Embargo broken on new Scion xB and xD -- official pictures!
jalopnik.com — Seems Car and Driver got a bit lazy on their website and "accidentally" released pictures of the new Scion xB and xD!

- otatop, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28Wow, the new xB looks like a minivan. How hip!
- socalrob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27Yes that it does. But doesn't the XD look like it has down syndrome?
- thesparrowband, on 10/12/2007, -11/+62they still look stupid
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Toyota just realized that they missed their original target demographic of 20-something club hoppers and, instead, hit the 60-something bingo players with the original Scion line-up. It looks like they're turning the badge into their own version of Buick.
- NICU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I know Scion was Toyota's attempt at marketing to young adults, but they've actually appealed to the older crowd (at least around me). My dad has a 2005 xB and he loves it. There's a ton of interior room, has all the options he wanted, gets amazing gas mileage, and cost under $20,000. You can knock it for its looks, but they're actually useful vehicles.
- wikk!d, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12yeah, i drive a box. (2005 xB), it's a toaster... i "forgot to take my car out of the box".. etc...
i love it.
it doesn't look like everything else out there - a very unique design. it fits in the compact parking spots very nicely yet has more head / leg room than most cars i've seen. 30 mpg isn't too bad for a fuel only car. my only comment about the new xB is that it's going in the direction of the Toyota FJ Cruiser - not a bad thing, just interesting. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My mom's approaching 50, and she loves her '03 xA.
That new xB is gonna be a really nice car for the price, if it stays the same ($15k), even if it looks like crap. There aren't many 4 passenger cars with that kind of power:weight ratio for $15k. - slythfox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2New xB? Ew...
I like my xB.
Scions are good cars though. - davidsmero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24***** clown shoes
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1sorry to threadjack, but it looks like there's quite a few scion owners here....where do you guys all live? i'm in MKE and i've seen maybe 15 tC's since i got mine...
which reminds me, that's probably the best part about driving one. i think people recognize the B's and A's no problem, but with the tC 90% of my gas visits include a meet'n'greet with someone asking what kind of car i have, how it is, etc - gallardo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10IF ITS FROM CAR AND DRIVER WHY NOT LINK TO THE SOURCE?! Reported as spam.
Why do we need a link to a link? So annyoing.

Jeez. - masgrada, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20Whoopdee freakin' doo. This car is so gay.
- UnderWurlde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Fugly. Liked the cereal-box version better - gave it a more distinct look. Now, it's just a Toyota. Isn't that the reason they created Scion in the first place? To appeal to a younger hip crowd? They just lost me right there. It's a Yaris / Rav4 lookalike. Too bad designers have to stick to a certain style to enable consumers to recognize the brand from the get-go instead of looking at the i.d. on the back + sides. Difficult to break out of the mold when you're that restricted. Sad.
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hey, this isn't even first comment threadspam!
Minivans have sliding side doors. That has standard rear doors, making it part of a growing class of vehicles that I've heard described as "crossover utility vehicles," or XUVs. This class includes the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Pilot.
Those of you with kids know the difference. In an XUV, in order to reach the third row seat, you have to perform some kind of tilting manuever with the second row seat and climb way in back, much like you would have to tilt the front seat forward to get in the back of a coupe. If you have car seats buckled into the second row seats, that tilt/fold manuever is impossible. Not so with minivans and their sliding doors and flat-bottomed chassis - no seat moving required to access the third row seats.
This is the sole reason we bought a minivan instead of one of those XUV types. - floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a 2006 xA and the only thing I am impressed by is the gas mileage. Otherwise, the car is very lacking. Obviously you can trick it out, but then you're just driving a $20,000 can of sardines instead of a $14,000 one.
I just drive myself mostly, so it really is the only car I need, I don't haul stuff and I'm not obese, so I don't NEED the space inside, but I sure as hell want it along with seats that don't jam themselves into your back and your sides and something with nice shoulder support, telescopic steering wheel. Spoiled american, I suppose. - olegk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What is it with car companies? Why don't they hire a good designer? It's not THAT expensive. These cars are plain ugly.
