Wireless 360 Headset Defect Video
youtube.com — Here is a video showing the Xbox 360 Wireless headset Defect. PLEASE help spread the word. Original console owners should not have to pay the cost for repair!
- 1239 diggs
- digg it
- paulringo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Great video. Thanks I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out!!!
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+71I'm impressed with this guys speaking skills, he made a good video displaying his problem without looking foolish about it at all. Real cool. Microsoft should fix the problem.
I haven't bought a 360 yet, but I plan to. Will I have this problem with the newer stock controller, or are they just the launch controllers? - OpCzar, on 10/12/2007, -24/+12Practice makes perfect. His first attempt:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rghGxV1YnKw - kilmer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@Klisk
I bought a system recently and the controller it came with had the sticker on the back of it so according to the video you should not. - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13@kilmer
Okay, cool. Thanks. This is the type of stuff I like to actually see on digg. - mrwiggl3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I also get the loud hi-pitch hum with the wireless
It also happens on a wired controller (wired or wireless mic) - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8how early are we talking? I got my 360 in May. Is this a launch console issue?
btw, good video. He presented himself very well and didn't go into the internet style fanboy rant we've all come to know. ZOMG!111 - slsanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@ OpCzar
He made two videos because some people were saying he was switching controllers, headsets, ect. The second video allows you to see everything as it happens. - Yarnage, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@kilmer
All XBox 360 Controllers should have the sticker on the back. He only showed the sticker to illustrate that he was using two different controllers and nothing more. - brasilcaps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I never tried his method before (nor do I know if I have the original one or not) but what I usually do is turn on the CONTROLLER FIRST then the HEADSET. It seems to work fine for me.
- jayman16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also turn on my controller first, then the headset. Always works fine for me...But It does lose sync sometimes and ppl complain of feedback from my mic.
- kilmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Yarnage
I did not buy a launch console, but according to the video the controllers that came with the launch consoles did not have a sticker on the back of the controller. I am going to take the word of the person who made the video on this one.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+71I'm impressed with this guys speaking skills, he made a good video displaying his problem without looking foolish about it at all. Real cool. Microsoft should fix the problem.
- davymac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Word.. get this to front page.. I ended up buying a new controller
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I dugg this even though I'm not having any problems, as my 360 is only a couple of months old and most likely has the new controller.
- velvet396, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23definitely a problem to fix, early adopters shouldn't get screwed and often do.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Ideally, you're right, but you also see the irony in your statement, I'm sure. If early adopters are often screwed, why do they keep coming back and adopting early. If they don't learn, then I'd say they probably do deserve it.
Tech is unpredictable folks. It doesn't hurt to wait and see. - popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Wait and see? Microsoft shouldn't deny or punish people that spent $60 on a peripheral because the old controllers conflict.
Do the right thing MS, replace controllers. The bad media spin will hurt you more than replacing a few controllers. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@dclowd9901:
I just don't get the "I'm waiting until the bugs are out" crowd. Just how long is that? When do you know all the bugs are out, or even if there are bugs to begin with?
My response to people like that is normally, you wait... I'm going to grab me a handful of new tech goodness. - mcottier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My 360 actually made my rented movies restart the license after every time I watch it. I rented it and basically own it now since the license keeps renewing automatically. Pretty good glitch :)
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Ideally, you're right, but you also see the irony in your statement, I'm sure. If early adopters are often screwed, why do they keep coming back and adopting early. If they don't learn, then I'd say they probably do deserve it.
- Civil44, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20dont even own a 360 but nice video illustrates the point and you know your ***** ;p
- toomanymartyrs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Thanks! I borrowed a new controller from a buddy and it solved my issues! GREAT DIGG!
- alpha-male, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I was so glad Circuit City let me return mine. I destroyed the package opening it and threw it away so I thought they'd force a store credit on me. I dug through forms for two weeks trying to get that thing to work. Completely frustrating. For $60 bucks the thing needs to work correctly right out the box every time.
- lenny4422, on 10/12/2007, -57/+11Since you posted a negative experience with a Microsoft product I need to cast a spell to defend you from such posts as:
1. Why are you complaining about $60, you bought a $400 console, $60 should be nothing. Go get off the couch and get a job you lazy @##*(.
2. Mine works perfectly, maybe you are not giving it enough ventilation. Learn how to treat your electronics better, or RTFM.
3. Some electronics are faulty, about 3%. Are you too stupid to get the store warranty?
4. Why don't you get a Wii or PS3 instead?
5. Don't you know that the early versions of products have problems. Look at OSX, it was very buggy during the initial release. You should wait until they work the kinks out before you buy.
