Wii reaches 4.02 million consoles sold worldwide
vgcharts.org?wii=4.02 — Wii is nearly halfway towards Microsofts total Xbox 360 installed base in just two and a half months. After shipping 3.19 million by the end of 2006, Nintendo have sold through a further 830,000 Wii consoles around the world to pass the 4 million mark just before the end of January. Nintendo aim to ship 6 million by March.

Doesn't anyone agree?- Wii69, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28Erm, yeah right! 4 million people in less than 3 months must be some kind of record
- SquirrelOnFire, on 10/12/2007, -7/+62Actually, I know 2 people who camped out for a Wii (besides myself) -- "sucked in by the hype", you might say, and eight who, after playing one, said "huh, i thought that was going to suck, but where can i find one?"
That being said, Why is the headline for 4.02 and not 4.0? Do we jump for joy with every 20K sold? 4.2 i could understand, given it's factor-of-ten relationship with everyones favorite number... - APHughes, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22Everyone I showed the Wii to have been very impressed and would rather have one than a PS3 or the 360, that is, until Halo 3.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -8/+137Why is it SO HARD to admit that Nintendo brought a great console to the market?
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -14/+86As a hardcore gamer, my opinion on the Wii is that it sucks...

I agree for the most part with that article, there is certainly room for improvement...
Hopefully many improvements can be downloaded over time and the games will improve as developers make better use of the controllers.
Still I bought the Wii and recommend it to others and would buy it again. - Pentagonian, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3its half the price... SHOCKING
- Avalontor, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4So I'll assume wiiboys are digging me down because they can't handle being beaten in sales records until someone comments on a mistake I made.
wii69 asked "4 million people in less than 3 months must be some kind of record"
I answered no, actually the PS2 sold more then 4 million in many of it's quarters. This is what digg is all about I guess. what fun! - lxcid, on 10/12/2007, -22/+3Well, specification wise, it suck. ;)
The NPC can't get smarter with Wii.
It can with XBox360 and PS3.
I would get bored swinging the controller and playing the same thing over and over again. ;)
Losing raw processing power is like losing AI, Physic, Large world, special effects, etc...
How hard can it be to develop another controller that imitate wii? ps3 had done it.
Now, isn't that some wii should be thinking about? - AEGYPT, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6@ SqueakyWheel
By 'the hype' you mean the prospect of having fun?
Who are these 'Real gamers' you refer to? If they're such purists wouldn't they prefer a mind stretching game of chess?

- suprememilo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3i got "sucked in by the hype" waited in line all day at walmart for one on the Saturday before it came out, played with my wii for a month, got sick of it, and sold it

- goodoldharris, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5From the slate article: "This is the Wii's biggest letdown — you don't need to stand up, leap around, or otherwise leave the warm embrace of your couch. The console senses motion, but compared with the full-body workout of a game like Dance Dance Revolution, you're not getting any kind of exercise at all."
That's the biggest letdown? Who wants to be jumping around all the time while they play a video game? If I want real exercise, I'll go play real tennis. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I don't get people who find fault in the fact you can operate the Wii with small movements. If you think it's more fun (like I do) to make big movements then do it, nobody is stopping you! WTF???
(sarcasm) God, the Wii would be so much better if you had to use big gestures, but nobody is holding a gun to my head, so I'll just flick my wrist. (/sarcasm) - biff198, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, it's true that there is room for improvement, and yes, it is true that you don't have to do full motions for games for the Wiimote to detect them, but then again, it's the fact that you CAN do the full motions in games like Wii Sports that makes it so appealing!
Sure, we all love the realism of hitting A/B/X (or whatever) to swing a bat, who in their right mind is going to do the motions of swinging to perform the swing!?
BTW, if the Wii required that you use full gestures to perform the action, that would really turn off many people that Nintendo is targeting, such as the elderly. Small gestures makes it fun for those who can't do the full ones, and large gestures are fun for pretty much everyone else... - ldkronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Re: the slate article
His being disappointed that the wiimote doesn't behave like a lightgun (in that you can't "sight" down it to point at a particular part of the screen) is very much like being disappointed that your mouse's position on the mousepad doesn't directly map to the cursor's position on the screen. That's may not be how it works, but it doesn't make it any less effective.
Pointing with the wiimote is every bit as intuitive as pointing with a mouse. . Of all the games I've played so far, the best example of this has to be Trauma Center. After about 10 seconds of play, you can point instantly to exactly where you want to without even thinking about it.
In some ways, a mouse has the advantage of resting on a surface and thus being more steady/precise. However, to me the wiimote has the advantage of feeling slightly more natural than a mouse. For the most part, though, they are about even in terms of usability.
The rest of the article, however, is mostly disappointment that the Wii doesn't FORCE you to flail your limbs like a maniac. I don't see that as being a negative. Some games (everything in Wii sports) I really LIKE to get into the game, and it makes it a lot more fun. For some games (Zelda) I just like to sick down and wiggle my hands instead of making full blown sword swings. - GeorgeTuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That website is negative on almost everything, you can be a misery guts just like them but don't expect me to join you.

