- Myonosken, on 06/26/2008, -1/+4I'm really confused. I thought Crysis was FarCry 2 based on the reviews I read of it. Haven't got the PC to play Crysis so I don't really know that much about it.
Anyone care to explain please?- BugMeNot2, on 06/26/2008, -0/+12Crytek developed Far Cry, Ubisoft published it. On January 23, 2006, Crytek announced Crysis. Two months later, on March 30, 2006, Ubisoft announced that they had acquired all rights to the Far Cry license. Far Cry 2 was announced by Ubisoft a couple months before Crysis' release.
- SonicRush, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Crysis and FarCry do not share the same story arc or characters. Gameplay-wise, Crysis was sort of an evolution of FarCry, I felt, but it wasn't an actual sequel.
According to the wiki, none of the playable characters in FarCry 2 are Jack Carver either. Sounds like it will be a completely separate story also.
- JettaMan, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2Looks cool. I'm relieved there is a mission aspect to it this time. Gunning and running gets old after about 15 hours.

- Yazilliclick, on 06/26/2008, -3/+2I'm wondering what's new, what's the great gameplay. Guess nothing is new, just a cookie-cutter fps game with new graphics engine and probably typically weak story line especially since it's open world.

Cool, so it'll be playable as early as 2010.- heresy_fnord, on 06/26/2008, -2/+18Depends on how you look at it.
They'll release it Q2 2009 and it'll be patched once in Q4 2009 and then maybe a second time in 2010 and then it will be playable.
Playable meaning about 80% of the people can play it 75% of the time...- TripKore, on 06/26/2008, -8/+0What he means is companies always say 1 date, then change it 10times, 2yrs later. Like Unreal 3 for example. It was suppose to be Unreal 2006 Q1, Q2, Q3, then Q4, then 2007, Q1, Q2, Q3, then finally Christmas 2007 (Q4).

He means graphics, as in relation to Crysis still being struggletown for even the best video cards. As in, in 2010, then our video cards will be good enough to run it. - Dracusis, on 06/27/2008, -1/+1No no, it was piracy that ruined the first game, system requirements had nothing to do with it, PIRACY I TELLS YOU!
So, who's going to lend me a few hundred bucks to refit my rig? - dbsmoker, on 06/27/2008, -4/+4Maybe on PC, but I'm sure it'll run just fine on a 360.
- maowcat, on 08/28/2008, -0/+0This game has an optimized engine, i can reasure you it won't be as bad as crysis when it comes to performance, crysis was a failure when it came to performance, well still is.

