- StandardsDT, on 07/03/2008, -4/+15Great article. I try to do at least 15 minutes a day with the working out along with drinking water, and I'm now working on eating healthier. My 15 minutes a day mainly consist of DDR, but I'm also going to work in some other things as well.
- darkcooger, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2It's a decent article, but it makes some bad suggestions. To me, the worst was planned snacks. I can see carefully planning your snacks if you're trying to discipline yourself, but the reality is that your body signals when it needs food and you should always answer it. Since your body doesn't work on a rigidly defined schedule, your snacks shouldn't be confined to one, either. Ignoring hunger triggers a drop in metabolism, and that doesn't do you any good if you're trying to lose weight.
- Markpdotcom, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1"...but I'm also going to work in some other things as well."

- SheVibe, on 07/03/2008, -1/+18Great article for a calorie restricted diet. I'm more into the low carb, high protein route. It was the only thing that ever worked for me. In general the drinking water instead of soda etc is great advice, and of course some cardio!
- LeCollectif, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6This seems to be the most passive way to lose weight. Something that they're missing is that you can lose all the weight in the world and still look like a skinny fat guy. Throw in some weights and high protein meats to not only lose weight, but develop a body.
- GreatDrok, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1Technically, a low carb, high protein diet ends up being a low calorie diet too. I did Atkins for a while and lost a significant amount of weight but it was largely down to the fact that I couldn't face eating that much meat so when I worked out my calorific intake I had actually cut down a lot. In the end, the most successful diet I had was exactly this one but with the added feature that you need to work out how many calories you need to eat to maintain your current weight and then drop 500 a day and you lose 1lb per week. You need to recalibrate as the weight comes off because you will quickly reach a point where your weight loss decreases unless you reduce your intake again. I tried to do about 30 mins walking a day too and that helped but definitely don't allow yourself more calories because you have done some exercise. The idea is to use your stored energy and exercise will encourage your body to do it. In the end I lost 45lbs over a period of 9 months. I wasn't hyper aggressive in my weight loss and ate quite well including lots of the stuff people say you shouldn't (fish and chips) but the trick is even if you eat some bad stuff, just add the calories on to your total for the day and keep track of it all. The reason most people fail is that they really don't know how much they take in. You must note everything. Not hard, simple scientific fact. Fad diets are nothing more than a means of fooling people into controlling their calorific intake.
- q00u, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Low carb, high protein *IS* calorie restricted, but in a way you probably don't notice.
Carbs digest faster than protein. Protein keeps you feeling full longer. You end up eating less. Voila, calorie restriction without hunger pains. This is the real reason the Atkins-like diets work.
(Also, weight training burns more calories in the long run than cardio, but a mix of both is best)
- 4eloBek, on 07/03/2008, -2/+9I think i have seen this before. Always do that, and that, yeah advice is great, but who used it and if it worked, how long it took to see some changes?
- orlyfactor, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8I lost 20 lbs by walking for about 30-45 minutes a day, about 5 days a week. Also eating oatmeal and fruit every morning, and slowly weaning myself off of sugary drinks (it takes a while, but I love the taste of unsweetened tea now). Now I'm at the gym 4-6 times a week, doing an hour of cardio in addition to strength training. I did not start out fat, per se, I was 165 and about 5'10" - now I'm down to 140-145. The biggest hurdle is getting yourself to do it every day, but if you stick with it for about a month and start seeing results, that's probably your biggest motivator right there. If you can't find motivation to do it, then you just have to force yourself. You are the master of your own domain, and you can change yourself if you really want to. But you have to work at it.

Treats occasionally also help a lot. : ) - ph1sh55, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8you can actually eat healthier AND more and still lose weight if you're working out. 6 smaller meals a day is better for your metabolism and energy levels than 3 big ones. The hard part is the discipline to do those things. When the body understands it has a constant supply of food it is more apt to burn and put it into muscle development than store it as fat. Working out is hard if you have no energy!
- Jabertsohn, on 07/03/2008, -4/+7Eat healthier, not less.