the most preferred tracked data comes from the NDP group, but even those are a little off, as they don't count the biggest chain retailer, Walmart. reason being that walmart doesn't share their "confidential" sales data. but that's neither here nor there. either way, vg charts is what its owners call a "close estimate," but it's probably best to accept the info with a grain of salt. or two. - Master444, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7At least it's not Nexgen wars.

- JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -30/+7Wiis enjoyed = Wiis sold / diggs given to Wii articles per day.
This currently puts the number of Wiis enjoyed at 2500 or so. The more articles Dugg up, the less people are obviously out there enjoying the Wii. Do you see 850,000 World of Warcraft articles here every day despite there being twice as many active World of Warcraft players as Wii console owners? No. Because people are out there playing the Burning Crusade 26 hours a day and don't have time to seek out any news article out there pushing their agenda about how great World of Warcraft is.
I neither have WoW anymore nor a Wii.- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Comment of the day right there.
He makes so much sense. Damn, I wish I was as smart as that dude. Woo boy is he a genius! - thedazman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Or maybe people are posting and reading and digging articles about the Wii from their Wiis... using the internet channel.
- chinaman1472, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0850,000? Try 2.4+ million BC owners. But you still have a point.
- JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2The calculation and WoW references were a joke. The point was that if you enjoy your Wii, enjoy it instead of promoting the Wii's greatness all day. Would you get tired of seeing "There are now over 400,000,000 Christian" articles every day? I know I would. It feels that way seeing the Wii stuff.
And yes, people want to see the stories so they get Dugg up -- only because the userbase here consists of an age group drawn to the Wii. This is not a worldwide phenomenon.
To respond to chinaman, the 850,000 was 850,000 *articles*, not players. - monobrau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I neither have WoW anymore nor a Wii."
Ahh, so you're post-op? Whatever floats your boat, buddy. I'm not here to judge... - macweirdo42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or there's those of us who still haven't managed to get ahold of one yet... So we have nothing better to do than sit around posting articles and talking about it. Not that I'm posting articles or anything, but come on, the fact that there are so many people that want a Wii but can't get one yet has gotta factor in somehow.
- suprememilo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2wow ownz the wii hands down.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"The calculation and WoW references were a joke. The point was that if you enjoy your Wii, enjoy it instead of promoting the Wii's greatness all day. Would you get tired of seeing "There are now over 400,000,000 Christian" articles every day? I know I would..."
If there were a highly popular religion section here on Digg it would be natural for there to be a lot of articles about Christianity. Digg *does* have a Gaming section, and the hottest console at the moment is the Wii. What do you expect? The number of consoles sold is important information. It is the single most important factor for predicting developer support.
"...It feels that way seeing the Wii stuff."
It feels the same way having to read complaints about the number of Wii stories in every single article on the topic too. - Nizerifin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4See... the Wii isn't really marketed to the uber-hardcore mmorpg crowd who masturbate and eat while playing WoW. If you've read anything about the Wii you'd probably know this.
And a side note, the walmart I work at received 28 Wiis the other day and sold them all out within 12 hours. Our PS3s are piling up and some were moved to the security room in the back because they were just taking up space. What I've learned recently in microeconomics class kinda has me surprised that Sony thought it could charge 600 bucks for a console. The demand is there, but the high price excludes many who would like to buy one. They should have probably done some marketing research first, yeah?
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Comment of the day right there.

