World of Warcraft down all day, Blizzard has no ETA
worldofwarcraft.com — WOW usually goes down on Tuesdays from 3am PST to 11am PST. Its 3:30 pm PST and everything is still down. Blizzard has posted an in game notice that says they "have no ETA" when it will be back up. 6 million nerds are suffering with drawl right now!

/with drawl - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -22/+45I refuse to play MMOs... all that happens is you end up playing for months and you look back on it and say "what a waste of time".
I'm not saying games are bad, I love games as much as the next person. But MMOs cause you to play more and get you addicted when something like halo or half life can give you all the entertainment you need and isn't as addictive. Games that don't end when you turn off the computer = bad. - mofomojo, on 10/12/2007, -41/+35Agreed;
MMOs = waste of time.
You'll eventually quit and have lost several months you'll never get back. - phoggey, on 10/12/2007, -17/+35Thank you for telling us the value of our time.
- Hyperion, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18@phpirate: I used to play MMOs, but what you said would always be the thing that happened to me. My cycle would be find a new MMO, play it, love it, tell everyone how great it was, have something happen to me ingame that royally messed me up, begin to hate it, totally hate it, drop it, complaing to anyone I know of how much it sucked, repeat. It might have been a pitiful cycle, but it certainly was a vicious cycle.
I ended up deciding I have too much of an addictive personality to play MMOs. They may be great in moderation and for people who can control themselves, but I just don't (notice I didn't say "can't") do that. - timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -37/+10you stupid spastic, you're too retarded to know when to stop and you're blaming the GAME?
- pavelich, on 10/12/2007, -30/+5@ ,,|,_
i bet there are a lot of WOW users having /with drawl right now. (get it! get it!) - ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -27/+2pavelich - thanks Captain Obvious.
- goat4, on 10/12/2007, -8/+38i find it ***** retarded for people to say paying for mmo's is stupid, or theyre a "waste of time"
its called ENTERTAINMENT. youre paying to be entertained. what someone spends for a potential MONTHS worth of entertainment some people spend for 3 drinks at a bar. i say thats a FANTASTIC investment. yeah you buy it for 50 upfront, but theres upkeep of the servers. in return you also get added material usually pretty regularly. - thenorwegian, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Yeeeah...first off its a stereotype to say people who play mmo's are nerds. I play, and I certainly dont think I'm a nerd. Sure, mmo's can be addicting, but so can fps? I know people who play Call of Duty in a clan- they play more then my friends who play mmo's. You can certainly say gaming in general is addicting, but you can't just associate it with mmo's. Oh, and maybe you thought it was a waste of time- but do the thinking for yourself- you might offend someone. (not offending me, what offends me is when someone makes a definitive statement like that when its your opinion.)
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@goat4: "i find it ***** retarded for people to say paying for mmo's is stupid, or theyre a 'waste of time'
its called ENTERTAINMENT"
Exactly! I always shake my head when I hear people talking about MMOs being a waste of time, knowing full well that almost all of them still watch TV, watch movies, play offline games, etc., most of which envolve zero contact with other people and thought of your own. - Monoboy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@mofomojo
Would that time really be spent better? If I wasn't playing WoW, I'd definitely be down at the homeless shelter dishing out soup. - mrwags3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I wonder how many people are glued to their WoW Server Widgets in anticipation of their server coming online!!!!
/haha - Taedirk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@phpirate - "I refuse to play MMOs... all that happens is you end up playing for months and you look back on it and say "what a waste of time"."
The same could be said for every single game invented. What'd you do that was productive when playing chess? Anything moreso when playing Pong? How about feeding quarters into a Street Fighter II machine? Beating Final Fantasy IV? VII? Or posting on digg...
Dear Kettle,
I don't know how to tell you this, but there's something that's been concerning me about your current hue... - definiteform, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2phpirate: CS isn't addictive you say. Tell the millions that.
- Dynazhen, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0@Hyperion
Omg it's the same with me! I am trying to stay away from another MMO >.<
WoW was my last... - Drood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Mofomojo and Phpirate: How the hell is that any different from ANY other game? Why single out MMO's?
- irate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4goat4 seems to be suffering "with drawl"...
- TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those questioning about whether they are nerds for playing MMOs... contrary to how popular digg may seem, if you're posting on this site, you're probably a nerd. Add to that playing MMOs, and you are officially a nerd.
...and I say this, after posting this message to digg myself. ;-) - dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm a geek, not a nerd. Nerds are good at math, and I suck at math... and thats why Geeks use computers.
- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -9/+58Yee Haw!!!
- MikeMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6Right now if you open up World of Warcraft you get a message saying:
"We've run into some issues with bringing up the realms. We hope to have them live as soon as possible, but we don't have a current ETA to provide at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we'll provide an update as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience in this matter."- grantj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+49Looks something like this:

- digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8Why does this happen every damn patch? I mean come on, why don't they start at midnight?
- Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10while i'm not sure blizzards situation, but where i work, i put in a 8am-5pm shift. and the last server update we did happened late at night(10pm, which is when our sales already start to decline for the night) anyway, we ended up having a server error, which didnt appear until two hours later, causing all the high end morning traffic from the east coast to be completely lost. the fix took only 20 minutes. however if we had done this during the middle of the day, we could have been down for about 30 minutes as planned, and any problems encountered could have been fixed on the spot, eliminating the large amount of money lost.
i'm sure blizzard has a team of round-the-clock technitians, but most likely their programmers work regular hours, and need to be available incase something goes wrong during an update such as this. - Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Can't... Midnight is still prime hours.
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4errr midnight in which timezone around the world?
- mrwags3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm not sure about everyone else, but I have never had any problems after a patch with login, until now. I don't think starting at midnight would have made a difference. Unexpected things can happen while doing server upgrades and software patches, believe me, I know. I don't run server size anywhere near Blizzards, but I know what can go wrong. Lighten up, they hundreds of techs and programmers on it, I'm sure...
- ArmandoM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Saggygrandma:
for the timezone that the particular server you play on is located.
not that midnight would be a good time at all. - ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You people think this was bad? During the opening for AQ, my server had to reset a few times before it stopped bugging out. I couldn't even go onto Kalimdor because of the gates opening and all the people over there.
- genduke, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6because everything is patched on top of the patch and the whole system is like a house of cards
- dgritsko, on 10/12/2007, -8/+45"6 million nerds are suffering with drawl right now"
yeah i cant even imagine how tough all that drawl's gotta be. it sucks.- pavelich, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2damn it not cool, i am sorry i posted my comment as i was scrolling down and then saw yours and by then it was too late. well at least we were both thinking of the same lame ass joke.
- JasonHilton, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Looks like the Realms came online at 8:00 PM EST. Now the login server is overloaded...
- MikeMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2yea... I can't authenticate now
- plarf, on 10/12/2007, -13/+10Oh God! the world is ending......hey i always wanted to know what the real sky looked like.
- sjalt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9it was great... especially with rain coming out of it!
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Yep, patch 1.10 has snow and rain! and storms and desert sandstorm and MORE
- tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -28/+7I think you mean withdrawal.
Spell Check- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18I think you're right but spell check wouldn't help, "with" and "drawl" are spelled correctly... We need a Stupid Check button too I guess.
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Actually it works, probably wouldn't work if you he wasn't saying Yee' Haw!!!
But "with drawl" works. Think southern drawl.
- SomeGuy347, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18this sucks.. i've been trying to get on wow for 6 hours...
i have no life.. :(- Scottyx38, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I P W N E D I
- SomeGuy347, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well.. i've been doing other stuff too... just checking if wow works every half hour or so
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Oh My God!!! They may have to face Real Life. That could be threatening to their fragile minds.
- ajforgue, on 10/12/2007, -31/+2http://www.eve-online.com
- pfunked, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The build version says March 22, so this build has been on the test servers a few days. Curious to know what went wrong when they moved to production.
- evlcookie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1hehe eve-online .. from what i was told they suffered the same problem when patches came out ;)
But yes wow has been borked all day :/ . It was up for about 30 mins then all the servers got shutdown. Not sure of the reason. Maybe they forgot the weather effects :D- krum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But... the lag is caused by their ISP's network, or was it hackers DDoSing them, or both?? I don't remember all the excuses. How could a hardware upgrade possibly fix *that*?
