Tumor Cells Can Be Reversed and Converted to Normal Cells
thebiologyblogger.com — By lowering the levels of a certain molecule, scientists have found a way to convert tumor cells into normal cells that reproduce and die like normal cells.

- GunDownCCL, on 07/02/2008, -6/+3I thought that scientists didn't know what cause cancer, or thought there was no specific cause, and now this guy is saying its a result of a simple raising of the level of myc in your system. It seems that if true, someone should have thought of this before. All the same, I hope it is.
- WiseWeasel, on 07/02/2008, -1/+9Science does not stand still. New discoveries are made all the time, and our understanding changes with them. Assuming there is no cure or that others would have thought of it first is just about the worst way to approach the search for a solution to the problem.
- visitmyblogplz, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3They don't know exactly what starts cancer, but they know what cancer does (accelerate cell growth).
- baldr, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2 We know the cause of cancer at the level of understanding how it results from genetic mutations, but still don't know many of the details of how cancer cells operate (individually and en masse). Accelerated cell growth is not the only thing "cancer does," and even that term isn't quite accurate, it is more of an uncontrolled cell growth. (the lack of widely known knowledge about cancer cell biology is unfortunate.)

[Edit]I realized after posting this from the submitter's comment below that the citation was added after your post. Thanks for keeping the blogger on his toes![/Edit]- PoliticalMan922, on 07/02/2008, -0/+9Aye, he kept me on my toes. :)

- PoliticalMan922, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6I added a reference for you, saxreturns.
As for GUnDownsCCL. Scientists noticed that when the levels of Myc were high, there was an increase in cell growth. And, when the levels of Myc were low, they returned to normal. We learn something new everyday.- saxreturns, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5Thankyou! I bet my comment gets buried to hell if this gets popular now. Oh well, at least I did my scientific duty...
- PoliticalMan922, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3I hope it doesn't get buried. You did what I (and I am a biologist in training) forgot to do...Called for the facts. I am glad you did. So, if I can help it, I'll be digging your comment up! :P

Cancer would be cured
Marijuana would be legal
The war would be over.- crazyfingers33, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4and ron paul would have already been elected president, don't forget that one
- Sornos, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2If the fervor on Digg was matched everywhere, Ron Paul would be God Emperor of the Earth.

- arma, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Is it one of those things, we hear about it here, say 'yay' and never see it again?
- cmyk, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9Wow, they've cured cancer again!
- sockpuppets, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Science. Keeping mice cancer free since 1982.
- kakapu4u, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2This is awesome. It's been like 2 days since we had a cure for cancer.
- mangz, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Why not just link to the original article instead?
Mmm, the blogspam... - Janizzary, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1More promising cancer news :)

- hermes369, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5The scientists should hurry up so I don't have to quit smoking!
- CatsAreGods, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Myc is the key to cancer in mice!
M-y-c...k-e-y...m-o-u-s-e! - SilverBlade2k, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Just wait until Big Pharma sends a boatload of cash towards this to buy it out..
- apophenic, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1cancer has been cured in vitro before, this won't hold up in human trials
- warholsbluecat, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4I'm a tumor I'm a tumor I'm a tumor I'm a tumor......
- Ne007, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Just think...all this is only 10 years away....and even after those 10 years it will only be 10 years away still....the wonders of modern science amazes me.
- SabrinaHeaven, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1Minor downside: The converted cells turn purple; treated patients will look like purple-spotted aliens.
- nedy78, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1So as it is cancer is there to control the population, so to speak. Whether it grows because of a choice we make i.e.,smoking, excessive sun exposure, artificial sugars etc... We try to control these malignant growths to give our loved ones and ourselves a comfortable recovery or death. Many times the recovery is painful in itself. No doubt science may defeat cancer, but there will be another and nature continuously mutates and advances herself and will find another way. Having watched those who struggle, I'm all for the advanced medicine and the fight.
- JoeVet, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1This is a stupid blog from some one who knows nothing about cancer. He has obviously read something by another blogger or journalist who is equally ignorant of the science involved in fighting cancer. Unfortunately its the best science that home schooling provides.
