press.web.cern.ch — When the LHC starts up this summer, its proton beams will collide at higher energies than have ever been produced in a particle accelerator.

- dylio, on 07/01/2008, -4/+3Can anyone tell me why we're building this? I mean, we hear about "lol, blackhole will kill us.", but never about what it actually does.
- db113456, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Well, energy for example would be a good point to start with. If they can achieve a sustainable , energy positive fusion reaction, that would unlock the secrets for fusion energy and make human kind independent from fossil fuels for a few million years to come. In a side note. That would be a good reason alone, and it would also be a good reason for many to oppose it ...
Also the facility would allow scientists to discover more and more details about the structure of matter and the behavior of time and space at the quantum level.- Rikety, on 07/02/2008, -3/+1And having us learn more about quanta and picoparticulates is good because? I think man already has a God-like complex, especially the Physicist-types. They're about even with Messianic-delusional political figures.
- radikahl, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4If everyone had an attitude like that we would still be using stone tools, and grunting.

- jflowers45, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3For some reason I still think the black hole jokes are funny
- ShaggyRogers, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2The only things I'm looking forward to this summer:
1. The Dark Knight
2. Radiohead
3. LHC - Rikety, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1That really makes me feel warm and fuzzy - a 'verified' study that there won't be any problems with creating new particles, no danger to the earth, and authored by the Party Animals at UC Santa Barbara.
Oh, and really, you can spell Christening correctly - it DID come from the word, 'Christ.' - RaspberryTang, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2No harm will come to the entire Earth, although some parts of France and Switzerland may be destroyed :-)

Another safety web site: SaneScience.org - hiscity, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1The chief purpose of the LHC is to make euros go round in circles faster.