- dezmd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The xB is fantastic but one fatal flaw pushed me back to the Matrix... no cruise control, aftermarket only.
Ugliest and yet MOST comfortable compact vehicle I have ever driven. 2006 xB had a terribly small engine, I'm glad to see the new one has gone larger, but the lack of the definitive corner edges kinda negates the 'different' feel of the xB and will be its downfall.
Cheers. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3XB is an emoticon
- texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Screw those. I still want a tC.
- haggie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Those look perfect for frumpy midwestern housewives driving their kids to soccer practice...
- beervolcano, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3With Scions (xA & xB at least) you either love 'em or you hate 'em. Personally, I love my '06 xA! Some people may think these cars are ugly, but I get close to 40mpg and have enough cargo room to fit just about anything that I would ever need to haul. I even had enough room to bring home a 42" plasma!
Also, to anyone that think these cars are ugly... what do you drive? If you drive an Aztec you earn an automatic "STFU!" - Thuktun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@nougat "Not so with minivans and their sliding doors and flat-bottomed chassis - no seat moving required to access the third row seats."
This is by no means true for all minivans. From my experience, this is only true for seven-passenger minivans. In all the eight-passenger minivans I've ever seen, access to the third row involved a sliding or folding seat in the second row due to the second row taking up the full width of the car. - ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The new xB is sexaay!
It's unlikely that I'll trade mine in though. I think the 2.4L is just a tad too big and would've liked to have seen a 1.8, maybe a 2.0. We'll see what the mpg looks like.
I dunno about you guys, but the appeal to me was that it was a cheap car that makes a great commuter, but I could fit my whole damn guitar (4x12, bigass case for the head+rack, 3 guitars, footpedal, etc) on the weekends at night and during the day, I can put the seats up and my son's carseat fits comfortably.
Also, the lack of the 3rd side window makes me a little cautious... seems that's adding a bit of a blind spot there.
But again, I dunno... we'll see what happens when they actually hit the street.
- nycbjr, on 10/12/2007, -21/+1hot!
- wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Go see your ophthalmologist.
- Lokix, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8yay, more ugly-as-sin Scion vehicles to make my eyes bleed...
- madcaesar, on 10/12/2007, -15/+29Those cars are ***** ugly... anyone who thinks that these cars are hot deserves to drive a Ford Fiesta for the rest of his or her life!
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Definitely. And they're slower than snot.
I encountered some smart ass in a pimped out xB the other day. Dunno what all the mods were but he definitely modded the exhaust. So, there he was, straddling two lanes, trying to crowd me out of passing him while going up the on ramp onto the freeway. Someone with real horsepower would have simply claimed their lane, then dropped the hammer to try to edge me out before the merge. I laughed, borrowed a little bit of the shoulder, dropped the throttle on my GTI VR6 to the floor, and looked his way laughing as I literally left him in the dust. I didn't even downshift.
Those things are such a joke. Butt ugly too. They should all be painted white with the two-tone blue stripe that Ralph's (grocery store) used to use on all their generic brand food. Then put the words "LOW END TRANSPORT" above the stripe.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Definitely. And they're slower than snot.
- FreakinSyco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37Looks like they took a step backwards...
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It looks like they got their design inspiration from a Bull Dog.
- thirtysixbelow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not to mention the fact that they both look like they were the same idea. If you are going to make 2 ugly ass cars at least give us 2 different ugly ass designs. It just seems like a poor idea, because if you don't like one, you are not going to like the other either. At least if they were a lot different you might grab a few people on the second design instead of none.
- kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -13/+22Ugly or not it will be a better car than any ford or chevy.
- greeneyes137, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5That's not saying much
- orxor, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7those are still better than a saturn
- slythfox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Well, the scion tc is a pretty nice car... Not ugly at all.