- zyl0x, on 07/03/2008, -6/+21Why is it that all these "lose weight" guides have a "sex" step? I get that sex burns calories. Yeah, great, wonderful. But all it does is alienate those people who aren't getting sex. Chances are they're also the same people who are out of shape and reading your article. Try to keep it positive without rubbing their sexless lives in their faces.
- Jabertsohn, on 07/03/2008, -1/+28You can always jog and masturbate at the same time...

- sens, on 07/03/2008, -7/+1Hey everyone! Gather 'round and let's all laugh and point at the virgin!
- Jabertsohn, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha. Sens the virgin.
- ehalasey, on 07/03/2008, -10/+4Bitter much?
Sex isn't just great for you because it burns calories. It also stimulates your metabolism and releases all kinds of happy chemicals into your bloodstream that keep you from doing things like, oh, stuffing food into your face out of sheer depression.
So, instead of whining about being "alienated" [hi, isn't that what you're seeking by browing around on the internet instead of talking to a real person?], maybe you should just get over yourself. The rest of the internets doesn't care about little ol' you being all butthurt about the fact that you're not presently getting something that all humans experience at some point in their lives. The health benefits outweigh your self-centeredness.
- Jabertsohn, on 07/03/2008, -1/+28You can always jog and masturbate at the same time...
- Borgcube636, on 07/03/2008, -3/+4Nutrition is of the utmost importance in health and losing weight. Eat nutritious, fresh, unprocessed foods, and take out the junk food, drugs, smoking, alcohol, etc. Clearing toxins from the body is the goal, so that the nutrition can get in.
- EvanHamilton, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2I've heard all this before, but it's nice to see it all in one place.
- Prayformojo777, on 07/03/2008, -1/+38So to lose weight, one should drink water instead of soda, replace fatty foods with healthy ones, and exercise? You don't say! Thankfully this article is here to illuminate these obscure diet secrets!
- alpha94, on 07/03/2008, -0/+7Yah, eating healthy is a very obscure idea for many people. I know a lot of people that claim to eat healthy but in fact eat a lot of junk and never exercise but claim they've tried everything.
- megamod, on 07/03/2008, -2/+1The cupcake is a lie!
- digiguy, on 07/03/2008, -3/+1Exercise burns calories. Eat good foods. Not eating just causes bad health
- cJw314, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1...and your body burns muscle and stores fat - which is exactly what you DON'T want... or you do?

