PSA: Dreamcast.com turned into phishing scam
joystiq.com — Japanese news site Mainichi has confirmed that dreamcast.com is no longer owned by Sega and is using the official Dreamcast and company logos illegally. As we wait for further information, please do not submit any personal information to dreamcast.com.

- BESTenemy, on 03/11/2008, -0/+118Shame on us. We had a Dreamcast anniversary article here on digg. We helped it spread.
- Fuzzyslippers, on 03/11/2008, -2/+40Hack the ***** outta the site.
- th2edrrfs, on 03/11/2008, -0/+21I agree. It's times like this I wish I had those skills. Assholes.
They are destroying a part of my childhood!- bs0l, on 03/11/2008, -0/+23Damn those time travelling bastards.

- Nitesmoke, on 03/11/2008, -0/+19Yep, and the article stated that if you went to the website and filled out your info, they would register you for some cool Dreamcast stuff or something. I wonder how many people went there and gave their info?
- Fuzzyslippers, on 03/11/2008, -2/+40Hack the ***** outta the site.
- asskey, on 03/11/2008, -4/+21It's a trap!
- STARTSOMETHING, on 03/11/2008, -0/+19What are they planning on doing with all our serial numbers?
- OaklandNative, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcode_Battler
- GOVATENT, on 03/11/2008, -0/+30What makes it really funny is that someone posted whois information on the first article saying the site was not owned by sega and this was a scam. He got dug down. Now people are like "its funny how we had the article on digg". I am a die hard sega fan, but i don't see them doing anything anytime soon if ever again. (9/9/09 unless i am crazy)
- Philbert, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1that wasn't the first article, that came very soon after. This is the original

- encrypteduser, on 03/11/2008, -0/+10Holy crap! They are hosted by my ISP! Reported.
- apochcrypha, on 03/11/2008, -18/+4This is why Digg censorship is a BAD thing. Kevin Rose should get rid of the idea of "digging down people", where the default -4 diggs and fewer censors users. It's against freedom of speech. Only spam and insults should be blocked, like set a limit at -30 diggs.
- Nerfdude, on 03/11/2008, -2/+7let's see if you go below that threshold.
- chrismag1979, on 03/11/2008, -0/+20It only cost ten bucks to retain its ownership dammit SEGA

For those who dont know the Dreamcast Homebrew scene has seen a major resurgence over the past few days with a new full speed Genesis emulator, a 28 Game retro game compilation, a monkey ball clone and the main english speaking news site for the Dreamcast Scene is back at http://dreamcast.dcemu.co.uk/ - irondragons, on 03/11/2008, -22/+2What did you actually expect, anyway?

- offspring06, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1Is 7 inches too large for these discounts?
- nizam, on 03/11/2008, -3/+16if this is true, then that means you should be able to put in a fake number for the serial number, since they won't have anyway of confirming it if it is not official. can't test this right now because the service is down at the moment.
- FatLoser, on 03/11/2008, -12/+6"if this is true, then that means you should be able to put in a fake number for the serial number"

- calvinw, on 03/11/2008, -29/+1ouch.. good luck guy. best wishes.
- STARTSOMETHING, on 03/11/2008, -1/+35No, thats why you gave them your social security number.
- rowlodge, on 03/11/2008, -10/+1i would cancel that right now.
- LuckyASN, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4Do you know where I can find some sailors?
- offspring06, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1Hey mister, you wanna play.
- diulei, on 03/11/2008, -3/+130Strange that Sega would let this domain go. I know business isn't remotely as good as it was in the 80s and 90s, but still...
- branjb, on 03/11/2008, -9/+1They probably sold it for a fine lump of money.
- B3000, on 03/11/2008, -1/+35Actually, although they are now just a ***** software company and a shadow of their former greatness, I believe they are much more financially stable than they were in the 90s. During the late 90s I remember reading that they were losing more money than some Japanese dairy company that had accidentally poisoned 50,000 school children.
- danielsan1701, on 03/11/2008, -1/+11Abraham Lincoln sold poison milk to schoolchildren.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+10I can go for some malk right now.

