Why the Super Mario movie is a Masterpiece
destructoid.com — No, I'm not being ironic, or corny, or funny. Neither am I drunk, stoned, nor under the influence of outside forces requiring me to like the Super Mario Bros movie anymore than I already do. I simply wish to inform you, the reader, as to the reasons why it seems to get an undeservedly bad vibe from the gaming community at large, and why would shou

- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39Oh crap. Reading this made me want to see the movie again, although I'm getting the feeling that all the coolness is going to go away very fast if I do it. =/
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah.. I gotta say, that scene where princess' head comes through the rock wall scared the absolute S**T out of me when I was smaller. As did the goombas..
But I don't think I'll go watch it again. Once in a lifetime is probably enough I think, despite it being a 'masterpiece'..
Sheesh.. Next they'll be touting 'Man Droid'..
Jimzip :D - Four20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2shoot, i loved it. . .but im just a stoner. so i guess that cancels me out in this equation
- flimbabulous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I enjoyed it as well. I'd love to see a thousand different takes on the game.

- daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24I loved this movie as a kid, I also had the "glow-in-the-dark sewer chase" poster. I just watched it again recently and I gotta say the movie is a masterpiece compared to most of the trash that has come out of Hollywood in this decade.
- TheElectricMonk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7***** yeah this movie ruled, i ***** loved it
- Ujjay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I can't say it was a bad movie, but the Koopas creeped me out as a kid.
- Linksan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Trust the fungus!
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the fungus are among us.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -15/+7No way. Absolutely the worst movie ever. Awful then, and the odor has only fermented with time.
- Oxygen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38How could anyone not like a movie with Dennis Hopper and John Leguizamo in it?
- jawbreaker4fs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Agreed. I couldn't help thinking about Mario Bros. when Land of the Dead came out.
- lancer6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I was gonna say how could someone not like a movie that spawned the acting career of John Leguizamo.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I loved how big bertha was portrayed and I thought those boots were cool.
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I loved this movie since I was a child.
- soulpiercer7, on 10/12/2007, -19/+10this movie sucks. it's a abomination to the mario name.
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3it's an abomination on the scale of the CD-I Mario and Zeldas
- Aaryn015, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3OK, Super Mario is a cool part of my Childhood too, but can someone please explain why the hell there's been 4-5 front page Diggs on the game/movie in the last couple days? Doesn't bother me none, just curious......
- SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"THE game"? You know, Mario is still alive and kickin...
- jodokast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Mario is THE video game of video games.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"OK, Super Mario is a cool part of my Childhood too" because almost all diggers can say that.
- Aaryn015, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sheesh, talk about anti-social.
It was an honest question, and not one of you answered it.
Let me rephase: I've been digging for several months, and I was curious as to what has happened to get 4-5 Mario diggs in a week all of a sudden...... - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mario is the defining franchise of all video games. No character is more recognized worldwide than Mario. Mario IS video games. Grandmothers all over the world refer to every video game as "mario" (pronouncing it mary-o usually) and ever console as a "nintendo" for a reason.
- montiff, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39This movie totally owns.
I remember it being on imdb's bottom 100. I had to of course give it a 10.
Wait this gives me an idea .... 1000 or so diggs/votes on imdb would give this movie the props its needs.
to vote: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108255/ratings- Moebaca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Just did that now
- Ujjay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You do realize IMDB filters out the voters who only vote 10/1, right?
- lansuggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Throw some 9s and 8s in there to make it legit!
- kalpol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That graph looks pretty funny now - 1.8% gave it a 9 and then BAM!!!! ALL 10s BITCHES!!!!
- smish420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm definatley doing that now, good idea man!
- coonzel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2/voted. I recommend everybody else do the same, shed some light to a great classic!
- contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I bought it on DVD for $7. CANADIAN.
- montiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Love it, good idea. They do have teh filters.
*changing to a 9er.
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Most of the people who love it including myself only loved it because they were little kids and it was the Mario movie.
- night141, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Ok. Where's the Torrent?
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Right here?
http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/806270/Super_Mario_Bros_1993_NTSC_KVCD_TUS_Release_By_BluX - bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks. Never seen this movie but now I do. Never came out where I was from as far as my knowledge goes.
- SirBriggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm so very sorry bergur1.
What? That's not sarcasm.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Right here?
- tumbleweed05, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9i didn't think it was that bad.
- zephster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I loved this movie, i've watched it like 100 times.
- mocherz, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5I think I hate it more now.
- gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This is why I read Destructoid.
