The best third-party light saber fight... ever. watch!
youtube.com — Short (5 minute) clip of a home-made light saber battle. The special effects are almost as well-done as anything Lucas could produce.

star wars sux. - MaddDog, on 10/12/2007, -13/+88Star Wars kid was the best third party light sabre fight! Even if he only fought imaginary opponents.
- GreenLantern33, on 10/12/2007, -58/+13This is the third time I've seen this on the front page and I still don't give a *****.
- themarkshow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48It looks AS good as lucas because he WORKED for lucas arts. ( Ryan that is)
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16yeah actually i was there when this was released on theforce.net fan films. there are alot of good fan films for star wars on the site, i would recommend them to all.
the one guy is known to clone himself in his videos, that is why at the end, it was like that. those guys were the top guys making fan films at theforce.net too so they dueled each other. came out very nice. this video came out around episode 1 or 2 between there. - choicetoes, on 10/12/2007, -60/+92http://digg.com/videos_comedy/Star_Wars_Fan_Video_Saber_Duel
Digg the original. Use the search. Submitting duplicate stories is the triumph of ego over concise content.
Oh, and digg me down because you just hate it when people point out how lame it is that we're always repeating ourselves here on digg. - mhanley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48Dugg your original as well. But, the point is, once a story has moved off the first few pages of "upcoming" stories, it is likely dead. People who digg through the upcoming stories probably only get to look at the first few pages, and stories get submitted at such an incredible rate, it is very easy to "miss" a good story. Digg is about timing as much as anything else, so given the current design, it is inevitable that some "good" stories get overlooked on the first (or second, or third) submission, but then make it to the homepage on a later submission, because maybe the timing was more favorable. Also, keep in mind, not all Diggers have been around for as long as you, so your dupe from two months ago may be an awesome new find for a new Digg user.

digg is getting old. i think - choicetoes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Mhanley,
I understand your points, but if taken to the logical conclusion, we'd recycle all our content every week (or every day), which is certainly not desirable. A big part of why stories don't make the front page is because there are so many duplicates submitted by people who just want to promote themselves.
Also, for every story that's a dupe on the front page, that means that one more that potentially isn't a dupe does not hit the front page. Dupes are definitely not good for digg, even if they are cool (which this is!).
A better explanation is here:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Digg_Users_Stop_Double_Posting
And a proposed solution:
http://digg.com/design/Digg_Duplication_Solution_Linking_Alternative_Sources_To_Original_Post - TrevorBradley, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Actually, if stuff got recycled every week, it would stop getting dugg.
Likewise, if stuff is still cool but lost from the collective memory, it will get re-dugg.
There are few enough people bitching about it to bother changing the system. If the system needed to be changed, there would be more people bitching about it.
Face it.. digg's system is the worst possible, except for all the other possibilities.
It's the Invisible Hand at work here folks. - mhanley, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2choicetoes,
I agree with you, in that the duping is a more chronic problem. I am not sure the proposed solution of allowing users to post additional sources is a good solution. Perhaps the submission logic needs to be tightened to better prevent duplicates, or encourage submitters of dupe stories to Digg the original rather than post a duplicate. Maybe the logic needs to be changed to allow older upcoming stores to "bubble" higher up in the list if they get Dugg out of obscurity (e.g., if an older upcoming story gets Dugg, it rises higher in the list)? I don't know what the solution is, but given the current design, it is virtually impossible to catch all the good stories from the upcoming stories, and therefore, sometimes a dupe does make it to the homepage, and that's not necessarily a bad (completely) thing. - Netmindstorm, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5http://digg.com/videos_comedy/Star_Wars_Fan_Video_Saber_Duel

I've noticed that it's only the galactically stupid people here at Digg who have a hard time figuring out how dupe stories appear on the site. For example, I get my story headlines from an RSS feed on my Google Personalized Search. Since I don't sit there and hit ***** refresh every 7 second to wait for new stories, I often miss stores, TONS of stories while I work throughout the day. Thank god for dupes as I can honestly say about 80% of the stories I catch on Digg ARE DUPES.
Now step away from Digg, get some sunlight on your transparent, clammy skin, and shut the ***** up. - MartinBob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I don't understand how someone can simply indicate that this story is a dupe and get their comment buried to such an extent.

- guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -41/+14Yay! Another Star Wars inspired light-saber fight movie.
a) There was more to Star Wars than the light-sabers.
b) Light-saber fighting is akin to sword fighting. You DON'T turn your back in sword fighting. You don't spin around. You don't fight with a backwards grip. You don't have one arm behind your back. You don't kick your opponent in the back. You STAB him in the back. It's battle, not ballet.- wild, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5There was more to Star Wars than lightsabers? Not that I cared about.
- jzulli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Let the kids be kids. Hell, when I was their age, I recorded video of myself fighting with a friend and I added light saber effects in After Effects. I bet a lot of Digg users have done so, too.
- Rabid_Llama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What are you talking about? There's spin moves in lightsaber fights all the time in the movies. I agree with you that there probably *shouldn't* be, but there are, and they look cool.
- Soapdish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It all depends on what type of sword fighting you use. There are many techniques - even just with a Katana.
Oh, and the video is nothing like Ballet. It's got much more in common with martial arts than dance. - The0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@ guytoronto
Who gives a *****? It's supposed to look cool, not be realistic. For ***** sake, their fighting with beams of light! They're only movies, both this and all the Star Wars movies, so ***** get over it.
And if anyone feels the urge to correct my description of lightsabers to be more accurate to the Star Wars movies, I think you have a date with some razor blades first. - raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4agree jzulli. i'm glad teens will always be teens and that these fellows are doing sw fan films which are healthy and surely a learning experience. its a good thing to see that now this kind of technology is at their hands.
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"You don't fight with a backwards grip." Not like was shown, indeed, but it's original if not realistic.
"You don't have one arm behind your back", blame fencing.
"Light-saber fighting is akin to sword fighting", hmm, they have no mass and an infinite number of effective cutting edges, but otherwise yes.
- zerocomm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30This was excellent and highly entertaining. Its funny that they put so much work into the special effects but walked around in XL tshirts and sweatpants though
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2And filmed it in somebody's basement...
- Soapdish, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Sweatpants? Didn't you notice Dorkman was wearing some really cool black jeans? /sarcasm
- raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11teens + lightsabers = danger! c'mon, two of them died and you keep on encouraging them! kids shouldn't have access to weapons!

- Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yeah, this is good :) I love his logo at the begining, very creative!
- Judgement, on 10/12/2007, -30/+41. Too much spinning
2. They are standing too close to each other
3. Poorly choreographed all-around.
Good for people messing around, but nothing very impressive here. Anybody can add a lightsaber effect to a video these days, it's the choreography that makes anything professional.
B-- over9000, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11Hey, I don't see you doing it.
- caseycoold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I did notice the weight of the lightsabers, which they didn't really pick up on until they made 1-3. They spin them around as though the light end of it had weight. Maybe it does? I dunno.
If you people don't care about starwars, why did you click here? Why did you post?
"It's battle, not ballet."
It's a movie, not a war. They are fighting with LIGHTSABERS!! Hello?
Over very entertaining. I'd like to see more of their stuff as they get better and better.
- steveTr, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1this is on the front page?
- danieldrehmer, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Why using that La Bamba song as bg?
- DNAspark99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Actually, I'd say 'Art of the Saber' is the 'best' one I've seen:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ipx5cU8kLBw- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3Bah, terrible writing though. Using flowery language is okay to some extent, overdoing as much as they did is not.
- slagzoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@interiot
The writing is from an old civil war letter, they didn't write it themselves. I personally think its perfect.
@DNAspark99
I was about to comment saying the same thing. - batmanjr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9If you actually read the credits and such the voice over is a letter written by a confederate solider to his family.
So this wasn't flowery language, this was almost verbatum real life.
edit: Slagzoo beat me to it. - shaka999, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1While I like the video the sabers didn't look quite right. They were to "solid" looking and the halo looked bad.
- rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But the fight scene in the Art of the Saber looked like a light saber fight should, it was choreographed better then some of the movie scenes and loads better then this one. This one just feels to fan-filmy. The tech behind it is solid, but it's uninspired and the choreography is just weak.
- doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yea, i liked art of the saber better too
- LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you have not seen the Art of The Saber yet I would recommend getting it from the original site. http://fxhome.com/cinema/info_cache/movieinfo479.html
Youtube messes up the quality of the work.
I like the Art of The Saber better too. - JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love the music they used - "Gortoz A Ran" (grab it from Black Hawk Down OST ) - I recommend to check the lyrics (traslated)!
- raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1looks like matrix vs star wars. very cool, though. i personally don't think it is better.
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I far prefer Art of the Saber - it has a storyline, a far superior environment, combatants who know what they're doing and characters.
- Ozymandias42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10While very well done, the light saber effect is not anything near what Lucas could produce. You'll notice that although the light sabers glow very brightly and let off huge flashes of light when they hit each other, nothing around them is affected. There's no glow of light saber on their clothes or on nearby objects, the flashes don't light anything else up. I'm not insulting them for it, I'm just saying that they don't have a hundred guys doing hundreds of hours of cleanup to add those touches that are a real pain and need to be done by hand.
Still, great job.- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13right, they dont have millions of dollars.
the dynamic of the fight itself, the choreography and execution are better than any thing i saw in episodes 1-3 - wonboodoo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7@earthtoandy
Watching paint dry is better than anything seen in episodes 1-3. - z0l0pht, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4earthtoandy: I totally agree. The choreography was excellent for a no-budget fan film. Hell, you barely see good hand-to-hand combat like that in ANY movies nowadays (the Kill Bills being exceptions)
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nothing beats watching Yoda kick ass with a light sabre.
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13right, they dont have millions of dollars.
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9way better than the crap that makes it into those movies with infinite budget
- jeff25624, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't know, that was more impressive than I would have thought during the opening seconds. Seen better, but still impressive for what I would assume are kids.
- Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I was dreading a Matrix Neo hand taunt thing at one point in the video. I'm glad people are over that.
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree - that was annoying even when Neo did it.
- coresnake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1star wars kid FTW
- buzzbeebara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If the rumours are true that Lucas is going to do a Star Wars tv series, its these kind of guys that can be hired to do the week to week lightsaber effects. And I found the choreography pretty damn good, especially since these kids dont have the unlimited budget that Lucas had.
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Personal favourite, far and above. This one's nice, but... the below is art:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipx5cU8kLBw
Go Ho Brothers. Wushu and Lightsabers were meant to be together.
As evidenced by the fact that Lucasarts hired them to choreograph lightsaber styles for SWG.- rtini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's great - I saw a wushu tournament earlier this year and I recognized the movements in the that clip. I think the wushu guys added a bit too much wushu, like in between the fighting when they are standing there in classic wushu poses. The whole Matrix-style outfits is kind of silly too, and the music is kind of ridiculous. Totally awesome fighting though!
- hoopers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Okay, I liked the parent quite a bit as it was very well done, but this really was art. Thanks for the link!
However, other than the "concept" I don't think they really can be compared. Just my thought.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A long time ago, there was a a trailer for a fan-film that I -believe- was called, "Dualis." It was the best fan-made Star Wars clip I'd ever seen. Does anyone remember what it was or have any clue where to find a trailer, again?
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If it helps anyone remember/find it, it had all kinds of Lucas-quality special effects, ranging from light sabers to ships landing in exotic otherworldly environments.
- Nebulous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the name of the video is "Duality"
I've seen it and it's great. I felt it had too much digital compositing, but it still looked good. I am trying to find it online, but am having no luck =( - rtini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Duality was very well-done, but the fight choreography was miserable - it was clearly not performed by people with any martial arts training.

- Nebulous, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Okay, so this video is forever old. Ryan is an amazing artist and creator. He made this when he was way young, several years ago. This project actually got him a job with LucasArts for a while as a technical adviser for creating the lightsaber affect, and now he's working with Stargate Digital doing project and affects for them. He is truely a creative and talented person. His tutorial on creating lightsabers at home is pretty much the definitive guide if you want something that looks close to pro. Most editors use his technique or a variation of it. That being said...this video is awesome. He's currently working on Ryan vs. Dorkman 2. I'm excited about that one too! =) It should be out sometime early 2007.
And finally, this video is too old to be dugg...again... sheesh.- Nebulous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://www.ryan-w.com to find out more about Ryan Weiber

http://youtube.com/watch?v=j6sUnzKinmQ - wonboodoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What (off-the-shelf or open-source) software can be used to produce these effects?
- Nebulous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1None. Adobe AfterEffects is the way to go. You can download a 30 day free trial from Adobe.com
I've seem some attempts out there to try and do lightsabers quickly and easily, but all of them pretty much suck. The slow rotoscope is really the only way to do it right. I've also seen a couple of 3D programs try to do this affect, but all of them in my opinion have failed. Ryan Weiber (Ryan-W.com) has a tutorial on his site on how to do it in AfterEffects. It can also be found on TFN.
