Which Game Console Does Best and Worst in Each Genre?
gamesradar.com — We compiled game review scores (collected from Metacritic) by genre to show you which console does each kind of game best, in the most unbiased way we can. We've split the results into two kinds for each console. The first is the average score for all games in each genre. The second is just the top 5 best-scoring games in each category.

- doubl3d, on 08/28/2008, -24/+73Exact reason i sold my wii, it is last in the games.
- AndrewDB, on 07/23/2008, -4/+26I was, repeat, was a die hard Nintendo fan... before they started going casual.
I now use my Wii for 2 things. It's virtual console, and smash brothers brawl.
That's it.
It's so sad to see Nintendo going down the drain like this. :(- sanderscm2, on 07/23/2008, -3/+5I've had a lot of fun recently with boom blox.
- jamesdew, on 07/23/2008, -3/+6Mario kart?
- powerbenny, on 07/23/2008, -2/+6Mario Kart absolutely rules. The most fun you can have waving a steering wheel around in the air.
- whoamarcos, on 07/23/2008, -1/+17I sold my wii a year ago after realizing I never used it and decided brawl wasn't worth keeping a wii for (especially after the delay to spring)
Then I got myself a 360 and I've been pleased since- oger, on 07/23/2008, -12/+4well i have had 3 xbox 360 now all dead. so i went out and pick up a wii and i love it. now all i need is a ps3 (lol).
- TheTaoOfBill, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1Why are people still complaining about 360's getting the red ring of death? Microsoft has handled it better than any gaming company i've ever seen. They take any system with a red ring back for free and replace it within a week. What more could you ask for?
It is definitely worth dealing with for all the kick ass games on the 360. - chaosblade77, on 07/25/2008, -1/+1Nothing against the 360, but I'm pretty sure no other company has had to handle that kind of a problem with their consoles...
NES had issues, PS2 had issues, but the 360 was worse than both of them.
- tattertech, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3I had the Wii from launch day, and eventually sold it to a coworker when I saw an article on top 20 games for 2H 2008.
- digitallysick, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5I had a nintendo wii at launch to i enjoyed wii sports, but most of the games afterwords were not that great. Most just seemed rushed and i got tired of flipping my wrists around to play. I couldn't find a decent fps , red steel wasnt that great . I still haven't played many decent games for it, although i recently tried mario cart and it really brought back memories. I might get a nintendo wii again once the home brew scene really kicks in.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1It's kicking in pretty good already, check out wiibrew.org and look under homebrew applications.
- coyote1284, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Once I finally get back to and finish Metroid Prime 3, I'll probably abandon my Wii. Ok, I might keep it around for Super Swing Golf and I hated golf games before this port of Pangya!
- eNyoron, on 07/23/2008, -3/+0If the list only included console exclusives (or at least excluded games which are superior on the PC) and didn't count the same game multiple times (Oblivion +2 expansions for the 360), the Wii would score relatively higher.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 07/23/2008, -3/+1The cheap but fun Wii-ware games I've bought recently (Dr Mario Virus Blaster, Tv Show King and Major League Eating) and the Wii Homebrew Channel are the two things left breathing life into that little white box so I KINDA agree but I have a good argument.
Geexbox and dragon media player are doing pretty well development-wise and pretty soon (coupled with my 500gb mybook usb hard drive and The Homebrew Channel) I could be looking at a reasonable standard-def remote controlled music and movie solution that takes all of 8 inches by 12 inches of shelf space to accommodate.
Of course that last paragraph has nothing to do with the games aspect at all, but could help sway someone ready to sell their wii based on reading articles like these.
Hold off for a bit, good things are coming. - TonyG2021, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1I call this article bogus because of the fact the each council gives something different for the genre based of age and prefrences. I have a wii because my 8 year old daughter loves it and to find just as fun games for her and her fgriends on another council just sucks, regardless of their top 5 scores.
Halo 3 whatever, give me some Mario Kart!- TheTaoOfBill, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Kids like adventure games. And the article clearly says the wii is the adventure game king.
But for the rest of us who need more adult games we're going to play the adult consoles. - nobelief, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2don't worry, I'm sure Nintendo will give you allllllllll the Mario you need

- MrrThrust, on 07/22/2008, -27/+11agree..
totally loath the wii, sold it at xmas modded with loads of extras, made a tidy sum :) - widgetmaker, on 07/22/2008, -29/+11They missed out strategy games and the PC and PS2 should be in there. Also has the author just discovered the graph function in excel, they couldn't make their mind up as to what sort they wanted to use.
Buried.- CollapseControl, on 07/22/2008, -5/+15The PC should be in an article based on Consoles? And I gather they are only talking about the new additions to the consoles, if PS2 would be in there, why not add every other console? Sony shouldn't be the only one using 2 consoles to display games.
- Recidivus, on 07/22/2008, -13/+7PS2 should be in there because they are still selling and making games for them.
- dandonia, on 07/23/2008, -8/+2Because the PS2 is still on the market and selling extremely well - where as places like Game don't even stock preowned games for xbox any more and the cube stopped ages ago.
The PC has no place in a console article though and you are right - that guy had no presentation skills - the switching up the graphs especially to the one on the side were awful.
- CollapseControl, on 07/22/2008, -5/+15The PC should be in an article based on Consoles? And I gather they are only talking about the new additions to the consoles, if PS2 would be in there, why not add every other console? Sony shouldn't be the only one using 2 consoles to display games.
- Maverick0420, on 07/22/2008, -49/+7Buried because of complete bias towards the 360. No way does it outdo the PS3 in RPGs
- petebot, on 07/22/2008, -5/+38Really? What RPG does the PS3 have that the 360 doesn't?
- Maverick0420, on 07/22/2008, -36/+3FF13 versus and White Knight Chronicles not to mention a majority of the exclusive RPGs for the PS3 only release in Japan.
- shutupdangit, on 07/23/2008, -0/+34Right, we should definitely include games that haven't been released yet on a graph based on total cumulative score.
