Stephen Hawking to unveil strange new way to tell the time
telegraph.co.uk — Prof Stephen Hawking is to unveil a remarkable £500,000 clock with no hands that pays tribute to the world's greatest clockmaker.
- 1974 diggs
- digg it
- picardo, on 09/14/2008, -37/+10I don't understand how this clock would show time. It sounds kind of arcane.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 09/15/2008, -2/+7Sounds pretty damn futuristic to me.
- yojiffyskippy, on 09/15/2008, -2/+9You have failed to understand the concept young grasshopper.
- daebat, on 09/15/2008, -1/+3Could it be that it does exactly what the title says... a new way of showing the time... jeez
- kitkatsavvy, on 09/15/2008, -3/+3err don't you just have to look at the 3 purple slits that are lit up in the picture? im assuming the outside ring is hours, middle ring is minutes, inside ring is seconds.. so 2pm with 15secs perhaps?
- tacoface, on 09/15/2008, -1/+1$#(%$# you! Two of my best friends died unveiling a remarkable clock with no hands!
- NikoKun, on 09/14/2008, -6/+87Well, can someone make a cheaper one, so we can all afford it? =/
- Gman1223, on 09/15/2008, -0/+51Hold on
(Calls China)
How's $2?- greenlight2001, on 09/15/2008, -2/+55But it's 90% lead and only comes with engrish directions.
- RobotKeaton, on 09/15/2008, -4/+28Me no rikey.
- Wilsomatic, on 09/15/2008, -2/+17@RobotKeaton:
You rack a discaprine. - killerofkiller, on 09/15/2008, -1/+6YOU WANT MILLION DOLLA?
WHO POOP LAST? - InformedCrab, on 09/15/2008, -10/+4LOL CHINESE PEOPLE
THEY'RE POOR AND THEY CAN'T SPEAK ENGLISH PROPERLY. HAHA
The humor is palpable. - RobotKeaton, on 09/15/2008, -7/+3@ Wilsomatic:
Me Chinese, me play joke, me go pee pee in your coke.
- vlurk, on 09/15/2008, -0/+20We could even make it 1$. But then, this clock would be right only twice a day.
- iamghost, on 09/15/2008, -3/+4how will i know when its 4:20?
- Nitesmoke, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2By my smell.
- Gman1223, on 09/15/2008, -0/+51Hold on
- AmyVernon, on 09/14/2008, -8/+16It looks like it would be a royal pain in the ass to tell the time on it, but it also looks gorgeous.
- RocquesDiggs, on 09/14/2008, -8/+39The clock is someone's dream come true. Isn't it based on some old methods of clock making only modernized because it runs on 60 watts of electricity, or equal to a 60 watt bulb?
It is going to go on a College Library building and I am sure it will draw lots of attention there with its flashing blue lights and all. It shows time by the flashing lights that will pause to show the time.
We will have to visit Cambridge to see it.
When you have a dream and a lot of money and you are 86 years old you can fund projects like this. :o)- Ghoztt, on 09/15/2008, -11/+5...instead of feeding people...
- InformedCrab, on 09/15/2008, -3/+2Why is life, money, and the government all about hungry people? God knows, at least they're not obese.
- subliminalurge, on 09/15/2008, -1/+3Why should he spend his money on feeding people? Let the lazy ***** plant a damn garden.
- scottsutherland, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3It made sound a bit awful for me asking this, but how exactly is Stephen Hawking going to unveil it? I mean, there will have to be someone else to do it, as he has no motor control.
- Ghoztt, on 09/15/2008, -11/+5...instead of feeding people...
- George2003, on 09/14/2008, -18/+9I have a clock without hands. It is a digital Hulk watch I won at Chuck E Cheese for 500 tickets! Which equates to £500,000 spent :(

I bought mine used for 100+- slonrgjon, on 09/15/2008, -1/+3it was a 5 finger discount
- KingCritter, on 09/15/2008, -2/+3...you payed one-hundred dollars for a thing that tells time. Why not buy a five dollar one and spend the rest if your money on something worthwhile?
- Nitesmoke, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2@KingCritter
Because he's one of those assholes that think sportin' a Casio will attract him some poon.
- Synapse84, on 09/15/2008, -0/+8I'll stick to my Sundial
- cnot3, on 09/15/2008, -1/+7I just stare directly at the sun to gauge it's position in the sky.