- Wartyboskfapped, on 07/03/2008, -8/+2***** all that, I use the Shangri-La Diet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shangri-La_Diet and have lost 44 lbs in 3 months without lifting a finger (ok, I walk about a mile a day). No hunger, no avoiding certain foods.
- Nintendesert, on 07/03/2008, -2/+7Yeah... that sounds like a big crock of *****.
- Seaseme, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3"The second rule of weight loss is that if you take in 3,500 fewer calories than you burn, you'll (generally) lose a pound of fat. So if you can have a calorie deficit of 500 calories a day, you'll burn a pound of fat a week (7 times 500 is 3,500), which is about 50 pounds a year."
Can someone explain what this means? I've read it over and over and it still doesn't make sense to me- nyx210, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Normally you need a certain amount of Calories per day to maintain your weight. If you eat less than that amount, you'll have a deficit of Calories, and you'll lose weight. If you eat over that amount, then you'll gain weight.
Doing exercise will increase the amount of Calories per day to maintain weight. So if you manage a 500 Calorie deficit per day, that equals 3,500 Calories per week.- Seaseme, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2So, where do I figure out how many calories I need a day to maintain?
- Gonthim, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3Depends on how active you are and what you weigh. I'd say start with the daily recommended, 2000, and work from that. Keep track of what you eat and estimate your daily intake, and get it to 2000, and then start finding ways to cut it lower without harming your health.
The other option is to cut it really low at the beginning, go for 1500 or less and start exercising. Once you start losing weight you can add things back into your diet until you're satisfied with the rate of weight loss, or you stop losing weight, if you're just after maintaining where you are.
Personally I eat pretty much the same thing week to week, which makes it easier to figure out whether you need to cut back or can add things in. - nyx210, on 07/03/2008, -1/+21. Try to find an activity calculator online such as www.caloriesperhour.com and calculate how many calories you burn on an average day.
2. Try to find a BMR calculator online.
3. Ask your doctor.
A semi-active 150 lb person typically needs about 2,000 Calories per day.
- NDGeist, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Basically, you need to figure out how many calories you burn in a day, and eat 500 less than that... A deficite of 500 calories per day will net a 1 pound per week average. If you want to lose 2 pounds per week, you should have a 1000 calorie per day average deficit. Additionally, this deficit shouldn't come 100% from starving yourself, you should probably exercise 200 calories, and eat 300 calories less (or 400/600 under the 1k goal)
I just finished 3 months of a 1200 calorie deficit, and lost around 2.1 pounds per week over that 14 weeks.
-Chip - curseoflou, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4if you consume 500 fewer calories a day than you normal eat/drink you lose one pound a week.
- BoneStamp, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2A pound of fat has 3500 calories of energy in it. Every 3500 calories you reduce your diet by, you will burn a pound of fat (the 3500 calories has to come from somewhere). You shouldn't reduce your diet by 3500 calories in a day, so if you reduce it by 3500 over 7 days then that's 500 a day. 500 * 7 = 3500 calories a week. 3500 calories = 1 pound of fat so you lose 1 pound of fat a week.
- darkcooger, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Echoing what everyone else said, a pound of fat is roughly 3,500 calories. However, bear in mind that not *all* of your calorie deficit is burned in fat. Depending on other factors, such as activity level and what things in particular you're eating, you will also burn some amount of muscle. This is why it's important that you be sure your muscles are stressed (rather than just worked) during your workout - because stressing your muscles encourages muscle regrowth, so you regain any muscle lost due to the calorie deficit, but the fat stays gone.
- nyx210, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Normally you need a certain amount of Calories per day to maintain your weight. If you eat less than that amount, you'll have a deficit of Calories, and you'll lose weight. If you eat over that amount, then you'll gain weight.

The way to lose weight is no secret. Having discipline to do what you know you need to to is the real probem. So, don't teach weight loss, teach discipline. - BingoPower, on 07/03/2008, -13/+2Jesus ***** Christ.

- gardnmi, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6Ground Turkey Breast is a great substitute for Ground Beef. Its 1g of fat per pound and less then 400 Calories per pound. You can make burgers, hamburger helper, tacos, sloppy joes....dropped from 205 to 183 eating the stuff.
- CedEx, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3But ground turkey doesn't taste as good as the heart clogging, fat gaining beef burgers.
Though, another substitute I hear is pretty good is bison meat.

- levelwave, on 07/03/2008, -4/+12"Go with red pasta sauce, not white. Marinara sauce instead of Alfredo will save you a couple hundred calories. Skip the meat too."
This is not a "great article" by any stretch of the imagination but someone's misguided opinion... skip the meat? wtf, so just dine on all carbs then? Adding chicken to a pasta dish can only HELP... it's going to slow the break down of the carbs into simple sugars and give you a more sustained release of insulin therefore slowing the conversion of those unused carbs to fat.- ScottMitchell, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6Good point. Without eating meat you'll start to look like all those obese vegetarians.
- pinkcherry, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Hey I used to know an obese vegetarian. The only thing she really enjoyed eating was bread, and she hated most vegetables.
- bubba9999, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4I knew one too. His fat ass munched on potato chips and cheese dip all day while he smugly exuded some delusional sense of self-moral superiority. The funny thing is that he thought he would lose weight like the other vegetarians he knew.
I don't see too many vegans who keep the weight on though.
- organic, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3Yea, the parts about replacing fats with carbs is equally misguided.

- s4g4n, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2"Have sex daily" Digg community is doomed with obesity now.
- tkr2099, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2I disagree with the part about replacing nuts with pretzels. There is plenty of evidence proving how food nuts can be for you, and peanuts act as a natural appetite suppressant. As long as you don't eat a ridiculous amount of them, keep eating the nuts.
- ScoobyG, on 07/03/2008, -0/+18All right, most of these make sense, but a couple are just plain stupid; skipping the nuts for the pretzels is one. Nuts are GOOD for you, full of vitamin, protein, and good fats. Pretzels are just empty carbs.
- LeCollectif, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Not to mention super high in sodium, which, in the short term causes you to retain water and gain weight. And, long term - causes heart problems.
- darkcooger, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1So get them unsalted. Yay!
- Behrad, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0Isn't any 'Raw' nut there? well sorry i'm from somewhere full of different kinds of nuts.