- battletrax, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4This is not japan, this is the United States.
- DforSpiD, on 07/23/2008, -1/+11Maverick, I'm an RPG fan, and I prefer the Playstation 3 to the Xbox 360 (although I haven't bought either and could yet be swayed) but you're absolutely wrong about the RPGs on 360...
They have a few great exclusive RPGs that PS3 doesn't have, and from what I've seen PS3 has very few good exclusive RPGs...
I still may get a 360 instead of a PS3 because the RPGs are a big selling point for me, FF13 will be on both, and the 360 is cheaper...
Still... none of the systems have really done enough to impress me, because all I care about it the games, and this generation of games seems bland across the board...- Maverick0420, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1If you call Fable and Mass Effect and Folklore RPG's then you have to call Mario an RPG Fable ME and Folklore are all terrible games especially ME.
- staticneuron, on 07/23/2008, -2/+5I don't care how big of a PS3 fan you are. As it stands now the 360 has more RPG's on it. Both western and eastern.
Folklore is the on rpg the 360 doesn't have.
DforSpid FFversusXIII is stil exclusive so if you were really a FF fan I would wait abit and listen to teh rest of SE's announcements during GC and TGS.- dandonia, on 07/23/2008, -4/+2Eastern - really? I mean they aint even releasing FFXIII in Japan.
- staticneuron, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3"As it stands now the 360 has more RPG's on it. Both western and eastern."
Well I meant both eastern and western type of RPG's. Not really mentioning how many each system has in its respective territories (they are using metacritic). As it stands chances are there are more RPG's on the PS3 in japan.
Record of Agarest War, Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice, Tears to Tiara: Kakan no Daichi, Valkyria Chronicles may make this a non issue for japanese. - Harringstone, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2you live in japan?
- Shoegaze99, on 07/23/2008, -0/+11"Buried because of complete bias towards the 360."
How can raw numbers pulled from an objective third-party source that compiles said numbers from dozens and dozens of websites be biased? The numbers are what they are. All this piece did was compile them into charts. You may not LIKE what the numbers show, but again, they are what they are. - Elranzer, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Please name some (any) Japanese RPGs released in Japan but not on the 360.
- petebot, on 07/22/2008, -5/+38Really? What RPG does the PS3 have that the 360 doesn't?
- CrudeDarkness, on 07/22/2008, -37/+5fanboy talk:
"As you can see, 360 has the best overall score for its biggest games, while the general quality of PS3 and 360 titles are similar."
unbiased talk:
"As you can see, 360 has the best overall score for its biggest games, while the general quality of PS3 games is better."- DforSpiD, on 07/23/2008, -6/+12While the average game for the PS3 might be better, who wants to play a game that is average?
Unless the average game for the PS3 is completely amazing then the fact that it has less terrible games doesn't mean it will be more enjoyable.
I'll buy a system when it has enough games that are absolutely brilliant and will be worth my time and money...
Average games aren't worth my time... - MagikOvenMit, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2They're correct... .67% is not a big enough difference to make it "better". They're both basically the same.
- DforSpiD, on 07/23/2008, -6/+12While the average game for the PS3 might be better, who wants to play a game that is average?
- CollapseControl, on 07/22/2008, -21/+45Gotta love all the Metacritic based articles being made. It's hard to argue with numbers, huh?
Let's see... 360 games are in the "lead", everything seems in order, good job.- PhantomRogue, on 07/23/2008, -18/+26I think these kind of "reports" are *****. The only way you can compare platform reviews is to look at games that come out on all three. PS3 will always have the best first party games, XBox has really solid third party software, and the Wii will always only have quality first party games.
The reason the 360 is the best, is the best 5 of the 360 are all VERY good games (due to sheer numbers). Where the best 5 on the PS3... maybe only 3 can be termed "best", the same goes for the Wii.
The 360 is best because of its insane library of games. The Wii is still a toy. And the PS3 is still trying to find its home. (Har, pun not intended, but left it in there).- DGRules, on 07/23/2008, -5/+19Strictly speaking, they're all toys.
- chrisfu, on 07/23/2008, -1/+12"The 360 is best because of its insane library of games."
Which is why he takes into account ALL games in a genre on a certain platform, and then the top 5 on that platform. The article isn't ***** at all, and the author has obviously tried his best to even up the playing field before conducting his research.
Speaking as someone who owns all three consoles, it's actually in my interests for all of the consoles to do well and put out grade A releases. All things said, it'd take a stubborn person indeed to disagree with his findings. Nintendo definitely need to work harder at attracting better third party support. - dandonia, on 07/23/2008, -8/+4The article says it best at the bottom
1) Metacritic collects review scores from everywhere. If a lads' mag reckon DOA Xtreme 2 is a 10/10 because the girls are hot, that has as much weight as EDGE's opinion
2) While we applaud Metacritic's invaluable service, its genre-labelling is highly suspect. While we have left most games where they are, we could not stand idly by and let Geometry Wars go in as a first-person shooter. That's simply not true.
3) Some games have not been included. Metacritic won't include a score for games that haven't been reviewed by enough sources. So brand new releases are not present and neither are extremely low-profile titles.
4) THE CONSOLES HAVE HAD DIFFERENT LENGTHS OF TIME ON THE SHELVES. NOT ONLY DOES THAT MEAN 360 HAS MORE GAMES AVAILABLE THAN PS3, BUT ALSO THAT THE OLD GAMES ARE JUST THAT - OLD. IF SOMETHING SCORED 85 ON ITS RELEASE, IT STAYS AT 85 UNLESS NEW REVIEWS ARE ADDED. IF THAT EXACT SAME GAME WERE RELEASED TODAY ON PS3, IT MAY LOOK OUTDATED ALREADY, SO THAT HAS TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not an average if all games aren't included
The 360 was first to market with a new generation - there early games will have blown a few people away because they were better than anything on the PS2 and Xbox. If Perfect Dark was released today do you really think it would get 18 reviews over 90 including two in the 100 range?
