California science museum reopens with green theme

edition.cnn.com — It is not the strongest nor the smartest species that survive, Charles Darwin once said, "but the one most responsive to change." Amid the menagerie of brightly colored and well-camouflaged creatures on display at the new California Academy of Sciences, it may be the building itself that best illustrates Darwin's assertion.

    • scubaman5000, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Life is pretty damn durable in certain forms. Water bears in particular (google it) will survive nearly anything that could happen to the Earth. Life will go on I'm sure, however, which forms of life go on is another story.

    in today's never ending din of arguments over global warming and greenhouse gas emissions, leave it to sir charles to cut to the meat of the matter. this quote is a classic, and proves without a doubt that no matter what, species will adapt to changing environments, be them "natural" or not. in each of our DNA holds the secrets of a 6 million-year struggle against ever-changing environmental conditions.

    ices ages, warm periods, biblical-level floods, super-volcanoes, epidemics, starvation events...its all in there. i agree with darwin, i don't think we can out-smart our way out of climate change. we just have to adapt better to the realities of it.

  • datdamonfoo, on 09/26/2008, -0/+0I used to frequent the old California Academy of Science museum when I was a child living in San Francisco. It still is the best museum/aquarium I've ever been too. I miss it fondly and when I tried to go back several years ago, it was closed. Now that I no longer travel to California when visiting my parents, as they have moved, I am quite depressed that I will never see this new version of my favorite childhood memory.
