CANCER secret CRACKED
news.com.au — Australian scientists are hoping to cure leukaemia, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis after their breakthrough discovery of how to stop killer blood cells growing. The team has unlocked the secrets behind the protein which controls the way the blood cancer cells spread when it is damaged - and have found a way to stop its deadly process.

- coinman987, on 08/11/2008, -7/+102I've read the article and I wish they would've elaborated on how a possible cure for leukemia could also treat asthma. If I'm not mistaken leukemia is a form of cancer of the blood and asthma is a chronic disease that affects the airways. Nevertheless, interesting article, I hope this works out.
- BoneheadFarker, on 08/11/2008, -0/+44FTFA:
"The GM-CSF hormone - which controls the production of blood cells in the body - works by attaching itself to the receptor proteins, which then send a message into white blood cells telling them to multiply.
When damaged, the protein's messages cause an over-production of cells or cells which persist too long, resulting in diseases such as leukaemia as well as some inflammatory conditions"
The same mechinism that causes luekemia can also cause inflammation. Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the respiratory system. I'm just hoping that this can be linked to Crohn's Disease too... - Alegoo92, on 08/11/2008, -9/+2I know.. cancer is like auto-immune since blood cells attack the body, right? Asthma is an environment-triggered reaction where the airways get clogged with mucus and such..
- kerrle, on 08/11/2008, -1/+7No, actually. The incidents are environmentally triggered, but the underlying reason that asthmatics respond that way while others are fine are immune related. Asthma, psoriasis, and some forms of arthritis are very closely related, and would all potentially benefit from this type of approach.
- 10scott10, on 08/11/2008, -1/+3so the cure does not really have to do with any break through in cancer, but rather a break-through in immunology
- docbob84, on 08/12/2008, -0/+0Leukemia IS immunology, in the same way that a breakthrough in brain tumors would involve cancer AND neurology. All the fields of medicine interweave like that.
- ngmcs8203, on 08/11/2008, -0/+35Just as to elaborate a little, not all forms of leukemia are non-curable. I was diagnosed with ALL at the age of 3, went into remission at 8 and was labeled cured at 11.

- xaogypsie, on 08/11/2008, -0/+25Leukemia is a blood cancer, a mutation found in the bone marrow. In my case, the mutated cells releases a protein (ABL protein, I think) that kicks the bone marrow into overproduction mode for white blood cells. This ends up forcing mutated white blood cells into the bloodstream, packs the bonemarrow full, and eventually immature white blood cells start overtaking the blood. Nasty way to die.
Although I am not curable by chemo/medication (and might not survive a transplant), they are able to use a chemo drug that inhibits that protein. It does other stuff, but I don't really understand it all. Basically, I'll live a normal life with leukemia, as if it were diabetes (ie needs to be watched and controlled).- ekdevdas, on 08/11/2008, -0/+19good luck mate!

- spvn, on 08/12/2008, -8/+5no seriously, ***** y'all. I'm typing this right now with an asthma attack going on and every breath takes an effort. my friends even thought i was angry with them cuz i wasnt talking to them, when in fact i was just trying to focus on breathing because it takes so much effort. So any hope of curing my illness, im looking out for it. stop making unfunny jokes about how cancer keeps getting cured. Those with cancer are even more hopeful when they see stuff like that. So for those of you who dont have asthma or cancer or some currently untreatable disease, shut the ***** up please, for the sake of the rest of us.
- Thestormo, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3Yes, it must feel great so see your disease is cured then have all your hopes crushed. Wouldn't it be even more meaningful if the articles were actually true when they were posted and not merely hyperboles?
Cancer doesn't have a cure, and the title should not state such. Cancer is a complex disease that is far more complicated than a single 'fix' or 'cure' can deal with.
What I am getting at is:
False hope is worse than no hope. At least with no hope you can deal with the reality of the situation. - WheezyMustafa, on 08/12/2008, -0/+6I have asthma too, and I hope they find a cure for it, but I'm not being a whiny bitch about it. :p
- PixelEater, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I have asthma, but I'm okay with it if you choke :)
- notwkf, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I didn't make it past "y'all"
- PokerGigolo, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2Just a suggestion, but maybe, just maybe, it's ok to step away from digg for a few minutes when an asthma attack hits. I can say this much, if I wake up to a news story tomorrow about a guy that died of an asthma attack in front of his computer with a half-finished digg comment on-screen, I will indeed find that funny.
- spvn, on 08/12/2008, -2/+1ok im sorry for my initial outburst, was feeling really bad earlier and am better now and realise i went abit too far. my point is, there have been diseases that were deemed "incurable" in the past but us humans eventually got around to curing them (smallpox), so there's always hope that cancer or even AIDs could be cured one day. And making fun of every new discovery to do with a cure for such diseases (regardless of how small/ridiculous it is) just isn't funny...
- Thestormo, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3Yes, it must feel great so see your disease is cured then have all your hopes crushed. Wouldn't it be even more meaningful if the articles were actually true when they were posted and not merely hyperboles?