Tony Hawks Wasteland - 19 scores over 80 including some in the 90's
nah
-------
It would be interesting to see the released as of january 08 data - pixelate, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3@dandonia:
no. 1 is just incorrect. Metacritic aggregates from plenty of sources but doesn't weight them all equally (they also don't disclose what they give more weight to, but you can presume EDGE > 'lads mag') - Elranzer, on 07/23/2008, -3/+3"PS3 will always have the best first party games"'
Really? Honestly? PS3 has the best first-party titles? Which Sony-developed titles are better than Super Mario Galaxy, Brawl, Twilight Princess or Mario Kart Wii?
First-party titles has always been Nintendo's domination. Third parties have always been Sony's strong point, which they're losing ground to the 360 over. - Borgcube, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1Well, while you may be partially, correct, I will disagree. Sony is, and always was, all about third-party games and Wii does have some, though very rare, good 3rd party games. Because it is the console that gets most of the shovelware, it is hard to find them, but then there's games like Zack and Wiki and No More Heroes, Conduit should be coming out soon and, well, I'm sure there are more, but it really is a pain to dig through shovelware.
- dansmeek, on 07/24/2008, -2/+2"Super Mario Galaxy, Brawl, Twilight Princess or Mario Kart Wii?"
ratchet and clank is almost as good as super mario galaxy.
i guess tekken would be the equivalent to brawl. wii wins.
zelda, can i compare MGS4 to this? if so, ps3, easy win
mario kart wii isn't even close to gran turismo. yes even gt prologue. - Tahiri, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1"Really? Honestly? PS3 has the best first-party titles? Which Sony-developed titles are better than Super Mario Galaxy, Brawl, Twilight Princess or Mario Kart Wii?"
Pretty much all of Sony's first part games are better.
Galaxy was just another average platformer. Twilight Princess was ruined for me by being the 20th games in the series, while being a huge Zelda fan (I buy Nintendo systems for the game alone) I just found it to be more of the same/boring. Mario Kart Wii doesn't hold a candle to Gran Turismo or even Full Auto
- mal1964, on 07/23/2008, -3/+1What comes around goes around
- exscind, on 07/23/2008, -4/+3Metacritic is always where I go first when I want to see how people have rated a particular game. Thankfully they include individual scores, not just aggregates.
- davidkeithjones, on 07/23/2008, -9/+1Does the PS3 even have 5 games in each genre?
360 is the best! Especially when its fresh off of warranty repair :P- CollapseControl, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1If only added a jab at Nintendo!
- davidkeithjones, on 07/23/2008, -2/+2I would jab Nintendo but its not a gaming system. Its a tamagochi pet.
- santasing, on 07/23/2008, -6/+3Number are all very well and good, reviews bought by advertising contracts and so forth.
The real question is, does the 360 has any games or is it all a myth. In 3 years, the 360 has had only 3 good games. That's horrible. I don't really know why people keep buying the console, when it can pump out only 3 good games in 3 years. FeOW, ME and Bioshock. And none of which are exclusive.- CollapseControl, on 07/23/2008, -4/+5You're a complete *****. Just because you don't have ANY interest in 99% of the 360 games, doesn't mean there are no good games and every other gamer needs to drop it.
You need to grow up little boy.
I can easily say that the PS3 has 0 games that I want to play, but I won't wonder why people still want to purchase it.
Or I can go the fanboy route: The PS3 only has one all-star game in the 2 years it's been out, the online service is lacking and trying to play catch up with the far better 360 service. Unless you want a cheap blu-ray player, there is no need for a PS3. - santasing, on 07/23/2008, -6/+3Sorry for having an opinion.
And you do say that all the time that the PS3 has no games. I do have a 360 unlike you and I really don't have any games for it except for the ones listed. So, for me, the 360 is a complete dud.
Some of my friends feel the same way. Reviews are all nice and good, but when it comes to games you want to put down money for, I don't see anything in the 360 camp except for the 3 I listed.
On the other hand, I have 11 games for my PS3, some are multi-plats, but I wouldn't want to buy a game for a console that has a high probability of being just dying.
You know trash talk is all very well and good, but I don't see anyone disproving my point that the 360 has only 3 must have games. - CollapseControl, on 07/23/2008, -5/+3Exactly, your opinion of it not having more than 3 games, that you'll enjoy. While, me and all my gaming friends have so many games to choose from to play on the 360 we don't even have enough time to get to them all.
My opinion on the PS3 is that it has 0 games that make me want to purchase a 3rd console for my entertainment. The only nice thing the PS3 has going for it is the free online aspect, but yet, how does that help me when none of my friends will be using the console? I'll leave it alone that PSN has so many more steps to get an online match going on the PS3 over the 360.
So we even each other out, except that you actually OWN the console you despise, while I decided to wait a few years before even considering getting a PS3.
Maybe i'll pick up the PS3 for a fun weekend when I don't have any good 360 games to play and none of my friends are online, but judging from the list of upcoming games starting in August, it'll be a LONG time before i'm bored with no games to play. - santasing, on 07/23/2008, -5/+3What are you talking about? There is only 1 good game for the 360 coming out, Fable 2. GeOW2 was good when it came out because it was the first major game to use cover, now all that has been done before. I can smell a cheesy, melodramatic clusterfuc** in the name of a good story. Dom dies, whoop dee do.
Ng2 was a dud, Too Human seems to be going the same way. I heard so many things about Lost Odyssey, but in the end, it was a very bad game. I saw a loading screen every 3-4 minutes. Try it out, you will know what I mean. - CollapseControl, on 07/23/2008, -5/+2According to YOU, a hopeless SONY lover. lmao, only 1 good game? Ask any unbiased gamer who actively uses his 360 how many games they are looking forward to, NO ONE will say just 1 good game is coming.
