- NuclearPyro, on 04/23/2008, -15/+468I like how much detail Yahtzee puts into his videos, you almost always miss one of the minor touches the first time round. Totally agree about having to unlock characters for what is essentially a party game...
- Trozz, on 04/23/2008, -52/+3And if you play through the single player elements, you find that you become 'That Guy', then your friends can't even put up a challenge.
- honeymustardn, on 04/23/2008, -3/+65That's what he said alright!!
- paintpro, on 04/23/2008, -26/+3There is almost more risk of epileptic seizure from one of his videos than one would find playing SSBB.
- Psykus2, on 04/23/2008, -23/+10"Totally agree about having to unlock characters for what is essentially a party game..."
You can unlock characters after playing certain numbers of VS Matches. That's how I unlocked the majority of the characters, i had 3-4 other people over playing the game when it first came out. By the end of the night we had both Sonic and Snake unlocked, the main characters Yahtzee was complaining about. I hadn't even touched The Subspace Emissary (adventure mode) until way later, and when I did I already had half of the characters in the game.- mywhitenoise, on 04/23/2008, -6/+26You have to play 300 Vs. matches to get Sonic. You did 300 in one night? Loser!
With that said, I played vs. matches set to 1 hit kills and unlocked every character in about an hour and a half, haven't played the game since.- Psykus2, on 04/23/2008, -5/+5"You have to play 300 Vs. matches to get Sonic. You did 300 in one night? Loser!"
300 split between about 5 different people. The point is, there's a ton of new characters open by default, and if you're throwing a party like Yahtzee did, you can have fun with new characters in multiplayer and still be on your way to unlocking more without having to go through single player and be "that guy". - Dwebtron, on 04/23/2008, -2/+2play with 3 stocks, games happen in under 5 minutes each. If you're playing all night, you can get sonic in no time... that or we got lucky and randomly played a level 15 times to get him, that's how we got snake... accidentally. :)
- computerusr, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1No it won't take no time. Lets say each game only takes 3 minutes(usually it takes minutes longer). 300 matches to unlock Sonic means It would still take 15 HOURS to get him unlocked, of PURE PLAYING time, not including the time it takes to switch controllers, pick players, and pick the level. Ands thats assuming each game only lasts 3 minutes!!
- Psykus2, on 04/23/2008, -5/+5"You have to play 300 Vs. matches to get Sonic. You did 300 in one night? Loser!"
- Daiken, on 04/23/2008, -0/+10You ARE "that guy".
- po43292, on 04/24/2008, -4/+2Guy is not my friend, buddy!
- mywhitenoise, on 04/23/2008, -6/+26You have to play 300 Vs. matches to get Sonic. You did 300 in one night? Loser!
- punkcat, on 04/23/2008, -2/+43same goes for Guitar Hero. bring it over to a friend's house who doesn't have it, you're stuck with ***** songs.
- mywhitenoise, on 04/23/2008, -5/+37That's because it's Guitar Hero. If you want good songs, get Rock Band.
- Rapter09, on 04/23/2008, -19/+7LOL.
I only laugh because i'm a fan of heavier music, and Rock Band's track listing is disgustingly bad, for me, anyways. To each his own, of course.- JayD16, on 04/23/2008, -1/+18Rock Band has more classic rock and metal. As a heavy rock fan you should really learn to appreciate your roots.
- Dwebtron, on 04/23/2008, -1/+3too bad gh sucks now that it's neversoft anyway
- championchap, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2Get *****, I loved Donkey Konga back in the day and I listen to Japanese Noise Rock.
If you want to play songs you love to death and grow to hate them, then play Audio Surf, thats a fantastic game too.. but it put me off a few of my old favourites.
- Akaji, on 04/23/2008, -1/+14Disgustingly bad? It certainly doesn't have as many heavier songs as Guitar Hero, but the DLC for Rock Band has had some good stuff. You've heard about the Judas Priest album that is being released soon, right? They also have a small selection of Black Sabbath and Metallica, plus a Serj Tankian (SoaD singer) song. Granted, these are DLC, but why buy Rock Band if you're not willing to shell out a little extra cash for really good songs?
Not to mention you can play the drums on Rock Band, which is at least 11 times as awesome as playing the guitar.- reckless8594, on 04/23/2008, -2/+2Don't forget the thrash pack, which includes 3 very hard metal songs.
- EvilJelloMan, on 04/23/2008, -8/+1What do you call a smelly, fat, drunk ***** who hangs around a band and no one likes?
The drummer. - championchap, on 04/24/2008, -3/+1Eugh, Serj.
Back with system he was ok, he sung what Darren told him to and all was well.
In his solo stuff he sounds like he's singing for a boyband. it's full of needless "baby" and "tonight" after everything. Do nothing words that make the song flow better but it sounds like it was written by Britney. - AamirM, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1On the other hand Scars on Broadway (Daron and John's band) is looking great so far.
- Akaji, on 04/24/2008, -1/+5@championchap
We must be thinking of a different Serj Tankian, then. If anything, the lyrics have only gotten better since he left SoaD, and the singing has become all the more powerful. Case in point: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BZSKvSz1roQ
- FXPooky, on 04/23/2008, -1/+2HAHA. Touché.
- hellochildren31, on 04/24/2008, -1/+3AMEN! i'm tired of hearing people go on about Guitar hero being the best and having "Downloadable Content" i don't call 5 song backs a big list. Whereas Rockband is constantly pumping out songs and even if you don't like all of them. They have to hit a couple that you like. ROCKBAND FTW
- cerealjynx, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1Still Alive by GLaDOS is my favorite. I'll play that anytime and I hate playing Rock band
- strangewill, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2At least they tried something new with rock band. Guitar Hero has been practically the same game for the past 4 releases, just with different songs.
- Rapter09, on 04/23/2008, -19/+7LOL.
- TrancePhreak, on 04/23/2008, -4/+4Unless you have the 360 version and a memory card, or desire to bring your hard drive. There's probably a way on PS3 as well. SSBB ties the save to that particular Wii. Bad move for such a game.
- Furkle, on 04/23/2008, -10/+2You know that port in the front of the the console that looks just about big enough to fit an SD card into? Yeah Nintendo really should have made a way to copy your save games using that. What's that? oh they did?
- Raz4Life, on 04/23/2008, -0/+12Try coping your Brawl data to an SD card and let me know how well it worked for you. I mean it's not like they don't allow you to copy your Brawl data using that. What's that? oh they did?
- JayD16, on 04/23/2008, -1/+6You can put PS3 saves on thumb drives and maybe even SD cards. Don't quote me on the SD cards though.
- vanden9, on 04/23/2008, -1/+6You can put your ps3 save data on any mass storage device the ps3 can read..
- theaceoffire, on 04/23/2008, -1/+4Including external Fat32 hard drives.
Easiest way to move lots of movies to the ps3 in one go.
- Furkle, on 04/23/2008, -10/+2You know that port in the front of the the console that looks just about big enough to fit an SD card into? Yeah Nintendo really should have made a way to copy your save games using that. What's that? oh they did?
- dasdef, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1use the cheats.
- smoger, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1not true. you can bring your guitar hero save along on an sd card. not brawl though...
- mywhitenoise, on 04/23/2008, -5/+37That's because it's Guitar Hero. If you want good songs, get Rock Band.
- Daiken, on 04/23/2008, -12/+3Yeah I returned Smash Bros for Gamecube for just about the exact same reasons he mentioned in his review. I didn't want to have to sit through the mediocre single player unlocking everything, and regardless of how much I tried on my own, my button mashing friends could still always beat me.
- Jsmuli2, on 04/23/2008, -6/+12Then you suck
- GerbilKing, on 04/23/2008, -9/+3haha his video is 4:20 long.
Weeeed.
- Stormshark, on 04/23/2008, -0/+18Warioware for the Wii is even worse in this aspect. Went to play some multiplayer right out of the box, and if I remember right, I had to unlock the multiplayer in single player!
- choopie911, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2I agree, that was a huge dissapointment. After being touted as the greatest party game ever, having to wade through confusing crap to get multiplayer was completely unneccisary.
- smoger, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1same with the gamecube wario ware.. theres a hot seat multiplayer mode that you unlock by playing normal multiplayer..
now, the only reason i'd want to play hotseat is because i dont have multiple controllers...
- mnemy, on 04/23/2008, -1/+16Seriously. Whose idea was it to require you to unlock characters in fighting games? I don't know about you guys, but when I get a fighting game, it's to play against other players, not the computer. I don't get any satisfaction in unlocking "content". It's a chore. Same goes for Rock Band type games. I picked my copy up and invited a bunch of friends over just to see we could only play like 8 songs. Retarded.