Always amused at the the people in our building that spend an incredible amount of money to work out at a fancy gym but take the elevator from the 1st floor to the 2nd. - MattB123, on 07/03/2008, -3/+2Wow! In just three years I could weigh 0 Lbs!
- OzzieAlThor, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Quit drinking so much pop and don't eat much, if anything, after 7 PM.
That'll drop you some (I've droped 15 lbs in 4 months just doing that).
If I got off my ass and took a walk it'd be 20 pounds. - tribble222, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2The trick to losing weight is correctly estimating your metabolism and timing your nutrients properly. Get a Polar F11 HRM and have it measure your VO2max (it is critical to get an accurate number). Do the submaximal step test to make sure you've got your VO2max right. Determine your maximum heart rate by experiment (not the formula). Wear the heart monitor all day for a normal day and check out how many calories you burned.
Make sure you eat evenly throughout the day and eat healthy foods. If you eat a caloric deficit of mcdonalds in one meal a day you will NOT lose weight. It's not as simple as calories in, calories out. - trollick, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8Sex? To burn 150 calories? Really? Why not also include swallowing after a BJ as a good source of protein?
- The_Red_Monkey, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Because semen is not protein its mostly glucose.
- edwartica, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2Hmmm, having sex daily is a great way to loose weight. I think I just found my new pick up line.
- BoneStamp, on 07/03/2008, -1/+5You probably don't need this line to pickup fat chicks.
- SteelFrog, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4"Hey baby, how 'bout you n' me go lose 150 calories?"
- BoneStamp, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9Skip the peanuts and go for pretzels? Empty carbs instead of protein and mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (good fats)? At least the nuts have something your body can actually use... the pretzels just metabolize as sugar (the pretzel sodium is useful, but you probably get enough elsewhere). If you're an athlete the pretzels might be ok for temporary energy boost but if you're trying to lose weight, have some peanuts for the good fats and then drink more water.

- xtinamo, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I would suggest getting a job that will promote a healthy lifestyle. I gave up higher pay to work at a gym and my body has thanked me ever since. Of course not everyone has the opportunity or want to go this extreme, but definitely consider your health when job searching. Working at a restaurant may be decent money, but you will easily
gain 15-20 lbs.- underdog138, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I entirely disagree with your last statement. I sit behind a desk all day and am 5'8" and weigh 160 pounds. I eat salads for lunch to try and compensate for my sedentary work habits. In between this job and my last one (approximately seven months), I went back to work at the Italian restaurant I was working at during college. I ate like ***** every day (four whole bucks for a big entree, after employee discount), but because I was on my feet walking all the time, I lost about fifteen pounds during those seven months. I've gained it all back since then.
- xtinamo, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Maybe you have a faster metabolism. I also worked at an italian restaurant as a maitre'd which came with a free meal every shift and gained about 15 lbs because of it. I have since lost that weight, but I noticed the same thing happening with my co-workers, though they too were female.
- underdog138, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I'll buy that. Exercise makes more of a difference in my weight fluctuation than my diet does. I failed to take that into account. I apologize.

- Jsmuli2, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1South Beach Diet is how I lost 15 pounds in 1.5 weeks, then another 10(ish) after having a normal diet.
It's tough at first but it works. - d3vn3t, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4My only question is what's up with the hairy guy in the photo? It's not like it's showing a before and after, it's just kinda like ... "Look at my hairy bod from the front ... now the side." :P

Might?- madrid, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4*Unwilling partners result in higher calorie-burn rates.
- Paulish, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1It is only a suggestion. Don't you know, sex is a right now, just like everything else. Politicians have passed a law that mandates sex for able bodied every man and woman in the name of health. I wonder who is getting the shaft on that one...