As for me there are over a dozen games coming out on the 360 this Fall that will be a straight up fun purchase:
Too Human
Gears of War 2
Left 4 Dead
Fable 2
Mercenaries 2
Just Cause 2
Silent Hill
Dead Space
Fallout 3
Far Cry 2
Ghostbusters
Saints Row 2
Call of Duty 5
Prince of Persia
Tomb Raider
Mirrors Edge
Wheter or not they are good is strictly up to the gamer who plays them, not the child who doesn't want to give it a try and is angry because he can't play them.
You are like a little kid trying to grasp at anything to make it go your way. You fail, miserably. - Tahiri, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1I was going to go into a rant of how 360 has a lot more than 3 great games, but that CollapseAsshole demonstrated he's just as bad as santasing in the fantrolling department. You both are complete idiots.
If you can't find more than 1 game on PS3 that'd make you want it, then you just haven't looked. Plain and simple.
If you can't find more than 3 good games on 360, well I won't even begin to say how stupid you are.
Both of you are cheating yourselves out of great games because you are idiots
- CollapseControl, on 07/23/2008, -4/+5You're a complete *****. Just because you don't have ANY interest in 99% of the 360 games, doesn't mean there are no good games and every other gamer needs to drop it.

- KingDrewsky, on 07/22/2008, -7/+68Good research; horrible presentation. The author sucks at Excel. I'm still digging it b/c it is good info.
- IglooBurner, on 07/23/2008, -1/+7why does he gotta use a different presentation for each case its so annoying, they're the same data after all.
- canthraxp, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1No, it is not.
What if a console has 1000 games and has 100 great games, and another has 10 games and 5 great games? Averages don't share that kind of information.
- coltrane68, on 07/22/2008, -10/+153Someone just learned how to make graphs in Excel. Yay! I'm making cones! I'm making cylinders! I'm so talented!
- tehjabba, on 07/22/2008, -26/+4 X-box's sheer numbers of games mean its bound to have a higher top 5 scores. The overall scores are a more accurate representation of overall quality but then again who buys all games?. Another game journo with nothing better to do than stir up the fanboys.
Had to lol at the 'console FPS'. Isn't that an oxymoron or something?- dandonia, on 07/23/2008, -3/+1It's nort just that - metacritics dont include all the really bad titles - so while they count 3 years worth of great games they dont count 3 years worth ofbad games in with the average.
- Endies, on 07/23/2008, -16/+51Finally some solid proof the Wii sucks. It may be selling the most, but in no way is it the gamers console, unless you only like playing five games.
- geocar, on 07/23/2008, -8/+5Finally, some solid proof that gamers don't know ***** about video games.
Who continuously sells the most and who makes the most money isn't an indicator of what's right in games, but whether some reviewers give it enough decimal points.- Kral, on 07/23/2008, -2/+9As a Wii owner, I'm sorry, but the reviewers are right. - sindex, on 07/23/2008, -8/+1Or enjoy playing like.... fun games.
Now feel free to bury me to justify the $500 you spent to play the same games that were better on your PC 3 years ago. - TheNinjaJesus, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2The only reason the Wii is selling more is because its like 5$ and some change...imagine that ppl are more willing to spend 200$ instead of 400-500$...
- sindex, on 07/23/2008, -5/+3Yeah.. it's less expensive. Oh, and also a LOT more fun.
This is assuming you have friends though. - TheNinjaJesus, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2I have a Wii...I haven't played it in at least 4 months....My friends have Wii's...they haven't played them since Zelda. The Wii is a gimmick...simple as that...yay motion controls...boo lack of online & good games...next please.
- sindex, on 07/23/2008, -5/+3Yeah.. it's less expensive. Oh, and also a LOT more fun.
- coyote1284, on 07/23/2008, -2/+5I kind of agree, but those 5 games are *really* fun, as opposed to more FPS with a plot ripped from Alien or Predator and "realistic graphics" (which means everything is some shade of grey and brown), or more JRPGS, most from SquareEnix.
- eggdog14, on 07/23/2008, -2/+2Yes but but but see. . . those five games are a w e s o m e .
- geocar, on 07/23/2008, -8/+5Finally, some solid proof that gamers don't know ***** about video games.
- sshuman, on 07/23/2008, -24/+4Biggest load of crap I've ever seen. This is the flaw of Metacritic: it's only as good as what you put into it.
- UltramegaOK, on 07/23/2008, -6/+55I know its not on the list, but the Dreamcast excelled in all of those categories.
- 1timeuser, on 07/23/2008, -2/+17dugg for Dreamcast.
- yellowswan, on 07/23/2008, -3/+18It's true. It also excelled in allowing me to plumb the depths of their rich catalogue for years after they ceased supporting it, for the cheap sum of ~21¢ per game.
- JakeyG14, on 07/23/2008, -2/+8As did the PS2 and the SNES (well bar FPS's probably).
- apetrie, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4I loved my dreamcast, best money I've ever spent on a console. It was so far ahead graphically, the games were amazing. *sheds a tear*
- SolidBones, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3I still play my Dreamcast, and it holds true to its playing value, but you realize it's age every time you hear it go "VVVVVVRRRR! VV-VVV--VRRRRRR!!" when it's trying to load a game.
- kidathinnes, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3what is this dream cast you speak of?
- coyote1284, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8It exists in a parallel dimension where Sega makes consoles, instead of Microsoft. Theorists refer to this dimension as "The 90s", where George W. Bush is not Emperor of Americanna, not even a political figure, and Iraq is a peaceful nation lead by the benevelent Saddam Hussein.
- kidathinnes, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3tell me more! tell me more! i want to live in this dream cast time!
- DraxusD, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Oh it was a wondrous time, cell phones were 2 inches thick, everyone had dialup and animated gifs thrived.
- Rikm, on 07/23/2008, -15/+94In some of the categories PS3 doesn't even have more than 5 games according to Metacritic (platform 4 and RPG 5) which puts the Xbox at an advantage.