- estvir, on 04/24/2008, -1/+4Developers need to start implementing a "Party mode" for games like Brawl, GH, Rock Band, etc. It really can't be that hard..
- thestranger, on 04/23/2008, -9/+7The reason why there are unlockable characters and other things is because a crucial part to video games is a reward system. For fighting games that are not linear it's a way to create a sense of progression and reward. Is it the best way? Probably not, but it seems like the best way that I can think of. No one can deny that unlocking a character has a sense of good feeling whether its a good character or not. I mean when you play a game like Mario Bros do you get mad when worlds 2-8 are not unlocked yet? No because that is how you get rewarded and gives you a sense of accomplishment.
- Luminoth, on 04/24/2008, -0/+6Kicking the ***** out of my friends with sonic is my reward and gives me a sense of accomplishment. I don't need game developers telling me different.
- cannonball, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1I kind of agree with you... Unlocking Lizard Man in Soul Calibur 2 was the only reason why I chose to beat the campaign mode, otherwise I wouldn't have even bothered with it. But that character is more like a "secret" character. Sonic and Snake are no where even close to secret.
- Mullinsmcd, on 04/23/2008, -0/+4Is there any way to transport the SSBB save file to another wii?
- skywake, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5SD cards?
- Velirno, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3No I think they have it locked down if you have it saved to your system. I've tried it a few times now and it doesn't work :(
- simplynix, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1The definite answer is no. They say it's because it's locked to your Wii # because of online play, but you can transfer Strikers data no problem.
- smoger, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1i thought it was just to force everyone to do their own unlocking so that the completed wall would be more of an accomplishment. i think it was a bad decision. game dev's shouldnt be telling us how to enjoy our games.
- skywake, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5SD cards?
- RandaII, on 04/23/2008, -12/+2he didn't do *****. all he does is read from a script. he didn't do the flash he didn't do the script. all that bastard will ever be is a no talent hack.
- hellochildren31, on 04/24/2008, -1/+3but he's a funny no talent bastard hack nonetheless.
- Velirno, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4Well until "Randall's Ranting Hour" comes to be a huge smash, this is the funniest thing I can think of for reviews -.-
- choopie911, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2Uh...any way of backing up your jealous claims?
- RandaII, on 04/24/2008, -5/+1Die and rott in hell. just listen to the fool thats all the proof you need
- hellochildren31, on 04/24/2008, -1/+3but he's a funny no talent bastard hack nonetheless.
- themastersb, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1If only I could find this game within a 50 km radius from my location.
- bernlin2000, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1It's annoying to have to unlock before you have people over, unless you have to tell people "You'll have to play the base characters, because I'm going to have to play through the whole campaign to get most of the characters later, and even then there's a few more that have other requirements besides the campaign" So, yeah, it's pretty dumb
- Trozz, on 04/23/2008, -52/+3And if you play through the single player elements, you find that you become 'That Guy', then your friends can't even put up a challenge.
- PigGeneral, on 04/23/2008, -16/+366But.. I like this game. I'm good at it. Really. Wait... am I "that guy".
- Takfam, on 04/23/2008, -7/+85I'm "that guy" too. I bought SSBB, unlocked everything and when I brought it to the party, all anyone wanted to play was Guitar Hero and WiiSports. Heathens.
- blahtastic, on 04/23/2008, -21/+4I can understand guitar hero, but wii sports? Seriously? The only thing accurate enough in there to have any kind of decent competition at is bowling. Your friends are truly heathens.
I couldn't get anyone to put down the Rockband after several hours and play umbrella chronicles either though, so I feel your pain. (not that umbrella chronicles is a masterpiece, but mixing it up every once in awhile is nice.)- theaceoffire, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5Oh no, his past experiences differed from yours!
- mpdid, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0Golf is fun too!
- blahtastic, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2They're all fun, most just aren't designed to be terribly accurate.
- Tuto, on 04/23/2008, -39/+5Weird. The party's where i ago every just wants to have sex.
- Vinny128128, on 04/23/2008, -2/+30Oh wow, you're so cool. I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
- Tuto, on 04/23/2008, -27/+0I guess I am pretty cool, but cooler than people playing video games at parties? No way!
- saisumimen, on 04/23/2008, -1/+13"Tuto", you can keep your gay orgies, thank you very much.
- Triachus, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5I think we all need to agree to stop using the word "party" so liberally.
- 2shae, on 04/23/2008, -5/+1Though I'm not agreeing to anything what Tuto said (since I didn't read much of it), but to what kind of parties are you going where they play Guitar Hero on a Wii...I'm sorry but it sounds like a loser party.
You must really be into games, if doing that is considered a party.
Games are fun to do, but real parties don't have video games.
"Weird. The party's where i ago every just wants to have sex."
And although this is a little exaggerated, it's sounds a lot more like the parties I go to.
I don't care if you'll bury this comment...at least I'm not a Wii party game geek. - Whaines, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5I'm sorry but Wii + Alcohol = good time for all.
Completely valid party activity, get off your high horse. - jgtg32a, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3@ Whaines
Till someone lets a remote through the TV.
- Ihatenicks, on 04/23/2008, -2/+32That's church socials, for you.
- DarkShroud, on 04/23/2008, -0/+47Please don't tell us about your family reunions.
- Tuto, on 04/23/2008, -37/+1You consider family unions as parties? Wow, just wow
- CCB0x45, on 04/23/2008, -0/+37WOOSH
- chedabob, on 04/23/2008, -0/+25I don't think a WOOSH quite says it.
- Tuto, on 04/23/2008, -35/+0Well of course it doesn't say it retard because its being used completely wrong. I gave no implications that i was speaking about my family reunion, DarkShroud came up with it all by himself, so its completely logical to assume that for him parties and family unions are the same thing. Naturally we can debate about the comedic nature of his response, but with the information at hand reaching the conclusion i did is perfectly logical i.e you are using the woosh comment all wrong.
- Trykt, on 04/23/2008, -0/+36The more you post, the more you fail.
- VPurpmalkV, on 04/23/2008, -2/+30HEY!! LOOK AT THAT DEAD HORSE!!!
LETS BEAT IT!!!!
::THWAP THWAP THWAP THWAP THWAP :: - Tuto, on 04/23/2008, -36/+1@Trykt : Well the problem is that I am right. Whether i chose to ignore the joke in DarkShrouds comment is irrelevant since you can make the logical conclusion i already explained in my previous post, which means the Woosh comment is being used wrong. Then again i can understand the negative reaction to my comments which stem from my original comment dealing with sex. As we all know video games and sex are like water and oil, they don't mix. Since this story is about video games, it means it is viewed by video gamers which means they are not happy about my comment. As you can see I am extremely talented in making conclusions.
- diggduggDOOM, on 04/23/2008, -1/+25Your sex parties are becoming less and less believable with every post.
- vertexoflife, on 04/23/2008, -4/+1NO U
- neuens07, on 04/23/2008, -0/+15I'm pretty good at making conclusions too... heres mine:
Tuto is most likely a 12 year old boy who has not even had sex and barely knows what a party is because he doesn't have any friends. Also, might I say, that since he does not have any friends, he gets his kicks out of being a dumbass that everyone on Digg hates. As he thinks about how many people hate him and how big of a "badass" he looks like, he looks at anime porn and dreams of one day finding someone who will dress up like Sailor Moon for him.
Sound about right?
Oh, wait... your too big of a badass to admit that...
But we know... oh... we know... - Tuto, on 04/24/2008, -6/+1Whether or not your characterization of me is true or not, the malicious attitude of your post shows that you are jealous of the life style i presented, whether it be fiction or not.
At least i dont watch anime, and i havent got a clue who Sailor Moon is.
- logpony, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3I just think it's awesome that the guy who has SO much sex has all this free time to make point by point refutations on Digg! I figured someone with all that sexin wouldn't leave time for such pursuits. Tuto, what IS your sekrit?

