        Fundamentalism from either camp is bad. That said, all the non-religious people I know and many I've read about are very tolerant and understanding of religious beliefs, and have come to very long and thoughtful conclusions that religion has no foothold in reality and are at all times EXTREMELY open to changing their conclusions given a shred of reason to know there's a deity and/or creator of any sort that transcends the physics of the world we can touch and see.

        All of the progressive "non-fundamentalist" religious people I know and respect on the other hand categorically either do NOT accept, or put any thought whatsoever into the existence of our universe without the involvement of a creator. If they do at some point put thought into it, they conclude their beliefs are relics of humanity's struggle to cope with fear of reality and have in turn become atheists, or whatever stupid name you want to put on a person not willing to throw their consciousness into proofless malarkey.

      The weird looking cell would be the only cell in the picture, so therefore the cancer cell. Actually it's not weird looking at all for a cell, it reminds me of a normal lymphocyte.

      AIDs is very real. Consider that over 1 billion people in the world survive on less than a dollar a day, and consider that the regions with the highest infection rate are the poorest regions; by combating poverty we are helping provide education and protection from the virus.

      Also, there have been a lot of breakthroughs regarding cancer in the past few years, and I believe we are very close to curing some forms of cancer. With research going towards cloning cells and continual research in genetics, we may be able to neutralize some types of cancer within the next few years.

The cancer cell is attracted to one side of a plate by chemotaxis. It crawls through the hole pictured to get at the bait... something like FBS. You can see the cytoskeleton extending out like arms to grab hold and pull itself along.

    • m0laria, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Cancer cells are essentially the offspring of a somatic (body) cell which, through mitosis, gained a series of "bad" mutations. Normally this wouldn't be a problem except that one of those mutations causes the cell to not die a natural death and to not let the immune system kill it off. So, the structure of that cell appears highly abnormal because its obtained mutations which caused it to grow those outgrowths and sploshes of seemingly amoeboid plasma membrane, and its cancer because it won't die. That's my undergraduate-level guess as to why the cell looks so strange.

Then the cells are placed in a growth environment where fetal bovine serum is used as a chemotaxis (bait). The cell moves from one side of the well, through the collagen, through the pores (pictures) to the underside that contains the chemotaxis. If you look closely, you can see the cell's cytoskeleton reaching out ahead of the main body to pull itself along. The number of cells on the underside are then stained and counted. The relative count gives a measurement of the motility of the cell. A second similar experiment can be done using matrigel which tests for invasiveness.

The overall process of this "attraction" is generally lumped into the concept of chemotaxis. The trick is to condition the cells in a serum starved environment for a day or so, so they are literally "starving" of nutrients. The general rule of thumb is that cell culture that does not contain some percentage of FBS (~5%) will kill the cells within a few days. Growing them under serum starved conditions, therefore, is tricky. If you forget to change to enriched medium, the cells croak.
