Tiger Woods Wins US Open in Sudden Death
sports.espn.go.com — On the 91st hole at Torrey Pines, Woods stood strong on his wobbly left knee in putting away a determined Rocco Mediate in sudden death to win his 14th major title.

- GibitStylin, on 06/16/2008, -2/+30Well he did play some of the best golf of his life, and nearly pulled it off, so next time, try to give the underdog a little bit of credit.
- pbd1637, on 06/16/2008, -1/+14Were you watching? First it took a birdie on the 72 hole for Tiger to force the playoff. Then Tiger needed another birdie on the 90th hole to force sudden death. Rocco blinked on the 91st hole with a tee shot in the trap and a pull out of the trap, and he still almost tied Woods to go to the next hole.
You remind me of the poor announcing by NBC. They were all getting erections watching Tiger play and wondering "how Rocco has stayed in it for so long..."
Johnny Miller was the worst. On the 18th play off hole, they both had to make short putts to force the sudden death. Miller says; "Let's see if one of these guys hiccups." WTF?
He could have said; "Watch and see if one of these chokes and loses the tournament by missing a 3 footer."
Johny Miller was like that all weekend. Pointing out all the ways somebody could lose the tournament. At least he was fair, always pointing out how Tiger would probably miss the fairway, "AGAIN". I just don't want to listen to that loser (Miller) any more.- MysticSavage, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Johnny's still bitter after being Nicklaus' bitch all those years.

- kevcowiffle, on 06/16/2008, -0/+20Just sticking with Tiger through the 18 hole playoff for as long as he did today earned my respect. When you're 45, try playing a fifth consecutive day of golf against the greatest of all time. Rocco is a hell of a guy.

"I tried to break him down mentally, tried to intimidate him verbally, by saying, 'Water on the right, OB on the left,' just before his downswing," Woods once said in an AP interview. "He would look at me with the most evil look, but he wasn't permitted to say anything. That's the frustration. He couldn't say a word, but he always had an escape word. He never used it.
"One day I did all my tricks, and he looked at me and smiled," Woods said. "At the end of the round, I told him, 'Tiger, you've completed the training.' And I made him a promise. 'You'll never run into another person as mentally tough as you.' He hasn't. And he won't."- Trav3133, on 06/16/2008, -0/+43u saw the commercial also?

- tolbs, on 06/16/2008, -2/+14Tiger is 13/13 going into the Final Round with the lead in Majors, thats pretty dominant....
- duerra, on 06/17/2008, -1/+5When Tiger plays, he has to beat 80 people over the course of a weekend all at once, any of which could be playing some of the best golf in their lives. When Federer wins a tournament, he has to beat a just few people to get to the final round, one at a time.
- moduc, on 06/17/2008, -5/+1What a load of crap! Federer has to play everyone of them, each is a match itself. Yes, you say that, but that actually points out Federer is bigger a sportman than Tiger (only consider that point). Tiger just needs to play 1 match. The physical demands in tennis is also much higher.
- dickybrown, on 06/17/2008, -0/+31 match? it took 91 holes to win the US Open this year - not to mention, I think tiger would kick Federer's ass if it came down to it :)
- Ortheos, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Michael Schumacher has won just about every race he's ever been in, you were saying?

- moduc, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1@dickybrown
In average, how many power swings are there in 91 holes of golf? In average, how many power swings are there in Tennis? We're talking about the effort it takes here.
With golf, you don't have to adjust to your opponent's plays. In tennis you do. In golf, you actually just play yourself against the court.
When it came down to what? They can't play against each other.
In tennis, you have to think quick, react quickly, in golf, you just take time, walking along, no much physical demand there. For the mind, it's probably on par with each other, or harder to compare.
I am not trying to put down his talent. I don't say Federer is better or worse. But I just pointed out the argument made by duerra is very flaw.
- GibitStylin, on 06/16/2008, -9/+182 words FTW: Michael Schumacher
- Bukowsky, on 06/16/2008, -13/+6Tiger is the most dominant player in GOLF. But he is nowhere close to the most dominant player in ALL OF SPORTS!
period.- gavin422, on 06/16/2008, -2/+10Well, I'm not saying Tiger would be amazing at basketball or anything. But I'm saying that no basketball player comes close to dominating basketball as completely as Tiger dominates golf.
- Dundasbro, on 06/16/2008, -9/+3I'm pretty sure if he was as dominant as you say he is, then he wouldn't have to go into sudden death ever.
- bigbadgoat, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3Ohh so thats why, when you take every golfer to ever play and compare them to Tiger at the same point in their careers, none of them come close?
Well, Jack does... sort of...
- SteelCurtain08, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4This would be the point where you would name the player that dominates his sport more than Tiger Woods.
You can't.

