Wireless device makers slip on iPhone news
marketwatch.com — SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Shares of wireless device makers slumped Tuesday as news of the iPhone from Apple Computer Inc. surfaced. Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the device at the Macworld trade show in San Francisco. Research in Motion saw its shares trading down 6.3% at $133.14 after the news, while rival smartphone maker Palm Inc. was

Ahh well, I'm not surprised, all the cell phone companies now have to compete with one of the most innovative companies of the last decade.- Atom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20You would think after 20hrs someone would have a little more intelligent response.
- Snokage, on 10/12/2007, -48/+25stop saying innovative.....because they arent...they didnt make anything new. they simply made something that does stuff we can already do (even all the junk it can do and more, all on one device). all they did was put apple logo on it...
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -13/+40Snokage: Taking existing stuff and making something new and interesting is a big part of innovation.
- Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50An apple logo is much nicer than the duck tape holding my blackberry, camera and ipod together as one though...
- simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -26/+17Hate to say it, but technically Snookage is in fact correct. There's not one thing -innovating- here. Just a really -cool- looking portable device that does things we've been able to for a long time anyway. Some -new- -technology- would be innovating. Like iQuantum Computer, that would be.
Get with reality. Where did all the mathematicians and programmers on digg go? This iPhone crap is killing the quality of life on this site.
Someone digg up some actually interesting articles, please.
Thank you. - thespace2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26200+ patents to create it and all the market competitors stock taking a nose dive and its still not innovative enough for you? What do you want, a built in teleporter?

I'd like to find at least one of the "there's nothing innovative here" crowd that has actually written mobile phone production code in something like System 60. - foobar5892, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Duct tape, it's duct tape! When will people stop misspelling it?! Use the goddamn spellchecker.
- MakinBacon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Sorry foobar - but there is in fact a "Duck Tape" brand duct tape...

So what part of my comment is not "intelligent" That Apple is one of the most innovative companies in the last decade? That I'm not surprised that stock prices of their phone competitors is dropping?
I'm sorry I guess It'd have been smarter to say "daaaaah apple rulzor baaaaaaaaaaaaaah" instead of actually make a coherent thought, knowing the digg community it probably would have been dug a lot more. - somerandomnerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The World Wide Web didn't do anything new- the technology had been around since the 1960s. What TBL did was put it together in a way that made it into something that anyone could use- not just computer nerds.
The Apple phone looks like it's going to do the same thing to the PDA market. Speaking as someone who has been using Windows Mobile since 2002, I think it's well overdue. Touchscreens are one thing. Touchscreens with a decent UI are something else altogether. - MrBlackthorne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0While you can look at each individual component in the iPhone and say, "that's not innovative," you also have to put it into context. For example, touch screen technology has been around for years, but you can't deny that other wireless companies would LOVE to get their hands on Apple's version. It's unlike anything around and a huge improvement over traditional implementations. The mail system is fantastic, and something I've been wishing for for years. Their use of sensors to know the orientation and the proximity of the device is rather inventive. It is pretty unbelievable that they managed to cram all that into a case about the size (or smaller) than a Zune and still achieve a respectable battery life and three forms of wireless communication. Innovation isn't necessarily inventing new technology. Innovation is creating something that hasn't been seen before. If this device already exists, please tell me where I can get it!
- MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2who cares the iPhone is the next PS3 @ a 500 price point.
You could buy a computer (macmini) or another cellphone crammed with ***** you don't need and will never use (iphone).
MrBlackthorne - its called a cheap cell phone and a GPS. I guess you haven't ever seen a blackberry before ROFL!!
Touchscreen technology is pointless and stupid. It seems great until your screen gets all slimmed from actually using it out in public. - MrBlackthorne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OK, BiProduct... Send me the link to the Blackberry that has all the features of the iPhone in a similar or smaller form factor, and I'll admit that the iPhone sucks. Interestingly, I did some research and was even considering buying a Blackberry or Windows smart phone. But they all had a ridiculous-looking form factor, awful interface, and poor design. If these things don't matter to you, enjoy your "cheap cell phone and GPS." If I'm gonna drop $400 - $500 on a "smartphone," I want something usable. I understand quality and usability don't matter to you, and that's your prerogative. They're the two things that have kept me from upgrading my 2.5 year old Moto V710 to any of the junk that is currently out there.
