Intel price cuts, effective now!
hardware-revolution.com — Ah, I love those days. You know, the days where you hear that a big hardware parts manufacturer, such as Intel, AMD, ATI, Nvidia, etc, announces price cuts. That alone makes my day! Yes, it ’s official, Intel are cutting prices on some of their cpu this week and it’s already in effect, with stores such as NewEgg who already lowered their prices!

- Cancerkitty, on 07/22/2008, -16/+81Maybe it's time to switch from AMD.
- headband, on 07/23/2008, -5/+92it was time 2 years ago
- mo245, on 07/23/2008, -3/+2Dirk Meyer will fix that Now!
- iamthearm, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1It's been time.
- rewritable, on 07/23/2008, -1/+9Yeah because maybe then those AMD losers will go under and the next round of CPUs from Intel will never have any price cuts!
I showed my support for AMD last week when i upgraded my 3800 X2 to a 6400 X2.
- romico, on 07/22/2008, -33/+42I love AMD, they're rock. Great stability.
- mecharabbit, on 07/23/2008, -4/+62No you're rock!
- metamorfoza, on 07/23/2008, -2/+42No, you're both stoned.
- small3687, on 07/23/2008, -9/+2LOL I wish you were an article cuz I digg you.
- skyshock1, on 07/23/2008, -6/+2No we're rock!
- dacheetah, on 07/23/2008, -5/+1I am an island, and an island never cries... Or I'm the Walrus... I can't remember.
- transfuse, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2@small: Is that one of your pick-up lines?
- championchap, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5They're rock was correct.. he was talking about their stability.
"They're rock solid" would have been the complete saying.. but you know.. us Brits do like to miss things out.. endings of words, sentences, teeth, etc. - culbeda, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1The only rocks related to AMD are the ones in their pockets.
- BonersMilloy, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8It's the shorter pipelines.
- dacheetah, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3I think you mean shorter tubes...
- schrutefan, on 07/23/2008, -4/+26Great stability, poor performance. All of AMD's "high-end" stuff gets the ***** kicked out of them by Intel. Phenom sucks and their tri-cores are a joke.
- Rizmaster, on 07/23/2008, -4/+16***** stability. I would much rather have a 1Ghz overclock on my quad core than so called "stability".
Intel Q6600: Stock 2.4ghz. Mine: 3.4.
Intel is rocking right now. AMD has a very large thumb up it's ass. - lordtyros, on 07/23/2008, -1/+6Their top of the line ***** is ***** compared to Intel's, but games these days aren't really CPU bound at decent resolutions. It's nice to be able to purchase a perfectly decent (for gaming) processor for about $50.
- Pittance, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Depends lordtyros. RTS games are fairly CPU bound. And almost no programs on the market can take full advantage of a quad core, only dual cores. I prefer intel. Its cheaper, usually better, and I haven't had any stability problems at all.
Also, what is Boners talking about? Does he mean physically shorter pipelines in that the little connection leads are shorter? I doubt that would make any real difference. Unless they are making them out of cast iron, an extra 1/4 of a mm wont drop the voltage enough to screw up the signal. You could probably have 1m wires without a performance drop if you were making them out of high quality materials.- hauntedchippy, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pipeline_(computing)
- iamthearm, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0I think romico knew he was going to get attention from the post.
- mecharabbit, on 07/23/2008, -4/+62No you're rock!
- louiebaur, on 07/22/2008, -20/+57I have an AMD no complaints here:-)
- cricketsymphony, on 07/23/2008, -3/+14I have an Intel, some extra cash in my pocket, and no complaints here, either :-)
- Airloss, on 07/23/2008, -11/+5..AMD systems are cheaper..
- Pittance, on 07/23/2008, -4/+8Not if you pick 2 chips with equal performance, Airloss.
- mynameisjonas, on 07/23/2008, -0/+6I've been a big supporter of AMD for years, but lately they have been letting me down. Not only is Intel outperforming them, but their cost is not that big of an advantage anymore. I've had AMD chips in my last to machines, and I have to say the one I have now will be my last. The support for their chipsets is horrendous, and the problems just continue for me. This price cut is nice but i had already made my decision about a year ago to start using Intel.
- carlosos, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1You decided a year ago to buy Intel? Sounds like a bad decision. Shouldn't you decide how much you want to spend on a CPU and when the time comes to buy to see which company provides the best price for the performance at that price point?
It is like saying that I won't buy a hybrid car because 2 or 3 years ago it wasn't worth the savings and you don't care how the gas prices are right now.