- theragu40, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I had actually heard that it surpassed 4 million a couple weeks ago. Of course, that's unsubstantiated, but I guess the numbers from vgcharts aren't exactly scientific either. Anyway, GO WII!
- VMark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Can we get some good games for the Wii now?
I have Zelda and Wii Sports (of course) and purchased Wario and was extremely disappointed (and I loved the Gamecube version).
I have a Best Buy gift card that I am just waiting to use.- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I know how you feel (although I think Wario is a blast). Sadly we won't see Super Paper Mario until April, and I'm not sure what major releases are coming out in between. Thank god for the VC (Contra III, baby!)
- JTorquido, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11You must not have any friends. Or you don't get inebriated enough. Warioware: Smooth Moves is rockin' with a couple friends and a 24 pack.
- garstman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Why not try some old Gamecube games. There are many out there that you can buy for $5 -10 at EB Games. Eternal Darkness is a favorite of mine
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's how all console launches are, even though this has been a pretty strong one. It'll take a bit for some more AAA stuff. Monkey Ball and Elebits look fun, but I don't think I could justify 50 bucks for each. 30 or 40, definitely, but not half a benjamin.
- bromanct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I never played Warioware before and the game if lots of fun. Zelda is great, and Wii sports is freaking awesome.
- ldkronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I highly recommend trying out Trauma Center. I just rented it for 3 days and it was great. I personally can't justify buying it for 50...for me it was more of a play though once game, and I accomplished that on a single rental.
However, if your the type that likes to replay levels and perfect them and try for the best score on the highest difficulty, I think think this game would have a LOT of staying power. Then there are also the insanely difficult bonus levels (I couldn't even come close to finishing the first one).
Overall, its a very good game, but it might be worth renting first. (if you try it, note this: you can use the minus button to skip through the annoying/lame story).
- naisho85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Perhaps its just were I live, but last week when best buy and circuit city got new shipments there was lines out front an hour before hand to get them. And not just a few college kids with nothing better to do, the line was about 30-40 people at each store. In fact the line was longer than the ps3 lines were at launch, and our best buy has a stack of 10 or so ps3s out front trying to get people to buy them. So 6 million seems like a realistic goal to sell by March to me.
- bigmark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I think what a lot people dont realize that the wii is the 2nd system for a lot of people. Mostly for 360 owners. Its the perfect compliment. At its price point its perfect and you get the best of both worlds. I know many including myself that have or are in the process of grabbing a wii and will be part of the wii60 group.
that said, nintendo did a great job, and accomplished to get the main stream family into gaming. well done big n, well done.- Broccoli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I agree, i own a wii and i am going to buy a 360.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree I own a PS3 and a Wii. The games that are going to suceed on the Wii are not the same type of games you can get on either PS3 or X360. The Wii is really great when friends come over and it's a blast. Wii Sports and Wario are really good group games. I play the PS3 more when I do solo gaming. Wii fans won't like this, but there are a lot of games a traditional controller is better suited for. When I'm doing serious gaming for myself I don't want to be waving my arms around or be forced to stand up. Sometimes it's nice to just want to sit on the couch with a normal controller. Hence my point it's a different style and market for Wii gamers than what the PS3 and X360 are aiming for.
- rcholbert, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3VGCharts is probably the worst place to go if you want an accurate estimate of what the console sales are. Their numbers are usually way off - they kind of factor in NPD data, but the rest of their stuff is from reading fanboy forums and such. I remember right after Christmas they had the US Wii sales number greatly exaggerated compare to proven NPD sales numbers and Nintendo statements. They also did the same with the PS3. I was also trolling... reading their forums and stumbled upon a comment by the admins where they basically said they take all the unofficial information they can get and then just guess at a number.
Not saying this newest number isn't right, but the site is far, far from official - and the admins have a noted Wii slant. - kjizzle, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2God who the ***** cares. This isn't news worthy - this is trivial *****.
- ThinkFr33ly, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2It's not quiet apples to apples. The wii costs between 20% and 40% less than the 360.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Quiet Apples versus loud Apples?
- razordancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is apples to apples. Systems sell games, which are what drive the real profits in this business. The fact that Nintendo is actually pulling a profit on each Wii is just icing on the cake for them...
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Just for the sake of interest, Sega sold about 4.5 million Dreamcasts n___n
- Slipknotic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That's a valid point that makes me, a Wii owner cringe.
- aapala, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Almost anyone who owned a DreamCast will tell you that it's their favorite console.
Hell, even a lot of people who never owned one will say that. - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12It's a good console but the controller is for the lose... it's like holding a dead seagull which eats lots of lithium batteries.
- All4not, on 10/12/2007, -1/+64.5 million in about 3 months like the Wii or over a few years? If it's over the span of the console, well the Wii will have a lot more than 4.5 million sold in just a few weeks.
- dralezero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Numbers Numbers Numbers
