Fancy Lightbulb Makes Plasma for Students
davidpace.com — Eleven tungsten wires glow white hot inside a vacuum chamber. They emit electrons that are accelerated into the conducting chamber wall by way of an applied voltage. As these electrons approach the wall they ionize background argon gas that was purposely leaked into the chamber. This produces a plasma that is studied as part of a lab course.