- charlieville, on 07/22/2008, -9/+23I made a ton of money of of Intel back in the day
- AmyVernon, on 07/22/2008, -1/+5yeah, but by the time i invested, they crashed and burned and were a crap stock...
- stagmire, on 07/23/2008, -6/+1Shoulda held onto it.
- bipolarruledout, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7Funny, I made a ton of money on AMD back in the day... back when the original athlon was kicking their ass. I will say that if you have stock in either you best keep an eye on AMD's law suit against intel.
- mal1964, on 07/23/2008, -1/+27You're 25 years old when did you buy it, When you were 2?
- AmyVernon, on 07/22/2008, -1/+5yeah, but by the time i invested, they crashed and burned and were a crap stock...

- diggmaddy, on 07/23/2008, -6/+6Oh boy! 6 quad cores in one rig? Could you please point me to one which supports even 2 quads, let alone 6. TIA
- Cogboy, on 07/23/2008, -2/+12Skulltrail?
- dacheetah, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5*drools* 24 cores at once...
Although, I think software would need a bit of re-writing to really take advantage of that many cores.
Also you'd want to have a lot of very fast RAM... - mattlohkamp, on 07/23/2008, -2/+3Necrocore Obelisk?
- najibk, on 07/23/2008, -4/+124 cores for a consumer hahah... and thats when we start to approach NP = P (if you're a nerd enough to understand that)
- Nuken, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1@najibk
Seems you are not nerd enough to understand it.
Unless you are saying we will no longer care about the question (Does NP=P ?) and thread every choice so you make it seems to take P time to the user even though it takes many more cycles then that would.

- netgeek06, on 07/22/2008, -8/+9When everything goes up, A price cut from Intel is great. But not helps the average person who struggle to make both ends meet.
- michaelkbrandow, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Your comment was more than one line!
- jmpeagle, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1struggle to make both ends meet? WTF? What ends?
- xolot1, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4some good deals there.
ill be interested to see whats on the lineup for back to school. might i be back on the market soon? - mrzack, on 07/23/2008, -4/+41good, now i can burn and render my conspiracy videos even faster.
- bipolarruledout, on 07/23/2008, -6/+8So I guess this means that AMD isn't completely irrelevant yet despite popular opinion?
- Rizmaster, on 07/23/2008, -2/+6No, they are.
- FaithclubDotNet, on 07/23/2008, -14/+4I buy whatever is cheapest, but I like AMD chips because if they overheat, they power down the system. When Intel chips overheat, you need to buy a new chip.
- headband, on 07/23/2008, -1/+13you really have no idea what you are talking about.
- Retrospekt, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8That's not even close to being true. wtf?
Intel chips shut down just like any other chip. I don't know where you got this info... - smashhell, on 07/23/2008, -4/+3....... You got it opposite bro. =/
- jonathandyer, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1He had the opposite, about 7 years ago, they both shutdown when overheating. you're both wrong.
- CannedCorn, on 07/23/2008, -4/+4stop overclocking *****
- DyceFreak, on 07/23/2008, -4/+4That is a motherboard feature fool...
@CannedCorn, anyone who doesn't overclock is getting robbed - tama00, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Its a feature on your motherboard typically called the watchdog but its pretty much standard now days.
- jjb123, on 07/23/2008, -3/+20Damnit! I just bought a q6600 last week for $209.
- DyceFreak, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8newegg had em for $200 for about 2 months now...
- RoflcopterFUEL, on 07/23/2008, -0/+6+shipping + tax (at least for us here in CA :( )
- Smiley09, on 07/23/2008, -0/+930 day price match? Or do they not do that anymore...
- TheVirus, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Newegg doesn't offer it. I bought a camera that went on sale 2 days later for $15 off. I asked and they said they offer no price protection.
- dabura, on 07/23/2008, -3/+1*****...just bought my dell for $700...

