Payback for GP2X is the first handheld game with HDR lighting
apex-designs.net — Apex designs has released a status report on what they have improved on the gp2x version of their game payback. Among the many upgrades due to the raw system power the gp2x offers, one was HDR lighting, which up until now was non existent on handheld games. Payback is available to buy now, or download the huge demo in the gp2x.de archives.

- pwris16, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Indeed.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -14/+7Death Jr. 2 to feature HDR lighting?!
http://tech.netscape.com/story/2006/08/14/death-jr-2-to-feature-hdr-lighting/
Chris Carla commented:Well, we used Renderware on our first game on PSP, and it wasn't exactly perfectly tuned for PSP. After we removed it for [Death Jr. 2], we found our framerates hit 90fps... before we knew it, thanks to our fantastic tech staff, we had light blooms, High Dynamic Range lighting, and lots of other lighting and frame buffer effe (75 days ago)- Sagags, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1thats pretty stupid that you link to net scape, if you didnt know its somewhat of a digg rival. I bet you work for net scape you trader!
- Ortwin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Well, Payback still beat it. ;)
- Reno582, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Death Jr. 2 hasn't been released yet but yep it uses software-based HDR and looks pretty cool.
- FazzMunkle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Sagags, no it isn't. If it's a good article who the hell cares where it's from? It's not like Digg and Digg fans are at war with Netscape... I think you're taking this "rivalry" too far.
As to the GP2X: Damn, now I'm definitely getting one. :D - boomerxl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I just can't let this one pass.
Sorry Sagags, the word you were looking for is traitor.
Unless you meant to imply that he exchanges goods and services for cash or barter, in which case, my bad.
- Gus1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Link to demo:
http://www.apex-designs.net/payback_demo.html - popebadass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The game is quite fun, and there are some cool lighting effects. For example, if your in a shadowed area, and theres a really brightly light area next to you, the lit area is almost washed out, but when you move into it things fade into better visibility as your "eyes" adjust.
- Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why are they comparing it to the GBA?
- popebadass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5In one iteration payback was a GBA game, although it was originally an amiga game.
- AllenHSmilden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because they used the gba version's code since they both use the arm cpu. its in the article.
- pwris16, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Because Payback was also released on the GBA. Simple enough to understand, is it not?
- Sp1k3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I really want a GP2X, I think I might invest in one of these puppies for Christmas, Yummmmy a fully programmable GNU/Linux-based portable console!
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Wow, and not a single mention of WTF a GP2X is. A toaster? A portable Super Famicon? A fully programmable GNU/Linux-based portable console?
- DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yes, it's a f'ing toaster you play games on. What do you _think_ it is?
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I've never heard of this GP2X thing before either. Who makes it?
- DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5http://www.gp2x.com/product/product.asp?part=00
- imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10So have you guys never heard of Google, or are you just playing dumb?
- aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1maybe they're playing dead.

and not doing a very good job of it.
- N1XUK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Payback on my GBA is slow and jerky, same cart in my DS runs alot better, just wish a new DS version would be made!
- Vimacs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just get it for gp2x and play it with sweet fps and gfx:-)
- DarkJosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember interviewing Apex back when they were going to put the game on GBA. It was pretty impressive but it looks like they have made it much more impressive since then.
- pwris16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't stop playing the demo, Insane tank rampages, drawing me back in!
- Almadiel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Some PSP games have HDR. Particularly nice in Wipeout, you see it a lot when you exit tunnels. This isn't new.
- Vimacs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Bloom is NOT hdr.
- DarkAoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Payback demo is excellent, excellent FPS, effects, and HDR really helps. Another level compared to the GBA version, this one really IS another thing. The music is excellent, sometimes I just hear the music while in the bus
- xenonflash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love my GP2X. Warm, open-source, old-school goodness.
