Digg-Proof Shared Hosting From Media Temple? Let's Find Out!
basugasubakuhatsu.com — Media Temple is supposedly offering Digg-Proof hosting with their Grid Server technology. Let's see if the grid can actually handle the digg effect on an average Wordpress blog running PHP 5, MySQL 4.1 and Wordpress 2.0.5!
- 981 diggs
- digg it
- Lord_oftheTrons, on 10/12/2007, -74/+37Or lets not!
Spamtastic.- diggywiggit, on 10/12/2007, -7/+49Why bury him? This is obviously spam that comes a few times a month.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5So far it works for me, albiet slow to load.
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -29/+141and1 shared hosting survives the digg effect just fine, without even slowing down like Media Temple is apparently doing (damnit, now I sound like an advertising rat). I've been through it several times when I linked back to my own blog, like with the entertainment pack digg if anyone remembers it still.
Anyway, for those who care: http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=7796530 (Yes, that's an affiliate link. I'm not going to hide the fact that I'm looking for affiliate signups, but hey! You can advertise it as being digg-proof and get your own affiliate signups once you have an account! If you don't want to help a man in need, just drop by http://www.1and1.com )
Mod me down if you don't like advertising, but I promise you. I'm not lying. They don't even slow down during a digg; they work perfectly fine and this is just their shared hosting plans. - calebb, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11183 diggs. Site is timing out
- cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@calebb
it's still working fine for me... - jasonhe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The stress the servers are taking is probably more than what the current number of diggs would suggest, because some people are probably constantly refreshing just to see if anything's changed. Just something to keep in mind.
- canadianguy33, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I find it funny that the first poster was dugg down.
I find it even funnier that the so called 'tech savvy' community of digg are amazed by the 'digg effect' and how many so many crappy articles about 'how to survive getting dugg...how I survived digg....how getting dugg affected my site etc..' get on the homepage of this site.
The difference between your site going down and 'surviving' a digg is only a couple bucks a month. It's not rocket surgery.
Where have all the real digg geeks gone? - RyanWilliams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3An amusing fact to throw into the mix is that I was using Media Temple when I got dugg (1077 diggs) in August, back when they used a traditional shared server format; my page didn't get knocked offline for a second, nor did it perceivably slow down (note the lack of comments about it being inaccessible).

The Grid Server is having some teething problems (as those hosted with Media Temple can probably attest to), but if Media Temple's past quality is anything to go by then it's going to become a seriously killer service. Wise to keep an eye on these guys. - tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2gcnaddict, here's a horror story about 1&1 that you might be interested in:

Oh yeah, and here's all the Better Business Bureau complaints about 1&1:

Not good!