- MikeSetera, on 07/23/2008, -1/+20Great timing... I'm about to build my first quad core rig. :)
- scoottie, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2why dont you wait until the new chips come out in a couple months
- theaceoffire, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1What OS's support Quad Core well?
Do any apps? - smiley2billion, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2I HIGHLY recommend the Q6600. It over clocks like a champ (mines at 3.6GHz on stock cooling) and is now $200. You cannot beat that chip.
"What OS's support Quad Core well?"
Windows XP, Vista, OS X, Linux. All of which will run with the Q6600 very nicely with the right motherboard.
- Retrospekt, on 07/23/2008, -0/+28E7200 for 113 bucks is a steal. They overclock to 3.8 on low volts if you get a decent chip.
- ControlcChris, on 07/23/2008, -3/+5time to buy some cpu's...
- mattlohkamp, on 07/23/2008, -2/+6I don't get it. Is that apostrophe possessive or contractual?
- nicenerd, on 07/23/2008, -9/+0As soon as I read this I thought "you've got to be ***** me" - just ordered a quad core 2.66 ghz from Newegg just yesterday (a q9450 for about $330). Thankfully this wasn't affected by the cuts - so I can relax. I don't have to kiss Newegg ass over the phone to get money back tonight, hooray (?).
- Protoss, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4I've found Newegg is very forgiving of price cuts. I bought a hard drive and a couple days later, they had a sale on it and dropped the price 10 bucks. I emailed them asking if I was eligible for this discount and was credited $10.
Gotta love Newegg.- dacheetah, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4If Newegg shipped stuff to Australia (at a reasonable price) they would be the most awesome online computer shop ever.
- pileofstraw, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1they don't even ship to canada, you actually get service in Australia. BOOOOOO! (running at newegg to see if things have changed)
- LeviTheSmith, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1@ dacheetah. Go to MSY. Their site has been reported for virus/threat but they are the cheapest PC store I have ever seen. I have used them for many things. Be sure to ring up before going down because they are sometimes sold out on things. 640GB Samsung SATA for $85.

- mecharabbit, on 07/23/2008, -12/+1Great timing. My computer just caught a nasty virus, and the only way I'm able to access my programs is through the "Run" command. Good thing I was alive in the DOS era! But anyway, this is a good excuse to upgrade to some current hardware, and on the cheap!
- Evacide, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8Reformat?
- stk198323, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Maybe he still lives in the dos era, for him format means:
need to find driver, copy them to floppy disk, doesn't work so find new ones, copy them back to floppy, floppy get's dirty or corrupted, get a new floppy disk, then it works.
On to the next device!

- AhrenBa, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8Hmmm...this could add merit to the lower priced MacBooks that may be coming...that would be nice considering I need to buy a laptop for college very soon here.
- S201, on 07/23/2008, -1/+30The week after I buy a new processor... typical.
- jjb123, on 07/23/2008, -1/+10Me too :(
- Wicaeed, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0***** I bought an E8500 for 279.99 from Frys about 3 weeks ago. Wonder if I can return it and get 100 bucks back :(
- InsaneOni, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Do you guys pay no attention? It's been commonly known that Intel was going to cut prices sometime around now.
- Nephersir7, on 07/23/2008, -1/+15Just before heading to digg and seeing this article on top of the front page, I almost bought an Intel 8400 for 185 $. Now, the E8500 is selling for the same price!
Thanks digg, thanks intuition!- Cartman911, on 07/23/2008, -3/+0I sell PC equipment all day long for a distributor. 1000 units of Q6600's went for $183 each.
- transform100, on 07/23/2008, -12/+5I'll keep my AMD =)
- jonathandyer, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I don't know why they are digging you down, without AMD Intel wouldn't be where it is today (the opposite goes for AMD). I do think it's time for AMD to make a comeback and flip its market share again.
- mjoe, on 07/23/2008, -3/+17it's a waste to buy now with the Nehalem / Bloomfield quads coming out in october
- rockefeller2, on 07/23/2008, -2/+11October will be a bad time to buy with the new *Insert_Upcoming_CPU_Name_Here* coming in February 09'.
- scoottie, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3not really since that will only be a shrink for 32nm to 45nm