- Zique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@MrBlackthorne
So how about, say, Nokia N93? It does pretty much everything the iPhone does minus GPS (which is an add-on), although it also supports 3G. UI is by far the most innovative thing iPhone has, the fact is that feature-wise it doesn't have much new to offer. Don't get me wrong, if the UI works as Apple claims it does, it's one damn innovation, but it'll take 6 months to tell. - MrBlackthorne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, Kudos to Nokia for putting a 3.5 MP camera on their phone, but you can see what it does - it adds all that bulkiness to the swivel. I don't know, I've never held the N93, but even with a service agreement it costs almost as much as (in some cases more than) the iPhone, and the GPS add-on looks bulky. It has a lot of moving parts, too. I haven't really used the Nokia interface since the late 90's, so I can't speak on that. It looks like a nice phone, and I'd consider it.
What I can say is that the first thing that came to mind when I saw the iPhone demoed was, "Why don't other phone manufacturers make an interface like this?" Every complaint I have about my V710, all the phones I had before it, and every Blackberry/smartphone I've played with was answered in the demo.
I'll say this: The technology on the iPhone is above-average and priced competitively. The interface blows my mind.
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -18/+25i find it amazing how all the fanboys are suddenly financial wizards. before everyone gets all gidddy, wait 6 months and see what happens.
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21I agree with your plan to wait and see, even if I think your word chocie is a bit rude.
- thespace2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I don't think all those investors that pulled out their stocks are fanboys. I think they're really scared of the fact that Apple may suck up the market share like they did with the mp3 player market. I think that there is actually a major rumbling in the cell phone market and the stocks are reflecting that. Apple is a major force in the cellphone market now and I wouldn't be suprised if Microsoft doesn't start jumping on board here in a major way soon too. I wouldn't be suprised that zune goes through a very major overhaul in its second generation. Also expect alot of companies merging. This is definately serious. Fanboy or no fanboy.
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4thanks for proving my point, space-
"I think they're really scared of the fact that Apple may suck up the market share like they did with the mp3 player market" - no way in hell apple gets 80% of the cell phone market with this. at best, they capture a piece of the american high end personal cell phone market. also, the mp3 market was underdeveloped and in it's infancy, everyone already has a cell phone and there are serious global players to contend with.
"Apple is a major force in the cellphone market now"- really? with one unreleased product and no sales? and the only _major_ differentiator being the ability to view the web as it should be, which everyone will have soon enough? what flavor is the kool-aid today?
and your microsoft and zune comment are way off base. outside of the fanboys, nobody gives a ***** about apple vs ms. besides, the global 2000 runs on microsoft, so their execs will continue to use crackberries.
"Also expect alot of companies merging" - well, if you said so.
the iphone is a very cool shiny toy with pretty buttons. that's it. relax. - Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@thespace2
Apple has sold zero iPhones. How are they are major force? Even if they sold 10 Million iPhones in 2007 they will have 1% of the market. No way they sell 10 Million units at $500-$600. - thespace2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@canewediggit - Sorry man, I still stick to my guns on this one. 6 months or not, the landscape just changed. And I hope MS jumps on the bandwagon too. The OS companies need to have mobile units so you can take your data with you. And I entirely agree that software companies need to be heavily involved with their hardware designs. These cellphones out today suck seriously (like really seriously). And I'm not entirely impressed with the iphone, buts its the best thing I've seen yet.
- MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1thespace2 your a total Apple Tool. You kow this right?
- MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The OS companies need to have mobile units so you can take your data with you."
- Flash Drive: $25
And I entirely agree that software companies need to be heavily involved with their hardware designs.
- lol no they shouldn't
These cellphones out today suck seriously (like really seriously). And I'm not entirely impressed with the iphone, buts its the best thing I've seen yet.
- And what have you seen? Photos and some ***** on stage talking about it. Other than that its all liquid.
Your just an apple fan spouting off like the rest. "They can do no wrong" type crap. - MrBlackthorne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think you guys are missing the point. The fact that wireless stocks slipped on a device that isn't even going to be released until June makes Apple a major player, like it or not. Time will tell how successful Apple is in the market. But think about this: How many of the wireless device companies laughed off their new competition, yesterday? I'd bet the answer is NONE OF THEM. You know the Motorolas and Nokias are taking this very seriously, and that's enough to call Apple a "major player."
- Predathar, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19A high end Blackberry or a iphone for almost the same price, most people will go for the iphone, this WILL hurt RIM.
- Snokage, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7who says? cingular...screw that. and besides iPhone isnt even out yet. how you can make a statement like that is rediculous.
