The 100 Lamest Game-Industry Clichés
gamesradar.com — If you spend a lot of time reading game reviews, you might have started to notice that they all read, well... kind of same-y. And it doesn't help matters that there's a whole unwritten vocabulary of clich és that's spread across the entire industry, including the press and the companies themselves. Here are a few you may have noticed.
- 693 diggs
- digg it
- Xionn, on 07/22/2008, -4/+73All in all, I think that that list was indeed quite lame.
- floppyparty, on 07/23/2008, -0/+10It was an evolution in lameness.
- Best360, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Made me want to snap my monitor in half just reading it.
- mooseofshadows, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1That might not be so bad, except that is was also awkwardly long.
- iRaqtv, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1Yeah, this was stupid enough for me to take the time to make a comment. I don't know why this was written.
- garrettsdiggs, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1that was awful. it's like the guy had two weeks of absolutely nothing to do, so he trolled game reviews for common phrases (you know, the kind everyone uses daily to transition to a new idea in conversation) and just tried to say something funny about them
the internet needs to invent a stronger word for fail... it just doesn't cut it here (cliche! you see what i did there??)
- floppyparty, on 07/23/2008, -0/+10It was an evolution in lameness.
- bwhite4815, on 07/22/2008, -4/+65100? .. Way too long.
- bstockwell, on 07/23/2008, -3/+9Yeah, TLDR
- alperea, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7You must be a pretty pissed off guy to be able to write 100 of them! It's like comic book guy having a bad day.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Worst.... 100 list..... ever!
- dnields, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2So I'm not the only one who sees the paradox when a site that promotes "The First Podcast Designed NOT To Put You To Sleep" posts a an extremely exhausting 'Top 100' list.
- sysop073, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1When I saw the title I thought that must be a joke, I can't believe there are seriously 100 of them. I bet now we've exhausted Digg's capacity for lists though, there's no way we could have another list post anytime soon. Sigh
- kataztrophy, on 07/23/2008, -9/+6Did the world really need another top 100 of anything? Top 10 would get the point across just fine.
- gaberhart, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9Appropriately several of their list entries are as cliched as the cliches they're attacking, but they make some decent points. A lot of game reviewing today has basically become madlibs.
- MetalGear7, on 07/23/2008, -2/+26HOLY ***** I'VE SEEN 5 articles with lists in the past minute Jesus Christ are diggers ***** for lists
- salvadorwii, on 07/23/2008, -0/+22This must be your first day, welcome to digg
- revjustin2, on 07/23/2008, -0/+26I hear you. It's one of the top ten reasons why I hate digg.
- destron, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4Lists are the new web 2.0 :P
- CrazyDEX, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5yeah really... other popular digg topics for the newb - Ron Paul, Boobs, Huffington Post articles, Zero Punctuation/Yahtzee game reviews, Cracked (same as top X whatevers), reedit/4chan reposts.
Welcome and enjoy- VelvetoneFusion, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Don't forget every xkcd strip and linux anything update.
- Nyvhek, on 07/24/2008, -0/+0Why don't you make a list of the lists you saw on digg?
- ConNERD, on 07/23/2008, -4/+13tl;dr
- KaiSe7eN, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3Funny thing about number 2 and getting frustrated is that back in the day my friend and I were playing Trickstyle for Dreamcast, and spent hours upon hours playing one night, so at about 4 in the morning we couldn't decide whose turn it was so we started choking each other.
- Tallon29, on 07/23/2008, -2/+23 14. Worth a rental - No. No, it isn't. This is incredibly lazy reviewer shorthand for "Well, parts of it were fun, but I wouldn't ever pay actual money for it. You, however, don't have the option of playing it for free, so I guess renting it is the next best thing."
That was stupid. There are plenty of games I've played that were worth $5, but not $50. - icantdenythis, on 07/23/2008, -3/+18I'd put that article on a list of the "lamest" articles I've seen on digg.
buried. - Cuchanu, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Well in game reviewers defense so many games are clones so how can they be expected to write a new and exiting review for every sup-par or seen it before game that comes out.
PS I couldn't get past the first page. Instead of 'top 100 game cliches' it should have been called 'EVERY game cliche ever'. - revjustin2, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Having a list of 100 cliches found in game reviews pretty much makes it impossible to write anything that isn't in a language you just made up for the review. Let's face it kids, there are like 10 general kinds of video games (and I am being generous there). It's not like reviewers have a lot to write about in this industry anyway.
- iDoraemon, on 07/23/2008, -1/+810. Turn the lights down and the sound up - Ooh, this game is spooky. Better damage your eyes and annoy the neighbors if you want to fully appreciate it.
That's dumb. Watching/reading in the dark for long periods of times does not permanently damage the eyes. That's a myth. It just strains the eyes. - c010rb1indusa, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2There's only so many things you can say about a game, and since so many games are about imitation then innovation (see American Capitalism), this list is useless nit picking list of some guy who has gotten tired of reading game reviews. If you don't like it, play the god damn game yourself.
- Rocco03, on 07/23/2008, -3/+3"If you spend a lot of time reading game reviews, you might have started to notice that they all read, well... kind of same-y. From the rambling screeds of the most pretentious critics..."
*cough*pennyarcade*cough*- nevetssav, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1Funny, they don't mention reading articles about video game trends or tendencies (though I sure as hell didn't read the whole thing).
- zjbird, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4They need to make a "100 lamest attempts to make a top 100 on digg" list...