- adogg06, on 06/16/2008, -3/+25It was a historic weekend for golf - we probably won't see another player like Woods in our lifetimes. On a different note, Johnny Miller is the cockiest, *****, most petty has-been of an announcer I've ever listened to. He totally detracted from what was a great US Open.
- tapiocasunshine, on 06/16/2008, -1/+3Absolutely agreed.
- LanceUppercut, on 06/16/2008, -1/+4No *****. He is so incredibly negative it is amazing. He is always right in hindsight and I would love to be able to mute his ass without muting all of the golf. I find it amazing that he has a job, as I can't see why anyone would actually like to hear what he has to say.
- FrankFutter, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Not to mention he kept saying some inane things like "Villegas looks like he's going to paint Tiger's house" and "Mediate looks like he shouldn't be here but at Tiger's house cleaning his pool." Yes, Tiger's great, but don't take away from those guys. Villegas has an incredibly bright future and Mediate is what makes golf less elitist. He's a friendly man that kept in touch with the crowd. My hat's off to Mediate for it.
- mzx639, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1"we probably won't see another player like Woods in our lifetimes."
The same thing was said about Jack Nicklaus and Bobby Jones before him. Statements like that are ridiculous, someone else ALWAYS comes along.- daEXpress, on 06/16/2008, -1/+4The key word is lifetime. Surely someone may eventually come along but it may be 100+ years from now when all of us are dead and gone. It is amazing being able to experience a golfer like Tiger.
- ajwinder, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3Timeline from Nicklaus to Woods was pretty short, but I mean, you have to wait and see by just how much Woods eclipses Nicklaus. I say this because Tiger is just entering the age when a golfer normally has their best years. If Tiger stays happy, he could be even more dominant. He could complete the grand slam. He could make it incredibly difficult for someone to best him. You put enough major wins up there, and it'd take a ridiculous golfer, who also stayed healthy, to best the record. Though, Nicklaus's 18 major wins was talked about as the pinnacle of golf, and now, it just seems like a matter of time till its shattered.
- mzx639, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1"It is amazing being able to experience a golfer like Tiger." That was said about Jack Nicklaus too.

- ericner, on 06/16/2008, -11/+2An amazing tourney to watch. I, too, was pulling for Rocco the whole time. If only because he is so good natured compared to Tiger's "I'm entitled" attitude. Tiger seemed to quietly whine about every miss-hit. It seemed like we were all just there breathing his air. Normally he's a like-able guy, but not compared to Rocco.
- SteelCurtain08, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3I didn't know intensity and a strive for perfection were negative qualities.
Was he supposed to be satisfied with bad shots?- ericner, on 06/16/2008, -1/+1He's not supposed to be satisfied, but he could limit the club throwing and f-word expletives that he constantly blurted out. In many ways, he still has a lot of maturing to do.
- SteelCurtain08, on 06/16/2008, -1/+3Who is that hurting? He throws his own clubs in disgust at himself, I never once saw him drop the f-bomb, although he did say "Dammit Tiger" or "God Dammit" a couple of times.
But he's so in his head that his disappointment can only come out one way.
Not sure that's immaturity, more that intensity thing I was talking about. - ericner, on 06/17/2008, -0/+0He threw out an f-bombs on Saturday and once on Sunday. Throwing of the clubs, too. I get the intensity. It's not how I want my kids to see how a "champion" acts. They will model that behavior. Not acceptable. He's good; I get that. But don't put him up there to be a role model -- Rocco was the role model this week.

- hawksfan03, on 06/16/2008, -3/+5Did anyone mention Tiger only has one good leg? He is without a doubt the best golfer in the world on ONE good leg and it's really not even close.
- blackinthmiddle, on 06/16/2008, -1/+1Obviously, the knee was affecting his play but you don't want to diminish what Rocco did. If the knee is that bad, don't play. If you play, don't make excuses. It would be like if Jordan lost to the Jazz when he scored 38 points then blamed the stomach flu that he had. A true competitor wouldn't want to diminish the other person's win and wouldn't even mention it.
- DeadFox1, on 06/16/2008, -1/+39Although I was rooting for Tiger, Rocco is a class act. He deserves future glory.
- Jwoey, on 06/16/2008, -8/+2Assuming no foul play, nobody deserves to win but the winner. You don't take turns because you were classy or consistently second best. He'll deserve it when he earns it.
- fastonkeys, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2I think a LOT of good will come Rocco's way as a result of this performance. I totally agree that he's a class act, and his levity is very refreshing. - fletchsd, on 06/16/2008, -2/+4The USGA and Torrey Pines did the US Open very proud this year. Tiger was thrilling as ever, and Rocco converted some of those Tiger fans for one tournament.
It was great to see such an incredible championship on a course I have played so many times. I wish they could hold the US Open at public courses every year. Just think, with a little luck and not a ridiculous amount of money anyone could go out and play the same course the Open was played on. Over the next few days it will probably be a 6+ hour round because every one who is going to play the course will try it from the tips. - daEXpress, on 06/16/2008, -0/+25The only thing more intense than this match-up was spending the day making sure my boss didn't catch me watching it.

- Vurk, on 06/16/2008, -8/+3There is nothing sudden about golf.
- Jwoey, on 06/16/2008, -0/+5to the unsuspecting gallery, a golf ball hitting them on the head is pretty sudden.
- jaybol, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3nice! digg broke this news quickly instead of making it wait several hours...that is always good to see!
- mizunoX, on 06/16/2008, -1/+2TSN's letter to Tiger: http://tsn.ca/columnists/james_duthie/?id=240182
- greengarfield, on 06/16/2008, -10/+1Awesome for Tiger Woods.
Since when are golfers considered athletes? Just asking this as some want to point out that he's the most dominant athlete out there. He doesn't run and doesn't sweat. Golf requires skills but no endurance or strength. Otherwise maybe we should also include Chess as a sport in there and Kasparov would have been the best throughout the '90s...oh but wait, that's right, he's not American.
I love Golf and Tiger but there is no comparing him with others like Roger Federer or Christiano Ronaldo.- Jwoey, on 06/16/2008, -0/+5He absolutely does sweat, they all do. Golf requires endurance and strength. Go swing a club as hard as you can... 70+ times... 4 days in a row. And between each swing, walk between 5 & 700 feet under the hot sun. Tell me you're not tired.
- isit, on 06/16/2008, -0/+5There is alot of mental endurance involved. And don't forget that playing 91 holes over 5 days is going to require abit of endurance.
- TexasShiv, on 06/16/2008, -1/+7You want to put Chess in the same arena as Golf?
I'll tell you what, fly out to Austin,Tx for a week
I'll pick you up at the airport
We'll go play 4 consecutive days of golf in a row. You'll walk the full 18, and carry your own bag. We will do all of this when you are 45. We'll see how you physically feel at the end of the 5th day, ok?
Dumbass. - adogg06, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4"Golf requires skills but no endurance or strength." Did you know that the golf swing employs more muscles than any other motion in sport? Have you ever walked 18 holes on a hot day? Hacked a ball out of ankle deep rough? No, it's not like football or track, but to say that professional golfers are not athletes shows an incredible lack of knowledge of the sport, and clearly displays your ignorance.
- justinbaker, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4oh golf doesn't take strength? lets see some of the other athletes swing a club at 130 mph, or hit an iron shot 200 yards out of 8 inches of rough, or drive the golf ball 330 yards. Tiger is one of the strongest most fit athletes around
- PepeGSay, on 06/16/2008, -1/+3Golf may not be a show of raw strength but it most certainly a test of physical and mental conditioning and at a level that few can maintain. Golf at Tiger's level is physically demanding and on top of that the mental focus required during it is huge.
- enki25, on 06/16/2008, -0/+5You've either never played golf, or you haven't played it enough to realize what it takes to be good.
- greengarfield, on 06/16/2008, -1/+1Oh I play Golf a lot. And Tennis. And Soccer. And Baseball.
Wow. Swing a club 70 times on a day? Try hitting a tennis ball over 500 times in one match. And then doing that 5 days in a row to win a tournament!
Walking 18 holes? Try sprinting for 2 hours on a soccer field.
There's a reason people over 50 can still play Golf at a high level!!! People in other sports retire when they get to 30 because it is physically too demanding. Colin Montgomery fit? There is no other sport where overweight people can compete!- enki25, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1"Doesn't take strength or endurance" /= "Requires more finesse and less strength and endurance than other sports"
For a long time fat, lazy guys have done well at golf, now they're getting destroyed by an avid weight trainer. No connection?
- enki25, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1"Doesn't take strength or endurance" /= "Requires more finesse and less strength and endurance than other sports"

- plague, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Wow, that was ignorant.
- fastonkeys, on 06/16/2008, -3/+2Please... why don't you ask Roger Federer his opinion on that one? To say that golf doesn't require endurance or strength is an obvious sign that you're unfamiliar with the game. No question that other sports have their own and in many cases more demanding physical aspects, but to suggest that golf (or Tiger for that matter) isn't an athlete? Your ignorance is self-evident.
- themightyhlp, on 06/16/2008, -1/+7I don't follow golf, but that was damn impressive
- physicx, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Simply amazing match. I was also pleasantly pleased on the live streaming provided.
- Thekirby45, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1I hate golf I think its boring and such but I have to admit that I was glued to the tv when this was happening it was amazing
- jayrod422, on 06/16/2008, -9/+2sudden death in golf - tiger played injured - give me a break...
it would be more interesting if he played with a broken nose because he got hit in the face by a golf ball and if he had to hurry up because the other golfers caddies were trying to take him out...
btw how them dodgers doing?- jnava121, on 06/16/2008, -0/+8your comment would be more interesting if you tripped over your gi - joe collection and just hit your face on the keyboard thus making an incredible stride to a logical thought process ....
- kidathinnes, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1The Dodgers and all of LA can suck my balls.

xenbet.com - chrispix, on 06/16/2008, -5/+3It was a great weekend for golf. And wtf are all the diggers doing watching? Don't you have Super Mario Brothers to play, finish a rubics cube in 23 moves, or something else equally nerdy?
- mizunoX, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3Watching golf is easy placed with the other two activities that you've listed. I don't know that any of them are nerdy, but if one is then they all are.
- marcushe, on 06/16/2008, -5/+7His name deserves to be among Michael Jordan, Lance Armstrong, Wayne Gretzky, etc.

- enki25, on 06/16/2008, -2/+6Tiger is a natural champion. He couldn't lose if he tried. Golf will never be the same. Not only that, but I don't think a better person could have taken this wonderful sport away from all the rich WASP bastards who considered it to be a benefit of social privilege for so many years.
- morgino, on 06/16/2008, -3/+1WASP bastards? Leave it to a liberal DIGGer to pull something negative out of this. Tiger Woods wasnt some broke ass from the ghetto, he's only 1/4 black anyways. Why is it if someone has a drop of black blood they are automatically black?
This was a great event for my town of San Diego- enki25, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Leave it to a Paultard to completely miss the point and then immediately start whining.
- thanakar, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1The OP is referring to Augusta. Tiger may be only 1/4 black but to the fossils that run Augusta that 1/4 black means, to them, he is 100% black. They had to swallow their pride and much more when Tiger won his first (of many) Master's. This has nothing to do with being a Paultard or a liberal Digger, it has to do with facts and before Tiger came along golf WAS viewed as a priviledged game for whites.