- betheturtle, on 09/15/2008, -1/+1That's what the Greeks said, and they are all dead. What next?
- dafragsta, on 09/15/2008, -2/+5Y'know. Sometimes you tell the day by the bottle that you drink, and sometimes when you're alone. All you do is think.
- root1657, on 09/15/2008, -1/+2Cause I'm a cowboy.... on a steel horse I ride.... I'm wanted, dead or alive....
- geoboy, on 09/15/2008, -0/+6I'll stick with my stick, which I stick in the ground. It tells me the time 'cause the sun goes round.

- UpperUpsilon, on 09/15/2008, -3/+7I'll stick with my Golden Compass, thank you very much.
- yayintertubes, on 09/14/2008, -16/+8If it's a speaking clock, maybe not the best person to endorse it. Just saying.
- games396, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Well i would love to hear Stephen Hawks voice every second of everyday
- atomsky, on 09/14/2008, -10/+2wish there was a video, google didnt help

- kd420, on 09/14/2008, -2/+31The wiki article gives *some* clue as to what might be going on, but it still seems really weird:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grasshopper_escapemen ...- TVarmy, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2This calls for a How Stuff Works article. Is it meant to be more precise or more efficient than your plain old grandfather clock? Or is the appeal more that it's mechanically clever or elegant?

- BooneFaustus, on 09/15/2008, -3/+2Actually, digital clocks can have hands too. If the second hand stops on every second it's digital, but if it moves in one smooth motion it's analog.

- BooneFaustus, on 09/15/2008, -1/+2I did RTFA, thank you very much, and no where in it does it dispute what I said, but I decided to look it up anyway. I couldn't find anything to correlate what I said so I admit that I was probably wrong. That being said I'm now going to look for the person who told me that and back-hand him(I had no reason not to believe him and he had a convincing case).

Digg users should not decide if he gets banned or not, and digging or burying an article because of the submitter is wrong. If you think the content is good, digg. If you don't like it, bury. Otherwise you too are going against the spirit of the site, IMO.- spidoman, on 09/15/2008, -3/+1Eh, if they give us friends list, basically saying, hey just digg each other up despite the article; I should have every right to digg every article down based on who it is.

- 4d669, on 09/15/2008, -1/+10If this clock does it what it promises to do, then making this same machine x10 bigger would make a perpetual motion machine that could generate energy as long as the Earth rotates. I finally know what I'm going to do for my Capstone. THANKS DIGG.
- protonone, on 09/15/2008, -1/+3I love special clocks that tell time in unique ways. Like those watches that Woz has. It's more fun then just looking at a digital read out or an analog face.

- Paneoz, on 09/15/2008, -5/+1And this whole time I thought this guy was on a wheelchair?
- nickfartzone, on 09/15/2008, -5/+4My friend was over and he saw my (disgusting) clock, he said oh lets put it in the dishwasher. he says that if you unplug it and put it in, and let it dry for 4 hours it will still work. Is this true?
- sparrowkc, on 09/15/2008, -1/+2Probably more than four hours, water on the electronics shouldn't hurt, but if you plug it in while it's still wet then you will short stuff. I duno about the LCD.
- famousdave, on 09/15/2008, -0/+12How could you possibly know when 4 hours has passed if your clock is unplugged?

- OddsBodkins, on 09/15/2008, -2/+0"Its massive round face, nearly four feet in diameter, was engineered from a single sheet of stainless steel, the mouldings - like a series of waves rippling outwards - were blasted into place by precisely-controlled explosions under the sea."
This incredible clock is fascinating, amazing, compelling and baffling. What extreme manufacturing. "It is a new way to show time, with light," - DeuceDiggalow, on 09/15/2008, -7/+1I CAN HAS PERPETUAL MOTIONS!!!!!!!!11
- SealHammer, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4I'm not sure if you'll be able to tell whether it's time for the Vikings game on that thing without a calculator, a sheet of paper and one hell of a memory; but I can see myself soon....
"Hey guys, I bought a 500,000 pound clock and I don't even know what the ***** it says. But it looks cool." - p51d007, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3My Casio cost me 50 bucks, sets the time automatically at 5am every day.