Also if you look at RPGs, Xbox gets to count Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and the 2 DLC expansions as separate titles making 3 of the top-5, while PS3 only counts Oblivion, even though on the PS3 you can get the whole package on a single disc
Metacritic's categories are messed up too counting Bioshock, The Orange Box, GoW, Halo 3 and CoD:4 as both 3PS and FPS making the top-5 in both genres for Xbox the same right now (although according to the graphs the scores are different so maybe the top games weren't the same when the data were collected.)
tl;dr
The author spent more time playing with Excel's graph styles than making sure he had good quality data.
***Full disclosure, I have an Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and gaming PC so don't give a ***** which platform is "best".- Highen, on 07/23/2008, -6/+1I can tell you witch ones a failure PS3 gj sony of making this then firing half your staff. (even the president)
- Spire3660, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2Dude...Firing Ken Kutaragi was extremely necessary, that guy does not know when to shut up. If he had kept quiet, and been a little less of a dumbass, he'd still have a job.
- dansmeek, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2yeah i don't pretend to know the sony gaming division all that well, but it seems the ps3 had a 180 degree turn around when that guy was fired.
i kinda bought my ps3 as a risky stock. didnt know how it would turn out. but i've gotten everything and some. now downloadable movies, rentable hi def. in game xmb. trophies (i guess, kinda cool). and MGS4 is just one of the greatest games i've ever played. made me totally forget about GTA4. also, some of the downloadable arcade titles are really fun. stardust HD and Pain I think are both extremely addictive.

- jimmick, on 07/23/2008, -4/+13Wii has pretty much no RPGs.
Except Zach and Wiki, but thats hardly FF material- sanderscm2, on 07/23/2008, -2/+0Is that game good? I've heard good things, but it just doesn't grab my attention when I look at it.
- enclaved, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1I picked it up for 20 at walmart a few weeks ago, and its a pretty cool puzzle game. I don't know that I'd consider it an RPG though, but I'm far from authoritative on classifying genre.
- noahgelman, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1The new Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World comes out on November first for the Wii. That's gonna be a good RPG
- Elranzer, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1The Wii has Dragon Quest Swords. It's pretty decent.
- Froderick, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I'm surprised how high the Wii scored in this guy's Excel graphs in the RPG category.

- Abomonog, on 07/23/2008, -13/+22Another example of why the PC rules. Had it been in the list it would have been the winner of all categories. The PC has had more FPS games released for it alone than the entire library of any console on that list. Start tacking on the browser games and all the little free games that get released and you get a list larger than all the consoles combined.
Console are good platforms, yes. I am not knocking them. But when compared to a PC they are rather limited.
The PC is also the place where new technologies are developed. Then that technology gets placed into the latest console.- smackhappymappy, on 07/23/2008, -3/+4Agreed 100%. If it wasn't for Microsoft borrowing HEAVILY from PC gaming, its hardware and its gaming franchises/dev's the 360 would not be as popular as it is and more likely be a turd.
It's a great time to be a pc gamer. Especially thanks to ATI releasing their latest gaming video cards for $200 (Radeon HD 4850) and easily found for $160ish after rebate.
I own and play consoles as well but I just enjoy gaming on the PC a whole hell of a lot more. - zofobread, on 07/23/2008, -1/+11It's an unfair comparison. Anytime PC games are mentioned, you're digging into 2-3 decades worth of gaming catalogue. Most of the the really great PC games have been around for years and years, while these consoles have been out what - 2 years?
There's no point comparing PC games in with a console discussion.- ZombieKiss, on 07/23/2008, -1/+12-3 decades of a solid gaming catalog should say something to you when trying to pick your next generation gaming platform.
Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii are just this gens Jaguar, 3DO, Sega CD, etc etc...
***idiot fanboy disclaimer, I do own a PS3 and yes, I am very disappointed in it. - louiedog, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2The back catalog of PC games is pretty much meaningless when deciding what platform to game on. Even an Asus eeepc can play most of it. Any console gamer has a PC capable of running Deus Ex or Half-Life or Civ II.
- Abomonog, on 07/24/2008, -0/+22-3 decades? Hardly. PC gaming didn't make it big until Doom and it got started maybe 5 years earlier. I remember consoles from as early as 1976. The original Atari and Intellivision units are both at least a decade older than the first truly mass produced X86 based PCs. In fact the first true gaming PCs didn't hit the market until after the release of the Super Nintendo and it wasn't until 1995 that gaming on the PC really started catching on.

- staticneuron, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4How many good third person shooters and action games rule the roost on PC? JRPG's? SRPG's? 2d fighters? 3d fighters? Racers?
There is a better feeling playing sertain genre's on consoles. I only miss my PC for FPS and RTS's. I love you starcraft!!!- Abomonog, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2Racers? Oh, just the entire Need for Speed series, the entire Nascar Racing series, Carmageddon, Dirt, Rfactor, and at least a dozen others I have forgotten about. The PC's steering wheel support makes them all that much more fun too.
PCs and consoles are about equal when it comes to anything RPG. The consoles do rule the fighting games but that is more because of player preference and not lack of ability. There is a PC compatible version of every console controller ever produced. I've even seen PC versions of the original Nintendo and Genesis controllers on sale before.
And if you really need to play that console game you just download an emulator for the console and go for it.
That is the reality of it. - staticneuron, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1where are the PS3, Wii and 360 emulators then? I know the PS2 one was out but it crashed at every turn. The PS1 emulator I played on had issues with many of my discs. The gamecube emulator?
Truth is the PC has its ups but it is mached in terms of experience with games and surpassed in terms of exclusives.

Sports games are especially more fun on a console though and some games you just can't get on PC (Final Fantasy being one example). Soul Calibar 4 soon, though. I'm impressed that I'm being dugg down so much - people probably think I'm a PS3 fanboy and dived for the button without thinking about it...

- Ortheos, on 07/23/2008, -7/+5Subject to change drastically in the next 1-2 years. And both the wii and ps3 have smaller game libraries than the 360 (which came out 1 year earlier) so how are these graphs looking at all factors equally?