- Vinny128128, on 04/23/2008, -2/+30Oh wow, you're so cool. I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
- tjmb9, on 04/23/2008, -2/+17You need better friends. Or friends that are dorkier in a slightly different way.
- iunno666, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2Friends that don't have Wiis would fit both those bills I think.
- fejj07, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Dugg for the use of heathens
- blahtastic, on 04/23/2008, -21/+4I can understand guitar hero, but wii sports? Seriously? The only thing accurate enough in there to have any kind of decent competition at is bowling. Your friends are truly heathens.
- tehnico, on 04/23/2008, -8/+34No, you're not, Yahtzee is clearly a jealous button masher.
- trunkster, on 04/23/2008, -2/+23Yeah I like it too and still wish the Wii was called the Nintendo Revolution.
- jncro, on 04/23/2008, -1/+5But where would they go from there?

You know... theoretically speaking...
- jncro, on 04/23/2008, -1/+5But where would they go from there?
- Rileyluck, on 04/23/2008, -1/+11i like this game.... damn you for pointing out its obvious faults to me that until this point didnt realize....... damn you....
- SevanElevan, on 04/23/2008, -1/+9Hey. I'm another "that guy." What's your friend code?
- OneLess, on 04/23/2008, -4/+12I'm "that guy" in Halo, but I absolutely suck at Brawl.
- elnerdo, on 04/23/2008, -1/+21Nah, EVERYBODY thinks they're good at Halo.
- woody56292, on 04/23/2008, -2/+10Everybody is good at Halo. as big a fan as I am of Halo, it is the party game of First Person Shooters.
- mediaphile, on 04/23/2008, -0/+6Guess you haven't tried the ranked games. Good luck having your party mates go up against someone who's restarted their account and is already back up to General 2nd Grade.
- woody56292, on 04/24/2008, -1/+3i rarely played anything but ranked. ( played, past tense, my 360 broke a month ago )
perhaps party game was being too harsh. There is a learning curve, and you certainly can't button mash, but after a few hours of playing, you get the general rock/paper/scissors flow of combat and weapons. - mediaphile, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2Sure, you can learn the basics in a few hours. But there's so much more sophistication to the game then that Until you work as a team with a few friends and build quick communication systems, level-specific tactics, etc., you're not going to stand up in ranked. Saying that everyone is good at Halo is just stupid. That's about as accurate as saying everybody's good at riding a bicycle.
- AzureRise, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2But..but..I though everyone could ride a bike?
- PunkRampant, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1Until you play the rest of your friends and you really are "that guy" who knows the secret ledge to stand on and snipe from.
- OneLess, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2I have no illusions that I'm good at Halo, I'm only like a captain and I've been playing it for a while. My friends just don't play it online :)
- woody56292, on 04/23/2008, -2/+10Everybody is good at Halo. as big a fan as I am of Halo, it is the party game of First Person Shooters.
- BeyondDGrave, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Everyone will say they are "that guy", that is why the people who are "those guys" don't go around flapping their mouths,...instead, they show you they are "that guy" through the game. Talk is cheap.
- AzureRise, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Talk isn't cheap. You ever tried calling those 900 numbers? They charge a lot just for talking...
- warplayer, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1But I can't play Halo or smash brothers on digg....heh...
- elnerdo, on 04/23/2008, -1/+21Nah, EVERYBODY thinks they're good at Halo.
- cathars1s, on 04/23/2008, -2/+7I really think he overestimates the learning curve of this game. My little sister was playing at a decent (read: skilled) level within 2 hours of picking up the game, and she can't even drive straight in Mario Kart DD.
- perral1, on 04/23/2008, -1/+8I think you've got it backwards.
What you're saying is the same as what Yahtzee said - you can do just at well at the game with a few minutes to warm up as with hours of "practice".- mediaphile, on 04/23/2008, -1/+11Not really. If you play with anyone who was good at SSBM and has a month under their belt of SSBB, you'll never win by button smashing. It's just too easy to take advantage of someone who has no timing or skill.
- perral1, on 04/23/2008, -1/+8I think you've got it backwards.
- CurlyMike139125, on 04/23/2008, -1/+11As soon as he mentioned 'that guy", I knew I was him.
- mediaphile, on 04/23/2008, -1/+1There are a ton of people that are "that guy". It doesn't take much to be "that guy," other than a little more than one night of play.
- warplayer, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Digg is a whole site made up of "that guy." Why do you think we all argue so much?
- mediaphile, on 04/23/2008, -1/+1There are a ton of people that are "that guy". It doesn't take much to be "that guy," other than a little more than one night of play.
- directedition, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5Is it anything like being "That Girl" from Nick At Night?
- eXorcist118, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0Yeah, 'that guy' happens to be me too, it's an odd place to be because i'm not really proud unless I can win a tournament being 'that guy'...otherwise my friends just crack on me, point and laugh. Then I suggest we play Madden...
- Vanira, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0*pokes every 'that guy' * If there's enough of you, there can be a side show!
- Takfam, on 04/23/2008, -7/+85I'm "that guy" too. I bought SSBB, unlocked everything and when I brought it to the party, all anyone wanted to play was Guitar Hero and WiiSports. Heathens.
- joey368, on 04/23/2008, -8/+237Who is Marth? I'm shocked that he didn't ask about Lucario.
- Harabeck, on 04/23/2008, -0/+163He probably would have started cussing uncontrollably if he had touched the subject of pokemon at all.

