Top 10 Videogame Characters That Need To Die Off
top10kid.com — Game publishers love money and in their minds the best way to make that money is to take what made them successful and keep shoving it down our throats. It ’s time to let some of them die so we can have something new and not be stuck playing the same out-dated characters from the 80’s or grizzled hero’s that populate most games today.

- irfanmp, on 07/03/2008, -3/+40The top 4 are Mario, Sonic, Link and Donkey Kong? This list is trying to kill my childhood.
- feshmania, on 07/03/2008, -1/+50so you basically want to kill off every character?
- RoflCoptah, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2silly mortals, you dont kill snake, snake kills you
- bugsysservant, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1Well, there is still... the Sims...
- FUR10N, on 07/03/2008, -5/+35what a stupid list, maybe it would be better if it was called: Top 10 popular videogame characters
- AttilaD, on 07/03/2008, -1/+8My floating bunny fairy just buried you.
- djb28, on 07/03/2008, -2/+6I agree, mostly. I still kind of like the idea of a "faceless character" (Master Chief). Still, there are way too many soldier/ex-soldier characters, and the elves are rather overdone. The rest are goofy, but still ok in their own game "worlds." Maybe the real question should be: which of these series needs to die?
- Nobiting, on 07/03/2008, -5/+32Gordon Freeman > Master Chief
- ConfusedCartman, on 07/04/2008, -0/+9***** A, man. The Half-Life series are my favorite games ever, and among the best games ever made(imo, it is the best series ever made).
- gryphon50, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1I concur!
- Acglaphotis, on 07/04/2008, -4/+1In bizarro world, maybe.
- drakenlot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3You, my friend, are in a minority on this topic.
- Acglaphotis, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I know : (
- xchrisxsays, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3Wait, which game has sold the most copies? Ohhhhh...
- CurlyFoot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3House = Gordon Freeman
- Haoie, on 07/03/2008, -0/+20I don't necessary agree with the list, but I think we can all agree that gaming needs more fresh, innovative ideas.
- estvir, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1CREATIVE ideas too, if just innovative Nintendo will continue on with yet-another-Mario/Zelda type games.
- caddyalan, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Is it time to retire -- let's say -- space marines or vigilante heroes? Maybe. But perhaps the better method would be to rethink the *genre.* Create an independent game which shakes things up. Make an FPS with a very different main character. Try to imagine a sandbox game where the main character is distinct.
- ConfusedCartman, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3I think the Half-Life series did rethink the FPS genre(a storyline that is coherent AND enjoyable? Gasp!), and I wish there were more games that "hooked" me like Half-Life 2 did. I have high hopes for LittleBigPlanet and Fallout 3.
- carpespasm, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Don't forget Portal. An FPS with a female lead who weilds a gun that makes wormholes instead of slinging lead and a character roster of the female lead that you might never notice is a woman, the insane computer, some happy turrets, and someone you never see who lives in the air ducts. That's certainly something had hadn't been done before.
- ConfusedCartman, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Portal is a great game, but I want to see it integrated more deeply into the Half-Life universe(Episode 3 maybe?) and expanded upon(Portal 2?) before it will be a favorite of mine. It definitely is one of my most played games, but since the puzzles are just that, it gets a little repetitious.

- RoflCoptah, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3!
- xMaru, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4So what character does that leave us off with?
- RoflCoptah, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5the only one that matters:
Pac Man - drakenlot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2That little ***** the L block.
- boydrew, on 07/04/2008, -1/+0Hello Kitty and Hannah Montana games
- drakenlot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Ok, I 'm burying you for bringing those up even if it seems to be true.
I like to pretend they don't exist, it's the only way I can continue to live.
- drakenlot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Ok, I 'm burying you for bringing those up even if it seems to be true.
- RoflCoptah, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5the only one that matters:
- ed54, on 07/04/2008, -2/+14***** no. Mario is the *****.