- Karted, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I love this movie its my favorite game to movie, movie.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I bet the same guy is going to write an article about how great the DOOM movie was.
- n3mi5y5, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Dennis Hopper FTW!
- BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7The last time I saw it I was pretty young, and when I first saw it I was like... 6. But despite those biases, I really want to see it again and I am quite certain I won't hate it at all. I remember it pretty well, but the specifics of this article made me realize just how ridiculous the hate for it is. I suppose the adult version of the story which would require Mario and Luigi smoking some mushrooms would actually be better, but for what it was and had to be it was great to me.
There are a lot of famously hated movies, and none of them bother me in the least. I don't expect the world out of any movie and somehow doing so allows me to enjoy even what some would call evil incarnate.
I am attempting to see this again right now if for no other reason than out of spite to the haters. I demand a sequel. - donsherio, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1umm.... Ironic?? How can u be ironic? i think ur looking for the word Sarcastic. v.v
- Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23http://farm1.static.flickr.com/166/370653796_9e8a5619a5_o.jpg
They need to do Mario in that style.- triont, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14It's like Mario Meets American McGee's Alice. That would be awesome.
- Jassman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9That picture is amazingly cool... Much more interesting to me than Mona Lisas and Campbell's soup cans...
- Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yeah, it is definitely one of coolest styles of art I have seen yet.
- jessejoedotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is there a link to that artist?
- TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Oops, bury
- hokiefantony, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Obviously, the author of this article is a Massive TOOL.
- smish420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3^ good example of the pot calling the kettle black
- Rambyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Whew, it's good to know I'm not the only one that liked that movie.
- st3vo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Great movie, saw it in the theaters as a kid, enjoyed the movie ever since.
- psyops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8So it was the SuperScope De-evolution gun that got into the hands of the terrorists who then zapped the entire white house administration.
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8I dunno. I have to disagree. Adaptation movies work because they remind us of their source material in some way. The Mario movie had so very little to do with the game. The koopas looked nothing like koopas, why did they even bother to call them koopas?
Bowser is a big freakin dino with spikes on his back, not a human with a freaky bald-cap. Mario 64 was were the Bowser look was perfected. Bower is supposed to be big and lumbering. The bowser in the movie was too human-like to be taken in the context he originated in.
Yoshi, the most beloved dinosaur in gaming, was ruined. Yoshi isn't supposed to look like velociraptor. You shouldn't ***** your pants when you see him, your enemies should ***** THEIR pants when they see him because they all know they can't stand up to the awesomeness that is Yoshi. Yoshi was supposed to be a cute dino with a huge ass nose and a fluffy red saddle, not a realistic creep with razor teeth. Yoshi doesn't even need teeth, he eats his enemies whole.
The kingdom isn't meant to be dank and dirty. It's supposed to be vibrant with bright colors. This is where the entire FEEL of the game was completely lost and turned into a more modernish sci-fi flick.
And the plot completely goes outside of Mario territory. The plot shouldn't have been any more complicated or danger ridden than Mario Sunshine. You should be saving the princess and the kingdom from Bowser's rule, or you should be saving your favorite vacation spot from loosing its shine. No saving the world or inter-dimensional travel or crap like that. People criticized the movie for being too depressing and scary for children? Maybe because Mario, the game, was never depressing OR scary.
Oh, and mario shouldn't need any special shoes to jump. He's friggin mario. He'll jump 20 feet in the air if he friggin wants to.- dchaosdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i wonder if "nibbler" from futurama is based on yoshi? cute, cuddly, eats enemies whole...
- icepick314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5need this on blu-ray/HD-DVD....
NOW!!! - bcardarella, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Great movie
- dvsbastard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"No, I'm not being ironic, or corny, or funny. Neither am I drunk, stoned, nor under the influence of outside forces requiring me to like the Super Mario Bros movie anymore than I already do."
Buried due to blatant lying in the description! :P
The excessively and ridiculously poor representation of the Goomba's is what shattered my childhood hopes for that movie! :(- dchaosdx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7is "burying the article for (insert lame reason here)" the new trend on digg nowadays?
- dvsbastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is misinterpreting humour the new trend on digg nowadays?
- dodgyc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No it's always been like that. To both of your questions.
- m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -1/+4Heh, I can't say that I totally agree... but dug for depth of justification :p
- Calder0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"...But, who is that small, chained dinosaur in Daisy's cell? It's Yoshi! How cool! And he has at least one of his abilities from the game (his long tongue), and he actually uses it to help Daisy (he trips up Koopa's bitch of a wife and helps Daisy escape)! Of course, he gets stabbed in the throat soon after..."
