Spore Hands-on: Hour w/ Civ Phase and Galactic End-game

shacknews.com — It was somewhere between ordering my army of blue-blooded Max Rebo soldiers to crush an enemy civilization, and conquering the galaxy from the comfort of a spaceship that resembled a four post bed, when I realized they had pulled it off. Spore is great.

    • quaunaut, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1If your computer had the power to run that game at a decent resolution, your video card probably has driver-run anti-aliasing. Look into your video drivers, should be very quick to find. Also has anisotropic(sp?) filtering usually.

      • HaMMeReD, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2You can create whatever you want, you just can't paint it however you want, which is a major downfall for modelling a lot of "characters". You could probably make a jar-jar very easily, but some of the more advanced races may not come out looking properly.

        If they allowed you to do some painting to the characters it would allow for far greater level of detail.

The overall impression that I get is one of simple and repetitive gameplay layered over very cool and visually impressive creatures and worlds.

      I think I'll get it, but only because StarCraft 2, HL2:Episode 3, and Diablo 3 seem so far away.

      Though, that's probably not going to stop me from getting it... I probably won't get it at launch, though.

      2) All the alien creatures that appear in the game are other players creations, so in a sense, it is multiplayer. In the general sense though, no, not as far as I am aware.

  • DulcetTone, on 07/19/2008, -5/+0Wright has always made whimsical, BAD games. Black and White, for instance. Cute, but is the game about the people, the hand, or the pet? It's as though a committee designed that game. Or a woman.

    And MOUSE GESTURES? WTF was that about? It advanced gameplay not at all, and seemed to be included simply to be some UI wankster flourish so he could claim to have done something first.

    I still hate the overly restrictive DRM crap that they have on this game and may keep me from buying this game (but probably not).

    Does anyone else thnik that one hour is WAY too short to get any kind of feel for a game? Espically an MMO type game. Just imagine what people would have thought of WoW if they got to play as a level 2 Orc Rogue for 20 minutes, and then were dropped into AB as a level 70 Human Warlock.

Your not going to be seeing people in spore fighting over phat lootz and BG points especially since your not playing against other people.

    Yeah, my loss, etc etc. But I see it the other way around: eventually these "protection" schemes will become so intrusive, that I'm better off spending my money elsewhere, starting now. Luckily for me, I can be entertained without having to suck down on someone's awful marketing decisions.