- 3tcp, on 07/04/2008, -0/+18wtf, does this person just hate video games or something?
- greevar, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5What is needed is some new and unique hero characters to go crazy for. Conker the Squirrel was something different.
- brainboy77, on 07/04/2008, -0/+9mario, master chief, snake, and link? way to alienate the digg crowd.
- drakenlot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Not just the digg community, gaming in general.
These characters are some of the biggest, and appear in some of the most innovative games ever.
- drakenlot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Not just the digg community, gaming in general.
- MrDarkSim, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7Mega Man needs to get the 'Old Yeller' treatment.
From Wikipedia: Mega Man has appeared in over 100 games over the past two decades. That's about 90 too many. - chaosblade77, on 07/04/2008, -1/+51. DK is pretty much dead already. Has he appeared in any Wii titles aside from Brawl? Only had one GCN title I can think of, plus appeared in Melee. Compared to the days when Rare was working the series, DK is a dead character.
2. Sonic is pretty close to dead as well. Sonic Unleashed sounded to me like a last ditch effort to please the fans, and pretty much every 3D Sonic game since Sonic Adventure sucked (Sonic Adventure 2 was alright, but meh).
3. "Orcs/Elves/Dwarves" is pretty generic as he says, and they aren't THAT popular except in fantasy MMOs. Outside of that they are minor generic characters that don't matter much anyway.
4. Maybe I read that wrong... but does he want Samus to die off just because he doesn't like games with female protagonists? That's somewhere near the top of the list of stupidest reason you could not like a character/game.
And for the record, Knuckles is awesome.- chiefbandit2200, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I think there was a Donkey Kong jungle beats game made for wii... So yeah, he might as well be dead. Sonic too. RIP I would like to see more Metroid games...
Orcs Dwarves and Elves are way over used though... - ButchersBoy, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure he's not dead. In fact, I suspect he may be the next big name to be re-tapped by Ninty...his sleeping potential is huge.
- drakenlot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1The reason for killing off Samus makes it sound like the author is a pre-pubescent kid who hates girls cause they have cooties.
Or he's a closet-homosexual who can't stand women.
- chiefbandit2200, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I think there was a Donkey Kong jungle beats game made for wii... So yeah, he might as well be dead. Sonic too. RIP I would like to see more Metroid games...
- trashhalo, on 07/04/2008, -1/+5We need MORE samus not less. Secondly, I think.... that part of me dyed when looking at that guy in the sonic costume. Thanks, now I am going to go gouge out my eyes.
http://top10kid.com/wp-content/uploads/sonic.jpg- chaosblade77, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0Definitely need MORE Samus. Gunpei Yokoi was a freaking genius. Had it not been for the Virtual Boy incident, he probably never would have left Nintendo, wouldn't have been in that car accident, and would have been twice the creative mind Miyamoto was.
The man created the Gameboy AND Metroid. The original Gameboy speaks for itself: it was on the market longer than any other game system to date and sold extremely well during it's run, as well as practically paving the way for portable gaming today.
And Metroid is a franchise that's nearly infinitely expandable. Between the enigma that is Samus, and the massive back story, of which the surface has not even been scratched by the games, it's easily Nintendo's deepest and most powerful franchise.
He also made Miyamoto what he is today. Without Yokoi realizing Miyamoto's potential and taking him under his wing, Miyamoto probably never would have gone anywhere in Nintendo.

- U83RMENSCH, on 07/04/2008, -1/+10this guy sucks.
- Th0rus, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7lame.
- bowserkid, on 07/04/2008, -3/+5OK that supposedly generic spikey-haired blonde guy is actually Vash from Trigun -- an anime not a video game. And while he may be a bit emo he DID destroy an entire city with his own arm by accident so I'm going to say he's a wee bit entitled and a wee bit bad-ass.
And what's the big deal with playing as Samus? Did this guy also freak out when he played Ms. Pac Man and discovered the bow on her head? - Koush, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Hey that trigun cosplay was actually pretty good. You could of picked some more ridiculous ones.