Cancer kills the talented people just as much as the untalented.
Also, cancer is one of the biggest concerns in western countries - countries whose populations are decreasing due to low birth rate, and need to ship in immigrants for work!
Where are the benefits? - inThePoopShoot, on 08/11/2008, -1/+6You seriously can't be that stupid. It's not an effective way of population control. Look at todays population figures, they just keep going up and up regardless of what diseases are out.
"We've cured cancer, AIDS, TB, MS, and just about every deadly disease about 10 times over the past 20 years. "
Where's your proof? How can you confirm this?
If you know anything about disease research, perhaps you wouldn't buy into such dumb ass conspiracy theories.- VitriolAndAngst, on 08/11/2008, -5/+1Wait a second, You seriously think it is delusional, to consider that SOMEONE wouldn't do almost anything for Billions and Billions of dollars?
How many times have we heard of a company shipping a drug that they knew kills people, and covered it up? Do I need to fill this page with examples?
There may or may not be a conspiracy to NOT cure cancer, but I would say that if they found a cure, it would be delivered like a baldness "treatment," and you would take it the rest of your life. THAT is what makes the most profit.
I'm not anti-corporation, but you folks that call everyone who is suspicious a tin-foil-hat wearer are perhaps the most naive folks around.

- aeoo, on 08/11/2008, -12/+3I disagree with your line of thinking. Just to tickle your mind, consider that God might be a scientist and may cure cancer using a type of science that our Earthly scientists have yet to discover? I mean, you make a lot of assumptions in your statement. If God is what people think it is, certainly God can cure cancer. If you don't believe that God exists, then you cannot honestly say "God will not cure cancer", since a non-existent entity cannot honestly have a will. If God is a sentient being, like a human, then he/she/it can certainly do all the same things that any human can. If God is a superset of a human, then obviously God can do anything within the human subset.
Your thinking is ***** in more ways than one and who has the time to go over it here in digg? Not me.
Don't be blinded by physicalist materialism. Diseases can have non-physical causes (like mental conflicts that later manifest in the body). If you don't believe me, just become horribly conflicted about something and dwell on it and see what happens to you. Of course the conflict has to be an honest one. Anyway, I agree with the lolcats person...why is this relevant? - Shoebox639, on 08/11/2008, -7/+8Just felt like stirring up the pot a little. With every major scientific advance, religion loses ground.
The sky used to stay up because Atlas held it up.
Disease and suffering used to be from Pandora's box.
Then it was because Eve ate the apple.
The Earth used to be at the center of the Universe.
The Earth used to be flat.
All creatures were created by God as they are now.
The Earth was 6000 years old.
Therefore: science > religion- liongoesroar, on 08/11/2008, -6/+6Uh, if you mean science > crazy fundamentalist Christians, then you'd be correct. But not all religion is that basic. Science and religion DO NOT have to be in opposition. Most well-developed theology coexists easily with science.
- OfficialJoe, on 08/11/2008, -3/+5Scientists. Equating religion with God since the dawn of modernism. When will you ever learn the distinction?

yeah it coexists easily after science blows previous theology out of the water and they have to play catch up and adapt theology to fit scientific molds...
A lot of those theories were common beliefs at one time and we are STILL facing a ludicrous contingent of people who contend the earth is 6000 years old and that all creatures were created by god as they are now.... basically denying the mountains of molecular and plain observational evidence supporting evolution. - BabaRamDass, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1biotch, not all theology has been blown "out of the water." Indeed, Buddhism has certain roots which have predated modern science; it's almost as if science was catching up to Buddhism.
- blarch, on 08/11/2008, -1/+3cancer is god, because god is everything right? i believe in the universe. the universe is everything.
- BabaRamDass, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2"God does/can/will not."
What if God was a name for the force that drives the universe, the force that drives evolution, the force that allows the flowers to bloom, etc. Indeed, it would be the name for the force that drives the scientific method, the force that drives the blood that flows through those scientists, and undoubtedly the force that delivers the cure. Paradoxically, God is also the force that drives the cancer to begin with. Alan Watts called it the "Eenie Weenie trying to make the Eenie Weenie."
My point is that God means a lot of things to a lot of different people. Most Christians would call me a heretic for my definition of God, but not everyone believes in their definition.
(blarch kinda makes my point.)