- MikeDawg, on 10/12/2007, -19/+11You're making one huge blunder in your calculations there slick. Not everybody is an Apple fanboy like yourself.
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Except corporations that require MS Exchange support.
- AutoShovel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If you are a tech head, you will probably hold back your purchase on a mobile-PDA until the iPhone comes out. If you are in business here and now, you will probably go with RIM/Treo or even the Nokia as all run the Blackberry application and that is what your business already has on its servers? If Apple are sensible, they will try to get the Blackberry app on the iPhone.
The other point is the keyboard. If you are heavily using messaging then maybe the mini-keyboards are better than the touchpad. My believe is that they are because of the better tactile feedback. A blackberry use spends a lot of time messaging so that functionality needs to be addressed. - deanlowe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Palm and Microsoft have PDAs that have touch screens and there's a reason they put a mini keyboard on those 'smart phones'. Anyone who wants a touch screen keyboard has probably never used one to type lots of text.
- rblinne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The business market most likely won't be affected because as was stated previously the lack of Exchange support and to a lesser extent lack of 3G support. The companies that should be worried are the wireless carriers because the consumer will expect non-crippled phones. If Steve gives into Cingulair and does not allow third-party software on these phones then the iPhone may very well tank. If third-party software is allowed then the first company to include Exchange server support will make a lot of money.
- smeagel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@Snokage, not as ridiculous as reaching adulthood and never learning how to spell ridiculous.
And onto the point you actually try to make, you can forecast markets before a product comes out, it's not exactly a rare or ridiculous thing. - doctordrew89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why? Why would people go for the iPhone? Blackberry's and the iPhone aren't the same price and what if I'm with Sprint, or Verizon, or Tmobile, or anyone other than Cingular, I'm going to break my contract or at the very least when my contract ends sign one with Cingular just because I want to spend 600 bucks on a phone? Are these smartphone user's the people that just can't live without their iPod. Most people I know with smartphones are corporate types and I can't see them convincing their companies to purchase an iPhone over a lesser priced blackberry or even caring too. The iPhone is cool, no doubt, but it's more than just popping into an Apple store and picking up an iPod for a couple hundred bucks. It's buying the phone signing a contract with a cell phone company (that chances are may not be the one you are with) and then paying every month for use of the phone...
- Just1nD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@doctordrew89
"It's buying the phone signing a contract with a cell phone company (that chances are may not be the one you are with) and then paying every month for use of the phone..."
***** i pay every month too for the phone i wanted, i must be getting ripped off. just keep with your sex talk show
have you seen anything like the iPhone (this will be the new ipod i'm sure)? Did you ever see anything like an iPod (someone on another digg mention this..) their costs are/were obviously high upon their introduction. can you tell me other blackberry manufacturers won't be lookin at the iPhone inside and out trying to mimic their functionality sayin ***** we need to catch up? i don't know about you but that thing is ***** cool as hell. i'll wait on upgrading my Verizon phone/contract for another 2 year to get this phone. hell by then there will probably be software upgrades for different programs to run. presentations, etc not to mention greater storage. wait till you have the thing in your hand before saying you don't want it.
but me - MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Justin, shouldn't you be in Gym class or on recess right now?
- sigmaman2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No Exchange support? Well, okay, yeah. Not natively. But it supports IMAP, and Exchange is a "embraced and extended" version of IMAP.
- Just1nD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just had naptime but thanks MeatBiProduct
- ij00mini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's Apple, Inc. now. How long do you think before the news companies catch on? CNBC switched it halfway through an interview with Steve Jobs.
- ImJasonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Haven't there been about three of these "Blackberry and Palm stock takes a nosedive" stories so far?
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3expect more.
I'll get one just for the on screen voicemail. I've been waiting years for someone to fix crappy voicemail and it looks like apple may have. - MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2lol how did they fix voicemail if your going to be using Cingulars service? You'll have cingular voicemail noob.
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3expect more.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i wonder if it was a coincidence? i would think a ton of Blackberries are given out by corporations to a ton of people. i don't see Apple making a dent in that, at least not really soon. Apple's goal is 1% of the phone market. they are not even thinking of anything like the iPod's market share. the fact that only Cingular will have it in the USA for at least a few years (according to the keynote) would probably mean a lot to corporations even pondering it. if they are already hooked up with Verizon or Sprint, then it's just not an option anyway.
i still think the iPhone will be selling enough to individuals. i know a lot of people that pay for their smartphones out of pocket, and are Mac users. the other smartphones are hit or miss with OS X sync, so if this one is simple then it's a huge selling point right there. it's like the iPod. if it works really well with a Mac when nothing else does.... a lot of people will ump on it. if it's a good product, then everyone in that market will look at one. - halik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Most people do short time arbitrage after news like that, but the prices won't be affacted for more than a couple of days. This kinda stuff doesn't really make it into the analyst models, so the mid and long term price targets are largely unaffected...