Note: this is a joke. - popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@lenny:
LOL the dumbass kids here modded you to oblivion before they got to the line about it being a joke. I sympathize with you. - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What you need to do, Lenny, is look to Mark Twain for satirical pointers. You could rewrite that so it would obviously be a joke, and you'd be dugg up right now.

- micro23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Just for the record I LOVE MY 360 and I love my Headset. I just want them to fix our problem especially since it seems to only affect LAUNCH owners like myself. This is more of a public service announcement to help the people who are having problems. I am glad it's working! Goodluck everyone.
- Anotious, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Guys, all you have to do is call Microsoft and tell them your controller isn't working and they will replace it...
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have the same issue and I bought my 360 in July.
- chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm more interested in what the 'first video' did that made him create a 2nd video.
Weirdos clamming shenanigans? Seemed pretty clear cut defective to me.- calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think people were claiming that he switched out his controller when it went off camera.
- TheBEAST205, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Good, informative video, I wish there were more people like this on the Internet....
I'm guessing MS has some plan to patch/recall the wireless head sets or controllers, they have been doing very good about fixing problems lately. - GeneralFailure0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone happen to know how widespread these problems are? My XBox and two controllers are both about a year old, and I'm planning on getting a wireless headset to replace my crappy wired one. Hopefully I won't see problems like this...
- dotorg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I'm not sure they really have the cause of whatever that problem is figured out. I have a near-launch 360 (the XBox is from March 2006, the controllers from my original 360 which was shipped to me in December). No "stickers" on them. (Are they really stickers, or something printed? The video was too blurry.
In either case, neither headset ever has any syncing problems, they've worked completely flawlessly.
I'm not saying its not a problem, but "sticker" or "label" vs no sticker or label is not it.- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The point of the sticker vs no-sticker is just a way to narrow down which hardware is having the issues. This is akin to the old days of quickly determining which version of the Sega Genesis you owned based on which game was packaged with it without having to memorize the different model numbers at the time (For instance, Altered Beast consoles lacked region lockout chips, hence they were often desirable for those wanting to use the Mega CD).
I can't say with any certainty about how the controller/headphones/360 all communicate. But it looks to me like this is just an issue of a poorly designed or poorly configured controller. The headset is likely designed to specifically avoid channels that it perceives as already "taken" or when there's too much interference. The older controller probably broadcasts a signal the headset simply doesn't like or the signal is probably too strong or even so "noisy" that the headset just doesn't like it. Newer controllers have obviously gone through at least one revision, if not several, so they don't interfere with the headset.
Anybody worth their salt usually don't depend on model numbers, stickers, or whatever for minor things (like controllers). It's not uncommon for manufactures to make minor internal revisions due to component availability, cost improvement, or some other reason without actually changing the external model number. A dozen controllers might have two or three A/B/C board revisions amongst them but no changes to the actual model number. Why they do that? I'm not 100% sure. I know some manufacturers won't change the model number to avoid new SKUs at the retail level. Or maybe it's to save money in retooling new molds for the shell if the model number is molded on. Whatever, it happens and it's not usually a huge problem unless something like this crops up.
If it hasn't happened by now, I would imagine someone should be disassembling the controllers to look at the actual boards and components inside. - LuCiFer6, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1So when you bought your 360, you didn't have the sticker on the controller? Because when I bought my 360 I did have one on my controller.
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The point of the sticker vs no-sticker is just a way to narrow down which hardware is having the issues. - finn, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6why in the heck does anyone need a wireless headset for the 360, i mean come on, how far is your head going to be away from your hands (that is, the controller is what the normal wired headset plugs into), not to mention more batteries; completely silly idea IMHO.
- GeneralFailure0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13It's just inconvenient having the wire running up to your face like that, and the headset itself isn't very comfortable. Plus the XBox Wired Headset broke on me from normal use because it's a cheap piece of crap, apparently.
- patm1987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9to name three reasons you need a wireless headset (or to let someone else name three reasons)
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/11/03 - dan4prez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7My friend's cat has eaten through three of his wired headset cords. Right there is a perfect example of why you would want a wireless headset.
- Haon, on 10/27/2007, -0/+4Hmm...I think heard Gang Starr playing in the background for a sec there...
- EscapeArt1st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was happening with my Original 'first production run' (05) 360 / controller and headset...
Good news though (well kind of)... MS last update on the 30th November bricked that console (also reported on Digg), so I got a new console from the retailer that sold me the first one, and the new (06) console is OK.
The only other way around this problem was to turn on the headset and controller before the 360 booted and kind of hope they both went onto 1. - fershizzle, on 10/12/2007, -24/+1digging your own video....pathetic
- Nadcock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Its a good thing your not a politician. Voting for your self... how pathetic!