- steelclash84, on 04/23/2008, -0/+18He wasn't actually asking who Marth was. He was executing a shocking disbelief in relation to another more probable unknown character that wasn't being mentioned by Yahtzee.

- bobartig, on 04/23/2008, -2/+21Hey you shut the hell up! Lucario is my favorite brawler! "HRRRRR!!"
Ok, I'll admit it. I don't know who he is, outside of him being a pokemon of some kind. But he's some kind of kungfoo doglet thing with wall grab. *thumbs up* - Supurcell, on 04/23/2008, -1/+8I don't know, but he plays just like Mewtwo from Melee.
- joey368, on 04/23/2008, -11/+4Lucario is a nothing special abomination. Sakurai just listened to fans in his favorite cult forum chanting, "WE WANT A DRAGONBALL Z CHARACTER!", since DBZ is an anime, and therefore can't be relevant to Brawl, Soccer Eye thought of the most redicoulous bitch in the Nintendo Universe that fights lke a DBZ character, that being the overrated Lucario. ;)
- acero47, on 04/23/2008, -1/+9You have way too strong of an opinion on this.
- Protoss, on 04/23/2008, -0/+9He's basically a better version of Mewtwo.
- itsripitsrip, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3yah and apparently as he takes more damage, his the fire from his hands gets bigger, and in turn he deals out more damage.