- tacklebox, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3The gamecube had a better game line up, IMO. I played my brother in law's and I wasnt impressed. Zelda was cool, but the graphics sucked and the controller while cool for bowling transfered like crap to red steel and zelda. Its definitely designed for someone like paris hilton to have the brain capacity to play, but no where near the next gen experience that the 360 offers for a seasoned gamer.
- yaosio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1For about a month after Microsoft said Gears of War had sold 2 million copies VGcharts had it at 1 million.
- NoThnMoreAB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I managed to get one at Walmart in 'the ghetto" this weekend. was one of 10 people there for a mind blowing stock level of 8 Wii's. After playing it for a few days my opinion is that it's a great console. My wife and I decided that we would try to play Wii sports every day and actually do the movements instead of flicking our wrists. my arm is tired. but it's amazingly fun. I rented Far Cry today, so we'll see how it goes when I get off work tonight.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Go, Nintendo, go!
I'm not one to cheer on corporate entities of any type, but given that I loathe both MS and Sony (one for its unethical business practices and the other for its abhorrently bad customer service--and I'll let you be the judge of which is which) I'd love to see Nintendo hand them their own asses. - thepolkapunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6And yet I still can't find one on the shelves... - jbelkin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Xbox 360's installed base is not at 8 million - they have definitely sold around 5 million - the rest are SHIPPED numbers. If you note the quarterly financial results that MS announced - they have backed away that the installed base will be 12 million by June 2007 but rather closer to 10 million - MS obviosuly stuffed the channels (as the phrase is know in retailing) because they wanted to look good for December and 2006 - trying to guess how many PS3's Sony could ship (they, of course, dismissed Nintendo as even competitive but once again, MS is clueless about consumers). You "stuff" the channel by offering free or better terms to retailers (order 100,000 and you can pay in 180 days or we'll give you another 5% credit for co-op advertising, etc ...) and now MS has numbers and realizes that XBox 360 is not selling as fast as they hoped. Antedotally, you can see - good luck finding a Wii, no trouble at all finding an Xbox 360 - this holiday, there were no stores I saw where the 360 was sold out - the problem is they pretty much squandered the year lead - and looking more and more like Dreamcast. Yea, the hardcore gamers were willing to buy in but once the other boys joined the game, they were third and by the end of 2007, MS will be third again.
Nintendo unlike MS (or Sony) makes a profit on each Wii and of course, since they own Zelda, Donkey Kong, Mario, etc ... every cartridge is an extra bit for themselves.
But as long as the shareholders don;'t mind MS spends $400 to sell something for $249, the Box will be around - at least until the new halo comes out but the console is now pretty much riding on halo - MS will need halo to sell 10 million and 5 milion new Xboxes ... could happen if Halo moves the bar but if not, MS is doomed to be third and about 6th if you could all the handheld systems.
The problem is MS is like an old general always fighting the last war - just look at their "6 steps" they announced they were using to conquering the VG marketplace - no where on the list does it say anything about BETTER GAMES - no, it's all old and tired like 'buy up exclusive game companies", blah blah ... the problem is none of them are Miyimoto or Sid Mier games - buying up an exclusive means nothing - anyone care when the new Tomb Raider is coming and if it's an exclusive?- aapala, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, MS backed off their 13-15 million installed user base and put it at 12 million by June 30. - scoinva, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1All XBOX 360 is missing a better Wii-Mote. Get-Her-Done MS.
- Partyworm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.gamergauge.net/report.php
These guys have the Wii numbers even higher.
In any case, i think it's a safe bet that the Wii has sold at least 4 million by now. I mean, if 3 million Wiis were confirmed sold by the end of 2006 (a period of 2 months), it's not a huge leap of faith to assume that it has sold an extra 1 million in 2007 (a period of 1 month). - jtavo100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wii Sports gets better and better as my friends and I get better and better. The game still hasn't peaked at all for us.
- Partyworm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed.
The game has a suprising amount of depth for people who are willing to learn all the intricacies of the controls. For example, top spin/back spin in tennis, and getting the ball to curl in bowling.
- Partyworm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed.
- crypulse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think they would have a hell lot more sales if they had more consoles being sold. I still can't get my damn hands on one.
- sscaff1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got my Wii on launch night but I camped out for 13 hours at Wal-Mart. My friend who's been wanting a Wii since release just got his on Sunday. He was 41 of 44 in line (thank god he got there early) at best buy. There has been no other console ever that has made you wait in line 2 months after release. The Wii sales are insane and it's ridiculous how people are still not admitting it.
- Blue_Eon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Phocion55 - If I could digg you up more than once, I would. I mean why is that people still want to bash Nintendo, especially when it comes to graphics?
Granted, I know most of the people on the internet never grew up with Nintendo and that their first console was probably a PS1, but good God. Lay off and just accept that Nintendo did something right with the Wii and the DS and that graphics DON'T matter.
For years, everyone hated on Nintendo for being "kiddy" and Sony was king. Let Nintendo have its day in the sun.- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Blue_Eon I have a Wii. Here is my opinion. I think people are disappointed in the graphics of Wii because as it stands right now Gamecube games have exhibited the same graphics quality. Resident Evil 4 was the best game graphically on Gamecube and beats hands down anything on Wii. Zelda Twilight princess was also a good looking game but it's identical on Gamecube too. To some extent graphics don't matter but this is a nextgen system and Nintendo said approximately twice the power of Gamecube. So even though I love the Wii, I'm not seeing twice the power. At more than twice the price the graphics are extremely disappointing.