- Philoushka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this idiot obviously has never submitted a story to digg... otherwise he'd have known that you don't digg the story, the system diggs it for you! (no soviet russia jokes, please! :)
- DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1I stopped listening when I heard: "We'll start by turning on the XBox."
No *****. - Boyblundr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Even though I don't like the Xbox, I have to agree with this. Microsoft, being the "wonderful console creator" they are, should be replacing controllers for free.
On another note, I love the way this guy put the video together. No transitions, no leaving the camera, good speaking skills. Nice job.- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who said they wouldn't replace them?
- BillDoE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Um, the sticker is on the battery pack. The rechargeable pack has none. I have no problems with Sync that I have noticed, but often get lots of unwanted noise. Sounds great when it works. People yell at me when it doesn't. However I do look at the sync lights and have never seen it change channels.
- BoDKirok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had the exact same issue and the only way I got around it was to use a second controller - the messed up thing is the second controller that I use with the wireless headset was part of my launch day package. That's right, when I bought the system at launch the package came with two controllers - one does not work with the wireless headset while the other does!
Go figure. Anyways, does this mean my other controller is useless if I want to use it with the wireless headset? If so I might just take it apart for fun. - uacheesehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My headset desyncs but then comes back within a few seconds.. constantly! And it is from an original launch controller. I've been thinking of getting another wireless controller, anyway - hopefully that fixes my problem too!
- sprocketjockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The stickers don't indicate anything; it was just to show you the controller was brand new. They are just the battery logo's, indicating you need to use them
- Spooky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Hell, I can't even get my headset to sync up at all. It just keeps searching for a channel and then all the lights blink. Any ideas? I have tried it with controllers on and off.
- bw007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've got a console that was built on December 26th (they were released December 2nd in the UK), so am I going to experience this problem? (I've heard people say it only effects launch consoles, but mine is damn close). I've ordered one of these from gameplay.co.uk and it's already been dispatched, so no opportunity to cancel it, but it's meant to be a christmas present for me so I won't be able to return it either by the time I've tested it :/
- Cardcaddy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Its called turn you controller on first then your wireless headset.
- yellowmello, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yes what he said.
- CardinalFang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Tech Support: "It's not a defect, it's a feature."
- glitch13, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3So wait, a device doesn't work correctly with a peripheral that was created after the device was already on the shelves?
Guess I should get my money back for my motherboard, I don't have one of these new fangled PCI-X ports that this video card I just bough requires!
Bleh, just turn your controller on first and be thankful it works at all and you didn't need to buy new controllers.- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I nominate you for Douchebag of the Year.
Your comparison sucks so bad, it might as well be latched onto your bitch *****.
Nobody expects a PCI-X card to work in a motherboard that doesn't support it because the motherboard was never designed with it in mind. People do expect a wireless controller and wireless headset to work together because that's what Microsoft specifically made it for. Next time you come up with a piss poor example, make sure you aim for the ***** toilet so we don't have to step over it.
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I nominate you for Douchebag of the Year.
- paulringo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Turning on the controller first does nothing glitch. You don't happen to work for Microsoft tech support do you? cause you have the same crappy attitude towards the issue as them.
Also your analogy was horrible. this is a static system, not a computer that can have a million different configurations, and peripherals. So compatibility and interference should not be an issue with components that came in the box with the system, or were certified by Microsoft. - McTim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What a polite guy, thanking youtube for hosting and everything.
- rootme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Great digg chick!
-Shork - rip2roar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You dont have to pay to repair...Delivery is free too....Is this only in Europe?
- PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Replace his dam controller MS!
- google_bot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sorry, i dont own a 360 why can't you just change the channel on the receiving end? since you have 4 channels,.
- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Channel selection is automatic.
- got-haggis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i have a 360 that i got at launch with the original controller
i also have the wireless headset
i've had 0 issues, this does not happen to me. - sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2youtube says that it only has like 400 somethin views, but it has over 700 diggs. How is that possible?
- Kinsbane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5People Digg stories just for the sake of clicking the digg button. It's quite the phenomena.
- nattybohman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some people digg the article because they want to remember to watch the video later. Youtube is blocked at many workplaces.
- Varrook, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3A de-synched headset is certainly a problem, but I don't think that it warrants a replacement of controllers. I would think that 99% of 360 users buy another wireless controller for their house. Assuming that this video shows a reliable fix to the problem, it would appear that the issue is relatively moot. Just give the original controller to player 2 and use your newer one. Unless you're stubborn and you have your 'favorite' controller.
And if it's sound issues that you're worried about, stick with the tried-and-true wired headset.- shickey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ok, but what if I already have 2 controllers and don't want to buy another. Also, what if I bought both at launch....
In your scenario, you're still making me spring for another controller. I already have enough controllers...