- fbmx24, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Thats funny since Ford finished higher in reliability than Scion did...
- Thuktun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@fbmx24 "Thats funny since Ford finished higher in reliability than Scion did..."
Your assertion seems a little broad. Were you referring to a particular model?
Scion's xA and xB appear in Consumer Reports top 10 for depreciation, citing good reliability as one of the factors. Ford, on the other hand, has four of the bottom 10, citing only poor to average reliability. Neither brand appeared in the opposite category.
- mrdebonair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16...and they become uglier!
Scion had a its own style going, should've sticked to it. Newer shapes, sure, but not breaking the boxiness! - therippa, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7Scion must be Japanese for "ugly and lacking a soul"
- davidsmero, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3No its Chinese for your gay
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Or maybe it's Japanese for "Learn grammar"?
- techiemike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I like Toyota-made vehicles, but those are just too fridge-like.
- funnylookinhat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I guess it's too bad scion cars look freaking ugly and nobody cares about them anymore.
Unless you're one of those silly fools on the commercial that say stuff like "Yea I tricked out my xC ya know it's so hott with the glow lights and all"... We all laugh at you, sorry. ; ) - Jeifurie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13TC is the only good looking Scion
- Blisshead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I do not belong to the demographic group they are targeting even a little I guess.
- evilbeatfarmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm right smack in the middle of their demographic I think, and I hate their lame ass cars. Go figure? Now.. that new supra that's coming out..
- wrestlingnrj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@evilbeatfarmer, only problem with the new "Supra" is that it will be a hybrid. It better have the same engine mounts as the Tundra's V8, or I'm never going to own one. MKIV Supra for teh win!
- foozlepop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Reminds me of GM's response to the last oil crisis: the '73 Chevy Vega (http://www.stationwagon.com/gallery/pictures/1974_Chevy_Vega.jpg). Cheers!
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.stationwagon.com/gallery/pictures/1974_Chevy_Vega.jpg
When wrapping a link in ( ) make sure to leave a space at the end
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.stationwagon.com/gallery/pictures/1974_Chevy_Vega.jpg
- xrisnothing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Hey, guess what! They're ***** ugly.
- mehan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4tC is decent, the rest of the scions are the fugliest cars on the road. their ugliness can only be challenged by another toyota - the fj cruiser.
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3For reasons that elude me, the xD looks like it took a lot of design cues from the fj. If a car is voted ugliest on the road by numerous car mags and sites, why would you emulate it?
- DunQuick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4two words...very ugly.
I never thought they would be able to make cars uglier than the ones they had prior to these...but they have succeeded....Congratulations Scion...for making 2 more eyesoars. - pitchpitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not a fan of how the xD looks rather similar to the Yaris -- I liked how the first series of Scion models at least looked somewhat different than the Toyota lineup...
- majortom1981, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2You guys must think that the Toyoyta Matrix and Pontiac Vibe are ugly too then right? the XD looks like a smaller version of those cars.
Also They did Exactly what I hoped they would do. they added more horsepower to the XB. It now has 158hp. I woudl defintately buy one now. - thomas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7They both suck...
- themoose, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1xD!!!
- alanmarchman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6where did the corners on the xB go? the current version is a sweet ass refrigerator box on wheels. and it made a sweet ass transformer, too. http://tformers.com/reviews.php?op=showcontent&id=656
- vblvbl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4The tC is still the best of the lot.
- Dren129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They still look like giant lego blocks.
- Madhattan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They just shat on the heads of their Tokyo Drift Demographic.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Positively deathtrappish.
- n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I bought my wife a new xA for a college grad present two years ago and she has loved it. The car is great, and you cannot beat the MPG!
- phearinc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Someone stole my idea to take the Borg ship and turn it into a car.
- rakaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Around here (St. Louis) it seems Toyota hit their demographic of "idiots that buy crappy cars and make them crappier." There's more of these people running around in Scions than Caprices now. People gloat about how no one has them, but I see them all the time (vertical-opening doors and all). I have an '03 Celica, and I've seen maybe two or three of them since I've owned it, and I park at a public university.