- haxderek, on 03/11/2008, -2/+27I loved the powerstone games
- borez, on 03/11/2008, -0/+23I miss my dreamcast
- CATSCEO, on 03/11/2008, -4/+22HA HA!
- LordSkywalker, on 03/11/2008, -2/+223Why would Sega let that domain go in the first place?
- onefix, on 03/11/2008, -0/+16Because they actually had no intent of ever using it again. I love my Dreamcast, but it's obvious that Sega is out of the console hardware market for good. Not to mention, the thing that has been keeping the Dreamcast alive is arguably what killed its commercial potential (the ability to play burned CDs). Not that it's the only thing that killed the Dreamcast. Electronic Arts dropping Sega probably didn't help either.
To be honest, I don't think Sega really wants to relive that period in their life and if they ever made a move towards reviving their console division then you can bet that Nintendo would kill their crossover titles in no time.- sexybobo, on 03/11/2008, -2/+13so they couldent affored the $100 for owning the domain for 10 more years instead they sold it to a fishing company to get their fans information stollen?
- onefix, on 03/11/2008, -0/+9I'm sure it's actually simpler than that. There is probably simply no one with the authority to pay out the money that cares about that product or division anymore. If it were anyone's job to renew the domain it was probably someone in Sega's console division ... who is probably long since gone. The site would have simply lapsed and become free for anyone to purchase.
- Mike89, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2lmao, fishing company.
- sexybobo, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1phishing you know what i meant i left of the h and spell check changed it to fishing
- sexybobo, on 03/11/2008, -2/+13so they couldent affored the $100 for owning the domain for 10 more years instead they sold it to a fishing company to get their fans information stollen?
- MacTyler, on 03/11/2008, -3/+3dude, like who want's to pay $10 bucks a year for something like that unimportant?
- hexydes, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1They should have just given it to someone at DCEmu. I know they are (indirectly, through the actions of some of their community) partly the reason Dreamcast didn't work out, but none the less, they have been ridiculously active with the Dreamcast, even years after Sega 86'd the whole thing. At the very least, it would be better for Sega's past and present customers to have the site go to something like that, rather than a phishing scam...
- onefix, on 03/11/2008, -0/+16Because they actually had no intent of ever using it again. I love my Dreamcast, but it's obvious that Sega is out of the console hardware market for good. - GregIsLegend, on 03/11/2008, -3/+1Same here!
I saw it on my iphone while I was out and was excited to register when i got home thinking us devoted dreamcast fans would get something special...
- GregIsLegend, on 03/11/2008, -3/+1Same here!
- Link459, on 03/11/2008, -2/+8Woooooooow... That sure does suck.
- UtahApocalyse, on 03/11/2008, -1/+59Funny how on digg over the weekend everyine was excited at the 10th anniversary changes the site made LMAO bet they are not so happy now.
- asskey, on 03/11/2008, -0/+32I got lucky, I was totally about to "register" and the Digg effect knocked down their sign-up page and saved my ass.
- Matt2k, on 03/11/2008, -0/+10Same! And I've been retrying it about twice a day too
- srietscha, on 03/11/2008, -0/+0Same here. I guess I can delete the reminder e-mail I sent myself...
- Fragalishus, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Yeah I dugg it since it was down just to go back later. Guess I'll go back and bury it. Was digging around in my old CD rack and found the Web Browser 2.0 disk, still wrapped. I may hook it up and play a few rounds of Soul Kalibur (only game I ever bought before they went belly up, was too pissed at the time to pick up any others).

- Tyfon, on 03/11/2008, -2/+10OH SNAP
- Kajico, on 03/11/2008, -0/+18The site has been suspended for some time, which is a good thing since it prevented more Dreamcast fanboys (me included) from falling for this. I guess the lack of bandwidth should have been an indication that some thing wasn't right.
- offspring06, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1Yeah that saved me from whatever scam they have cooking. How dare they do this to us Dreamcast fanboys.
- bigp3rm, on 03/11/2008, -3/+12Many lulz..
- blorguehad, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5Damn thats a good one. Tricky clown peepee.