- shickey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ok, but what if I already have 2 controllers and don't want to buy another. Also, what if I bought both at launch....
- Kinsbane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have a launch console from the Zero Hour event, along with the wireless controller that came with it and an extra one I bought. I have had no issues, nor heard of any issues or problems from other XBL'ers, regarding my wireless headset... about the only two things wrong with my controllers is one of em likes transmit moving left on the left thumbstick without doing anything (stick calibration), and the other has the nubs wearing off, along with a bit of squeak.
Hope you guys with issues get em all sorted out so you can use what you want. - spoonard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wow...Microsoft was really on a roll there...
- william, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Before Wireless 360 headset was out in stores, I called Microsoft and told them that my 360 controller was not connecting right to my 360, with out questions they sent one. A day later after the call the old controller stared working again. I sent back the old controller, when the new controller arrived. That was about 1 month before the wireless 360 headset was out in stores. Then when the wireless 360 headset came out, I bought it. Everything worked great! Maybe people with the Wireless 360 headset problems should call 1800 4 my Xbox and just tell them that your 360 controller is not connecting right. Do not mention anything about the wireless 360 headset. Hopefully, you’re 360 is still in warranty, If so they should replace the old 360 controller.
- PCBuckman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Why is this even a problem. Ok yes it doesn't sync with the original controller. Whoopty do. Use another controller or use one of the other 3 channels. This should not be a problem unless you had 4 headsets that you were trying to sync.
- Face3000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Thats what i was thinking 100% behind you on that one :)
- seansshack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Interesting.
- Face3000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Sound to me like an Issue with First version 360 wirelss controllers. Maybe a different chip set in the controller than the newer one that prevents it form syncing to the Wireless Ear piece?
SO the title defect with the ear piece is incorrect it's obivious the controller? And just out of curiosity can't you change channels on the wireless controoler ot match the Ear piece ? Channel 2 , Channel 2 so on and so fourth ? - dethsesh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The easy solution is to just go to walmart and pick up an xbox 360 wireless controller repair kit.
- Afrozeke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was on the phone last night helping a friend who was having the exact same problem. The older controller would not work with the wireless headset. Fortunately he did have a newer controller lying around. Microsoft needs to fix this.
- MattBrett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm surprised to see that only one person (that I noticed) mentioned that he connects the controller and headset in the wrong order. The instructions that come with the headset clearly state that you must connect the controller, then the headset. And if you have more than one person on the console and each person is using a wireless controller and headset, you have to go around and have each connect their controller and headset in sequence.
I can't say I'm surprised that it doesn't work properly when it's not used properly. Or perhaps the de-syncing issue happens regardless of how you connect them?
In any case, I'd say this video is bogus simply on the grounds that the headset isn't connected properly to begin with. - micro23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For anyone who says I should do it controller first you didnt listen to the video. This is to show what happens when it resyncs. Also this is a moot point because if nothing is wrong then why does the new controller work perfect. The video shows the clear defect for anyone who is actually watching. It's ok im sure Microsoft has see it and hopefully they are working on a resolution.
- MattBrett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I see what you're trying to get across, I just don't think this is the best way to illustrate it. Starting off on the wrong foot is hardly a way to demonstrate problems that occur while you're using the headset. But it seems like you've convinced a lot of people regardless, so well done in that regard.
But I'm still unclear on exactly what is happening here. Is the root of this the fact that the headset goes out of sync while using the older controllers - even if they're setup properly? Or does this only happen when you connect the headset first, then (older) controller?
I'm trying to win a couple battles with MS myself and feel your pain. Hopefully a resolution comes to light sooner than later.
- MattBrett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I see what you're trying to get across, I just don't think this is the best way to illustrate it. - micro23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just recived a call from Microsoft. They called my cellphone somehow.... EERIE but i like it :) The want my controller and they want to replace it. Lets see what they say about the extra controller I bought with my xbox that is also having the same issues. I will let you know. Thanks for all the support.
- callmeebryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, i just purchased the headset for my brother today for Christmas. When i came home we tried to connect it and were having the same problems as explained in this video.
However, we figured out a way around it. It works great now, and we have no desync problems or anything like that.
All that has to be done is WIRE the wireless controller to the console like you are charging it. Then connect the wireless headset to the console. After it connects, both the controller and the headset will be locked into quadrant 1. Next, unplug the cord FROM THE CONTROLLER, NOT THE CONSOLE. Make sure you leave the charge cord plugged in to the console. Your wireless headset and controller will now work together perfectly.
While i do agree that this is a huge annoyance to have to go through this procedure every time, It is not that bad. Hope is not lost for the 1st gen guys like myself and my brother and alot of you. I do agree though that Microsoft should replace the controllers free of charge.
Hope i helped you guys out. Happy gaming!!!!