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Arbitrage: "the practice of taking advantage of a price differential between two or more *markets*" (my emphasis)
I don't think you meant arbitrage.. Nice attempt to sound clever though.. - jakebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I love me some big words.
- questionable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well, the people buying the stocks at the lower price right now are attempting to arbitrage. So, yes. I understand what he's trying to get at, but it's the wrong context.
- halik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Arbitrage by defintiion is taking advantage of market ineffeciencies (imperfect information etc. ) for profit. Whether it's between two market or within one is irrelevant.
From M-W: "2 : the purchase of the stock of a takeover target especially with a view to selling it profitably to the raider"
I'm glad you spent you focus on one word, as opposed to arguing the idea....
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Arbitrage: "the practice of taking advantage of a price differential between two or more *markets*" (my emphasis)
- MKinMotion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So buy your Nokia and Motorola stock at a low during this little fit. They'll recover quicker than AAPL will release their phone.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7The only things new about this phone is that it run OSx ,have a touch screen and have a 4gb-8gb HDD for the ipod side of it NO 3G NO GPS 500-600$ 2 year contract sorry I thought i'll never say this but that PS3 on bestbuy's shelves is really looking good right now
now go ahead and bury me for telling the truth- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4but for 600 bucks, a ps3 still cant play games. what are you gonna do, stuff it with toast and cook breakfast?
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4but a iphone still will need a hard case and a bluetooth ear piece unless you like stracthes
- Shocky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"but for 600 bucks, a ps3 still cant play games. what are you gonna do, stuff it with toast and cook breakfast?"
But for 600 bucks your iphone can't make calls. You still need to pay your cell bill.
- clubmasta2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Stocks go up and down? You gotta be kidding me
- sigmaman2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, stocks go up and down. But only certain stocks went up, and other certain stocks went downn ad the timing was correlated with the iPhone introduction.
Stocks go up an down...but not without a good reason.
- sigmaman2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, stocks go up and down. But only certain stocks went up, and other certain stocks went downn ad the timing was correlated with the iPhone introduction.
- dyrmsz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3buried wrong topic, post iphone spam in apple please, you know, the topic I had to turn off after the announcement of the iGimmick oops I mean iPhone
- e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Shares of wireless device makers slumped Tuesday as news of the iPhone from Apple Computer Inc. surfaced."
Don't you mean "Apple, Inc." ? - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Seriously, what's the big ***** deal. The iPhone isn't much of a threat when it won't be available for another 6 months.
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The iPhone does have Bluetooth 2.0, so wireless keyboards should be able to work for those times you need to type a lot.
This also goes for GPS, since there are lots of Bluetooth GPS units out there.
Of course it remains to be seen if the iPhone will be compatible with these accessories.
I wonder if all widgets work? If I can develop my own widget {so easy} for my own phone and have it sit on the home screen... I would be sold. OK, I'm already sold... If there's an unlocked version coming. Buying locked handsets is wrong.
The price is not $600, it's $600 + 2 years of monthly payments. That's ~ $1600. I can get a macbook for less....although that's not really apples to apples. :P- MikeUnwired, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's $600 (or $499 if you read the stories) period. You have to pay the 2-years of service for any phone, and thus, it is not a price factor in the hardware.
- questionable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am not carrying a wireless keyboard in my pocket to type a message. I know they have those flexible roll up ones now, but isn't going to be happy times unrolling that out every single time. Tactile feel is important. Have you ever played with the LG Chocolate for Verizon. I can't deal with not feeling something give when I touch it. It doesn't assure me that I've pressed a button.
The widgets will be nice, but I'm sure if the screen real-estate will be big enough to fit everything, but it could be always displaying the widgets until you move it and then it shifts into the normal cellphone screen. If it tried to fit it all on there, for a lack of better words, it'd be a "hot mess."
- MikeUnwired, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The great thing about the iPhone is that it sets a standard and validates a feature set for the other manufacturers to work from -- full OS, touch screen and huge on-board storage capacity . Like the iPod, the iPhone will impose a benchmark on the rest of the marketplace. Now Palm, Nokia, Motorola and RIM can define their responses AND we will be the benefactors. Frankly, I think this offering is more a clear shot at Microsoft and their Windows Mobile system than anything else. Bill and Steve are digging-in to wage a mighty juicy war...