- jedinate, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1I was just looking for that article to post here. thanks for finding it 1st. Very tricky thing they are doing, I came close to falling for it.
- mocisme, on 03/11/2008, -0/+8yea... i was gonna check it out when that was posted, but my procrastination has saved the day!
- BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -12/+5After I realized it was a scam for a while I had a sudden memory of them NEVER owning that domain. My old memories could be corrupted but if I remember correctly Dreamcast was unfortunately not quite unique enough and had already been registered before Sega made the console.
But as far as the problem goes, you can mostly thank Kotaku for this. All the forums talking about it had already figured out it was a scam and Kotaku goes ahead and begs everyone to submit their info. That's called irresponsible journalism, and Kotaku needs to be taken down a few notches because of it.- ers35, on 03/11/2008, -1/+11Everyone makes mistakes. It's not like it was their intention to get people to submit their information to a phishing site.
- digitallysick, on 03/11/2008, -9/+4wtf *****
- 4d669, on 03/11/2008, -5/+3oh lawd
- coppyrightmind, on 03/11/2008, -0/+60Good thing the site went down before I could register. Thank you Digg effect.
- Nudar, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1Yeah I was all set to sign up for an email account. I wouldn't have given any personal info though so I'd be safe either way.
- fiskintl, on 03/11/2008, -1/+2was it digg? or the almighy intervention of the flying spaghetti monster? you tell me.
- ghostrc, on 03/11/2008, -0/+27lol that dude on Kotaku was all excited
- NextGenXbox, on 03/11/2008, -3/+33Why would sega not renew the domain? It costs $10 a ***** year!!! WTF? -- Anyways, they will probably sue/contact domain company and they'll get the domain back.
- twiztidsinz, on 03/11/2008, -1/+4because people pounce on expired domains like that... you let it expire for a second and its gone.
- Po0py, on 03/11/2008, -0/+9A lot of the big gaming blogs were roped into this as well they had links on their blogs directing to dreamcast.com along with speculation that this might be a sign that sega might have something under wraps for the 10th anniversery. But alas...
Fail.- baldduck, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4Epic Fail, dude.
- ScreamOn, on 03/11/2008, -0/+9That pretty much dashed my dreams of a dreamcast revival
- trainer, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1I felt the same way :(
- Wootstapler, on 03/11/2008, -5/+2What a douche move...wow.
- doshindude, on 03/11/2008, -0/+9WE'VE BEEN HAD!
- cliffyboro, on 03/11/2008, -1/+18Fantastic scam!
- podcastalpha, on 03/11/2008, -5/+1The Whois report looks like sega owns it as it points to the sega.co.jp email addresses.
- idleminded, on 03/11/2008, -0/+9First phishing scam I've ever fallen for. Good thing I use different passwords.
- cadmiumpaint, on 03/11/2008, -3/+46I guess Sega can't afford the $8.99 to renew the domain? damn, tough times indeed
- whiteguysamurai, on 03/11/2008, -1/+17they messed with my beautiful sega?
There will be blood!!- FreddieD, on 03/11/2008, -1/+9I'VE ABANDONED MY SEGA!
I'VE ABANDONED MY DREAMCAST!- FreddieD, on 03/11/2008, -6/+1That joke was funnier in my head than it was on my monitor. Digg it down please.
- Rodalli, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1LOL! Thank you for that.
- Matteos, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3They drank your milkshake.

- hadak, on 03/11/2008, -0/+24*****. I just registered there. Goddammit.
- hobbes84k, on 03/11/2008, -0/+9I'm just thankful that the website was down due to high volumes by the time that I found it on Digg.
- twiztidsinz, on 03/11/2008, -2/+2sounds alot like what happened to Shareaza.com
- mluu921, on 03/11/2008, -2/+2wow that sure does suck for the people that reg. but what can they do with a system's serial number?
- RazorEye, on 03/11/2008, -6/+158I believe this is in order, yes?

- likwidfuzion, on 03/11/2008, -7/+3I guess it is a blessing not to have a Dreamcast.
- HellaBAD, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1Thank god my Dreamcast is half-way around the world from me right now, otherwise I would have been suckered in by this too...
- JustinHopewell, on 03/11/2008, -1/+36For once, being stoned and too lazy to do something as simple as turn my dreamcast upside down to find a serial number has worked out for me! Praise be Marijuana!
- eazyyweeezy, on 03/11/2008, -0/+0yerrr boi! i lke ya style lol
- gr00vy, on 03/11/2008, -1/+6Jesus H Christ on a pogo stick. Is there no one in Sega that has half a freaking brain. There are many fans sites out there that would have gladly taken the name. You let it lapse?!?
- Pazz, on 03/11/2008, -3/+2Perhaps the final kick in the butt for dreamcast owners ?
- ryanchapelle, on 03/11/2008, -1/+8*****. I fell for it like the stupid DC fanboy that I am. Anyone remember what info they asked for other than email/pass and serial #?
- punisher18, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2no clue other than the console serial number and pass/email , but ***** i wonder if i did answer something like *hey dumbass whats your social security number ?* :| im epically pissed off.
- ALink2ThePast, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1That's all that they asked for thankfully. I'm lucky, I'm on spring break and left my DC at school so I couldn't sign up w/o my serial number. Good thing they found out before I got back. It looks like they couldn't do much more than spam you with the info you gave though.
- istatic, on 03/11/2008, -2/+2I laughed out loud when I saw this article... remembering how excited people were that Sega was finally showing an interest in Dreamcast again. Then again, I'm pretty high.