- TheHayze, on 04/23/2008, -36/+165Oh look, it's another decent chap who doesn't buy into hyped up games as to provide an honest review of a game. Pity, though, as i'm sure some hardcore Nintendo, or Smash Brawl fan boys are already firing up their hate fueled e-mail machines.
Don't get me wrong though, I totally dig button smashing in fighting games as a successful way to win a round or three against my mates who are 100 times better then I am.- joey368, on 04/23/2008, -55/+12Honest huh. What's more credible, a well respected and unbiased web site or magazine or a single British-Australian gamer who got the game at "GAMETRADERS ROBINA". Plus his reviews don't even count as they are more satirical than taken for granted. If you played the game you'd decide for yourself, not cuz of Yahtzee.
- TheHayze, on 04/23/2008, -4/+51While that's all fun and stuff. But if that's not true, Yahtzee would be out of a job as then no one would watch/read game reviews to help them to decide what to spend their hard earned cash on. Yes I could go to "normal" game reviewers, like 1Up, or Gametrailers (and I do, mind you,) I enjoy Yahtzee because his reviews usually end up being a lot more honest, and easier to trust then say, oh for example, Game Spot. ;)
- joey368, on 04/23/2008, -12/+11If they were honest, they wouldn't be as funny. I watch his reviews because they are funny, not for advice on what games to buy. E )
- piwy, on 04/23/2008, -3/+1With all due respect, Yahtzee is quite up the respected magazine alley. If you're not aware of it, he writes for PC Gamer. Not reviewing, but PCG wouldn't put him there if he wasn't credible. For the unbiased thing, pull your head out of your ass. There's no such thing as an unbiased reviewer. As a mater of fact games are usually assigned to reviewers that like the genre to start with. Aka they are already slightly disposed to liking the game to be reviewed.
- CurlyMike139125, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1I agreed with you until the fourth sentence. Reviewers are very often biased. Go ask a reviewer from PSM, Nintendo Power, or Official Xbox Magazine what their favorite system is.Your last two sentences completely sealed your comment as a package of fail. Unbiased means they aren't leaning in any direction, and having someone who liked the genre review that genre is the DEFINITION OF BIAS.
- mcnasby, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1I did play the game. I'll agree with Yahtzee. And, if I could - I would trade it to someone for "No More Hero's" in a heart beat.