- gigaquack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there is a reason all smartphones have physical keyboards. they are simply superior. apple has a bad habit of putting aesthetics over functionality. that's why they're not going to make huge inroads in the business world with the iphone. i guess their target audience is mac fanatics with money to burn. seems awfully limiting to me.
- southport, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5I wouldn't have that bloated piece of ***** if you gave me one, FREE. Steve Jobs is a self-congratulatory tripe, also.
- MikeUnwired, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Crook or not, the iPhone sets a new bar -- especially in operating system and built-in storage capacity.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
- soulonice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man, I would totally take one if given to me for free.
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The iPhone is the best looking phone I have seen, but pretty is not enough for me. I can get a phone today that does everything the iPhone does and for half the price.
- MakinBacon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Can we please test your theory?
Put up a link to another single phone that has the following features (heck try and find all these features on two separate phones):
1. A 3.5" "multi-touch" display that allows you to zoom in and out by "pinching".
2. Widescreen 320x480 with 160 pixels per inch (most are 320x240 and have 110ppi).
3. Live updating widgets that let you check stocks or weather or... oh I don't know... play Sudoku.
4. Can access your iTunes music library to play music, TV shows or movies.
5. Features an accelorometer that automatically flips the display when your phone is moved from portrait to landscape.
6. A full-featured web browser that let's you smart-zoom to specific areas with a double-tap.
7. Has Blackberry-like "push" technology for emails.
8. SMS messages with individuals are contained in a chat-like inline interface.
9. "Visual voicemail" which lets you choose messages you want to listen to in your order of importance (or not at all).
10. Google maps interface created specifically for the phone with smart-dial options built in.
11. 2 Megapixel camera and iPhoto-like software to manage your photo libraries.
12. Proximity detector that dims and shuts off the touch-screen when it comes near your ear.
13. Is 0.4" thick.
14. OS X operating system which means a world of other possibilities (Msft Office, iWork, heck maybe even Delicious Library).
Now watch as he responds with: "I don't need a phone with all those features anyways"... well I do. - knupso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's funny when the Zune added features to the mobile mp3 player, the apple fanboys where saying I don't need those features anyway.
Really 8GB for a 600 video iPod with a phone built in, no thanks.
I will wait for a 80+ GB true video iPod.
I like my phone and mp3/video player separate. They just don't put enough storage in these combined products.
If apple really wanted to innovate that would have put a sizable hard drive in the iPhone. - morningchai, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0It's not about WHAT it does. It's about HOW it does it.
It's fluid, simple and intuitive. That's the difference.
- MakinBacon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Can we please test your theory?
- hadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i read that as someone wsa releasing details about the iphone that we didn't know about. boo!
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No one said the stock market was in any way rational :p
That said, I just dumped all my Apple shares this morning at 97. And yeah, at the time, buying them at 58 seemed totally irrational :p - alcoholanon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want a black and white display simple phone with excellent reception/transmission and awesome battery life.
When this happens they will finally be doing something. Battery life hasn't kept up with the technology.- morningchai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha.. that's sounds a lot like my ghetto Nokia phone that I've had for the last three years (although it has a pretty clunky color screen). That's what has saved it from being upgraded to something slick and pretty.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Time to buy. A $500 phone that offers little more than current offerings is a likely flop. With iPod Apple was filling in a need. I don't think anyone needs this phone that much more than a Blackberry, especially given the price.
- mr_wej, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would pay $500-$600 for this phone tomorrow, and I have paid that much in the past for different versions of Treo. There are plenty of people like me that have been using a treo/blackberry/pda for years and have wanted a better more powerful version. That is exactly what the iPhone is. A more powerful, more convenient, and more innovative option. Just the one voicemail feature is extremely innovative and will save people like me A LOT of time and headache and guess what, there is not a phone that exists in North America that does it. Things like the OSX, ipod, wifi, and 2 megapixel camera are definitely bonuses. So everyone crying about the price or claiming this phone isn't new in any way you are simply wrong, you are also outside of the target market and therefore meaningless to the discussion. Some of you need to be reminded that you can buy an MP3 player for as low as $20, but that hasn't stopped Apple from selling 90+ million ipods at more than TEN TIMES that amount! This phone is only at a slight premium to current PDA phones on the market today, expect it to sell VERY well.