- yellowswan, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4By looking at the available libraries as-is… it can never be 'equal' in the sense that you imply, or at least not within a timeframe where a write-up like this would be pertinent. The article seems to have a fairly pronounced 360 bent, but as it stands this is about as equal as it's going to get in the realms of lazy journalism.
- BlackWaterOp, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4In the next 1-2 years we'll be in the next generation. Why would you want to wait 1-2 years to buy this generations console...
- Ortheos, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1So the 360 is going to last just 3 years? Doubt it. It will last at least 5.
Whats funny is that the ps2 still outsells both the 360 and ps3 on a worldwide monthly basis. So much for next-generation. If this high-def generation flopped, how do you think another one just 1 year from now would do? No thanks.
As for the ps3 and wii libraries as compared to xbox360, go back 1 year in xbox360's life, and compare that library then with current ps3 and wii libraries. Since the 360 came out earlier it is logical to assume that it is further into it's lifespan and will be discontinued earlier than the other two, getting no new games anymore and the other two will be.
- Ortheos, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1So the 360 is going to last just 3 years? Doubt it. It will last at least 5.
- Monkiest, on 07/23/2008, -7/+24As much as I detest Microsoft at times, I'm a big advocate of the 360. It's a no-brainer, if your gonna invest several hundred in a console, you may as well put your money on one of the world's most wealthy corporations.
When the RROD problem started occuring, I got a new Xbox within a month, as did most people. Can you imagine if Sony had been hit with a similar problem? I doubt they would have survived such a crisis. It was a drop in the ocean to Microsoft and they will keep on plowing cash into it until it is the market leader.- DGRules, on 07/23/2008, -3/+6They're all wealthy corporations!

- geocar, on 07/23/2008, -9/+3That seems like the worst idea ever.
If you like games, you shouldn't buy an Xbox, because Microsoft has no interest in making games- only in securing monopolies. If Xbox "wins", then you can be sure Microsoft will slowly start letting the Xbox price go where it needs to be- the fact they've been losing over a billion dollars a year is something they're going to want to recoup, and once they crush Sony, how is it you think they're going to do it?- Monkiest, on 07/23/2008, -3/+1"That seems like the worst idea ever."
That's a bit melodramatic. I can think of worse ideas.
I don't think they'll ever crush Sony due to the sheer number of fanboys, and the foothold Sony has with the Japs. However, I'm pretty sure Microsoft are a safe bet and will continue to look after their customers. Just look at the revamp that's coming out soon.
- Monkiest, on 07/23/2008, -3/+1"That seems like the worst idea ever."
- philhatesyou, on 07/23/2008, -8/+2So you think the fact that MS was able to survive the release of utter ***** hardware and still be considered a serious contender is a good thing? No wonder gamers are constantly getting screwed by the companies that "serve" them... If I were making a product for a group of people who viewed it as a good thing that I could survive having ***** quality control, I too would rape them where possible.
- Temo1, on 07/23/2008, -2/+2Wait, so now we're saying that the fact that the 360 has hardware problems gives it an edge over sony? huh?

I don't know about the lot of you but when I have friends over we are always on the Wii playing something. My 360 is more of a "single player" experience even though I am usually playing something on XBL, but when I am hanging with my friends in real life we will pop in Boom Blox or Smash Bros or even Wii Sports still and have fun for hours. Maybe some of you just need more friends?

However, if you're a mature adult who can handle and enjoys real games rather than 2001 games, then Xbox360/PS3 is for you. Concentrate and game on. - Thundercat1971, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1true, though I have had lots of fun when entertaining playing Scene-It LCA or Guitar Hero. - eyefork2, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Or maybe we genuinely don't like the Wii. I have never seen the Wii as a good investment for me. One, I am too lazy for something like that, and two, there just aren't enough games on that platform that appeal to me. It's not as if everyone has always loved the Wii until now, and you can't blame others for bashing it after that abysmal showing at E3.

- EnderMB, on 07/23/2008, -9/+8As much as I love Nintendo I feel that this needs to be said.
During the N64 days there were a lack of decent third-party games when compared to the PlayStation and during the times of the Dolphin the fans were promised more third-party support and fantastic games. The Gamecube eventually turned out to be the worst console Nintendo had developed in a long time and many shops simply stopped stocking it, making it hard for those that stuck with it. Not only that but the online support was for a single game, a 'port' from the Dreamcast. Again, we were promised a great console with third-party support and online capabilities named the 'Revolution', and now we have the Wii. Yet again we have the worst online ability, a severe lack of third-party games and despite it being the most-popular console this time around a horrifying lack of depth to our game library, where Mario games are considered "appealing to the hardcore crowd."
I hate to say it but I think that Nintendo is finished as a first-party developer of consoles. They've repeatedly failed to keep promises to their fans and by further alienating those that have stuck with them all these years their credibility has vanished. I will stick with my Wii because I enjoy the few games that I have, but I will definitely not be buying a Nintendo console next time, assuming that Nintendo can get to a next generation. When Nintendo claim that their next console will have hundreds of developers and fantastic online play who will honestly believe them? Who could still be that gullible?
Next time around Nintendo might want to try and compete graphically, create an online network and get some big titles, because the casual gamers will eventually leave when the other two have ALL the big third-party titles.- geocar, on 07/23/2008, -4/+7The part you forget is that Nintendo makes money- buckets full- with every console. Microsoft loses over a billion dollars a year on their Xbox, and Sony is trying to compete with Microsoft. How do you compete with someone who can lose a billion dollars a year *every year*?
And yet, Nintendo is making buckets of money. Even with the N64. Even with the Gamecube. And obviously, especially with the Wii.
I'd say they're doing it exactly right.- philhatesyou, on 07/23/2008, -1/+10From a business perspective, certainly. However, as a gamer, I would say Nintendo has ***** up royally, and I'd like to see them feel some pain for it. I don't view pandering to the lowest common denominator to be a good thing.
