridiculous. NPD data and official company statements are the only true numbers, people.- Mogwlaii, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3VG Charts data is based on NPD / company figures I believe...
"VG Charts is the first website of its kind to provide a comprehensive analysis of the worldwide videogame market via a variety of research techniques; including interviews with publishers, developers, analysts, retailers and distributors, historical data fitting and analysis of sell-through information. VG Charts believes that by adopting a multifaceted approach, we can present information that is as unbiased, accurate and as complete as possible.
In preparing its research, VG Charts relies on the following methods:
Industry Interviews
VG Charts relies on an extensive base of industry contacts in videogame development, publishing, and distribution. By working closely with these sources we aim to obtain information from the sources closest to the markets as things are happening.
Analysis of Sell-Through Data
VG Charts analyzes sell-through data from a variety of different sources for Japan, the US, Europe, and rest of the world markets. VG Charts has one primary concern with regard to data collection services: the reliability of market data from any data service is subject to interpretation, and VG Charts verifies the accuracy of sell-through data by conducting interviews with industry executives and competing sell-through services, if available. By adjusting sell-through data to reflect industry feedback, we can create detailed analyses of market trends and provide accurate market statistics and projections.
Extensive Worldwide Database
Throughout its 5-year history, VG Charts has compiled a comprehensive database, including historical sales data and country-specific analyses which is instrumental in our approach to analysing and understanding the latest data that is made available.
We hope you enjoy using the site. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us."
http://www.vgcharts.org/welcome.php - zander106, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes, they do use NPD numbers, but since NPD numbers for January have not been released yet and will not be released until this upcoming Thursday, I have to doubt the veracity of their claims. I don't believe "industry interviews" and unspecified "sell-through data" are very reliable sources, either.
I grant that VGCharts.org makes a far better stab at getting decent numbers than Nexgenwars, but I think that they should be much more up front as to how they reach their estimates, i.e. provide ongoing detail on *which* data from *which* source justifies their current estimates. They should also timestamp their front page estimates to be more clear about when the estimate was updated.

- diggapleeeze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I added to their coffers yesterday. Walked in to Target and there were about 4 of them sitting behind a glass case. I wasn't intending on buying one, but there they were and no one was clamoring for them. I knew I would eventually get one and decided to do it then since they were available.
- aurorous, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Just 3 years ago with the lackluster showing of the gamecube and imminent launch of the PSP every Nintendo hater in the world predicted that Nintendo would soon follow Sega out of the hardware business.
All reports indicate that Nintendo is delivering systems and they're selling out instantly. Far cry from the 360 last year, we had a couple of million right at the start and almost nothing for the next 6 months. On the other hand Sony has got to be worried, the very instant they fixed their production problems they met their demand. They still aren't producing the same numbers as Nintendo by anyones reckoning they're should not be PS3 systems sitting on the shelf unsold at this point.
Also another thing that no one is noticing is DS's are almost as hard to find as Wii's. Go ahead and try to find some place selling a DS online right now. you *might* be able to find the pink one but the other colors are out of stock everywhere. And the DS has been impossible to find in japan for well over a year selling between 100,000 to 300,000 units every single week. The DS is more popular world wide right now than it was at launch.
both Wii's and DS's selling so well retailers can't keep them on the shelves... a few more months of this and Nintendo might just end up ruling the video game world... AGAIN!- WillyWonka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was looking for a Pink DS here for over a month. The other day we finally found one and snapped it up on the spot.

btw, just got my Wii, stood in the cold for 1.5 hours.- TheTacoBellDog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So . . . you come here just to tell us that you don't believe any of the facts? Click the title at the top of the page to see the full, detailed article that says everything . . .
- theboozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I ebayed the ***** out of my Wii and I'm proud of it. Long live the Wii, and long live my reign as supreme Wii bowling commander.
- ChineseRoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like someone said (I forgot who) never underestimate Nintendo. They've been in this industry for a long time and, although it may not look it, they know what they're doing. I'm glad Nintendo has a success on their hands, though I still cant find a Wii anywhere.
- icehawk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well maybe as the wii is doing so well its about time Nintendo made some more. So people who haven't got one already can get one goddamn it.
- joey368, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Here's the rankings for home counsles by the end of the year:
1. Xbox 360
2. Wii
3. Playstation 3 - zionad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the sellouts are definitely real. I can't find one anywhere :(
- TheTacoBellDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My friends and I were playing a Wii and it was more fun than I thought. I can see why the sales are good. Only game I didn't like was "Red Steel". In single player it is fine. But multiplayer the graphics are horrible, and the screen gets shrunk so small (four players) that you have to just barely move the remote to stop the guy from spinning like crazy.
- tanawts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The reason none of you can find a Wii is because retailers are playing games now. Target, Toy's R us, BestBuy etc. Anyone who wants a Wii has a good chance of getting one. All you have to do is show up earily to one of these retailers on a Sunday. All of these places have been hording Wii's and hiding them back stage so that they can make people wait out in the cold on Sundays.
- TDR25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I honestly don't see what the big deal is. Everyone knows by now that the Wii is a good if not great system, so why is it shocking that at $250+, it's not selling 4.5 mil or more? I'm sure several million people own a new computer, a new car, a new refrigerator, so why should this be shocking?