- wrestlingnrj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Out here in Orange County, just about everyone and their grandma drives a scion. No matter how many times I see them or however many friends of mine have them, they're still pieces of crap. The only Toyota I'll ever own is my 1995 Supra TT.
- cweave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hmm, still seems off. I considered an XA, but in the end couldn't picture myself in it.
- cycledesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The new xB looks a lot like the Element and the new xD looks a lot like the Yaris as someone pointed out earlier. I think going in this more "traditional" direction is going to hurt the Scion brand a lot. I know that it hit an older audience than they intended to but, at least here in Los Angeles, it's still popular with young people and this can only bring it down.
- eexlebots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ditto on the Element look-alikeness; the new XB looks like a toned-down version of the bigger box. A lot of people confuse the two when talking about the "car that looks like a box," this will only make people more confused between the two.
- SavedSoul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3U G L Y
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Ewwwww dude. Fugly. This quote from the site basically sums it up...
"angry washing machines" - destinywaste, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Just like the previous version of xB.. the new would take some time to grow on you. I absolutely hated the xB when i first saw it at the autoshow in 04. two years down the line, I owned one.
- damoek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yeah, the car looks crappy. But when you just got out of college, and you are 6'8'' you just can't beat the spatial efficiency for 15,000
I love my car! I even love that other people don't like the way it looks, Its like an ugly-car counterculture that we are starting. I get tons of love from other box drivers, I even met my girlfriend because she drives an Xb- evilbeatfarmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So it is true, losers do stick together!
- ucg1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hate to burst your bubble, but ugly cars are not "counterculture." Just look at the new Camry. Ugly as *****, yet it is very popular. Most car manufacturers are headed in the "ugly" direction or are already there. Ugly cars are now mainstream in the U.S.
Sucks because I'm shopping for a new car and I'm turned off by the hideous designs in current models. I might wait for some redesigns in 2008, but those will probably be even more ugly.
- CodeCobalt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4who cares? Scions are hidieous
- mikochu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ugliest cars ever.
- democracysucks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I love my Scion xB. I kept telling myself if anything ever happened to it, I'd just get another one because I love it so much.
After seeing the new ones...eh, not so much. - djdigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Very ugly cars.
I was behind a Scion yesterday and there was a sticker on the back that said "You just got passed by a toaster!".
Thought that was pretty funny. - norcim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What embargo do they speak of?
- evilbeatfarmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The embargo on fugly cars?
- halik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1spam, tagged it accordingly
- OUChevelleSS, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Wow, ugly boxes are very aerodynamic and great for gas mileage!
Right..
This kind of thing is why GM is going under. - Juno808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*whew* I'm glad I got my xA before they're replaced by that xD!!! Well...it may grow on me, like the first gen Scions...
- andrewbmoore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Though there are differing opinions about the looks, I have to say that the amount of interior room in the xD compared to its overall size is amazing. And they finally fixed the one reason I never previously considered buying an xA by throwing in the 2.4L tC/Camry engine.
- dogshaft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why would they make it uglier?
- Lane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3if i wanted a scion id spray paint a cardboard box silver and duct tape it to my go cart........
- blackbeard123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3my scion xb is the best car i have ever owned. for one, the price was right, and two, i don't give a ***** if you think it is ugly. funny that i am the only one smiling at the gas pump though. i think as an adult i decided to go for usefulness instead of it looking pretty.
edit: the new ones do look kinda ***** though... - DeepFreezed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thats one ugly van. people pay money for that?
- TheWeez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Originally posted on Autoblog.com
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, Car and Driver are the ones who released the pictures. I'd much rather read Jalopnik than Autoblog, anyway.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3The original xB is going to become a classic now. The good news for current xB owners is that your car's resale value is going to hold up well now. The new one so completely loses the spirit of that funky little box.
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm trying to like the look of them by staring at them they just look uglier.
