Wii Mic Rumored- Harry Potter will use it.
joystiq.com — ...breaking rumor has EA working on a Harry Potter game using the mic in conjunction with gestures to cast spells. Now that's the type of Wii title we're talking about! "Wingardium Leviosah" FTW!

My wife plays Wii with me.....
I think you are thinking of WoW players. - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35She'd be like, "Whoa, cool! I wanna play!"
- CheezIt9109, on 10/12/2007, -8/+52"Not an issue for most wii owners."
I'm assuming you say this because she will be playing already?
I'd say any Wii owner is far more likely to have a significant other than a PS3 or Xbox360 owner... I doubt it's even debatable. - johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17She'd tell me that it's her turn to play - she keeps wanting to play more Golf and Bowling. I'm seriously considering getting a second one so I can play Daddy's games between her and the kids. We can all play together during the day, but at night when I can play Resident Evil 4 or the like I have to wait until the kids are asleep - and then it eats into my "make wild passionate monkey love to my wife" time.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11If it was mine I wouldn't get to play anymore ... she's a huge potter fan.
Seriously I'm not trying to ruin your already stale joke about the social lives of game players thats been beat to death ten thousand times and now reeks of desparate comment whoring in an attempt to boost your average diggs per comment. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3"Can you imagine if your girlfriend walked in on you playing that game?"
Are you kidding? Have you met a girl who's not either a crazy neo-christian fantasy-hating chastity belt wearing virgin tease or isn't in love with Harry Potter? I didn't think so. - SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I have. However, most teenagers possibly fall on one of those categories. I'm not legally allowed to show any interest in teenage girls, so I wouldn't know.
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I already have a mic for my Wii. I got it with Mario Party 6! It plugs into the memory port.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The only reason I got a wii was because my girlfriend likes Nintendo games. I like my 360 better. Especially the upcoming games list.
- alia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"Are you kidding? Have you met a girl who's not either a crazy neo-christian fantasy-hating chastity belt wearing virgin tease or isn't in love with Harry Potter? I didn't think so."
as a neo-christian fantasy-(not really)-hating chastity belt wearing virgin tease, i can tell you it's totally possible to love harry potter also. if they come out with this, i will definately be there the first day to buy both the game and a wii. - Ndric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7May I remind you that girls actually *like* Harry Potter
- honds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The Wii is my girlfriend's! She got it on E-Bay one day, I didn't have a say in the matter. I just own most of the games and play it more :-X.
- pixelbender, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Seaman Wii anyone?
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I hate to be a grammar nazi but that is the most misleading title ever.
The Wii mic isn't rumored, it is being developed.
Harry Potter won't be using it, gamers who play the new Harry Potter game will use it.
Digg muggles who refuse to just copy the source headline verbatim deserve to be mocked. - Haohmaru, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3@tahiri
The Wii is the only game system my wife actually likes to play. - Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1What if she walked in while you were playing the Harry Potter game, holding the wiimote in one hand, and an 8x10" of that Daniel Radcliffe nude shot with the unicorn?
THEN she might be concerned. - texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now...what would she think if she walked in and you were playing THIS game: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=227

No, because most Wii owners are under the legal age limit to get married. JK - darthsteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ rarkai
My sister just announced her engagement to a man who pre-ordered the collector's edition of Burning Crusade and called in sick to work to wait in line for it the night of launch. God help us, god help us all.
- Kevinok, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2That is a very good idea.
- lonergothonline, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1A good rumour. I hope it works out, though I don't think my girlfriend will let me play on my Wii if it does.

- Gholas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There are going to be people saying that this a stupid idea, but it opens possibilities for other developers.
I would personally love to see something like this to control the attack patterns of units in an RTS, or for sound based puzzles in platformer games. - Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18This sounds great in theory, but it could be really, really frustrating if it doesn't work perfectly. Ever sat there playing Brain Age on a DS and said "Blue" about 20 times before it figured it out?
- thefirelane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes, it would be frustrating if it didn't accurately mimic the speech recognition of most magical spells!
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm not being racist/nationalist/whatever, but try saying "Brue" instead of "Blue".
- UncleCrapper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thank god I am not the only one with that problem. Eventually I just gave up on the audio component of the game and simply selected that I was not in a quiet enough environment.
Voice recognition still has a long way to go. - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3try saying blue in a deeper voice, I have no problems with it but my sister does, according to the manual higher voices arent as accurate

- TheVtHokie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22A mic used for communication in the future online games will be necessary. What fun will Smash Bros Brawl be without being to scream "Pikachu just knocked you the ***** out!"
- sil5er, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1no sarcasm at all! :) although hints about my caps use is noted.... learning ... ;) and it looks like I picked a wrong place to put this reply, darn it ... sorry all.
BobMysterioso: yeah, I would absolutely avoid Ouija boards, for sure.
Otto: well, call it 'magic' or whatever you want, but a LOT of our big leaders do believe it, and do worship satan. (can I use caps on just one word per post? heh)
and how can anyone 'prove' that magic isn't real. sounds like you're asking me to trust you ... I wouldnt ask that of you. But I can offer some help in showing you there is more to life than what you can see and touch.
EG emotions have frequencies. disease (or healing!) can be transmitted by energy (non-ionising..). in fact ... a large body of physics is dedicated to describing stuff you cant see or touch.
wow, what an emotional response we have today.. but discussion is good, so I'm satisfied. thanks for all input, even if disagreeing with me ... I hardly think _that_ is absurd. - Orlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I saw "Mic" and "Pikachu" in your post and had horrible, horrible N64 flashbacks
- Pikachelsea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, I'm banking on online Wii games NOT having headphone communication. I don't need to hear a bunch of 12-year old boys swearing up a storm in their annoying prepubescent voices because they lost.
- sil5er, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1no sarcasm at all! :) although hints about my caps use is noted.... learning ... ;) and it looks like I picked a wrong place to put this reply, darn it ... sorry all.
- sil5er, on 10/12/2007, -48/+2I would steer WELL clear of this trickery.
just like a REAL occult ritual. thats EXACTLY what I want my kids, friends and family doing.
TV is bad enough, in its 'passive' participation, but this just sounds like pure nasty.
and yeah, if no-one had guessed it, I'm one of those 'crazy' people who think it is no coincidence that a magic wand was traditionally made from HOLLY-wood.
any others in agreement here?- weside, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7No, and I'm an ultra-conservative Republican.