OMG lmfao
I guess I forgot that scene, but the way this was written really caught me off-guard lol
What a great read. - rusackas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2All I honestly remember about the movie was that Joe Satriani did some music for it. I miss shredder guitarists these days.
- DrunkardRP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He totally had me... until he said Serenity was one of the movies begging for a sequel.
My friends and I always joked that stupid people would watch the movie, and then say "Hey, you know what? They should make a TV series to continue the story!"
Sigh, FOX messes up a lot of good TV shows.- heinousjay, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5But every now and again, they do the right thing and cancel a piece of crap like firefly.
- jhubsch1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Buried as inaccurate.
This movie is NOT a masterpiece.
I read the article and, instead of it making me appreciate the movie more, it made me question Destructoid as reliable.- Empyrean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4lol n00b
- xerokitsune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The movie was not bad but I was not a big fan at the time, mostly because at the time I was hoping for a more accurate interpretation than just using the names of the SMB characters.
- Zaetha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If I could digg this twice, I'll do it. A truly masterpiece if you compare it with some UweBollesque movies.
We thought a video game movie can't be as bad as this film. We were wrong... veeeery wrong. - Zzone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Gave John Leguizamo his start."
Ha! And what casting director saw him in this sham of a film and said "I must have him for Carlito's Way!"
Nite Owl was the film that put him on the map, and even before that he had to bust his ass to get that role. A simple IMDB search could have avoided this stupid rant of mine. - choopie911, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ugh, I despised that movie. Nothing about it was good. The only thing that looked like it was supposed to was the bob-omb, which was too small anyways. They took the basic premise, and names, and just made up whatever the hell they wanted to fill in the blanks/ character design. Buried.
- Hylian60, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1When I first saw this movie I loved it. I looked everywhere for it on tape, and when I finally found I was ecstatic. I watched a couple times then, when I was over my odd obsession. I didn't watch it again for a long time. But when I did, I liked it just as much as when I saw it the first time.
- plapointe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Luigi: That’s incredible. There used to be dinosaurs in Brooklyn?
Mario: Don’t get excited, Luigi. There used to be Dodgers, too."
LOL - Ndric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"the movie joins the ranks of The Italian Job and Serenity as one of those films whose hypothetical sequel had great potential that was never realized"
There's going to be a sequel, The Brazilian Job - AmunRa666, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Super Mario was indeed a masterpiece and it still is, I remember seeing it with my family at a drive in theatre it was a great time. I even recall a really funny story about the the movie they showed after it and my uncle told me not to look at the screeen so i turned my head around only to see Jason from friday the 13th slaughter some dudes in a resturant in Jason in Manhatten. Now I dont care what my uncle said about what was going on the screen in front of us, but the real action and my love of horror movies started that same night.
- theGOG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i still think it was a little weird... making a movie about a video game.
- dvsbastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was always kind of hoping they would release the "Super Mario Bros Movie Game"...
That way we could play a game, based on a movie that was based on a game!
/I have a headache! :( - TrancePhreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They have Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game
- dvsbastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was always kind of hoping they would release the "Super Mario Bros Movie Game"...
- yor1001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1omg the super mario movie was horible, it degrades video game idols.
- 8-perf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Gonna have to throw my Digg in on this one. 'Course, I'm kinda biased. For what its worth, I'm actualy proud to say that I worked on this movie. It was my first big "show" after moving to Wilmington, NC. Got to work in the SFX dept., and I and 5 others were responsible for ALL of the fungus, as well as some work done on the "Thwomp Stompers", and police cars. Sadly, we all went uncredited. But, I do have my memories, pics, scripts, and a few props left over. Anybody got ??'s, just ask. There are a few pics on my website too.
- buc03, on 11/06/2007, -0/+0What's your website? I would really like to get a copy of the script. I would like to perform a cutting from this script for an event for College Forensics.
- kidcodea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2destructoid is learning a few things from robert zuma the HYPE and no delivery master.
Sad they wanna get hits with lame articles... - freetyme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Thing that disappointed me most was Bowser and the Goombas I can understand Hollywood having to tweak things a little but come on, those are kind of essential things, Bowser is a big fat baddy with spikes who has a fetish for stealing Princesses, and Goombas are little baddies with teeth. Its that simple, though I didn't mind the whole Mario and Luigi actually being Plumbers thing. Wasn't bad for a movie based on a video game.
dugg it.- Kookami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While I agree, I was disappointed at the appearance of the Goombas, Bowser and all when I was really young, when you contrast it to more recent attempts at video game movies, the fact that so many nods to the games are in it at all makes it pure gold.