- brettg102, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1Money is not made from consoles...they sell them at a loss for a reason. All next-gen consoles will be sold at a loss...to get them in peoples hands, and get them buying games and accesories, where the real money is made.
- EnderMB, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Geocar, you are correct. Nintendo are making obscene amounts of profit from their consoles. What I am saying directly involves their sales. If Nintendo have lied twice already to devoted fans why should we believe what they promise us next time? Nintendo's up-front proposal to accommodate casual gamers instead of the loyal fans that have believed in the quality of Nintendo games is probably the worst insult to gamers in video gaming history. Also, the general census amongst many gamers that play Nintendo games is that their tried-and-true franchises are starting to lose their credibility, with endless same-y Mario games, similar Zelda games, FPS Metroid games that cannot challenge the other consoles and a Mario Kart game that offers very little innovation when compared to MKDS.
Let's just face it. Nintendo is on its last legs as a gaming force. Sure, they are selling well now to the casual crowd, but what's stopping these casual gamers from wanting to go to the other consoles, especially as Microsoft and Sony will be frantically building their game libraries with excellent third-party titles. Give it another couple of years and Nintendo will have no third-party support and their sales will plummet as a result. As they are earning they'll feel the loss of sales a LOT more than the others.
All I can hope as a Nintendo fan is that the Wii is a money-making scheme to create a real console in the future, or that Nintendo gracefully drops out of the console market, becomes the best third-party developer to Microsoft and Sony and doesn't piss the company away before then. Things look great for Nintendo now, but we'll only see what shape the company is really in once the next batch of consoles come out. If Microsoft and Sony jump further into power then Nintendo are *****. - geocar, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1@philhatesyou
It's a good thing the "gamer" market is so tiny that you simply don't matter then, isn't it?
@brettg102
Nintendo doesn't sell consoles at a loss and never has.
@EnderMB
I'm a casual gamer; I go outside and have hobbies outside of the living room. Nintendo provides a service that entertains me. If "third party" vendors aren't interested in my money, they won't make games that interest me, it's that simple.
Reviewers and gamers have been predicting Nintendo's fall for over a decade, however there is a market for people who like to play games (like me). It's apparently such a big market that Nintendo is leading the "gaming world" in sales *and* income.
I hope Nintendo never makes this "real console" you want, because it will probably be at that point that I stop playing their games. You've already got your PS3 and your Xbox, I don't see why you want to ruin my "gaming" experience by taking away the only fun console. - nobelief, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2this is the reason why I think Nintendo fans are ***** retarded
Yeah, Nintendo's making a *****-ton of money. But unless you're an investor, why do you give a *****?
- sanderscm2, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4I don't think anybody can realistically think that Nintendo won't be around for the next generation. They did give the "hardcore" crowd the shaft at E3, but I'm holding off any judgments until TGS.
- fuzzynyanko, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5Nintendo advantage: girls like playing with a guy's Wii. Many hardcore gamers know this
- dandonia, on 07/23/2008, -3/+2Why would Nintendo change up their formula? They are the only console to be making profit from launch - they have outsold both competition by over 10 million units despite been out a year later than it's nearest competition.
If you look at game sales charts you will see the British sales chart (I know we are only a small group but we have no vested interest in either console) you will see the top 5 games are wii exclusives. Metal Gear Solid is #10 and is the only non Nintendo game in the top 10. Out of the top 40 games 30 of them are Nintendo and the other 10 are made up of 4x360, 5xPS3 and a PSP game.
Why on earth would they change their strategy?

They are clearly pleasing the masses - LordoftheLoo, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4I thoroughly enjoyed my gamecube. I bought mine at launch day and it lasted until the week before the 360 launched. I dont know what youre talking about, the cube had some of the best games on it
Killer 7
Time Splitters 2
Viewtiful Joe
Paper Mario
Wave Race
Super Mario Sunshine
Resident Evil 4
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Metroid Prime (also Metroid Prime 2)
F-Zero GX
Mario Kart Double Dash
Pikmin 2
Beyond Good and Evil
Animal Crossing
While not all of those games were only for gamecube, its still had some third party support. It may not have sold as the best system, but I enjoyed every moment I played my gamecube- EnderMB, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I enjoyed my Gamecube as well, but it doesn't take away from the fact that Nintendo lied about what we'd get. Compared to the other consoles third-party support for the Gamecube was awful and the best games were (again) Nintendo games. Not only that but the online support ranged from PSO to...PSO. Now we were told that the Wii would be fully online and we're stuck with friend codes and an awful online service. I'm not saying that the consoles don't generate the odd gem but the other consoles generate far better games, and at the end of the day people will feel let down by Nintendo and go to the real gaming powerhouses.
- geocar, on 07/23/2008, -4/+7The part you forget is that Nintendo makes money- buckets full- with every console. Microsoft loses over a billion dollars a year on their Xbox, and Sony is trying to compete with Microsoft. How do you compete with someone who can lose a billion dollars a year *every year*?
- cyberdash, on 07/23/2008, -3/+4Although that's mainly true, having less games doesn't put PS3 at a disadvantage. That extra 360 may have brought the total score up or down - all it would affect is the quality of the data.
- DavidGX, on 07/23/2008, -15/+12Also, FF13 on 360.
Did I say FF13 on 360?
Because we're getting FF13 on 360.- dandonia, on 07/23/2008, -8/+5So are the people with a PS3 - is the 360 getting any exclusive content because
The PS3 is getting Bioshock with Exclusive Content
Did I say Bioshock with Exclusive Content
Because People are getting Bioshock with Exclusive Content on the PS3
which is better?- Lorddias, on 07/23/2008, -4/+5The 360 is getting Star Ocean: The Last Hope, and its an exclusive.
It's a good thing I haven't gotten either console yet.
Did I say Star Ocean: The Last Hope was an exclusive? - Crazymaniacc, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1ah fffs cut it out!