- hazard99, on 04/23/2008, -14/+43The game is fun... I don't see why everything has to be so damn perfect with gamers. Who gives a ***** if its button smashing (I personally don't see it nearly as button smashing as other fighting games), if its fun then play it. So many elitists...
- blahtastic, on 04/23/2008, -5/+16I really dont think it's all that button smashey at all. Alot of the matches seem kinda slow compared to other games, even. (Soul Calibur for instance, I can finish off the lower level single play characters in ~10-15 seconds usually.)
The problem is though, that you can get cheaped out of a win with stupid hammers and pokemon, so any amount of skill you may or may not have is negated.- joey368, on 04/23/2008, -2/+7I agree. I'd play against a young brother of my friend in SoulCalibur, he'd play as Raphael and he wouldn't stop attacking with his forward B B B thrust attack. If that isn't repetitively button mashy, I don't know what is.
- logicalnoise, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1yeah that's all my friends did with him. I just learned to expect it and parry and start comboing them to death.
- Verytastycheese, on 04/23/2008, -3/+14Brawl is not a button masher at all. Sure you can beat < Lvl 3 computers with it, but after that you need to pay a lot more attention to what is going on to actually play Dodge, shield, grab, throw and spike combos are in there and possible, and thats what makes it fun to play against others who actually play and enjoy the game.
- moush, on 04/23/2008, -2/+5Items are part of the game, maybe you should pick them up if you're so good.
- Purin, on 04/23/2008, -1/+6Who plays with items?
- thizzyy, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3I do I personally think they add to the chaotic fun that is Brawl. Especially the smash balls those things cause some crazy battles because everyone goes for them when they appear.
- blahtastic, on 04/23/2008, -1/+3I do pick them up. Not my fault I always end up with goldeen.
- Loonacy, on 04/23/2008, -4/+2... Smash... balls? I don't think I want to play this game.
- imdwalrus, on 04/23/2008, -1/+12You are aware you can turn the "stupid hammers and pokemon" off, right?
- Drakoola, on 04/23/2008, -1/+2Brawl is about dodging non stop until you're friends run out of stock, and then raping them with your 5 lives.
- joey368, on 04/23/2008, -2/+7I agree. I'd play against a young brother of my friend in SoulCalibur, he'd play as Raphael and he wouldn't stop attacking with his forward B B B thrust attack. If that isn't repetitively button mashy, I don't know what is.
- moush, on 04/23/2008, -2/+11WoW has slow button mashing yet people love it.
- Purin, on 04/23/2008, -0/+4So true.
- blahtastic, on 04/23/2008, -5/+16I really dont think it's all that button smashey at all. Alot of the matches seem kinda slow compared to other games, even. (Soul Calibur for instance, I can finish off the lower level single play characters in ~10-15 seconds usually.)
- psg188, on 04/23/2008, -14/+107I realize I am 'That Guy' and so take my obviously biased opinion with a grain of salt.
Button mashing in Smash Bros, will get you no where. Brawl is much more friendly to those who are new to the franchise, but still it is a complex game that is easy to learn, but hard to master.
Yahtzee didn't play it for very long, I do agree with his position on playing through all the levels twice, it was sort of annoying. That bottom line is, I understand why he didn't get the intricacies of the game, but when you get down to it, button mashing won't win you a tournament. It's a strategic game, one that takes much more time then I'm sure a reviewer is willing to put into it, which is understandable. I'm actually surprised he didn't bash it any more then he did.- xNIBx, on 04/23/2008, -28/+10Out of all fighting games, smash bros is probably the most noobified button smash friendly game. Even people who do get the intricacies of the game know this. So even if yahtzee didnt learn the game good enough to judge it, his conclusion is actually true.
- CCB0x45, on 04/23/2008, -2/+18People really think a button smasher can beat someone who knows how to play smash?
Thats just ridiculous. - psg188, on 04/23/2008, -2/+8Oh really now. Even people who do get the intricacies know this?
First off, I beg to differ... smashboards.com begs to differ. You good sir, are a moron.
You can't know that if you aren't any good at the game, and if you were truly good at the game, you'd realize the fallacy of what you just said. - ThugThrasher, on 04/23/2008, -1/+7Ever played soul calibur?
Now THATS a button mashers dream - bobartig, on 04/23/2008, -1/+6Not even close. Soul Calibur is the KING of button mashing success. Not only are most moves easy to pull off, but you can button mash extremely high damage attacks with really short activation times with the right character (I'm talking to you, Mitsurugi!). Super smash bros is meticulously balanced, and startlingly complex. The incredibly swingy nature of SSBB is due to the crazy item/weapon system, which he didn't even touch upon. In this way, SSBB is basically the fighting game analog of Mario Kart. There's the guy who's crazy good at Mario Kart, but every once in a while you get lightning bolt plus blue shell, and you just win. This adds a larger random aspect to the game, but does not increase the success of buttonmashers.
- logicalnoise, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1I played SC2 mostly and mitsu got toned down a lot in that one. then reamped for some god damn reason in SC3.
- Matt2k, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1I'm not a huge fan of SSBB, I played the single player campaign and a couple dozen matches online with friends, and I'm pretty confident that a button masher isn't going to get the best of a skilled player (I lost a lot).
Yes, there's no left-left-down-right-b+a *****, but that doesn't make it "noobified", it makes it sensible.
- CCB0x45, on 04/23/2008, -2/+18People really think a button smasher can beat someone who knows how to play smash?
- Gir53457, on 04/23/2008, -12/+2I always take his reviews with a large handful of salt because he's so obviously a PC FPS goon it makes it difficult for him to enjoy other sorts of games besides old adventure games. He severely lacks professional journalistic integrity and seeks out the worst the game has to offer and doesn't even try out the online portions of most of his reviews.
- IncogMosqui, on 04/23/2008, -3/+3PC FPS goon? Right. That's why his review of Crysis was so glowing *eyeroll*
Funny how everyone was singing his praises last week, and this week the comments are full of Wii fanpeople screaming that he's overrated.- mediaphile, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1Just because someone is a PC FPS guy doesn't mean they love all PC FPSs. In fact, it's easier to be more critical of a specific subject when you are intimately acquainted with it. But the fact of the matter is, Yahtzee hates multiplayer games, and his reviews of multiplayer games are amateurish and completely irrelevant.
- Gir53457, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1I meant goon as in he frequents SA.
- ChristianMagic, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1Well, yeah. When he says that a game is absolutely terrible and many people love it, of course they are going to get pissed off. You can't actually take all of his reviews seriously because he mentions hating entire genres (JRPGS, Fighting Games) and he mentions that he spends a small amount of time on the game. I agree that the best way to deal with his reviews is that take them with a grain of salt (I'm not exactly sure how a handful would change the expression) and in good humor, and I don't see how that's fanboy-like at all.
- mediaphile, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1I take them purely as entertainment. I'll leave reviews to people who actually play the games.
- IncogMosqui, on 04/23/2008, -3/+3PC FPS goon? Right. That's why his review of Crysis was so glowing *eyeroll*

- xNIBx, on 04/23/2008, -28/+10Out of all fighting games, smash bros is probably the most noobified button smash friendly game. Even people who do get the intricacies of the game know this. So even if yahtzee didnt learn the game good enough to judge it, his conclusion is actually true.
- Picaroon, on 04/23/2008, -22/+6I agree completely. Smash Bros is tired and done in my opinion, and was never that great. Going in I was ready to forsake Yahtzee completely if he loved this game, because I know he doesn't like multiplayer and doesn't take any *****.
- stratius, on 04/23/2008, -6/+15I agree and disagree. Agree, Nintendo is suffering from the same old revival of old characters. They are also suffering from revival of games. Between the three Smash Bros games they only have subtle differences in gameplay (graphics aside).
Having said that.. Disagree, it's not a button mashing game and I believe it's a good fighting genre game to get a newbie playing (i.e. seeming to be the Nintendo ideology nowadays). The game's a mostly timing based game, from what I've noticed and 'special moves' that don't require any pattern memorization like most/all other fighting games. It still has the complexity, but falls under the range easy to learn tough to master as opposed to 'memorize stuff a while, then learn the gameplay'.
I liked the original very much and played every weekend with friends for years, didn't like melee because it was too damn flashy and now they toned the flashiness down and nerfed some characters. Characters being Nintendo characters, so what? You shouldn't end up picking a character because you like their looks anyway, only their moves/combos/etc.. I know no better 4 player fighting game that's just fun. Oh no, a game that's fun? Let's take it down a few levels because it adheres to some stereotypes of the company and genre it's in that this reviewer didn't seem to like anyway.
However that's how reviewers work, you can either relate to them or not and pick the reviewer that matches you best, there are no absolutes.- Purin, on 04/23/2008, -1/+7Subtle differences in gameplay?
Did you even play the other two Smash Bros. games?- stratius, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1Yes. I played the first one at least once a week with friends since it came out around '99 until 2006. Maxed out all stats on all players, blah blah blah. Melee admittedly not too much, only a few times. When I say subtle differences, I mean slight changes in the game engine rules/balancing. The core gameplay/ruleset is essentially the same with some minor tweaks (from a programmer's perspective). Things like air block/air grab/buffering tricks are not things I would consider core gameplay, especially not for the average user. They are minor differences in gameplay though.
I.e. I would consider them more of a different patch rather than a new game.

