World of Warcraft down all day, Blizzard has no ETA

worldofwarcraft.com — WOW usually goes down on Tuesdays from 3am PST to 11am PST. Its 3:30 pm PST and everything is still down. Blizzard has posted an in game notice that says they "have no ETA" when it will be back up. 6 million nerds are suffering with drawl right now!

      I'm not saying games are bad, I love games as much as the next person. But MMOs cause you to play more and get you addicted when something like halo or half life can give you all the entertainment you need and isn't as addictive. Games that don't end when you turn off the computer = bad.

My cycle would be find a new MMO, play it, love it, tell everyone how great it was, have something happen to me ingame that royally messed me up, begin to hate it, totally hate it, drop it, complaing to anyone I know of how much it sucked, repeat. It might have been a pitiful cycle, but it certainly was a vicious cycle.

      I ended up deciding I have too much of an addictive personality to play MMOs. They may be great in moderation and for people who can control themselves, but I just don't (notice I didn't say "can't") do that.

      its called ENTERTAINMENT. youre paying to be entertained. what someone spends for a potential MONTHS worth of entertainment some people spend for 3 drinks at a bar. i say thats a FANTASTIC investment. yeah you buy it for 50 upfront, but theres upkeep of the servers. in return you also get added material usually pretty regularly.

Sure, mmo's can be addicting, but so can fps? I know people who play Call of Duty in a clan- they play more then my friends who play mmo's. You can certainly say gaming in general is addicting, but you can't just associate it with mmo's. Oh, and maybe you thought it was a waste of time- but do the thinking for yourself- you might offend someone. (not offending me, what offends me is when someone makes a definitive statement like that when its your opinion.)

      Exactly! I always shake my head when I hear people talking about MMOs being a waste of time, knowing full well that almost all of them still watch TV, watch movies, play offline games, etc., most of which envolve zero contact with other people and thought of your own.

    • Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10while i'm not sure blizzards situation, but where i work, i put in a 8am-5pm shift. and the last server update we did happened late at night(10pm, which is when our sales already start to decline for the night) anyway, we ended up having a server error, which didnt appear until two hours later, causing all the high end morning traffic from the east coast to be completely lost. the fix took only 20 minutes. however if we had done this during the middle of the day, we could have been down for about 30 minutes as planned, and any problems encountered could have been fixed on the spot, eliminating the large amount of money lost.

      i'm sure blizzard has a team of round-the-clock technitians, but most likely their programmers work regular hours, and need to be available incase something goes wrong during an update such as this.

I don't think starting at midnight would have made a difference. Unexpected things can happen while doing server upgrades and software patches, believe me, I know. I don't run server size anywhere near Blizzards, but I know what can go wrong. Lighten up, they hundreds of techs and programmers on it, I'm sure...

    But yes wow has been borked all day :/ . It was up for about 30 mins then all the servers got shutdown. Not sure of the reason. Maybe they forgot the weather effects :D

(knocks at) opens and on the Indianapolis Star headline Bryce Jones was shot 36 times last night by 7,000,000 WoW players he died instantly

      You could have 25, or 25,000 engineers working the problem, it probably won't make a huge difference.

      I've played my share of MMORPGs and WOW is the most robust system I've ever seen considering how many people are on their servers and how massive and complex the game system is. I've seen games that lag painfully under 5,000 users.

Lately I've been thinking about playing some more, but reading uber-dork comments like "I've been trying to login for 6 hours waaahhh" really make me pause... my time would be better spent changing my oil or caulking the tub and would be infinitely more meaningful.

But, since I know nothing about the technology behind these massive servers they must be using I can't be the best judge. I really don't care about not being able to play WoW for 1 day. I will be seeing V......all the while thinking about an MC run I could be doing with my re-spec.ed holy priest....and shaking from the "drawl".

    Point 1 - The Nerd Accusation - Apparently because we play an MMO, it means we do not go outside. Ironic that you are posting that on the internet. Also its 10:00pm at night here. I don't have anywhere to go. Do you?

    Point 2 - Money Doesn't Mean Knowledge - Blizzard could have infinite resources financially, but humans still have to find the flaw in the code. More money doesn't change how fast humans will find the problem.

    • travhimself, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Not to mention that WoW is an enormous operation. They've got a lot on their plates; give them a break. If the servers are down beyond the expected time, they usually make it up to their users by extending subscriptions for the length of the downtime.

Waiting...getting disappointed... it brings ya back to the Beta days. So in turn i suppose it's like Playing WoW is like Playing a "GOOD" MMORPG that never makes it past Beta. I just wish that Blizzard with all their money and other servers would test out patches before spamming the live servers with bugged code. I assume Blizzard must have a high turn over rate since they are always seeming to hire on their main site and get lots of new people and it never seems to get any better.

  • Bonobo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4ive been trying to log in all day....first the weather stuff doesnt work...then the server crashes...then they realize the mail system is glitched and the tailoring prfession doesnt work...i also noticed all of my character spells were GONE!

    it was up for about 5 min and them when blizzard announced they were shutting down the server in 3 minutes, then everyone went CRAZY in the game....constant casting....mobs....chat spamming....crazy lagging...and best of all the mobs of horde and the alliance destroying eachother in the alliance caiptal city as quickly as they could!

  • flagrant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I got on at around 5pm pst. The server shutdown a little while after that though. I got to travel around a little and check out some of the new stuff... It's kinda sad when a game has you so hooked you spend half and hour looking for the new "weather".

    Looks like some of the servers are up now... but the auth server is taking a beating.