- krogothwolf, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4This could go on and on and on Cause
PS3 - Gran turismo
360 - GearsoW2
PS3 - Resistance 2
360 - Some Halo game(damn you Microsoft for not tell us what it is)
PS3 - LittleBigPlanet
360 - Fable 2
PS3 - GodoW3
Seriously, if all you fanboys would just step back and take a look at things logically and unbaised you'd realized both consoles have amazing games(hopefully) coming out for each system. I didn't inculde the Wii cause well, You never know what you'll get with that system.
The Future of Gaming is looking better and better everyday! - MarkOfTheDead, on 07/23/2008, -2/+2The NES has Battletoads
Level 3 might have been the spawn of Satan, but seriously, it's Battletoads.
The NES. It has Battletoads. - DavidGX, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1FF13 on 360, definitely.
- Lorddias, on 07/23/2008, -4/+5The 360 is getting Star Ocean: The Last Hope, and its an exclusive.
- dandonia, on 07/23/2008, -8/+5So are the people with a PS3 - is the 360 getting any exclusive content because
- paross2, on 07/23/2008, -3/+5A different style Microsoft Excel graph for each genre? That's plain annoying if you ask me... (buried)
- brandonAll, on 07/23/2008, -6/+1what fighting games does xbox have that the ps3 doesn't? DOA is borderline rock paper scissors with 3d models
- dandonia, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Street Fighter 2, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
- o0joshua0o, on 07/23/2008, -5/+9I agree the Wii has tons of shovelware (probably because it's the cheapest to develop for), but it's still worth owning for the games that aren't shovelware. I also think the Wii MotionPlus holds great potential.
- Tahiri, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1MotionPlus? I buried you cause you're excited to buy a product that will give you the functionality Nintendo promised Wii would have in the first place.
- thePTS, on 07/23/2008, -13/+5buried for console crap
- Carrot1991, on 07/23/2008, -3/+7Bollocks, what 360 platformers are we talking about here?
- protogenxl, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2Where are the Strategy Games?
- PopASquatt, on 07/23/2008, -7/+2"You can probably tell which console has been winnning everything, but dishing out some trophies makes it clear. Did we say trophies? Maybe that should be Achievements. Yup - looks like Xbox 360 has trumped PS3 in almost every category."
Ok, I was ready to agree with this article until I read the final part, now I'm under the influence that the "Excel pro" is just being a biased jerk. To hell with the numbers! If people like THAT GUY are pointing them out, then their verbal diarrhea should amount to absolutely nothing. - galvo, on 07/23/2008, -3/+1http://static.gamesradar.com/images/mb/GamesRadar/ ...
- FrankTheTank17, on 07/23/2008, -4/+1It'd be nice if we can easily see what the top 5 games for each genre is for each system...
Also the ratings are the average of actual review writers. I'm more interested in seeing what the average gamer thinks of each game.- Coffeedemon, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Go to GameFaqs and GameRankings and start aggregating the user reviews.
The average gamer is going to be more biased than the average reviewer. Look at all the hyperbole we find every day here. Everyone is so caught up in defending their investment that they can't think straight. As if you need to jump to the defense of a corporation to prove your own self worth and skill as a purchaser of stuff.- fuzzynyanko, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1Even worse, Gametrailers. Posting anything against the PS3 there is like saying something blasphemous about Jesus
- Coffeedemon, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Go to GameFaqs and GameRankings and start aggregating the user reviews.
- austria, on 07/23/2008, -5/+12Damn I bought a Wii, had fun playing it all last weekend and now I find out it sucks...
- zetsurin, on 07/23/2008, -7/+5This is amusing to think of the absolute Wii frenzy that swept the Digg/Web2.0 crowd. I and many others were chastized for choosing a PS3 ... but my my look how things have been turning out. All the Wii owners have to brag about is sales figures, but unfortunately those figures just means more shovelware is heading your way.
- nicko68, on 07/23/2008, -2/+7The Wii's numbers are going to be dragged down because it has a LOT of shovelware. It's easy to develop for, it's the best selling console this generation, so they're getting a lot of rushed crap or cheap PS2 ports.
Who cares what the average score across all games is? The more important thing is does your console have enough titles that you enjoy playing? I'm the type who would rather have a smaller number of good games that I keep going back to than boxes full of games that have no replay value.
And yeah... look at me, I can make all kinds of graphs. I am so leet!- kingmanic, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Ultimately final approval lies with Nintendo and the games out for the wii fall below even the PS2 standards for software. The difference is the PS2 had periodic AAA third party titles while the Wii only gets AAA Nintendo titles and shovelware otherwise. Nintendo is not very critical for it's criteria to approve a game because they want to fill the stores and make the money before people get sick of the wii. Unlike the "core" gamer audience the "mainstream" are generally have shorter attention spans for a product.
Personally I think the wii is the worst thing to happen to gaming because it's taking a lot of personnel at the major studios off of interesting projects on onto "carnival adventure" type *****. It may expand their income but it'll certainly diminish or slow the release of AAA games.- nicko68, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1And what exactly is a AAA game? The latest FPS or GTA clone?
I agree that third parties are having a hard time with the Wii, with some notable exceptions (e.g. Guitar Hero, Boom Blox, Zak & Wiki) and that is unfortunate. - kingmanic, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2I'd define AA as major releases with high production values.
Notable 2nd year PS2 third party AAA: (2001)
FFX
Devil May Cry
Grand Turismo 3
Metal Gear 2
RE: Code Veronica
Soul Reaver 2
Tekken 4
Virtua Fighter 4
Zone of Enders
This is the second year of theWii's life and how many third party AAA are there?
- nicko68, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1And what exactly is a AAA game? The latest FPS or GTA clone?

- drgirlfriend, on 07/23/2008, -8/+1Even though I have all of the GTA series, when it came to GTA IV, I bought the xbox 360. Why? Well---because it rules.
That is all.- ScionX, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I just prefered the controller. Other than that they're the exact same game.
- Spire3660, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Free online forever vs. (paid) Live. Big difference to me. :)