- scoottie, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3not really since that will only be a shrink for 32nm to 45nm
- m0deth, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5Trouble is, you'll be paying for those Nehalems, and dearly too, if you want them on a decent chipset that actually supports all the new goodies that make the whole platform really worth it from the performance standpoint.
A 4G stable on air chip now for 185 however will carry you until the next chipset/cpu change settles down and starts getting priced in the 'reality' bracket for us regular users. All those businesses that get boned for up front new purchases have yet to get whacked, pass that to us, rinse, repeat.
Jumping on first rev full hardware changes, is usually not for the feint of heart. It's costly bare minimum, and somehow, I doubt a nicely OC'd G0 Q6600 or above is going to be slow anytime soon.- Tenoq, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1Valid point - I'm still using my well OC'ed E6600 - because buying a new board and E8400 will probably only net me another 200-400Mhz. That's not going to be noticeable. :p
- rockefeller2, on 07/23/2008, -2/+11October will be a bad time to buy with the new *Insert_Upcoming_CPU_Name_Here* coming in February 09'.
- Awspire, on 07/23/2008, -1/+12If anyone recently ordered a CPU from a retailer like Newegg, and the CPU has dropped in price, try contacting them online to see if they'll refund the difference. Doesn't hurt to try.
- jellydoughnut21, on 07/23/2008, -1/+10my next cpu upgrade will be to quad core, but i haven't seen anything spectacular from the quad core area yet, seems kind of like we're in a transition stage from dual to quad, which is kind of wierd seeing as how dual core processors are still widely untapped.
- clharlem149, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3let's hope when important applications are made to fully take advantage of multiple cores, the word multiple can be substituted with any number. and, let's hope that by pushing the development of multi-core processors, the rapid development of apps that take advantage of them will be encouraged. let's hope.
- mal1964, on 07/23/2008, -3/+9Price cutting is happening everywhere and they have to, If they what sales, Because the economy says cut prices because not to many can afford the year 2004 prices like they could in 2004.

- spacebuddy, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Quad core is so uber.
- Abatrour, on 07/23/2008, -6/+1What I dont like about intel is how they change their socket so quickly. It forces everyone to buy a new motherboard.
Thats why I'm sticking with amd- eagleeyez, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4its been lg775 for awhile no?
- rg8670bx, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5You've got it the other way around, it's AMD that keeps changing sockets. They went from socket 754, 940, 939, AM2 and AM2+ all in the same architecture (Athlon 64). Intel on the other hand has been LGA775 since the P4 days.
- metaphzle, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1Good news, maybe I can upgrade my Core2Duo to a Core2Quad even sooner now.

- Philoushka, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1...but we've been wondering since 1998.
- rabidg00se, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1No mobile drops? (I don't know anything about processors, maybe some of those on the page are mobile--all I know is I'm looking at a T9300, and $319 from Newegg is too steep for me.)
- najibk, on 07/23/2008, -1/+0It's like Christmas for me when a manufacturer has price cuts.
- Trifold, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2And of course I just rebuilt my system with a Q6600 a couple of weeks ago. This must be how those $599 iphone buyers felt.
- SwitchXFactor, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I was really hoping for that Q9300 I've had my eyes on to drop. Really looking forward to putting a 45nm quad core 1333MHz bus chip in my desktop at home, but I'll be switching off the AMD platform so I need to get a MB as well... trying to hold out for price cuts and sales!
- Lazer32, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I built my system with a Q6600 last week, and right now there is a $5 difference from what I paid.
Also, be aware that the $184.99 Q6600 is OEM, and Newegg tell us these OEM chips DO NOT come with a manufacturer warranty, only the retail versions do!- Mathieugothax, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Good point, however, retailers offers 30 days return period, so if your OEM chip is DOA(which is the biggest source of returns/refunds), you'll be able to return it. In any case, cpus failures are very rare, unless you overclock(increase voltage) it, if your power supply is crap or if it's poorly cooled. If you overclock, you lose your warranty anyway.
- palewook, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1amd actually has been around since '69
- Isandunk, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Are these international price cuts? I won't be surprised if these don't materialise in the UK...
- Mathieugothax, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I believe so. The problem you have in UK/Europe are taxes...
- bmwracer0, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1No drop on the Q9450 either? That was one of the best bangs for the buck IMO. Now I'm not sure with that Q9400...
- coolingstar9, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Wow, this is really a good news for those who want to upgrade cpu. It is timely consider other products, like fuel. oil. food mostly all up. Good information for purchase-CPU.
Have a nice day. - LockDeltz, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0AMD will be back once they release their 45nm processors. It will be a boost for AMD and give Intel serious competition again, that's my prediction.