It had BETTER be sarcasm... - batman88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Uh.......
Where DO I start WITH this one? Maybe the STRANGE capitalization. Must BE the crazy PEOPLE at Microsoft FORCING them to PRESS the SHIFT key. - BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@sil5er
Its people like you, assuming you are serious - that are so absurd. I do like your all caps for emphasis, almost brought me over to your way of thinking.
Do you also think the Ouija board is evil? I mean, is it the pressed cardboard board? The uttering of nonsense? Perhaps the special rare earth magnifying glass made of plastic. Oh, is it the felt pads on the button of the ancient plastic thingy you put your fingers on? Oh wait! Its the ink used in the mass production from China of the board. That is what makes it evil! Or maybe, Milton Bradly isn't in the occult and its a stupid board game mass produced in China for crazy halfwits like yourself to be upset over.
Uttering nonesense into a plastic wii-mic while waving a wii-mote about is hardly going to conjure a central vortex to hell in your living room. That would totally be bad for sales. Also, everyone knows its also about the shape your fingers are in during the spell.. and the poor miis just have marbles for hands.. no fingers at all. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10>>>"just like a REAL occult ritual"
Ummm... I hate to break this to you, but magic is not real.
Sorry that you had to find out this late in life and all, but everybody has to wake up sometime. - freetyme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Bobmysterioso
I think there's a difference between the board itself and where it was made and what you do with it. I mean a lot of people use it to call on spirits, dead people, demons, yadda yadda, that's where concern woud probably come in with children (and other people) playing it.
I sorta get the Potter-hating but you gotta remember even Christian others used fantasy elements, I mean there's witches, and fantasy elements in the Chronicles of Narnia and LOTR, but then again in the Harry Potter series..they got BROOMS!
If this is true will other consoles have the mic? These games usually get Harry-Potterized over ever system imaginable. - RobertKC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Digg up for Bob..
"Uttering nonesense into a plastic wii-mic while waving a wii-mote about is hardly going to conjure a central vortex to hell in your living room." made my day.. thanks! - missmorgie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it is just plain silly to think that children would somehow be instilled with evil by playing a game or reading a book.
Good trolling though.

I think I speak for many when I say: Open your eyes and close your mouth.
Personally, I think that inventing a generally new way to control games is revolutionary, even if it doesn't fix global warming. - Orlex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2You're right, companies should no longer be implementing anything that has been done in any way at all.

- deepmenace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is this EA shoehorning a wii-specific feature into a multi-format title or making a wii-specific game?
big difference when it comes to the playtest. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sounds cool....too bad it's an EA game.
- Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ummm.... Manhunt used a mic, no? The 360 comes with a mic and headset. The PS3 supports USB and bluetooth headsets... Using a mic to cast spells on the Wii just doesn't seem like that great of an idea. Enjoy that big boss battle at the end where you call out for a heal spell and the voice recognition thinks you said steal so it goes in and steals some coins from the boss.
- benramadan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I did exactly this for my uni project last year, themed around HP. Wand was built around a Bluetooth enabled gumstix with an accelerometer on board, and a Bluetooth microphone, which combined the gesture and the spoken spell to control a virtual environment and a couple of light switches. In fact, Wingardium Leviosa was my main demonstration spell.
Probably should have patented it. *Kicks self repeatedly* - Martiny2m, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1At least it wont be on xbox 360, it wont understand what people are saying the way Microsoft do their stuff.

- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't think the Wii's processor can handle the load it would need to acurately recognize the spells. Voice recognition isn't an easy task - especially when you don't have the luxury of getting the user to input training data.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I dont know, nintendogs and brain training anyone?
still reckon it doesnt have the power
dragon naturally speaking on win95, etc - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, if the DS can do it, the Wii can easily do it. People just like talking about the Wii as if it's a 386 or something.

- henrythehorse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1After being expected to dish out money for 4 Wii-motes, 4 Nun-chucks, 4 Classic Controllers & 4 Game Cube Controllers in order to get the full experience out of the Wii I don't think getting my hands on a seventeenth one is high priority. I'd have to say Wii is the most over-hyped and over-rated console ever released and on top of that its low price justification is marketing BS because of the many hidden fees, like previously stated, one of them is its many over-priced controllers.
- MikeD606, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2you dont need 4 classic controllers, and you dont need 4 game cube controllers (unless you want to play 4 player gamecube games). So here is the real total:
Wii: $250
3 extra wii motes and 3 nunchucks (1 of each included in the wii): $180
1 classic controller: $20
1 Game cube controller (not sure on this, but I'm sure you can ebay one for $10)
total: $460
xbox 360 + 3 extra controllers = $550 (premium system) $450 (core system), but if you get the core you'll need a $30 memory card so its really $480
ps3, well you get the point is still cheaper.
- MikeD606, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2you dont need 4 classic controllers, and you dont need 4 game cube controllers (unless you want to play 4 player gamecube games). So here is the real total:
