BMW unveils "teaser" promotion for new "Device". What the heck is "it"?
bmw.com — Its described as: USB connection, MP3 player, DVD/CD drive, Bluetooth interface, LCD colour display with 65,000 colours, Voice recognition, High processor performance, Low energy consumption, Recharges itself. Alright, DIGG COMMUNITY solve the puzzle, what the heck is this item?

- TH3W1R3D, on 10/12/2007, -45/+9Sonsabitches!! How dare they interest me like that.
- ydt89, on 10/12/2007, -9/+106from what i can tell its some sort of USB connected Mp3, DVD, and Cd playing device. Also included is an LCD display, Bluetooth, voice recognition, high processor performance, and low energy consumption. It also recharges itself through some sort of witchcraft. But thats just what I've heard. ;D
- sphinx13, on 10/12/2007, -5/+196It is probably just a new car.
- affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Pictures of the three product:

- sanman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+88Is it their new gaming console, the BS3? Much more BS than the previous models.
- cwncool, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Some sort of electric car???
- fyre2012, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39it's the iCar
They beat Apple to the patent! - retral, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Why, it's a bPod of course.
- natey1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Removable navigation screen thats actually a UMPC? 7 Series features that people who can afford them don't care about.
- macinjosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I bet it is a device you can dock on the console of a BMW that does all the mentioned things. It could also be portable to allow you take it beyond the car. I don't think the device pictured in the video is real, I think its just a marketing image that let them transform something into many things, to prove their point.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1I agree. It's some sort of media/DVD player with a heads-up display so you can watch videos while you drive.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -15/+7It's... a thinly veiled advertisement attempt to drum up interest for BMW's 'new' device. Why is this spam on the front page?
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47By looking at the animated flash add that is shown when you click on the website. Looking at the people's faces, I would say its a new electric dildo. I mean, just look at them.
- dzarkw, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I'd bet money it's a teaser for their upcoming hydrogen car.
- kryx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@fyre2021
This is the iCar actually:

;p - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2"Some sort of electric car???"
Lolzoars. As much as I want one, that idea was killed off years ago. No fuel, no fuel market. - gxcdesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16correction..it's the ///MPod
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Allow me to address that question with my own version of their wallpaper:
http://external.pathdaemon.com/bmwdevice.jpg - rusty075, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12With the exception of "Recharges itself", current BMW's already have all of those features: the audio system has a USB/iPod connection and plays MP3's, the Navigation system pulls its data from a DVD and has an LCD display, the onboard cellphone has voice recognition and Bluetooth. HIgh performance and "low energy consumption" sounds like generic marketing speak for efficient engines. The only outstanding listed item is "recharges itself" I say it's a new hybrid model.
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20But...does it run Lin....
ahh forget it.... - boza111, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6we already have these ... they are called computers .. think about it :D
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's SUPERMAN!
- Vladamir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What!?!? MORE BMW computer products? gahhh runnn!!!! (One word: iDrive.)
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Looks to me like it's the newest viral ad campaign cum astroturf.
- astyler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4for the short record, it IS a car, as mentioned above.
If you look closely, the thing is morphing into different parts of a car, from the head unit, to speakers, to, and here is the GIVEAWAY, a car sideview mirror (as seen from above). - mergaltroid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0iCar?
http://www.mitsubishi-motors.co.nz/vehicles/cars/i_car/car/ - djlosch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1the stupid device bounced around the screen while the flash kept loading. over 30 seconds to load... ***** that.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's Spam!
- ZeroQuest, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Ultra-light Laptop?
- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I hope its not a UMPC, because those don't seem to be going anywhere at all.... but then again, BMW could bring some interest into such devices
- fudged71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14its a roobma... for your car
- saeraphas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Not an unreasonable guess. What about self-recharging, though?
Perhaps a notebook with integrated solar charge panel in the lid?
There was a time when nobody thought "laptop" if you said "Ferrari".
- royall64, on 10/12/2007, -41/+36The real question is...
Will it blend?- Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -25/+6***** off
- gmarks, on 10/12/2007, -22/+4Maybe we can mix a Zune in there and have the worst milkshake in the world! Blend it!
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2If it morphs like that, it'll get around the blades. I'll also want one but be unable to afford it.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -4/+86I bet it's a trick of deception. They want you to think it's some handheld gadget, but it's actually a new "fun-based" car, focusing on young adults. You know, the kind of 19-21 year olds (2 girls, 2 guys) who dress in GAP clothes and go on long roadtrips across the country (having fun and smiling the whole way through) for a living that we see so much in the media and advertising today. :B
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10sounds like a coke commercial.
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Those deceptive tricks are the worst kind.
- JC4P, on 10/12/2007, -41/+9sounds like a rapists best dream.

woah.......that comment is just plain creepy - squidhat, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6There are tricks that aren't deceptive.. Ask your mother, I'm sure she's had a few nice tricks.
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The 1 series hasn't been announced yet in the states, and mid January coincides with the Detroit auto show. But I thought that car was common knowledge by now??
oh well the 135 is going to be hot.
http://www.autoblog.com/2006/12/12/spy-shots-bmw-135ti/ if you guys care
- geonet, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9It is a Zune running Linux.
- rocko213, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3probably just a new console or on-board computer system, kinda like that thing they had in the dashboard with the controller knob inbetween the seats, but it turned out to suck amazingly badly (is there any other kind of 'sucking'?)(dont answer that)
either that or yeah, its some new car like the dude said up there, but who in the right mind would market a BMW to 19-21 year olds without putting it in a movie or making it cost less than 25 grand? - gerbalblaste, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5free publicity

- gmarks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+201. Is BMW not a car company?
2. Why the heck is it so loud? It just blew my ears off!
3. Why the heck does the video show an eye for like half of the clip?
4. Once again, BMW is a car company..- TheFightForGood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8answer to 3... because BMW is big brother. everyone knows that.
- SystmBetatester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3bmw designed my benq keyboard. its pretty damn nice.
im hoping for zune integration atleast. im planning on getting a new car and this came around the right time. - gootdude, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Why should a company only stick with one product. Clearly they are great at designing cars, so why not design other products. It's a much smarter idea to branch out and continue to innovate than to remain stagnant. Good thing none of you will ever run one of these companies.
- ruslanr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3BMW also makes bikes and skateboards
- BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The device is a dashboard printer combined with a black box type device that records every violation and prints tickets automatically. Connects to the cell phone, monitors and records all the conversations. Voice recognition tracks potentially dangerous words in conversations and establishes silent uplinks with law enforcement agencies. Also the device releases piercing ultra-sound unheard by the human ear, that fills the driver with a sense of accomplishment and deep satisfaction with the size of his penis.
- ez12a, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1To #3. Dont you know? They're integrating all of that stuff into their already complex iDrive system. Its a car. Not a hand-held media device.
- borderwall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1THE BMW HYDROGEN 7
http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/about/news/0,5126,1156___co-181186600,00.html
This is BMW's new hydrogen car - it could be this. These Hydrogen cars are going in to production, according to the article, they were launched end of November - being given to "selected" users 2007. All you have to do now you have one is find a gas station with liquid hydrogen. - kilmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually BMW started out making planes which is the reason behind the logo.

- razrielle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I thought cars had Alternators
- bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4old cars have generators (pre-about '65), new cars have alternators.
- Peeping_Tom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Oops
- ejsocom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks very interesting...
- kdmaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7think about it. WHY WOULD BMW MAKE CONSUMER ELECTRONICS? they make cars! its obviously some new idrive kinda thing
- HarrisonHoffman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, kind of like "Why would Ferrari make consumer electronics, they make cars!"... oh wait http://www.engadget.com/2004/03/05/acers-ferrari-laptop/ but really, I bet it's a car.
- danclimbsmtns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5iDrive 2.0, and I think it guarantees you beautiful women.
- Zeal0t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4to HarrisonHoffman:
im being a bit captain obvious here but just to remind that the laptop in question has nothing to do with Ferrari besides the logo slapped on it, so Ferrari didnt "make" it, they had probably little do to with design and nothing whatsoever with electronics and production.
and my vote goes to some sort of vehicle as well, "vehicle" because lets not forget bmw also makes motorcycles and scooters - bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10circa 2000 "Why would Apple make a music player? They are a computer company!"
- jollyroger814, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10A better linux cellphone?
- allyant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Car media player.
- linuxmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -15/+7LOL we all know its a Windows Car computer....and they lied about the 65,000 colors. it only has 1 color... BLUE!
BSOD + CAR = CRASH (literally)- pjwii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Holy crap, a blue screen of death joke? What is this, 1995?
- bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3No, Q4 2006. Sadly, Microsoft has yet to make an OS that can escape BSOD.
- lozaning, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@bbardlbradd
then you must have done somthing wrong, i havent had a bsod in 3 years. - bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@lozaning
Yes... the entire world must be doing something wrong. They are buying PCs and running Windows. The only PC that has never given me BSOD under normal operation was my last home built LINUX box, haha...
Since then I've moved to OSX, so I don't ever see it either :p. - EvolvedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1If BSOD bothers people so much, why don't they just change the color to red?
- allyant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is it not red in windows vista? Or was that just the pre-releases...
- bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it were red it would be RSOD and that's no different. You'd be saying "If everyone hates RSOD why don't they just make it blue"... that's why you bafoon.
- nickd3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4probably some kind of in car entertainment system. a "carputer" if you will.
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably just an "improved" console. The only thing I don't get is "recharges itself." Maybe it somehow pops out, and recharges when it's left in? Sounds like that would just be asking to be stolen though...
- Neovenator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'll bet it's a hybrid, with lots of gadgets and such to attract yuppies.
- jeffrehl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree on the hybrid - "recharges itself" seems to give it away. The rest of the stuff is just bait for techies.
- thehouse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1My thoughts too.
- ElGuano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cars recharge themselves all the time. It never claimed to be low-weight, right?
- JBabin3xB, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3knowing BMW, Its probably a new type of airbag
- manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah, yes. My car just crashed. I'd better listen to some music that I synced via USB this morning (it's kinda annoying trying to run a USB cable out of my house into the airbag compartment, though. Better get a laptop!), pop in a "Master and Commander" DVD, and watch it on the glorious 65K LCD screen. Meanwhile, it is charging itself via solar energy (Ha! Didn't see that coming, did you?) and calling 911 on my cell phone via Bluetooth. Now you can get help for yourself in comfort.
...okay that came out a bit long-winded. If I were in a car crash, I wouldn't mind having such an airbag.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah, yes. My car just crashed. I'd better listen to some music that I synced via USB this morning (it's kinda annoying trying to run a USB cable out of my house into the airbag compartment, though. - stefan15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It probably has something to do with their new line of hydrogen cars and clean energy (http://www.bmwworld.com/hydrogen/). Likely combining that with some new technology for the driver in terms of navigation systems, personalized settings they can take with them on flash media (combined with an MP3 player perhaps).
- havsalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what should we make of the "Sloth" T-shirt? I feel this is very central to understand this riddle BMW has given us.. (Will it do my laundry?)
- kylesherman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think it is for a device at all. They are simply asking you what your ultimate device would be, stating, "What is your idea of joy?" And most likely for all of us it would have USB Ports, a DVD Drive, MP3 Player, Recharges itself..etc It must be for a new vehicle or technology they have developed...something along those lines. Although if it is a device, it sounds like I need one.
- wvannus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Redesigned 1 series. Hopefully cheaper.
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hybrid.
- gojcaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hopefully the new M3 or 335xi Coupe. It's probably another car with a touch screen navigation, dvd and what not with added blue tooth and hard drive.
- trebe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18A car that recharges via USB? :)
- sliljestrand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the BMW transformer
- HolyJaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Isn't it obvious? BMW has teamed up with Capsule Corp!
- Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2> Alright, DIGG COMMUNITY solve the puzzle, what the heck is this item?
It's called viral marketing, which is what you're helping to perpetuate by submitting this vapor ware to Digg. - Combat247, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Its obviously some kind of in car entertainment system, or perhaps it can be taken away from the car and used as a media center, I'm intrigued.
Also: 2007 has come!!!! ;-D- bigillz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6............
- HotSoup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It's probably just something to integrate with iDrive.
- pentau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hello......
It has to be a hybrid. BMW is a *car* company.
Probably has all of these media features. - redbonefish, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4a dildo!
- ravenber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think people have enough distractions as it is while driving.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Awww.. *****... I didn't see your comment. I made the same one up in the first post. Digg me down :,-(.
- SamsLembas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Umm...... An overly complicated set of keys?
I can just imagine it:
"Dammit, my keys have a virus." - karlw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's a hybrid car. Plug your ipod into the USB, use bluetooth to connect to your cell phone, low power consumption. BMW makes cars, i don't see then branching out, they are stinking rich from cars and they are going to stick to what they know.
- washingtonydc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not sure if it's in any way related, but BMW's official ipod connectivity site has been "being updated" for two months now and hasn't been up. www.ipodyourbmw.com
- kruykaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is that a camera lens? video conference while driving?
- stefan15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Probably more like a digital camera when not used within the car. I'd think that would be pretty unsafe and I don't think BMW would go in that sort of direction.
- tmanfresno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Hi... From the video and all of the other things on the BMW website, it sounds like a PSP (without games)... But does anyone find it interesting that Sony isn't all over BMW to use Blu-Ray Disc??? Or will BRD be a new Beta Max?
- razrielle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Hi I'm a BMW
Hello I'm a Mac - diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It couldn't possibly be more exciting than playing a guitar through a VW.
- jcalaiaro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Up until now, all the luxuries that you pay for with the arguably bloated price tag of a BMW (coming from the owner of 2) have been stationary, that is to say, you cannot detach you navigation system to use for city walking. In a society that is obsessed with portable electronics, perhaps is it now time for car manufacturers to think outside of the box, or car rather, with their "electronics". If you think about it, all these technologies are already highly commercialized, so this is really not some outlandish proposal.
Rechargeable, Low energy consumption >>> Portability
USB >>> Computer Interface
DVD/MP3 Player >>> A Rival to basically every portable media player currently on the market
So if we think critically about the implications of the design of this device, then I would have to say the world may very well be introduced to a portable iDrive system, "One device to rule them all". I would highly doubt that this would be a device that could be purchased separately from vehicle though. But, then again....maybe its just a pipe dream of mine, (what I didn't mention is that I'm due for a new car early next year, so I'll keep my fingers crossed). - Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just watched the thing 20 times because of the music....what genre is that? I want.
- mouthster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3nu skool breaks
- Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks man :D
- night000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some sort of in car media center device/umpc which will recharge itself automatically + have ipod connectivity.
- mattp9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0BMW has the ridiculously complicated i-Drive control in many of their models, which has been highlighted by many if not all car publications for it's inept design. This may be some follow-up to that interface to it's various computer controlled modules such as the dang radio.
- michaelGregoire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Whatever it is, it's a portable device that comes with all 2008 BMW models.... probably.