- SquareEnix, on 07/04/2008, -1/+5the article writer needs to die off...
- NaziHatinChimp, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3Solid Snake? He has had one ***** game in the last 15 years. You don't play as him in MGS 2 or 3 or portable ops. So that leaves MGS1 and MGS4. What a bad article.
- beware001, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2dug for 10, 9, 7, 5, buried for 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8
- xchrisxsays, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3This is pure videogame blasphemy
- Acglaphotis, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Halo has had 3 games. How is that too much? Is this guy trying to kill everything that is good within the gaming world? At least he didn't kill Half-Life.
- Typhoon2009, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Don't hate on spiky hair
- DLtheRMX, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Sonic does not need to die, please I wanted to marry him as a little girl.
no joke. - ButchersBoy, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1When Mario retires, I retire.
- PullingTeeth, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Addendum: Jack Thompson. He's not real, right?
- benburned, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Hasn't Link already died many times? The Zelda series takes place over thousands of years.
He just comes back as a different person in each game. - toxicityj, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1they had something with the spikey hair one. but it all went downhill from there.
- boydrew, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0Yeah Cloud from FFVII is the only one worthwhile. Who puts Link on a list like this? .....
- pookkake, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1They don't need to kill mario, they just need to kill his horrible voice and replace it with that of an authentic italian plumber from brooklyn
- drakenlot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1No way man, Charles Martinet in Mario64 created the perfect voice for Mario. No other voice would fit.
Plus, since when is Brooklyn the place for an authentic Italian voice? I thought Italy would be better.- pookkake, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1it only works for very little speech, if he speaks more than one sentence it gets annoying VERY fast
- pookkake, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1correction: italian-american
- drakenlot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1No way man, Charles Martinet in Mario64 created the perfect voice for Mario. No other voice would fit.
- drakenlot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2FTA:
I’ll be honest. I don’t play Tomb Raider because I’m a guy and I like to pretend to be a bad-ass and not some dual-wielding chick in hot pants and a tube top. Metroid fooled me the first time into playing by waiting until the end to reveal the character was a girl. I’ll admit I had fun at first but now I just feel dirty and not just because I play games without pants.
Sounds like someone has trouble with their masculinity.
Seriously, what the hell is the problem with guys playing a game with a leading female? - havokdu, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Where is Sam Fisher?
They should have retired him after Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and introduced a new character for double agent or the upcoming game. - duffy89, on 07/04/2008, -2/+1Mario needs to die, I'm sick of all the digg stories on anything vaguely about him.. Him and his gay tash and voice
- rickastleyfan2, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1This list is retarded. It's not funny because he knows he likes to play these games but just wants attention so he comes up with stupid reasons that fail at being funny.
- baron42, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1"One more WWII game and I’m buying a Volkswagon bus and hiding out in Canada." Im not sure what a Volkswagon is but, well hello there COD 5.
- drakenlot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1He would never be allowed in Canada.
- Cheesasaurus, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I'm all for people coming out with new and original characters, but that doesn't mean good older ones need to be killed off. Although I do agree characters are starting to fall into the same basic formulas and some of them are annoying (I'm looking at you, space marine saving the world/universe).
- boydrew, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Buried. Freakin gay list includes some of the greatest video game characters ever created. "i don't want to play as a girl". thats idiotic.
- MattSFJ2, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Link does die...there are multiple Links...
- asnider, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Terrible article. Between killing off the iconic characters and all the generic character types he mentioned, what do we have left? Pacman...and...Star Wars games?
- GodsDragon, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Since when is Vash a Pre-Teen ...
- djb28, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0Yeah. He's like, hundreds of years old. And he's not even (fully) human.
- vichussmith, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Isn't Halo basically done with? Ditto for Solid Snake.
When you get rid of these characters, what do you really have left? Overly buff Space Marines? I'm all for new franchises, but these are character types that are a mainstay.