Umm, because the graphics do suck and don't take advantage of HD TV sets? Because the selection of good games is rather meek, especially if you're not into the cutesy stuff?

I grew up with Nintendo, even though my first console was an Atari 2600. Still, graphics do matter to me or else I'd still be playing NES for 2D games and PS1 for 3D ones. By the way, it's not just about the graphics with the 360 and PS3. It's about the raw, multi-threaded processing power. It allows for more AI controlled characters on the screen, more realistic physics... destructible, more interactive environments, etc.
"For years, everyone hated on Nintendo for being "kiddy" and Sony was king. Let Nintendo have its day in the sun."
Go to the Wii section at any store and look at the Wii selection. At least 80% of the games still have cutesy, kiddy graphics. Then, look at the line-up of games for this year. Same story.

The same could be said for the ps3 and 360. Sony promised us this and that but failed horribly. Hell to even really tell a difference, you have to use an HDTV...which most people still do not have. This is the smallest increase of graphics from one generation to the next I have ever seen.
"Umm, because the graphics do suck and don't take advantage of HD TV sets? Because the selection of good games is rather meek, especially if you're not into the cutesy stuff?"
Again, the number of people who own HDTVs are still far outnumbered by the ones who don't. Also, what's wrong with cutesy games? IMO, these brightly colored games look better than the drab old awful looking texture maps I see on some games. And kiddy =/= cutesy. Not to mention that the DS and the Wii are constantly selling out everywhere, so I guess most other people don't care about "next gen" graphics and HD. They just want to have fun, something Nintendo does well. Next gen doesn't always mean better graphics.- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you can't see a difference that sounds like a personal problem. I'm not attacking you but that's the truth. To say there is no difference without a HDTV for X360 or PS3 is just insane.
To answer the second part of your post I am actually not so much into the true realism that a lot of games go for. I like to see more creative environments and graphics in games. I don't mind kiddy/cutesy, but then again I'm japanese :)

- FireJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't believe it, 4 million consoles and I'm still waiting for one. Thats ridiculous. I thought that after a couple of months I would be able to find one. Well, I guess another 4 million and maybe, just MAYBE I will find one while I'm doing my casual shopping at Target. Geez, I still can't believe that there are so many people out there that WANT one but can't FIND one. I think Wii will pass up xbox 360 by 2008.