- rexcom, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5101 - Video Game Lists
- draux, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1that was 100
- rexcom, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1You actually clicked the link to this horrible article?
- draux, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Yup, thought it might be a good idea to read it before I comment.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2You read the article before commenting on the half of the time misleading title? What kind of a Digger are you?
- draux, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1that was 100
- Adv1s, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4Well done for inserting "top [insert number] lists" right in at the end of the article you bastards.
- mrelusive, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2How come nobody uses a thumbnail image from GamesRadar that actually has to do with the story?
- folkher, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1If your going to design an ultra lame list like this, shouldn't you just stop at 15? Isn't anything above that just wasted effort since nobody is going to read it anyway?
- Cyber_Akuma, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1I guess they figured why be lame with a top 10-15 list when they can be super-lame with a top 100 list? Whiney, pointless, nitpicking articles like this seriously reflect bad on any non-major-corporate review site.
- xtinamo, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2Worth a rent is a considerably accurate review of a lot of games. The guy needed 100 attempts to make a so-so top 10 list.
- nellshini, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1What's with all the crappy gamesradar articles popping up all of a sudden?
- jaynemother, on 07/23/2008, -1/+51 most nitpicking article I've read in recent memory.
- Tyrghast, on 07/23/2008, -3/+4101 - That Games Radar is a competent game review website.
- CtznBomberman, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4102 - That Tyrghast understands what "cliche" means.
- deezeejoey, on 07/23/2008, -1/+7really stupid.
- bobsander87, on 07/23/2008, -2/+5This article is pretty lame itself
- Kohaxx, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3Anyone who watches G4 for 10 minutes could come up with this list. The "lameness" involved in the culture surrounding selecting video games just gets worse every year.
- pitchblack16, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4yup 100 is definitely too long, on a side note ummm who cares about terms used in game reviews?
- AdamFromMyspace, on 07/23/2008, -1/+6Reading this reminded me of a writer trying really hard to be funny like a cracked.com writer (some of the pictures were even mildly amusing), but overall failing miserably, since the wit just wasn't there.
- scoottie, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4after about #5 the article got too boring to read
- Seemefearme, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3Super lame article. Buried.
- gs68, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1101. (insert arcade-style game here) is too short--it's "only" 1 hour long.
- ortucis, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Gamespot is the firm believer in these chliches. I like IGN (PC) game reviews. True and they pretty much tell you that the game is crap (for eg. 3.5 rating for ALone in the Dark) instead of Gamespots ***** 7+ rating on every ***** game whose publisher doesn't advertise on their site. I like the user reviews section on Gamespot but these days even that is ***** full of fanboys and'fake' reviews up to the brim.
- mlvassallo, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2I've gotten to number 6 (Why it doesn't go backwards I do not know... isn't that how "Top Lists" are suppose to go) and I've stopped reading. This is really the most uninteresting thing that has something to do with video games that I have ever seen in my life.
- Mandujano, on 07/23/2008, -1/+0well, all in all, i read the whole list.. skipping the lame items, i read only like 20
- bobartig, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7"Shigeru Miyamoto is not 'Shigsy'...".
Of course not. He's "Shiggy!" - LeviTheSmith, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1About the first picture in the article.. That does happen when bored.. I have done it many times with a PS2 cord
- F9Phoenix, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2Games Radar is the ultimate enthusiast site cliche.
- NathanielJ, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1So basically GamesRadar wants reviewers to give a score (other than 7/10) to the game and not say anything about it?
- FredFredrickson, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1The list is way too long - the guy should have broken it down and made them into several blog posts to use for the next few months.
It wasn't all bad though - there is a lot of truth to some of the things I read in the first 10. I guess it's got the whole attention span thing working against it. - enderwiggen16, on 07/23/2008, -3/+2Am I the only one who enjoyed this article? It was very exaggerated, but that's what made it funny. The WW2 image was hilarious.
- Halgy, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2I guess this guy doesn't like any metaphor or interesting language. Doubleplus good article.
- BufordT, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1Before they go criticizing others, maybe they should work on their website a little. That has to be one of the worst layout and look for a website I have ever seen. I thought my Adblock Plus was turned off until I noticed that all of the ***** on the sides and at the bottom was actually links to other content on their site.
- Coffeedemon, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4You'll never experience controller snapping frustration? If only because they haven't made a game as hard as the original Megaman or Ninja Gaiden in many moons. I actualy did snap a controller in half playing those on the NES. That leads me to another point... they don't make controllers the way they used to either. If you bent it back to "straight" the damn thing still worked.
- BradOFarrell, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2This is a part of gaming culture that's not worthy of documentation. "All-in-all" being used as a preface for a summary? Seriously? Meh.
- AmericanGunner, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1so were suppose to play cutting edge games with all the lights on and normal volume so i cant hear the dialogue when the ac turns on?
- Hoogs, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2How are these even clichés? I mean, there's 100 of them, so they can't be THAT overused. And what's wrong with using them? I don't expect video game reviews to be works of art. They just need to get the point across, and these phrases do just that.
- doshindude, on 07/23/2008, -1/+16 pages? insta-bury.
- 33PercentGod, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Dugg a trillion times for number 13 on the list.
- mrtiddles, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1That was rather irritating, tbh.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2I coulden't get through the first page, this article felt like somebody trying to cash-in on trying to get fame by thinking they are original for simply hating on something most others do.
Around the "worth a rental" part it felt like the person writing this drivel was simply trying to complain about any possible sentance you might see in a review. I wonder if they were foaming at the mouth while writing this. -