- spiderman5178, on 06/26/2008, -11/+6This game looks sick!!
- silver26, on 06/26/2008, -0/+7I think it looks good.
- LiamIsOnFire, on 06/26/2008, -3/+61That weapon jamming seems like it would get annoying. Past gaming experiences have taught me that its very frustrating when something is left to luck.
- Densetsu, on 06/26/2008, -0/+20Machete FTW!
- gdehms, on 06/26/2008, -0/+15Blades also get dull in the game, requiring resharpening.
- Melodik, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4I thought weapon jamming was handled fairly well in STALKER. It provides a frantic unknown element to combat, which I think works well for open-world games. Having a jam simply means you have to be good at adapting to the situation, in this case finding cover until you can unjam the weapon.
- witcompe, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2Guns for show, knives for a pro!
- Ramzy, on 06/26/2008, -2/+7While that's true, it doesn't look *too* annoying. In the 20 minutes he played, he jammed once... And that's after how many hundreds of Uzi rounds?
I think it's a good feature that might play out even better if weapon jamming applies to enemies too.- noerrorsfound, on 06/26/2008, -2/+3He used a Mac-10, not an Uzi. And the USAS-12 at the start jammed, too, which is where he explained the jamming feature.
- cw1242, on 06/26/2008, -1/+26STALKER used weapon degredation and the status of your gun reflected how accurate/reliable the gun was. I like the realism of a gun jamming in a game because it makes you constantly monitor your equipment like you would in real life.
- noerrorsfound, on 06/26/2008, -1/+9Except the weapons degraded much too fast, the weapons jammed far too often, and you "unjammed" them by reloading.
- IndigoMoss, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but at least you can mod it to what you think is a reasonable degradation period.
- Zaneris, on 06/26/2008, -2/+8Obviously you've never used a real gun... there's 3 main ways the weapon will stop firing, either an empty mag, so therefore, reload; it'll fail to load a new round (semi-automatic weapons) in which case you'll check to make sure the mag is seated properly re-***** the weapon and continue firing, and finally the ***** kind where the bolt is only partially forward because the round got stuck, in this case you'll engage the bolt catch, try to shake it out, if that fails, remove the mag and continue to beat the ***** out of it to get the round free, lol. Then re-insert the mag and release the bolt catch, continue firing...
And yes, it's incredibly annoying when this happens, but that's life and why you keep your weapon clean and well lubricated. - Risingashes, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3And recreating the hassles and annoyances of real life is exactly what gaming needs.
This is why game designers have been working for years in recreating the coveted 'musket gaming market'. Soon enough gamers will be able to spend 4 minutes reloading for each shot and have abysmal accuracy. (And don't forget the 20% chance of the musket exploding and killing you- now that's entertainment.)
- tnoy, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6I hate the realism like that in a game because ITS A ***** GAME.
It amuses me when people bitch about the guns in a game not being realistic enough, when the character they play can be shot thousands of times.
- noerrorsfound, on 06/26/2008, -1/+9Except the weapons degraded much too fast, the weapons jammed far too often, and you "unjammed" them by reloading.
- warplayer, on 06/26/2008, -5/+1I agree, I don't even want a gun jam once a play session, but maybe a gun jam 2-3 times throughout the course of the game would be cool.
- jnava121, on 06/26/2008, -6/+3never should a weapon jam or malfunction in a video game, ***** it's not like that has ever happened in real life.... I wouldn't want the game to be to realistic now... i kind of like living in a fantasy world...
Whats the price of starship cruiser fuel these days guys?- punx, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I get pissed just having to reload in games.
- warplayer, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1What if they had visceral melee combat in the game, and the gun jamming moment leads to you throwing down your gun and having a knife fight with a guy? I dunno...something crazy like that...something different than running around shooting the same looking enemies over and over again.
- jnava121, on 06/26/2008, -6/+3never should a weapon jam or malfunction in a video game, ***** it's not like that has ever happened in real life.... I wouldn't want the game to be to realistic now... i kind of like living in a fantasy world...

"...enemies will include human mercenaries, but sci-fi creatures such as the mutants from Far Cry will not be featured."
And I'm glad, because both Far Cry and Crisis got kinda lame once mutants and dragons and aliens started flying around.- Dustmuffins, on 06/26/2008, -3/+10I disagree on Crysis, The aliens were actually pretty interesting to fight, and they weren't around too long.

- IndigoMoss, on 06/26/2008, -7/+4Depends on if the game is good or not. Crysis was not good and was pretty much a 7 hour tech demo. I don't think very many PC gamers that have the hardware to run it, played it very much at all. I know I sure as hell didn't. Multiplayer is horrible, single player is fun for the first 2-3 areas because it's so damn pretty, but after that it loses it's luster. I bought my copy on Ebay for $15 dollars 2 months after release.
- ProfessorFoo, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2It just sounds like you don't like PC shooters. I had a lot of fun with it. Also I could run it on my computer that would cost about $400 to build now (Athlon 3400+, Radeon x850 pro, 1 GB of ram).
- Dwebtron, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Dude. I have about that computer as my last build (3500+ / x800 pro / 2GB of ram) and that thing chugged around 10fps with everything minimal on a fresh 64bit xp. However, my new build, E6850 / 8800GTX (factory oc'ed) / 4GB of ram) runs it nearly on full.
I guess my point is that I agree, I played it quite alot after I finished it. The only problem I have / had was that I can't play any punkbuster servers as I am dumb / smart enough to be running 64-bit vista.

- azurechaos, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1multiplayer is horrible? the multiplayer was the best part in my opinion. huge open maps, capturing weapons facilities, and you were able to use nukes to destroy the enemy base. it's fun as hell, the only problem was that for a long time lots of people were using hacks and ruined it for the rest. but when you didn't have to deal with that i absolutely loved it.
- stonedgeek, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I enjoyed Crysis. Not the multiplayer part, but I rarely do enjoy multiplayer fps'.
It looked great on my pc (which was new at the time but only cost me $1100 to build).
The gameplay in the campaign may not have been the very best but it far surpasses a good 80% of other modern shooters out there.