- krum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But... the lag is caused by their ISP's network, or was it hackers DDoSing them, or both?? I don't remember all the excuses. How could a hardware upgrade possibly fix *that*?
- happyoterson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3patch day...its nothing new. they were supposed to be moving to new hardware this patch to help with some of the lag and general unstability lately. its not surprising that this may take longer. take a deep breath. turn off the monitor. go read a book.
- mrwags3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I agree about the book, but I've never had any problems on patch day, until now. They're working on it.
- gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4poor bastards.
- blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -24/+14Who cares? God forbid you have to go "out" and do something else - its a frigen game, get over it.
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6I gave up. It's almost 10pm EDT now and I still can't get to my server. Oblivion time!
- airhead75, on 10/12/2007, -17/+8Um, you could just go outside for a little while - it might be nice where you are.
- bruggerA, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6Im a huge WoW fan.I had the whole day free and i can't play.someone up in heaven doesn't like me agian.
/cry- phoenix11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2True WoW fans never plan their free days for Tuesday. =D
They know that it is server maintenence day and that the servers will be borked for 3-12 hours.
- phoenix11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2True WoW fans never plan their free days for Tuesday. =D
- HakBot, on 10/12/2007, -38/+6ha ha you *****!
- bryce302, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11It is amazing how much money they get and still have problem like this I figured it out a couple weeks back and they are getting close to 90,000,000 a month from all the people that pay to get ripped off. (knocks at) opens and on the Indianapolis Star headline Bryce Jones was shot 36 times last night by 7,000,000 WoW players he died instantly
- Brian48216, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Infrastructures like WOW aren't things where if you just throw enough money at it, it'll get fixed faster.
You could have 25, or 25,000 engineers working the problem, it probably won't make a huge difference.
I've played my share of MMORPGs and WOW is the most robust system I've ever seen considering how many people are on their servers and how massive and complex the game system is. I've seen games that lag painfully under 5,000 users. - timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3agreed, the system running wow will definately be one of the beefest on the planet, and i wouldn't even want to consider their internet bill for renting all those fat pipes. further more can you imagine the massive data they would have to deal with. my guess is some kind of data corruption or error which they need to fix on each realm
- Brian48216, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Infrastructures like WOW aren't things where if you just throw enough money at it, it'll get fixed faster.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6oh snap, I hope they recover from the drawl illness..

Zero effect.- Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Your comment proves otherwise. You took time out of your day to type a response. It had an effect. You are reading this response to your post. Another effect. You will now stew for a moment trying to come up with some pithy retort. More effect. You will fail to do so and feel bad. So much effect.

- wyld, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2mmmmmmm Oblivion FTW
- jcook793, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7I played WoW for a few months last year. Got tired of it and closed my account. Lately I've been thinking about playing some more, but reading uber-dork comments like "I've been trying to login for 6 hours waaahhh" really make me pause... my time would be better spent changing my oil or caulking the tub and would be infinitely more meaningful.
- MrC539, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, I played for a few months last year but it's too time consuming. Every once and a while I consider playing again, but there's just too much time involved.
- CaptainMal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So... you'd rather play with your caulk than play video games?
I think you might be better off with the games. They probably have more substance. Ahem.
BADUMPUMP!!

- Scopitone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Chill! We're trying and want to play the game just as badly as you do!
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8oh no! now all those wow geeks will have to suffer the threats of the real world... like... the outside....
- pfunked, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Aren't there bears "outside"?
- tanxadillo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3A swear to you, good sir. The sun has been trying to kill me since I was four. I have yet to gain the upper hand yet, but I must plan my tactics _inside_.
Leaving my room would be suicide. _Suicide_.
- Sibertank, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I just want to make my UI!!! I just get the game and its like... PATCH... Oh.. looks like our servers are down.....
- ryanwarren, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Even though I am paying over $15.00 a month for WoW, I still believe that Blizzard is doing the best they can do. But, since I know nothing about the technology behind these massive servers they must be using I can't be the best judge. I really don't care about not being able to play WoW for 1 day. I will be seeing V......all the while thinking about an MC run I could be doing with my re-spec.ed holy priest....and shaking from the "drawl".
- oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How do you pay more than $15 a month? Isn't that the most expensive plan - $15/month?
- saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He must spend money on gold.
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I pay over fifteen cause of the change US to Canadian dollars... Heh.
- pnmerk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5would be nice if it never comes back then i would see my friends
- gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Wow, millions step out into the big room for the first time in ages... the light, it burns.
- futoshi, on 10/12/2007, -16/+40wned!
- captn_insano, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18Its like 6 million nerds all just lost their best friend. Sure I know some of you aren't nerds-- their are some geeks in there too. Lets not forget the gold farmers, and creepy old guys looking to pick-up young guys who play girl characters.
This is probably going to get flamed but Its funny and had to be said. Hey I'm a gamer too and Its all in good fun. - kall, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2What would you expect? It's patch day.
- Anticitizen1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"6 million nerds are suffering with drawl right now!"
and 1 me is suffering from spelling mis takes right now! - FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7Why is it every time there is a post about WOW, people have to say how they tried it, got bored and think it sucks. Like anyone really gives a damn.
- diafel, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5Like anyone gives a damn when you can't play your precious game for a few hours
- tommythetomcat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13This would explain why the internet is so laggy tonight :)
- b-rent, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4^^ ROFL I spit when I read that! Good times!
- adamcurtis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5And this is news why? Granted I play the game and I'm actually on this because the servers are down, but all they're doing is fixing the new patch they just put out. It happens, not news.
- muffins, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Here it all is. Simple and laid out.
Point 1 - The Nerd Accusation - Apparently because we play an MMO, it means we do not go outside. Ironic that you are posting that on the internet. Also its 10:00pm at night here. I don't have anywhere to go. Do you?
Point 2 - Money Doesn't Mean Knowledge - Blizzard could have infinite resources financially, but humans still have to find the flaw in the code. More money doesn't change how fast humans will find the problem.
So please. All of you. Stoofoo.- travhimself, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Not to mention that WoW is an enormous operation. They've got a lot on their plates; give them a break. If the servers are down beyond the expected time, they usually make it up to their users by extending subscriptions for the length of the downtime.
- Sagarian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And at $15/mo. * 5 million users or so that's about $2.5 million a day in delayed revenue recognition. They've got all the right incentives to get that sucker going again as fast as possible...
- tek1024, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1+digg your comment for not only the argument but the ingeniously placed "Stoofoo."
- vidgeek, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1I want my Warcraft.....!
:( - Gorack, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1yeah i am pretty sure they give people unreasonible ETA's so that they can promote their fourms. Its pretty bad i suppose but its nothing new to anyone else here. Waiting...getting disappointed... it brings ya back to the Beta days. So in turn i suppose it's like Playing WoW is like Playing a "GOOD" MMORPG that never makes it past Beta. I just wish that Blizzard with all their money and other servers would test out patches before spamming the live servers with bugged code. I assume Blizzard must have a high turn over rate since they are always seeming to hire on their main site and get lots of new people and it never seems to get any better.
- oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"with all their money and other servers would test out patches before spamming the live servers with bugged code"
How long were the test realms up for? - Gorack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Since the end of Jan i believe
- oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"with all their money and other servers would test out patches before spamming the live servers with bugged code"
- Bonobo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4ive been trying to log in all day....first the weather stuff doesnt work...then the server crashes...then they realize the mail system is glitched and the tailoring prfession doesnt work...i also noticed all of my character spells were GONE!
it was up for about 5 min and them when blizzard announced they were shutting down the server in 3 minutes, then everyone went CRAZY in the game....constant casting....mobs....chat spamming....crazy lagging...and best of all the mobs of horde and the alliance destroying eachother in the alliance caiptal city as quickly as they could!- Lut3s, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The weather stuff works, it's just like the real world weather. It has to meet conditions controlled by the server. I feel a wow.com Forecaster in the mix. anyone else?
- ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love it when all goes to chaos in wow.
- flagrant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I got on at around 5pm pst. The server shutdown a little while after that though. I got to travel around a little and check out some of the new stuff... It's kinda sad when a game has you so hooked you spend half and hour looking for the new "weather".
Looks like some of the servers are up now... but the auth server is taking a beating. - oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Night shift FTW!