- opensourcemaven, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25the (gs) is NOT THE SAME THING AS SHARED HOSTING. it's a grid server damnit.. completely different.
- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's a cluster, not a grid. The two are a different concept.
And it's shared. You're on the same machines as other people. You do not get your own box to yourself. - kodek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"not a grid"
http://mediatemple.net/webhosting/gs/ - timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And your point is? This is not grid computing, this is clustering. Every time they use the word "grid" on that page the G is capitalized, indicating a title, not a general practice of computing. They even call it clustering on that page: "Dynamic, clustered scalability"
- HigherLogic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Grid-Service, Grid Hosting, GS, whatever you want to call it, it's a marketing buzzword. All they are offering is clustered hosting, which plenty of hosts offer.
- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's a cluster, not a grid. The two are a different concept.
- froinlaven, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Well, the grid is sorta shared, and it's only slightly above the cost of your average shared hosting, so yeah, whatever you wanna call it I guess.
- wisedude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+73Translation: LETS SEE HOW MUCH I CAN MAKE ON ADS!
- diggywiggit, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3Look at the nice link to mediatemple in the blog
http_://www.mediatemple.net/.>/9r-basugasubakuhatsu.com - Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17That's his referal link. He's trying to cash in on Digg users.
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I made sure to type the url manually, after seeing the lame referral link.
- roflcpt3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Its already been shown that digg makes you less money on ads then you think. Some people think the worst of others *sigh*
- SIGINT, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Hahaha! I read that : LETS SEE HOW MUCH I CAN MAKE ON AIDS!
- teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Not only that but he/she is breaking a well defined part of the adsense TOS.
- ojk007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3not really, as most digg users never click on ads any.
IF this was for ad revenue, hes screwing himself over, as his CPM will go so far down its not funny - alexrandall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not from me. I have adblock installed. Although I've disable on digg.com and my other favorite sites.
- diggywiggit, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3Look at the nice link to mediatemple in the blog
- TrueJournals, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nothing yet... guess we'll have to wait and see...
- randomvictim, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12It appears to be down already. False advertisement! /lawsuit.
edit: Nevermind, it just took 36 seconds to load. I have a 15/2 MB/S connection as well, so it isn't me.- Abjure, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Surprisingly.. its still up!
- NINJ4, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8no one cares about your overpowered line
- jimparker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Lets blow this thing up. They think they can handle DIGG i doubt it. Digg this ***** lets see what happens.
- roflcpt3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Lol my thoughts exactly
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6might be spam
but lets just do a little bull busting ourselves and see if this digg offer holds up
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1slow as can be here
- Perno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It took a long time, but it worked. I wish his blog was about free porn :(
- neom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3We'll keep you running... but it may take 5 minutes to load the page.
- smartssa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's slow but not dead... yet
- scrumpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guess not- 9:07pm Central
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Slow, but working...
- wicked9, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1going going gone.
- scotty588, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Media Temple doesn't give you shell access like Dreamhost do they?
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually they do... And media temple is awesome, I use it. The new gs hosting is simply brilliant.
- d00by, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39:09, server pwnt by digg
- 4ndr3w, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4WP Error at 9.09PM Central time
- dicerandom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Ditto. I guess their "grid" of "hundreds of servers" must be running pretty close to capacity.
- 40-Dan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+260+ second load time on 3kbps DSL at 10:16 EST
- zulugrid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+263kbps, huh? wow thats blazing.
- 40-Dan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ooops. guess the only thing I do worse than typing is thinking.
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Gave me a wordpress error slowly but surely. Answer: Nope.
- AttackingHobo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Slow as frozen butter coming out of Sana Clauses anus.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4geez. its so slow
i've seen better performance with $5/month shared hosted pages that've made it to the front page - autobeef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is pretty interesting .. I signed up for MediaTemple (gs) account for this very reason a few days after they announced it. Looks like they still have some work to do:
Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at internal-db.s1000.gridserver.com. This could mean your host's database server is down. - rabbott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+67:11 PM PST still up.
Loaded after about 40 seconds...
My company's site is also on the grid server at Media Temple.
See how i didn't include a link to my site? it's because people should learn you don't always have to do shameless plugs. :) - o2o2o2o2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Load........ing.......soooo...........slow.
Not digg proof if you ask me - Abjure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Odd, its still loading reasonably quick for me.
- xur217, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ditto. Not quite sure why.
It loads in about 10 seconds. - gregpalmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm not having a problem either. My sites are also hosted on gridserver and I've not seen slowdowns.
- xur217, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ditto. Not quite sure why.
- HanSolo69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5took a while to load for me. (10:21 PM EST) and i don't really mind if this is spam, it's kind of interesting to see if the Digg effect can do its worst, even if someone profits off some referral links. post a link to your own blog and i'll Digg it.
- froinlaven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have a feeling that the initial slowness was the period of time where the grid server was compensating for the huge load on that part of the system.
Or maybe it was just diggers WANTING the digg effect to win and mentally slowing down time.
Either way, it seems snappy enough to me. - Leonaken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Slow as hell for me too. It's not that images load slowly or that data transmission is snail fast, it's that it has a hard time processing the request to the proper place.
It's holding its own against the digg onslaught, it just takes forever to process the requests. - diulei, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Loaded in about half a minute.
Digg-resistant or Digg-proof?
Big difference. We'll see. - CrackHappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Slow as hell - but no errors yet. I'm reloading like mad too. Everything load it, then reload it!
- froinlaven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes, load and reload, let's kill this thing!
- cianuro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2We're terrible.
- AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3die
- redalert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If your trying to do a digg stress test you dont do it at 10:00 when theres not a lot of digg traffic, you do it at 12-3 when most people check digg.
- digitalme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2he did it at 8am... reached the front page around 6pm...
- o2o2o2o2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+032 seconds to load and I'm on superfast Verizon Fios Fiber Optic.
Keep hitting re-load and give this MediaTemple a lesson, dont mess with DIGG. You cant handle it. - Notluf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, 226 Diggs in and the site is loading for me. Even after loading the site in 10 different tabs, only two timed out and needed a refresh, which when refreshed they came right up. Impressive.
Oh, and average response time was below ten seconds per tab. - o2o2o2o2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5RELOAD...Keep reloading! Kill it!
Command + R = Macintosh
Ctrl+R = Windows- haastyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4lol open mad tabs gogogogo
- jurand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Use ReloadEvery extension for Firefox instead.
- haastyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pretty slow load...i am on Verizon FiOS
but never the less it worked - ZigZam, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Spam! Look at all those ads you have. Site took minutes to load.
- haastyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3umm i opened about 100+ tabs it seem to be coming up slowly on all, just 1 slowly after another, but it working
- Skane, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Amusing experiment.
- Glenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I've been Dugg to the homepage of digg 5 times during the past week and the Grid-Server held up perfect on each and every Digg.
- o2o2o2o2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I've opened about a 100 tabs tooo. Im going to keep hitting it till it kroaks. If anything, it will teach them if they can handle it or not.

- oyourmom, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2nothing can prevent digg effects, nothing
- jasonhe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Then how do people manage to visit digg.com all the time?
- fredkreuger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Magic!
- digitalme, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Opened ~30 tabs on my 1.5mbit/s line, average load time was ~10 seconds, which is good considering that I'm dling over bittorent right now. (Linux isos, so don't come sue my ass!)

Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