- Stevethegreat, on 06/26/2008, -8/+4In fact the earlier demos they had shown had graphics which at times could put Crysis to shame. It seems like my fear have been validated they halved the quality of the atmosphere of the game so that it can be playable in the consoles. Consoles are extremely weak compared to the current mainstream (less than $150 GFX cards, etc) hardware, now that PC is dying we must get used of games remaining stationary and applying the same engines over and over again.

- Melodik, on 06/26/2008, -1/+2I am a PC gamer, but you put us to shame. Man, research your case before posting on Digg, of all places.
- Stevethegreat, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1I'm NOT a PC gamer, so I don't care for you. I work on VR systems and the rise of the consoles bothers me, they may leave me out of job as VR systems won't be as powerful simply because of the lack of hardware ability to compute position in 3d environment, accurate 3d representation and balance in such a system. Under console dominance we're going to eat the same food for more than two decades. There's no innovation in closed systems and when it is done (ala Wii) it is less subtle and overly clunky, than what consumer selection in a free market/environment would produce.
- bmdubya, on 06/26/2008, -3/+2The consoles are weak? They don't need the same amount of hardware that computers need because consoles are just for gaming. So they design hardware to handle just gaming, and basic multimedia functions. Comparing the specs of a 360 to a computer, a computer would blow it out of the water. But the hardware in a 360 is equivalent to a decent PC gaming machine, like in the $800-900 range. While yes, PCs are a lot more powerful than consoles, I don't think they are going to need to do much to make this game playable on consoles. Plus, the video is low-res streaming video. So even Crysis would look like ***** in those conditions. People are too quick to jump to conclusions. Why don't you just wait until there is a demo or HD videos that come out before making conclusions.

- BlackKnight6, on 06/26/2008, -0/+27This isn't made by Crytek. Crytek doesn't actually own the Farcry name. Ubisoft Montreal is the developer here.
- 0rthogonal, on 06/26/2008, -0/+15That's because Crysis was developed by Crytek on a new engine, the original developers of Far Cry.
The Far Cry franchise was bought by Ubisoft and Far Cry 2 is being developed by them on a different engine.
They are not the same company making these 2 games.- jezsik, on 06/26/2008, -0/+7That's unfortunate. For my money, the Far Cry engine was close to perfect for today's machines.
- parallax7d, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4Far Cry is using the original Far Cry engine with some improvements of course.

- bjs3171, on 06/26/2008, -0/+12the physics look awesome. it's hard to tell graphics in a low res video, though.
- vawksel, on 06/26/2008, -12/+1Yeah, I'm sure the graphics will be horrible, given CryTek's reputation.

- PsychoDesigns, on 06/26/2008, -2/+3Hmm, it seems that the buildings are not destructible like in Crysis. Its kinda disappointing but still looks fun.
- 0rthogonal, on 06/26/2008, -2/+6Why are you comparing this to Crysis. Far Cry 2 is being made by Ubisoft, not Crytek.
- xaxxon, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1You can compare any two games. These two games are relatively similar, so it's fair to compare them.
- PsychoDesigns, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I thought both used the Cry Engine. I just remembered that Farcry 2 uses Dunia. I've been to their engine demo at ADAPT last year. My bad.
- Melodik, on 06/26/2008, -2/+3The comparisons, however, are inevitable. I was disappointed by this as well, but remember the game is still a ways off.