- Mashedup14, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1Uh, but I WANT to pick a character based on their looks. That's the ***** point. I don't give a ***** about the boring-looking anime cookie-cutter character, no matter what awesome moves he has. Sorry.

- TheFinaleofSeem, on 04/23/2008, -2/+5I played Smash 64 and Smash Melee a little. Not a great deal, but enough that I was familiar with SSBB and I enjoy it immensely, and I'm not "that guy". You don't have to be "that guy" to find it fun. I don't have it myself, but a friend of mine does. Yes, he beats me (like every goddamned video game out there) all the time, but if winning is the only way you have fun in video games, then you can ***** right off. Just enjoy the ride.
- Thorlord, on 04/23/2008, -1/+6i hate fighting games, but Super Smash Bro's is the only one i enjoy, purely for the fact that button smashing will get you nowhere. its the only fighter that i have found that you will lose if you do button smash.
also, it appears to be the only fighter to use a second plane of fighting, providing some aerial combat rather than just hopping around on a horizontal map that loos the same as the last horizontal map.
i usually agree with his reviews, but not this one, he is right about pretty much everything else (camera is too far back at times, unlocking characters is stupid) but the game play is very different than what you will find in Tekken, DoA, or Soul Caliber. - wayyy, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2Actually, his review was somewhat biased.
He even tells you that he dislikes fighter games and wasn't pleased about having to review Brawl in the first place. - MrFisty, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5You know what's funniest about this? Not the video itself but the fact that anyone in the last month who voiced criticism at SSBB was nearly exiled, but as soon as Yahtzee voices criticism everyone happens to say "About time someone calls it like it is."
- kevlarbaboon, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2You're absolutely right. I was almost half-expecting to see diggers rebelling against Yahtzee...boy was i wrong.
- AdamKinmont, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2I could agree with you if you think that brawl doesn't take a lot of skill but ssbm is another story. It's probably one of the most technical fighting games ever made.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kElSEt7Vktw&feature ... - Jpotts12, on 04/24/2008, -2/+1That part about button-mashing is total *****. Unlike most other fighting games (tekken, soul calibur), you can't really button mash in smash bros. because it won't result in an insane 10 hit combo. You'll just be left doing random, ineffective moves. I am a "that guy" who has played the smash bros. series for years, and trust me, I have never EVER seen a button masher beat an experienced player in melee or brawl.
- Jpotts12, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1Wow....not a single person on here has a ***** clue about Smash Bros. Brawl. And the guy from zero punctuation sucks at thinking.
- joey368, on 04/23/2008, -55/+12Honest huh.

- honeymustardn, on 04/23/2008, -24/+173This was an excellent review, mainly for his comments regarding Mother 3. ***** you Nintendo. You're a *****.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 04/23/2008, -11/+2Nintendo is going to fail again. Let's just do the same ***** till it's dead.

- Jsmuli2, on 04/23/2008, -37/+158Am I the only one who can't get enough of this game?
Although it feels like my eyes are going to bleed after like 4 brawl matches.- WhereAmI, on 04/23/2008, -21/+4Seeing as the way you put it is that you play it all the damn time you are who Yahtzee pointed out as...(I'll let you answer it) unless you somehow live with 15 other people that play the game with you constantly.
- Jsmuli2, on 04/23/2008, -3/+141. I don't play all the "damn time"
2. I have at least 1 other person playing with me or I do those mini games.
But all in all, this game is pretty solid. And since Nintendo made it clear that they are NOT going to push online play too much with their system, their ability to keep a person interested in Smash bros is ON. So, this kind of contradicts Yahtzee a little because he always complains that a game shouldn't need the multiplayer aspect to excuse crappy single player/campaign modes. Smash bros is fun single player or multiplayer.
- Jsmuli2, on 04/23/2008, -3/+141. I don't play all the "damn time"
- X9001, on 04/23/2008, -15/+106Seeing as all these people lack the ability to form opinions of their own probably not. They just hate it just because Yahtzee does
- GenericJoshman, on 04/23/2008, -7/+42Bingo.
- VgRasta, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2Royal Flush.