This will go nowhere. Even IF it works. Big Pharm doesn't want to CURE cancer. They want to continue to TREAT cancer.
Same thing for Type 1 diabetes. They've proven that capsaicin injections into the pancreas stimulate the production of insulin in Type 1 patients. They've also demonstrated that the tuberculosis vaccine flat out cures Type 1 all together. Most of the companies don't have drugs in the advanced stage pipeline in stage 3 clinicals, thus the incentive to come up with a cancer blockbuster will be... well ... pretty great. Being as most of their drugs will have gone generic. - VitriolAndAngst, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5I''m not going to agree that there is a conspiracy, but I would say that there is a profit motive in an effective TREATMENT, that requires a patentable drug.
The things you mention are, for the most part, over the counter, or reproducible by others.
The best way to prove these things one way or the other is to get some stats on whether top executives of big pharma companies and their close relatives ever die of cancer.
>> I think the best outcome, is that there be money put back into science and take over developing these "cures" at a government lab or university. It could easily be funded, by Big Pharma companies actually paying back for all the research they sponge off of Universities and package into their over priced drugs. - fantasticjon, on 08/11/2008, -4/+8Are you guys for real? - sstidman, on 08/11/2008, -2/+10Ehh, I'm not a big believer in these kinds of conspiracy theories. They start by assuming that the pharmaceutical companies are in cahoots. All of them, big and small. So if one of them comes up with a treatment, all of them will make no attempt to find a cure.
In reality, these companies are competitors. They don't give a ***** about each other. And finding treatments and cures is incredibly hard, despite what conspiracy theorists will have you believe. So when one of these companies finds an effective treatment, all the other companies will spend all their time trying to find something better so they can knock their competitor off their position as the lead provider of treatment for a specific disease. If in the course of searching for a treatment a company finds a cure, do you really believe they'll say to themselves "well, we've spent all this money finding a better treatment and accidentally found a cure....let's not tell anyone because we don't want to hurt our competitor"? Of course not, they'll say "excellent, let's put this on the market and bury our competitor".
Please, please, please stop with all the ***** conspiracy theories. They always start by assuming stronger associations between groups of people than actually exist in reality. And they always grossly underestimate how hard it is to find a cure.- 2reflective, on 08/11/2008, -2/+2"In reality, these companies are competitors." This seems an important step in helping stop leukemias (a subtype of cancer -- saying "cancer" is a bit broad). Obviously, with the receptor structure known, it can be blocked with a drug or antibody and help slow growth. This could, nay, will, take years before being clinically relevant. Even if this drug is efficacious, it doesn't mean it will be safe. Maybe blocking the receptor halts other crucial processes. When reading these articles, approach with skepticism - journalists are not clinicians.

Does anyone remember within the last year or two a discovery of some off the shelf drug whose patent had expired but was found to have an affect on cancer? It was found in a western Canadian university...
The big outcry was that since it wasn't patentable and profitable, no big pharma company was about to spend any money to put it into clinical trials.- Cleremond, on 08/11/2008, -1/+2That was the Dicloracetate (DCA) cure. It was tested at the University of Alberta and was proven to cure human cancer in lab rats just by adding it to their drinking water. It is a freely available natural compond and hence cannot be patented. It supposedly reactivates the disfunctional mitochondria in cancerous cells inducing apoptosis without adversely affecting nearby healthy cells. The FDA has also restricted the sale of it to the public as they don't want people treating themselves with it. www.getdca.com was forced to stop the sale of the compound as a cancer treatment.
I look at it this way. If I have stage 3 or 4 cancer that's gonna kill me, I'll take my chances with DCA and the easily mitigated neuropathy that can accompanies its use.- wing05, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2"The FDA has also restricted the sale of it to the public as they don't want people treating themselves with it. www.getdca.com was forced to stop the sale of the compound as a cancer treatment."

Thanks for this info. One of the two has breast cancer that's spread. Her doctor wants to go straight to palliative care, say your goodbyes and try to be happy for whatever time you have left. She wants to fight. Maybe this might help.

- Cleremond, on 08/11/2008, -1/+2That was the Dicloracetate (DCA) cure.
- iancgi, on 08/11/2008, -11/+2Cancer is a fungus. If you never want to get cancer raise the ph your body to 10. Fungus and bacteria cant survive in a alkaline environment.
- AnOMNOMymous, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1IT IS CURED
- ownwonnow, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4A cure for asthma would certainly be welcomed by me as opposed to treating its symptoms.
- Chimone, on 08/11/2008, -6/+8It costs more to treat cancer than to cure it. therefore this "cure" will never see production. greedy Americans will make sure of it
- Nudar, on 08/11/2008, -1/+7Because as we all know, the only pharmaceutical companies on Earth are located in America.
- joeanon, on 08/11/2008, -1/+2That's idiotic. They are dumping billions into cancer research just to improve the 'cures' we have now.
Most people with cancer have remissions chances not simply because they have this reacquiring disease but because part of their genetic code is damaged and causes this condition called cancer.
It's not like other diseases, such as polio, which is just one disease, cancer manifests itself in thousands of different ways, it's easily the most complex class of wide spread diseases out there.
New treatments are always welcome especially for hard to treat leukemia, asthma and arthritis. There are billions of people suffering from those worldwide, and more treatments that work mean more money and a little bit less suffering.
Rejecting small advances for your ideal magic bullet cure is just small minded, don't know jack about the situation BS. - diggydougie, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2From what I can tell this discovery just halts the growth. But you still have what you started with. So you would still need treatment.
- cyclades, on 08/11/2008, -3/+9Digg is a remarkably disease free zone. Why I feel healthier already just digging here.