Anyway, the game looks very nice but not that impressive.- Stevethegreat, on 06/26/2008, -4/+9It used to look impressive, until it got watered down to satisfy the 3 year old hardware of the consoles, thus at most you can have a HL2 fidelity for which there are still people calling it fine, I'm calling it deevolution of gaming, with the recent rate we're going to have Crysis graphics in consoles by 2028 and we'd drool while the equivalent difference between 1986 and 2006 was Final Fantasy I to Oblvion.
From now on we'll have turtle's pace only because of the locking up that console gaming is being subjugated under and in general the very non free market conditions that exists in consoles (remember it was the Free market that propelled Moore's law and gave us this pace of development, now with propriety hardware becoming the norm, forget Mr Moore, welcome to the next gen which is exactly the same as the last gen, only more noisy, devoid of content and pricier, congratulation gamers for choosing the fascistic market burdened by the cancer of a cartel)- rg8670bx, on 06/26/2008, -2/+3Deevolution of gaming? Are you serious? I don't get it. Is amazing graphics really that important? Last time I checked, games were meant to be played and not stared at. Compared to great gameplay, graphics adds very little to the overall experience. Crysis is the perfect example of this. Its bleeding edge graphics couldn't hide the fact that it was a mediocre shooter at best.
Besides, console graphics isn't THAT bad like you make it seem. Though they may not be pushing the envelope graphics-wise, they make up for it in innovation. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the PC. I find it ironic that you think consoles are devoid of content when they have the largest and most varied software library out there. Seems likes all we PC gamers get nowadays is more of the same bland, rehashed FPS/RTS/MMO crap.- Stevethegreat, on 06/26/2008, -3/+5If you remember well enough the last 20 years didn't give us better graphics, only. It gave us better AI, vaster worlds, more complex storylines, cutscenes, music scores. Doom was out in 1993, Bioshock in 2007, look at the diferences and don't you tell me it is "only graphics".
PC is dead and I'm OK with that, what I'm not OK is the closed architecture of the consoles, this would only lead to the break down of all the rules that made Bioshock so much more full of an experience than Doom. All console evolutions were based on PC genres (FPS, online gaming etc) AND PC hardware, now that PC is dead who would push the envelope because sure as hell Sony and Microsoft won't fill those shoes and if they do prepare for a lot pricier gaming than PC could ever imagine to be.
A cartel means just that, no growth of the market's characteristics. Gaming is at a stall, PS4 would be PS3 plus an 8800GT (an -already- old gen card) get used to it, forget the pace of development of the past we reached the plateau even before silicon had reached its limits discarding Moore's law, the industry shot herself in the foot.

- Stevethegreat, on 06/26/2008, -2/+4I'm not defending PC, I'm blaming the consoles for not opening their architecture. They stall hardware development and as a result gaming at large.

- tnoy, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Supercomputers are good at one thing: floating point math.
Video cards are good at one thing: floating point math.
If the game's engine were ported to fully utilize the architecture of a specific supercomputer, then it would do very well.
A single proccessior would perform poorly compared to a single GPU, but a modern supercomputer makes up for that fact by having a ***** of processors. - noseeme, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1tl;dr supercomputers are better at running scientific calculations. When it comes rendering 3D games, graphics chips do it the best because that is what they are designed to do.
It depends on what kinds of chips are in them. Lots of supercomputing clusters these days are filled with Opterons or Xeons, in which case they are stronger with ALU based code execution than they are with FPU based code execution. It should be noted, that in general FPU based executions do better than their ALU counterparts when scaled heavily into an SMP environment. Still, because of all the bottlenecks being created by the data being sent though hundreds of seperate front side buses and going through lots of interconnect nodes, the framerate would suffer.
Also, this assumes that Ubisoft will somehow magically be able to give this game some sort of unprecedented multithreading abilities.

- stridox, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Guys! THIS ISN'T CRYSIS. THIS ISN'T EVEN ON CryENGINE2! They said we would be able to play it completely well on a 1gb of ram, and a GeForce series 6 video card. Remember, a 360 can run it.

- pathouston22, on 06/26/2008, -3/+2I bet they don't make the mistake again of not being able to play the game on high settings on todays technology thanks to all the whiney bitching gamers, despite the fact that you could play it on medium settings and it still looked better than 99% of the other games out there.
- kolyana, on 06/26/2008, -6/+1Man, the last Far Cry hurt my computer and forced me to upgrade - this looks so damn fine that I can see me needing to do the same all over; $2k on a computer game ... I don't know why I do it, but it looks really sick, so I can see me upgrading my cards and CPU.

- adamuffa, on 06/26/2008, -11/+3Awesome, another average FPS!!
- Flyingdebrisguy, on 06/26/2008, -2/+5because the average FPS has 50km of seamless exploration space, ***** of dynamic stuff, and intelligent non scripted ai. Please, you probably don't even play FPS games. Hell i'm sold on 50 hours of gameplay alone considering how most companies have been going the route of having FPS games finish in under 8. I remember the days when 8 hours was the expectation from expansion packs, not the core game. So 50 brings me back to a better day.
- adamuffa, on 06/26/2008, -7/+1Nice assumption. I've played every FPS created since wolfenstein.
Far cry has always sucked and always will. But hey, whatever floats your boat.