- Cyber_Akuma, on 04/23/2008, -3/+4Just about anything on the internet that allows one to score another's comments is that way nowadays, even Digg, people who dare post something unpopular or against what the rest want to hear have their comments buried from negative scores.
- yohnstoppable, on 04/23/2008, -1/+21Meh, I think people just need to view him like anyone else you know who plays games. I'm sure he hates some of my favorite games, and I'm sure I hate a lot of his as well. People have different opinions and tastes. That being said, his reviews are funny, and I enjoy them. I don't care if he bashes a game I like, because I don't define myself by the ***** toy I play
- thejwac, on 04/23/2008, -1/+2Yohnstoppable, you've just made the best comment I've read today. Congratulations.
- ThaDRD, on 04/23/2008, -2/+2I haven't liked this game from the start. I've sat down and played it twice...and then went and bought CoD4 for PC and can't get enough of it.
- X9001, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1I'm glad you were able to form an opinion of your own
- ThaDRD, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1Is that sarcasm? I wasn't a fanboy, I bought the game, and gave it a shot. I didn't care for it. That's all.
- X9001, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1I'm glad you were able to form an opinion of your own
- hellochildren31, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1I was quite satisfied with his Halo 3 review though. All that game did was disappoint and then after jumping into wow and seeing all the frat boys think they were leet was just funny cause when attending a party i could kick their noob asses. I am "that guy" only because they are "that noob"
- estvir, on 04/24/2008, -2/+1Going against SSBB is more thinking of your own than being one of the mindless ones who love it.
I'm a SSB fan, by the way.
- GenericJoshman, on 04/23/2008, -7/+42Bingo.
- ajb2015, on 04/23/2008, -8/+21I love smash, and ***** everyone else. Most of Yahtzee's criticisms are pretty standard for smash, and none of them are really reasons not to play the game. One place where I think he is totally off base though is that he this game a button-mashing fest. Sure, anyone can pick up the game and learn the basic controls pretty easily, but if you mash buttons you'll eventually just fall off the edge. Unlike most fighting games, smash gives you a lot of area to work with. You'll have to do a lot more than run at your opponent and combo him into a corner, or just do the same move over and over again. Also, just because it is easy to pick up doesn't mean you have mastered the game. Once you learn the basic controls, the game becomes much more complex in terms of learning when to block, dodge, roll, edge-guard, and air-dodge. If you get a group of skilled friends together, you can have some pretty epic matches.
- seraph582, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2i'll tell you why I don't play the game: because it's NOT REALLY ALL THAT GOOD, and there are games that ARE GOOD
is that a good enough reason?
- seraph582, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2i'll tell you why I don't play the game: because it's NOT REALLY ALL THAT GOOD, and there are games that ARE GOOD
- Smoo930, on 04/23/2008, -1/+3I'm with ya on that.
I play with 4 other "that guys" and when the trash gets talking, more than eyes start bleeding...
So much for a teen rated party game. - Neekolazz, on 04/23/2008, -2/+3I love brawl. And I agree with Yahtzee on the 'unlocking characters in party games' but everything else... To fix the screen issue, create a name, and put it on yourself.. you'll never be lost again. Also, Yahtzee has never been big on party games... He doesn't even like multiplayer for that part. I knew he wouldn't like this one before I even clicked it.
- AdmiralJimbob, on 04/23/2008, -6/+16Yahtzee has never actually been a good reviewer, so I'm not sure what the fuss is about. He's amusing, certainly, but nothing more than that. Like the Welsh.
- Jsmuli2, on 04/23/2008, -0/+6I love how the Welsh run
- FoxOrian, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5I will always agree with Yahtzees constructive criticism on consistent bad decisions game developers make in different genres. [like how to better implement quick time events, and in the case of this review, to not lock advertised/hyped characters and extras for a PARTY game.]
Just like any review, they shouldn't be taken to heart, as they're just someones rant on their own opinion of the game from their tastes and background -- you're smart enough to formulate your own likes and dislikes. He at least gives his reviews a good shot of intelligent humor, even making himself into a bit of a character for us to relate to, making his biased reviews far more interesting than any unbiased writer.
- jsaya, on 04/23/2008, -4/+34? I think you meant OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAND!
- Jsmuli2, on 04/23/2008, -1/+1Nah, just 4, no matter which TV I use...I am serious too, that wasn't a joke, my eyes are killing me after a few games. I would play longer if it weren't for that.
- jsaya, on 04/23/2008, -1/+1Is it an HD display? Are you using component cables? Have you tried the "Deflicker - ON" option to make gameplay slightly smoother? - http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/im ...

Unlock every song
That being said, my friends and I had a load of fun doing band quick play. But have since been unable to reload our band so that code has become our friend.

- MuffinPatrol, on 04/23/2008, -10/+32They did the same thing on rock band. I had all my friends over when I got it just to find out there was about 45 of the 58 songs missing and you had to play through single player to unlock them. I was pissed, and have since become "that guy"
- cheeseron, on 04/23/2008, -1/+8you can unlock all in multiplayer through the band tour mode thing

- gh0st3000, on 04/23/2008, -0/+4seriously, if you're at a party, you're not looking for achievements or anything. just skip it.

- jkmyoung, on 04/23/2008, -0/+0Don't know how you become 'that guy' in Rock Band, since you can each play at a different level. Thought it was supposed to be cooperative, but I guess there's still people who live solely for the purpose of beating other people. You and your friends should have went with Smash Brothers then.
- amenic, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1Can't people who don't want to become 'that guy' just plug in some kind of cheat code(s) to get the unlocks anymore?
- estvir, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1There's one for GH3 that unlocks all the songs. I started using that at parties since I was unaware there was like 4 songs you unlocked by doing co-op and those 4 songs or so ended up being some of the best.
- cheeseron, on 04/23/2008, -1/+8you can unlock all in multiplayer through the band tour mode thing
- papaslurp, on 04/23/2008, -16/+5This sort of content, with its intricate details that flash on-screen for less than a second, is what Internet video culture is all about. Writers and directors don't have to worry as much that their viewers will miss something when they know their content can be easily and instantly paused and reversed. The minutia makes us pay attention more and watch more than just once.
- DarkSamus, on 04/23/2008, -1/+5the difference is that yahtzee > all

- estvir, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2Carilion City sounds like a Pokemon city name. D: I have actually been to the GT store Yahtzee mentions and I think I live about 50 minutes from him..
So, does Game Traders import games for you? I never knew they did that.. but I was aware of their awesome retro collections, my MegaDrive library is slowly growing.
I need to shop at EB less and shop at GT more.. At least my GTA IV CE is at GT. :) - Batiu-Drami, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2Carilion City is an arcade in the Perth CBD :). And yeah I don't know if GT will do specific import requests, but I know they import new games early (and sell Freeloaders for Wii), as well as quite often breaking street date for games - a mate of mine got Bioshock nearly a week early from them.
